Home improvement gifts for a first time homeowner?
A Skil circular saw is an industry standard for hand-held saws. It's a little pricey compared to others, but still is the number 1 reviewed saw as of last year. This is for the corded version and has been manufactured for years. It's about as perfect as a circular saw that can be and will be passed down to your grandkids. Whatever battery powered tools you choose, stick with 1 brand so batteries can be used in any tool. There's 3 tiers of tools, low, homeowner level, and professional grade. In my 20s, DeWalt was pro level only. Same with Bosch. Both are still very good tools and fit within the homeowner level. There's no real reason for a homeowner to spend double the cost for professional grade unless their paycheck requires it. I find that looking at several online reviews helps a lot in determining what is a good value. I also look at personal reviews to check the validity of online reviews.

I’ve always been a Makita guy without knowing anything about the corporate side. My tools always just felt more solid and durable than coworkers’ Dewalt or Milwaukee. Then I saw this in r/construction.
I have a Skil 12-volt drill I bought in 2005 that still works fine on the original batteries. My Dewalt does last longer on a battery, but the Skil puts along just fine.

Which tool brand ecosystem would you invest in for 2025 and why for the occasionally frugal DIYer?
I feel Skil 20v line is criminally under rated right now. Their brushless, compact impact driver and drill kit can be had for less than $100 Their 1/2" mid torque impact can be had for \~$80. All their batteries have built in usb charging.

I would go for Ryobi, Craftsman, or Kobalt if you just want one system. All of them have wide variety and they go on sale all the time. If you want some compact tools, Skil 12V are very good and really cheap

I have many but I've grown to like my SKIL 12v tools that have usb-c charging built into the battery so you can use any usb-c charger you already have. I leave my good Makita tools at home and do handyman duties with the cheap SKIL tools. Plus I can charge them with my phone charger in the car or use them as emergency power banks.

BIFL & new hobbies?
If I'm not already sure that I have a lot of uses for the thing, I usually get the cheapest version that is generally well-liked and isn't missing commonly used features. It doesn't need to be a particularly prestigious brand. The examples I'm thinking of right now are things like Yamaha student instruments or the Skil 10" table saw I'm looking at. There are cheaper options, but they'll have more problems and may not do everything you need them to. There are good used options that may be more interesting or capable, but you're buying an unknown product, and run the risk of sinking money into something damaged or otherwise not usable with no way to get your money back
