  Smartwool might have something for you, I have a 88% merino wool and 12% nylon tee in XL that’s a bit slim but great for wearing under heavy sweaters. I’ve had the tee for a couple years now and it’s still holding up great.

  Boots for NYC puddle jumping

  You’re probably going to want something taller. Although they tend to be a bit heavier, the height is needed when in the depths of winter or depths of NYC puddles - Sorell Joan Of Arctic - Wellies: Hunter, Bogs, LL Bean *Notes* - ^ Hunter sells a liner sock for warmth - LL 🫘 has something like Yaktrax specifically designed for the bean boot. These work great on ice, but not on cement. - Sorel tends to run small for me - I’d suggest sizing up a whole size for boots. Your toes and feet need room so they don’t get cold. - Also be sure to wear a wool or merino wool sock. I’m a fan of Bombas. I heard Darn Tough is good too. I like smartwool, but they tend to wear out. Thankfully, you can send back for replacement. - Additionally, you can add a sock liner (REI & I’m sure other brands have them). Much like a glove liner, they are thinner but add a lot more warmth. - Lastly, consider wearing different pants (fleece lined sweats or leggings, snow pants) when commuting & changing once at work or your destination

  Smartwool makes an all-season merino base layer as well. I won't say they are BIFL but they are very thin and skin tight, stretchy and they do not get the funk. They are buy it for a couple hundred wears though, especially if you can mend ittu bitty holes. Because it's all-season, it's very thin merino. But it's also really comfortable

  I have a set of Smartwool long johns from 2010, that was when I started biking a lot. I wash them with the rest of the laundry and hang them to dry. I find the long sleeve tops to be pretty warm though, I'm not sure I'd wear them under a sweater indoors.

  I’ve had my same old Smartwool base layers now going on a decade. No complaints. For OP’s purposes of wearing something very, very thin under a sweater, I think silk would be better as wool base layers do add a little bulk.

  What BIFL mistakes have you made?

  I absolutely love my Darn Toughs, have several pairs that I’ve been rocking for years, but with that being said, I only go for specific socks from them. The boot length hiker cushion and full cushion. I am not a fan of their technical socks. In fact I have thrown a few in the garbage before I figured out that I needed to just stick to the socks I already had and knew. Their ski socks are legit painful to wear, and their technical lightweight hikers and cycling socks are about the same. Anything sports related I do Smartwool or Ice Breaker. Ice Breaker ski socks are phenomenal.

  A few brands I'll probably stick with for life

  Madewell for jeans. Ruffwear for dog stuff. Seconding Patagonia. Darn Tough and Smartwool. Dyson (I’ve dropped one of their fans and my dog ate the remote and they still function perfectly despite looking rough). And an honorable mention to Ruggable: their customer service is exceptional.

  Skea down coat and a Steinbeck of Austria wool coat plus oodles of Smart wool and Elgin blankets BUT that was before it was sold to the company that runs TJ Max. It's a pale shadow of what it was and I don't bother shopping there now.

  You can scoop Cabot and sons (same ppl as darn tough) socks at TJ Maxx/Marshalls/Sierra (occasionally they have darn tough) for like half the price they'd be at REI. They tend to have other socks paralleling DT in quality for $12-15 - I like smart wool socks and recently found Patagonia at Sierra. Maui jim don't tend to turn up there so I'd go with the glasses

  It’s a shame Ibex is no longer a company. They made amazing products that weren’t cheap, for sure, but were damn good. Smartwool is pretty good from what I’ve experienced, though the moths seem to like it more than my other stuff.

  Check sierra. I got Smartwool and terramar merino sets there for under $50 each and recently saw similar prices. The terramar has pilled a bit after heavy consistent use for 2 winters, the Smartwool has not. That said, I do also really like my synthetic sets from 32 degrees cool. They cost me under $20/set and look brand new after 3 years. As has been mentioned they do get a lot stinkier than the merino.

  Reasonably priced natural fiber clothing

  I shop on Vinted for clothes because natural fibers are so pricey. Pact are good for leggings and basics, Dillinger, smartwool, and icebreaker for merino, I also have a few 100% merino wool tops by karrimor that I love love love. I found them in a massive clearance sale on sports direct and got four black and four grey tops. But I’d happily buy them again even if they weren’t on sale. Had them for nearly two years now and they look new. The leggings didn’t hold up as well, but I also wore them nearly daily for two years ago. Son de flor make the most amazing linen dresses and I got all of mine exclusively on Vinted for £45-80 each over the last year and a half. It’s probably my all time fav clothing brand. Uniqlo have good basics that are natural as well, and I heard good things about quince but haven’t tried them myself. If you don’t mind bamboo viscose, I have leggings from fishers finery that are ace. The crotch area seams aren’t amazing now that I’ve abused them in the gym and wore them all the time, but they lasted well over a year as well and have pockets! They’re a mid of bamboo viscose, organic cotton, and some elastane, but it’s hard to escape elastane unless you buy 100% merino.

  Sierra trading post has great prices on wool baselayers.  My husband and I nordic ski and we buy alot of smartwool at Sierra at great prices plus you don't need much, you can start with one or 2 sets and a few pairs of socks.

  I've had icebreaker and Smartwool. The Smartwool is still going 12 years later while the icebreaker bit the dust after 5 year. But the reason is because the icebreaker was so much more comfortable for high intensity that I wore them all the time, eventually shedding then to pieces while riding my dirt bike in the woods and constantly getting swiped by thorns.

  Baselayers can be warm but it's optional - you can get all of the warmth you need from a puffer, insulated shell...etc. The non-negotiable function of a baselayer is moisture management, which synthetics do better than wool. It is true that wool takes longer to smell and insulates better when wet, but if you can wring out your synthetic layer it will be better than wool in every way but smell and perhaps how it feels against the skin. Further, if you don't like fiddly washing routines wool may not be for you either. I wear smartwool baselayers exclusively, so I'm not a wool hater, but much of what you read on reddit is going to be bandwagoning gear fetishism. Cheap poly baselayers are great if you can wash them or swap them out regularly and you shouldn't break the bank on wool if you don't have the money; you're not missing that much.

  I have some Smartwool baselayers (the version that is now called “Classic” going on 25 years. The newest ones are 5-6 years. I prefer icebreaker for its fit and shape retention for things like snowboarding or anything more active. Smartwool tends to bag out on me especially since I’m not washing it much because of wool’s great natural anti odor. Once I wash and throw it in the dryer, it gets back to the original size and shape. I don’t have this shape retention problem with Icebreaker no matter how long I wear it for before washing but I usually line dry Icebreaker. My Icebreakers are about 6-7 years old, the newest one being 3. I have not had any durability issues with it but I’m using the Oasis 200 line.

  Personally I’m not a fan of icebreaker. Too many bad reviews coupled with a lot of people who have brought me their baselayers to repair when they got damaged.  However I do know several people who swear by icebreaker.  I have Smartwool ones which I find are fairly durable. My partner wears his winter biking and his original set is now 4ish years old and no signs of damage so far.  There are also a couple of euro brands whose name escapes me right now but they definitely wear well. If you are also canadian check Simply Merino too. I don’t personally own any but people I know really, really like them. Also remember to dry flat, use a wool safe detergent and wash as needed! That will extend the lifetime of your baselayers significantly.

  I know everyone is bragging about wool. I prefer my Sitka and stone glacier heavyweight synthetics over my 250gms smart wool base layer sets. Stationary while fishing I'm much warmer in the higher end synthetics. Theory is the wool is too damn breathable for stationary cold.

  Bombas- have they crashed & burned?

  Bombas sent only half my holiday order and cs so far has refused to refund my money for the socks I was charged for but never even shipped from their warehouse. Have filed a BBB complaint and suggest others do the same if they’re jerking you around too. Scammers need to go away…and p.s. love smartwool and their online gifting feature.

  Best winter parka money can buy?

  I wear the Canada Goose Trillium Parka along with a Smartwool base layer on very cold days (Chicago suburbs here). Had days of 20 degrees below zero a few years ago and the hood was very effective at keeping my head warm (fox fur lining). Layers are your best friend and look for quality- you need not spend and arm and a leg but there are better brands out there. I have an Eddie Bauer down jacket that I still use and I have had it since 1994 when I was a freshman at the University of Illinois. Best coat ever 😀

  100% wool base layers, like those from Smartwool can drastically improve warmth. Fleece midlayers like Patagonia’s R1 can add to that. I understand it would be preferable not to have to layer and for the parka to be sufficient but you seem to be on the extreme low end of the bell curve when it comes to perceiving coldness.

  I only wear over the calf socks. Darn Tough is fine, but I have wide feet, and they are very decidedly NOT wide. Though they keep my feet warm on site, they really mess up my little toes. I'm fully back on Smartwool.

  I’m also bald. I found a very lightweight Smartwool, wool beanie that is extremely thin and lightweight. Like t- shirt thin. It is perfect for 90% of the winter, and tucks easily in my coat pocket. In extreme cold, I can use it under another hat as a base layer. wool is breathable and wicks moisture away.

  Best Darn Tough Socks for Year Round Use

  Smartwool hike lows, are my go to. Warm in winter and great in summer also. I keep adding a pair or two each year and now have a solid 10 or so to run through each week. Honestly wish there would add more than the three colorways.

  Recommendations for Wintergloves ( leather wool combo preferably)

  For best warmth: mittens. But my partner uses Hestra gloves 90% of the Canadian winter (down to -30C including windchill on the regular) when walking our dogs.  On days that are extra cold he wears wool liners in his gloves. We have older Smartwool ones but there are various options. The Smartwool ones have held up better than some of the other liners he has previously tried.  In general wool or wool/silk liners are a great choice to boost the warmth of whatever you are using.

  As a fellow baldy, variety is your friend. I have three Smartwool hats of varying thickness that get me through pretty much anything. I have a thinner one that I use for warmer cool days and winter runs, a thicker one for most of the winter, and a boiled wool version for the really cold days. All have lasted for several years and are still in great shape.

  Smartwool hasn’t been good in my experience. My Smartwool socks got holes quicker than any other socks I’ve ever purchased. And this is compared to cheap athletic socks and casual socks from Old Navy or Target. I’m not hard on my socks, but those Smartwool socks were worn to see-through in about 10 wears.

  Cashmere and merino from J.Crew and Banana Republic cause irritation. Should I try higher-end brands or look for alternatives?

  I knit and mostly use animal fibers, primarily wool. I know a lot of other knitters and allergies to wool are not uncommon. If you have trouble with cashmere, you will probably also have trouble with mohair (goat). Alpaca is more tolerable for a lot of people as other comments have mentioned, so that’s a good idea to check out. If merino from J. Crew type shops bothers you, check the washing instructions on the sweater. You might be sensitive to all wool, or only untreated/non-“superwash” wool. If you can machine wash it like most Smartwool items and wool socks, you may not find it so irritating. This doesn’t mean “dry clean only” on a sweater will rule it out for you necessarily (I typically ignore that and hand wash regardless-but rougher wool doesn’t bother my skin) but it might make it easier to find some starter pieces that will not bother you and will be easy care. Superwash wool is processed so it can be machine washed without it felting, which also makes it more tolerable for people with wool sensitivities (not 100% of the time but it’s pretty common). There are trade offs-superwash wool doesn’t behave totally the same as untreated wool, the processing of wool into superwash does involve plastic-but for incorporating natural fibers into your wardrobe as someone with skin sensitivities, it might be an easier option. If you check out brands that do more athletic or outerwear wool items like Smartwool, Darn Tough socks, Meriwool, you may have better luck because those types of companies typically use superwash wool to make things easier to launder. REI has a lot of that kind of thing in the US, and other sporting goods stores. Since you shared women’s wear links, I personally really like Wool& for dresses (Maggie t-shirt dress is my fave) and WoolX for thick leggings (“Stella” for MN winters) and tops (long sleeve, short sleeve, some pullover and hoodie options). Wool& and WoolX are easy care/superwash wool, but I don’t think you would be able to go try things on at a store from either of those companies. I wear Wool& dresses year round and lighter weight leggings when it’s not frigid. They wash well, breathe, and hold up long term nicely, I have had several for 6-7 years that still look great.

  Mini Swiss Army Knife (or those cute fish ones from Mikov) were a hit last year.   I have the SmartWool 100% merino wool liners and really like them. My hands always get super-cold and they did a great job as standalones at keeping my hands comfortable and able to use my touchscreen on windy/cold walks last week that normally would have had me using bulkier gloves. I do winter photography on a regular camera, so need both touchscreen and dexterity for small buttons and dials and these are way better than any other liners I have used in prior years in combination with gloves and mittens

  Always becomes a question of “why wouldn’t you buy from a known genuine supplier” for any of these. To save ~5-25%? Just not worth the gamble. Darn Tough, Smartwool, etc can all be had for 25% off from the major outdoor retailers a few times per year.

  My 2025 BIFL products this year, how about you?

  Leatherman replaced 2 multi tools for me this year for free. My Smartwool socks just turned 10 years old and still going. Got my Frye boots resoled - like new. Grip6 belt still looks new. I also learned how to darn holes in clothing, more of a BIFL skill than product.

  Better socks. Switched to merino wool. Darn tough are the best. Smartwool a nice second. I have alpaca socks too which are super warm. But nice socks go a long way. My feet aren’t damp when I get home. They work in my clogs, boots, and hiking shoes. They’re beautiful. And darn tough has a life time guarantee.

  Looking for a sturdy winter jacket that won’t make me overheat

  May not be your style, but I layer a 150 gsm merino baselayer with a nice midlayer like a puffer or a fleece, then a softshell over everything. In my case, I like the Smartwool Classic Thermal, a puffy vest I've had for years (brand went out of business) or the Patagonia Nano Air Hoody, and then a softshell over everything. Or a hardshell with pit zips over everything if there's lots of rain, snow, or wind. You can always add/remove layers when you get colder/hotter. I like Outdoor Research for the price, but Black Diamond, Patagonia, Naronna, Rab, Mountain Hardwear, etc all have decent offerings. Just head to REI and see what you like. Premium European brands like Mammut and Ortovox have some good styles too, but pricey. I personally don't love Arc'teryx and I don't think they're as BIFL as others say (or maybe as BIFL as they used to be) but some people swear by them.

  Darn Tough socks are too tight, am I the only one?

  I size up for both darn tough and Smartwool and it works out great. I have wide feet so I figure the extra length is going to the circumference. It's all just knitting so the stretch and accommodation works both ways as opposed to woven fabric which doesn't.

  There's no BIFL underwear, but you should get way more than a year or two out of them. I like ExOfficio and SmartWool. ExOfficio have lasted many years for me. I also got some SmartWool merino boxer briefs a couple years ago, and I like them a lot. They are expensive, though.

  Looking for a full outdoor winter clothes system.

  I look at it this way. Baselayer - merino for less active, synthetic for more active Mid layer - gridfleece (more active) or merino sweater (less active) Insulation layer - Heavy fleece or down (less active) or synthetic puffy (more active) Shell - At the very least windproof (eg Gore Windstopper) or even better windproof and waterproof (Goretex Pro) You'll also need - high quality headwear, gloves, heavy wool socks (Darn Tough). A muff with handwarmer slots is nice, as well as a fleece gaiter for your neck Brands I like: Icebreaker, LL Bean, Sitka, First Lite, Smartwool, Darn Tough, REI's house brand, Arc'teryx. Maybe reach out to some of these companies, tell them what you do and see if they'll hook you up with a pro discount.

  Why is it so hard to find well-made clothes that aren't insanely priced?

  3/4 of my wardrobe are literally 20 years old and they are off the rack “low tier” stuff. I have pictures of me in these same cloths from my early 20’s. What cloths are you buying and what are you using to clean them!? Not saying there aren’t horribly made clothing from fast casual clothing lines, but I have a lot of Walmart off the rack stuff that’s been holding up a looooong time. The items I will spend more money on from better brands are socks - my smartwool socks last a long time, like decades. The elastic on underwear just wear out over time from any brand but I like breathable sport Reebok boxer briefs I find at warehouse clubs.

  Smartwool makes a leather glove called Ridgeway. I bought a pair a couple of years ago and they are fantastic. They are lined with Marino Smartwool, so they are warm and comfy. They are not full leather (the back of the hand is just wool) so it looks a little funky, but this is function over form. It works well to keep the hand at a great temp.

  Will this survive me the North Dakota winter?

  I haven’t lived there but I did visit for a week long hunting trip (-30 windchill). It was cold but not miserable. It’s a dry cold which helps, while it gets colder than the Great Lakes region does it didn’t feel as bad as the Great Lakes can. If you’re going from car to building you won’t be too bad with thick socks, pants, shirt, sweater, coat. If you plan to spend more than 10 min outside bundle up big. A heavy thermal layer is worth its weight in gold. Under armor and smart wool make great ones. Your standard long sleeve shirt and pants work fine as a mid-layer works better if you wear fleece lined pants and a sweater. Outer/shell layer should be a nice wind proof jacket with some hearty insulation, long coat if you don’t want to wear a shell layer over your bottoms. I personally like bibs/coveralls/overalls but I know most people can wear them all the time

  If you’re working outdoors or in cold environments, go with merino wool. It’s warm even when damp, doesn’t smell, and lasts for years if you take care of it. Icebreaker, Smartwool, and Minus33 all make solid merino long johns — they’re not cheap, but you’ll only need to buy once. Avoid full synthetic ones unless you’re moving constantly; they trap sweat and get smelly fast.

Zero holes in any of my pairs and I’ve used and abused them for years now. As for low cut running socks, I have zero holes and zero complaints for my Smartwool socks.   Are these their wool socks or another material? I've learned with wool socks, you can't go 100% wool or they won't hold up. I've been wearing Smartwool and Darn Tough wool socks. They're mixed blended material with nylon or polyester at breaking points and wool where it matters.

  I went through this same progression. Started with Bombas, and the holes would show up in the same spot in pretty short order. Went to darn tough, same thing happened, but it took a little longer. Went to smartwool socks, and those are holding up better than anything I've tried.

  I did the same as you...fell in love with the feeling & look of the merino Bombas at a local store, bought several pairs, they ALL developed holes in the toes and heels within 2-3 months of being worn IN ROTATION with my other brands of merino and alpaca socks. I contacted Bombas for replacement for the first pair; they didn't make it very easy AT ALL, but I did eventually get some credit on their site. After ALL the other pairs developed holes so quickly, I swore off buying Bombas. For the record, I do NOT wear socks without shoes, I don't wear socks to bed, I don't have long toenails or tight/rubbing shoes, and I rotate my sneakers every day. I have Smartwool socks that are TEN years old, with no holes. (Most of my Smartwools are 5-6 years old and look GREAT.) I also have Darn Tough socks, but like you OP I don't prefer them as they shrink TERRIBLY in the normal wash and are now tighter/shorter and thicker and uncomfortable to wear. \*\*\*Worth nothing about Darn Tough: I gift pairs of them to my Dad, he has had no problems. I am female and usually buy the femme looking designs and THOSE are what I've had issues with. The standard black/gray tall crew socks I get my dad don't seem to have the shrinking issue BUT I think my parents wash their laundry in cold. I have had one pair of Wigwams I owned for a couple of years, they got appropriated by my SO who has now had them for about 3 years now, still going strong NO HOLES. He wears them in steel toed boots.

  I have a headband from them that looks to be similar material. I wear it quite a bit and it has not stretched, which head bands are very prone to doing. It is also warmer than it’s thickness would imply. I know a lot of people would disagree with me, but for socks, I think smartwool lasts significantly longer than its competitors. I can go through a pair of darn tough in about a year, and I have smartwools that are going on 10 years. They also breathe better than others I’ve worn.

  Buy darn tough or smart wool. Wash them together with other small items, no t shirts or pants. Cold water, little detergent. Hang dry. The less you put wool in the dryer, the better. Will last you ages. I have smart wool from 15 years ago still trucking. Low odor too

  I will say this, don't trust influencers when they tell you to buy X product. I've seen a lot of paid influencers push Bombas socks. I don't trust them. I buy the merino socks blend at Costco, 1 pack every year, darn tough and smart wool when they're on sale. I don't consider socks BIFL. They get a lot of tear and wear from friction. It's an item that needs to be replaced every year to a year and a half IMO. Just like panties.

  No socks are BIFL and I got tired of spending $20+ per pair on socks that got holes in them from regular use. I have had the same issues with Bombas. They keep getting holes, I go through their warranty and get replacements, but those keep getting holes too and after ordering enough replacements for socks with holes, Bombas seems to flag your account and makes it a major hassle every time. I’ve tried so many others, smartwool, feetures, darn tough and many many other brands that get recommended on this sub. I honestly dislike my darn tough socks despite everyone’s recommendations on that brand. They slide around on my feet more than the others and just aren’t as comfortable. And of course they eventually get holes. They do seem to go the longest of any of the name brands I’ve tried before getting holes though. Bombas has been my favorite as far as comfort is concerned, but they get holes so easily and quickly that I just can’t keep buying more socks and spending more money. I always go for the merino wool athletic socks and the next time I get holes, they’re out of stock and/or have gone up in price so I still have to shell out more money to get a warranty replacement. I have honestly found that the cheaper socks I’ve gotten that aren’t merino wool last much longer, but many aren’t as comfortable. I’ve tried a bunch on Amazon and found 2 that are close to Bombas in comfort level. There may be more, but I’m a size 14 and have to get xl socks. https://a.co/d/dmqnjiz https://a.co/d/aiNWmf8 They go slightly higher on the ankle than bombas (just slightly), but I haven’t gotten a hole yet, and when I do I’ll feel much better about replacing them at $2 each (regularly on sale). Also they all match whereas the bombas always come in different colored sets so once one sock gets a hole, that pair can’t be worn anymore. I just got tired of paying so much and continuing to have to pay more every time they got a hole (even with the warranty) so I figured I’d look for alternatives. There aren’t any socks that are BIFL, darn tough is the closest I’ve tried, but I don’t find them to be comfortable and I’ve tried a bunch of different models of theirs.

  I think socks finally did it for me. I used to wear fun fashion socks that were terrible for your feet - then switched to smart wool and darn tough and BOY howdy was there a difference. Then I started buying quality clothing, then quality music gear (I’m a musician), now I simply refuse to entertain the lower levels of quality. Even if I’m dabbling in a new hobby I’ll stretch for the mid grade tools.

  The only Smartwool socks I’ve replaced have been because my husband, and mom steal them. I live in Florida so I don’t wear a ton of their clothes but I love those socks.

  Bombas Socks are not BIFL quality

  I absolutely LOVE the Bombas Merino Crew socks - incredibly comfortable, aren't too tight but don't fall down either, nice and breathable in winter boots - but I agree they are a single season purchase, which is super frustrating. After a winter almost all of them have worn thin on the heel and pads of the feet, and at least a few have holes (and this is rotating between 6-10 pairs). For as much as I enjoy the socks, I've stopped buying them because it feels so wasteful to have to get new ones every year (and yes I know Bombas has a great return policy - but it still feels wasteful even if they are willing to replace them). Darn Tough seems to be customer dependent - for me they "felt" together after a few wears and washings (even using cold water wash), and that makes my toes super cramped and uncomfortable. Smartwool has been the closest BIFL socks I've found. I get the lightly padded options (which I think helps with pressure points wearing thin), and they last me at least 5+yrs per pair. Then when a pair finally gets a hole or fails in some way, they have a robust quality assurance policy and will replace them (while also taking the old ones and recycling them).

  Darn Tough socks fit my feet...weirdly so I donated them. My closest to BIFL are my Wigwams, Smart Wools, and American Trench wool/silk blends. All made in the USA.

  Darn Tough is good. Smartwool is good too, but I think the nylon "skeleton" in them is more obvious. Whether that's good or bad is probably personal preference. But I think that makes smartwool a tiny bit less comfortable but last a bit longer. If you try and pull darn touch socks on from the top, you'll probably end up making holes on the heel seams eventually. Gotta get your heel in there before pulling them up. This is probably more significant on longer socks. And if you're getting cushioned socks, the cushion is going to eventually go away. Not because bad quality, just the nature of wear and tear on socks.

  I've had to darn some Bombas twice in the past 4 years and I returned another pair under warranty because it developed holes near the ankle.. I wouldn't purchase Bombas again. I have Smartwool socks that are 10 years old and are still holding up nicely.

  I have both DT and SW. My SW have lasted longer than the DT. But I think it’s due to fit as DT are far more snug. I have pairs of SW that are close to 15 yrs old. They are beginning to show wear. I’m at the point where I have been switching all my cheap socks for merino wool. I still have a few of the anklets from another brand. I wear them when painting or doing something where I could spill nasty stuff on them. If you want thin wool socks REI sells liner socks. They are the thickness of most of my socks. With a coupon they’re cheaper. The other cost cutting option is to check out the discontinued socks at either SW or DT. I got some odd colors and designs for about 40-50% off. Doesn’t matter since they don’t show.

  Try a different brand of socks. DT has a lot of nylon in them for added durability, but nylon gets VERY hot. They don't work for me, however, Smartwool and Duckworth socks I can wear in 100˚+ heat with no problems. Like, I can wear thicker hiking socks with rubber Muck boots and not be bothered. The DT socks lose their merino and you are left wearing nylon socks, lol. That's how they can get away with having a lifetime warranty on them. But I work on a golf course in Nashville, and the heat index is 100+ every day. I wear Smartwool and Merinotech boxer briefs. I wear them 2 days in a row, sometimes 3 days because they don't ever smell. Merino is the best material for all seasons. I have 8 pair in total which doesn't sound like much, but again you can easily get multiple days out of them. Wash in cold water, no soap/detergent and hang to dry - they will last a long time.

  They \[Smartwool\] do make boxer briefs, and that's what I wear. I also wear Merinotech. Merino is the obvious choice for this. I work outside all summer long and I can wear my merino boxer briefs 2, sometimes 3 days in a row. I wash them without soap and hang them to dry. No smells, ever. Perfect for traveling, working in the heat, the cold, whatever.

  I use ExOfficio wash and go series. They're made to wash in a bathroom sink and dry overnight, and they're treated to be anti microbial so they don't stink. And the company is right: you can take two pair on a trip. You wash one in the sink and dry it overnight and change in the morning. They don't stink even after days of this. I like them in warm weather because they dry quickly after sweating in them and they don't stink nearly as bad as cotton or other synthetics. For socks, I have a pair of smart wool thin running socks that are great. They handle sweat pretty well. They stink less than cotton or polyester socks do. I'm not sure if they make underwear. I think they're a wool blend though, not pure wool.

  Just got some of the running pairs with the tabs on the back and so far like them. The only thing I don't like is that you're not supposed to wash them like every single time you wear them, and they're super expensive at like $19 a pair. But they're really comfortable and have good cushion. And it's nice to know they cover for life. I still think it's a bit ridiculous to replace all of my socks with them. Will still be searching for other brands. Stance has some good ones that have the tabs that have held up really well over the last year, and you can get 2-3 pairs for ~$20, especially when on sale, but they aren't merino wool, so don't breathe as well. Haven't jumped into Smart Wool yet, but I've seen them in outdoorsy stores and they feel super comfortable. Not sure what their price point is, but that's an easy lookup

  What style darn tough sock do you have and why would you go to bat for it?

  I have a couple pairs of their lightweight Lifestyle crew socks that are tight across the top of my foot, primarily where the foot and leg meet. I’m a size 12.5 US or on the small size of their XL.  I also have one pair of their lightweight hikers that fit ok, but not great.  Their sizing seems to change based on style but my experience with three pairs and two styles is isn’t the greatest sample size. I gave them to my kid who would fall into the upper size of their Large and they fit ok.  I find Smartwool and Icebreaker to have more consistent sizes across various styles. Durability is fine with both in my experience.

  I’m going to second that, Fox Rivers were terrible for me. Not sure if I have weird feet but got a bunch of blisters, not nearly as much “noticeable wicking” as darn tough or smart wool. Maybe I got the wrong pairs, maybe I have weird feet. But after 3 pairs and the same results they were thrown out. Also stunk to high heaven.

  I also advocate for merino wool blends. Reddit loves Darn Tough, but I bought several pairs in different styles and their weave is tighter which seems less breathable and they are very narrow and constricting. My feet are not especially wide. Smartwool works well for me. I tried Wigwam brand but they wore very quickly. YMMV but try merino nylon blends.

  I'm happy with mine. Comparable to smart wool. Superior to cotton gym socks. These also aren't your grampys wool work socks. Fit fairly tight and snug. I have sweaty feet, but if I wear them to the office I don't mind using them a 2nd day My wife found some (either DT or SW) at Marshalls half price. Anyways I would recommend DT or competitor sock

  Merino Wool socks worth it?

  Hi! I'm sort of late to the conversation. I've switched to merino wool blend socks, with a higher percent of merino wool. I used to have very sweaty feet and that would cause them to stink. Switching has helped that 100%. I have a few Ice Breakers, Smart Wool and Bombas. Bombas are not as thick as I'd prefer, but they are usually the ones I wear the most. I just wish I could find some that are solid white for when I wear white tennis shoes. The closest I've found was the beige from Bombas. I don't like all the designs and stuff I've seen on many merino socks I've seen either.

  Some people swear by Darn Tough and they have a lifetime warranty. I somehow manage to get holes in the same place on each pair (back of the ankle somehow) and don't want to deal with it in the future. A lot of people are saying Bombas. Mine have held up fairly well over the last year, but I noticed yesterday that they are starting to look thin on the toes which is also odd. Personally, my BIFL is SmartWool, specifically the running low ankle socks with targeted cushion. I am in-between sizes and used to size down for a tighter fit but tried sizing up the last time. I will probably size up again and haven't had any signs of wear besides some piling.

  That makes sense. Friends told me years ago (2009/10), how great Smartwool socks were. I ended up thinking they were so-so. BUT, their base layers and shirts are favorites of mine (and thanks to a friend who is good at darning clothing my favorite long sleeve is on year 5). Sock-wise, I am obsessed with Darn Tough.

  This is the exact problem I've had with Darn Tough socks - they shrink and sort of felt once washed. I wash on cold, ultra low heat dryer, still they shrink so much they become uncomfortable to wear. Whereas I've had great luck with Smartwool - they don't last forever, but usually at least 5 years (a few are going on 8). The ones that do wear out just thin a bit at pressure points, and you can always send them back for new ones so 🤷‍♀️

  For me, wool is the way to go. Linnen rubs me the wrong way (no pun intended). The different merino brands out there even have ultra light weights for the heat.   I bought DT, Smartwool and Cloudline socks in Merino wool 3 pairs each to see who’s lasted longest, and after 7 years I still have 9 pairs of good socks. I have a busy lifestyle workout and work lots of disc golf. I think it might boil down to care. That’s why they all have such long warranties if you take care of them they’ll perform.

  I like darn tough for thick socks but their thin socks are just so-so. It’s not just about the money, or having a warranty. I prefer smartwool for thinner socks. No lifetime warranty but I find they last longer overall, have less pilling and I find them more comfortable. This subreddit has this weird cult-like vibe towards darn tough, but it’s okay for one company to not be your end all, be all.

  Top BIFL Household Items for Starting Over

  I am a sustainability educator and finding things that last are a bit part of that. I’ve done quite a bit of research on possible options. Some of these I have (*) while others have been HIGHLY recommended to me. I would still check out the brand as some people who have had their (insert brand name item that they got 15 years ago here) have said that quality has diminished in recent years and won’t last as long.   That's disappointing because I assume they used to be better, at least based on how many people I trust told me they loved them over the years.   Piling is normal for bombas. They’re terrible socks. Luckily, they are very nice about providing refunds in matters like this, at least they were for me on every single pair I purchased. My oldest socks in the best condition are smartwool, although they don’t make them like they used to.

  Recommendations for Boxer Briefs

  My favorite are the merino wool ones from Smartwool. Icebreaker makes some good ones too, but I don't find them to be as comfortable as Smartwool's. Be careful when buying to get the merino boxer briefs, because they now have a line that's mostly polyester. I think they call them "everyday" or something. I also like ExOfficio. I've been using them for many years. I know that it's often said they don't make them like they used to, and while that is true, they're still pretty good quality. I don't find the give-and-go 2.0 boxer briefs to be very comfortable and prefer the original style. However, for regular boxers, the 2.0 ones are very nice.

  Took the double plunge today

  Mine are cool enough in the summer and warm enough in the winter. Of course, in the summer I'm wearing Darn Tough no show or ankle socks and in the winter I'm wearing smartwool up to my knees. I find that they breathe well enough.

  I have had my pairs of smartwool socks, specially the light cushion hiking socks, as my everything socks since 2018 and I will die for them. The heels have been heavily darned by now as of the last year and they still rock. If you pick the right design you can wear them with suits, boots, running shoes, or in your birthday suit as house slippers and they function great.

  linen/high heat summer durable non-transparent clothing

  Not really what youre asking, but thin wool socks are actually really nice in the summer. People think of wool as warm, but if you buy thinner socks, it wicks moisture and keeps your feet dry, especially when paired with real leather footwear.  I like Darn Tough socks, but REI and other places have lots of options (Ice Breaker and Smartwool are also good, but IB and Darn Tough have lifetime warranties.)

  Smartwool. I do have a lot of Bomba running socks and they’ve held up well. They are pilling, but they’re good structurally. I have a lot of their super thick winter socks and non-slip knitted winter socks and they’re holding up really well, considering how much I wear them around the house. All of the socks I’ve talked about are actually my house slippers. I don’t work and I wear socks at home instead of shoes and slippers. So they get a ton of use with related direct contact with our tile and LVP floors.

  Best shoes to buy???

  I would get some merino socks for starters. Smartwool, Darn Tough, Icebreaker, etc. Then I would get a pair of moc toe boots with a wedge sole. Danner Bull Run, White's Perry Select, Red Wing, Thorogood, etc. The Danners and Thorogoods feel great from the get-go, the others will take a week or two to break-in. I might consider adding a cushy insole if I felt so inclined. Then After a month or so, I would buy a 2nd pair...maybe something completely different - Lems or Xero, zero-drop maybe? I would rotate them. If they have to have safety-toes, I'd probably get another boot with a wedge sole. I work outside on a golf course year-round. I have a locker full of shoes/boots, with more in my car. Like you, I do a lot of miles on my feet. I have a lot of conditions to contend with, however, I am constantly changing my shoes. If my feet start to hurt or I don't have the right shoes on for what I need to do, I change them. I wear a pair to/from work, and might wear 3 different pair in a day. Again, being on my feet all day, I can't afford to have any issues with my feet/footwear. The only thing worse is just being cold and wet all day, lol.

  They used to have a "Run" line on plain white athletic socks in lengths ranging from ankle to mid calf that were perfect for walking and running and general wear, but they seem to have replaced that line with "Targeted Run" that are a lot more expensive, but I have no idea how they work. I'm still using the old athletic socks, most are 4-5 years old and I wear them daily.

  i would go light weight in terms of cushioning. the utra light are fine but they will wear through faster on you. they are the only ones i ever put holes in. and they are not that much thinner than the light weights. I have a few light weight but mostly mid weight which are fine year round, and 1 pair of heavy weight i wear in the winter if i am going to be standing around for a while outside.

  The Hike Crew Sock is good, it has minimal cushioning. My feet don't get over heated in them even when it's hot out. I also like Wide Open, which is a sub brand of Darn Tough. They run hotter, though after a wash or two they get comfortable.

  Check out thin Injinji toe socks or xotoes, both of those have been really good to me. If you want really thin wool socks SmartWool cycling socks (zero cushion) are what I wear over toe socks when I'm breaking in new boots and don't want more sock thickness.

  Need crew socks that will last

  I used to have a whole drawer full of Thorlos, but I have switched to wearing wool all year. At first I was buying Smartwool, then I switched to IceBreakers, and finally to Darn Tough. IceBreakers were about as good as Darn Tough but I don't see them around as much. Darn Tough are easy to find, very cushioned, and last for years. I have 6 or 7 pairs and I have yet to wear a pair out in over 5 years.

  Recommendations for a glove liner that’s also good worn on its own? My ten-year-old Oakleys are finally tearing at the seams, and I don’t know if I’ll be able to sew them back up.

  Following. I do a lot of outdoor recreation in North Dakota that requires dexterity (photography, ice fishing, opening dog poop bags ha, etc). I've found the Seirus All Weather gloves to be the warmest for their dexterity, but they aren't water proof as sometimes advertised. Also, the harder rubber grip eventually separates from the gloves. I currently have a pair of SmartWool liners that are 2 years old, but I've patched the fingertips and they're not water resistant at all (usually not an issue in our cold dry weather, or when worn in a mitten shell. I have a pair of light Gordini gloves that were really good, but can't find those anymore. The Seirus and Gordini are made warm by the sherpa lining inside. Note: I'd never recommend any glove to keep your fingers warm, let alone a light pair or liner, but paired with a loose, easy to remove mitten shell, these are very practical and work even in sub-zero temperatures. As for everything in winter, looser fitting is better than tight, so you're balancing dexterity with warmth. If you find a good pair that fits you, buy 2-3 because they will quit making them or change the design by the time you need be ones! If you need more options, search hunting brands (kuiui, sitka, first light) because they often compete to be dextrous and warm.

  Cool man, that's you. But no, it's not. I've got 12 darn tuff and a 16 or so smartwool socks in varying models, heights and thicknesses for everything from daily, work, hiking, hunting climbing and skiing. Darn tuff is a good sock. Not as good as smart wool sock in my opinion based on my own use. Both brands having varying wear and aging based on how often they are used but on the whole look in a like newish condition damn near and I have been rotating these socks for 8+ years with 1 pair lost to mistreatment (Smart wool)my own choosing and one warranty replacement in all that time (the Darn Tuff and were replaced even though the holes were created by a new puppy who bit while we were playing and ripped them, even knowing this Darn Tuff still sent me a replacement free of charge and allowed me to keep the old pair) Maybe your socks are damaged, nobody is arguing they aren't but one man's opinion does not the truth make and Darn tuf are good socks.

  So lots to unpack here. First, I was referring to brands that sell and ship from themselves on Amazon, meaning the seller is the brand, and it ships from them not Amazon (these items will say "sold and shipped by: brand." Its pretty much the same thing as going on the brand website and using Amazon payments to check out instead of paypal or entering your payment details. Secondly, the "co-mingling inventory" is something Amazon does with third party sellers merchandise that is FBA. They don't co-mingle their own merchandise (ships and sold by Amazon/Zappos) with third party seller's. There has been so much misinformation spread about Amazon and "co-mingling" that still continues to get spread around. Needless to say, buy from the brand directly, whether on Amazon or their website, or from a reputable seller, including Amazon. Avoid anything from third party sellers or that ships from Amazon from a third party seller. A perfect example is Smartwool socks sold by GoBros. On Amazon, you can see they are sold by GoBros, but if you want prime they ship from Amazon. Since GoBros is a third party seller their inventory can be co-mingled (since their a large retailer probably not). A lot of people don't realize you can scroll down the sellers list and there is a Sold by Shipped By GoBros for the same price, it just won't be prime since it isn't shipped by Amazon.

  Huh, that's an interesting place for it to rub through. Usually holes are on the back of the heel, or the toe where your big toenail ends. The part you rubbed through makes me wonder if you have a metatarsal issue? Check out metatarsal pads. But regardless the socks shouldn't have worn so fast and if you contact smartwool they'll probably exchange them.  I work in the hosiery industry and in my experience Smartwool wants their customers to be happy!

  This sub is oddly obsessed with socks haha That said, I still prefer SmartWool over darn tough. DT does last quite long, but I have found that they just don't fit very well for me at all, very uncomfortable. SW, on the other hand, are the most comfortable socks I've ever worn, and in my experience, they last quite long as well. Experiences and tastes will vary, ofc.

  Well, they were bought by Timberland 10 years ago. I've been wearing them for a couple decades now, and they've stayed good. I've actually liked their modern stuff better than some of their very early stuff. Most of their moderns stuff follows a "newer" design they started many years ago. It worked well enough, they just kind of spread the formula across everything. It works well, and I have basically no problems with the socks. They'll slowly wear thin after several years of use, sure, but they have no particular failure mode either. Like they don't fall apart, the elastic doesn't go, and you don't wear a toe out, nothing. The whole sock just kind of thins holistically together until you eventually get a hole...somewhere. For me, that's not commonly even at a pressure point like a toe. They also don't wear worse during their entire life. They don't start falling down. They don't get loose and stretched out. They don't exhibit strange wear. They just...thin...over a number of years. It's about as good as one can ask for.

  Sorry to hear your bad luck. I have about 6 or 8 pairs I bought in 2013 that I have worn very frequently... I'm just starting to wear through then now. Not a bad ROI, especially considering I got them half price.

  I've been buying two pairs of the same Smartwool socks for about six years now. Each year, there are small changes like the logo color, stitching details, and similar minor tweaks. But this year was the first time the material felt noticeably thinner. I'm assuming it's just a fluke for now, but it was a bit disheartening.

  some brands I’ve used or heard others on here support: Patagonia, Blundstone, Branwyn, Quince, Smartwool & mixed reviews on Lululemon align leggings but I do personally think they last at least 2x as long as other leggings if you take care of them & don’t put in the dryer

  A new or lesser known brand you're trying, hoping it becomes BIFL-ish

  Add smartwool socks, 100% Merino wool. A single pair of socks with extra padding on the toe and heel, prevented blisters in boots and running shoes. Very minimal pilling, and it took six months for a tiny hole to grow big enough for my toe to pop out. They are extremely breathable, dry quickly, and were some of the most comfortable socks I've ever owned. $15 on sale at REI and I wore them multiple times a week, every week, for almost 4 years. They survived the laundry machine two or three times a week. Although half the time I didn't dry them in the dryer. They are still wool.

  What type of activity will you be doing? If you're doing some high output you might prefer a midweight option like Smartwool that provides more breathability, and then rely on your parka's hood to do all the real work. Bonus points for midweight because it will fit under snowmobile helmets comfortably

  What are some BIFL brands that are manufactured cradle to grave in the USA?

  Just as good as Point6, DarnTough, and SmartWool. I like their tactical line that doesn’t have the added padding (lumps) on top of sock. They have some older hiker models that also don’t have added padding. When I want a slightly looser sock I where F2F. The others, I mentioned, can be a little tight at times. F2F also changed their warranty to copycat DarnTough’s warranty. They also make ‘Patagonia’ branded merino wool socks. Patagonia brand is highly respected for quality, so F2F must be doing something right.

  [Sizing Question] For men size 12, which size do you get from Darn Tough socks? L or XL?

  Same boat as you. I’m size 12 in most shoes. 11.5 in Red Wings. 12.5 in Altra Lone Peaks. The Darn Tough Men Hiker Micro Crew Midweight Hiking Sock in XL are way too long. Width is just right. The L are just right for length but they are very tight. Smart wool midweight hikers in L fit perfect. I’m considering trying Wide Open (by Darn Tough Brand) in large to see if that helps.

  House slippers for sweaty feet

  You can wear toe socks as others have suggested. When I am around the house I wear toe spreaders inside of not-too-tight wool socks. I prefer smartwool over darn tough, dark tough fit too tight around the toes. No slippers.

  3 in 1 winter jacket?

  As a fellow bicycle commuter in the Northeast US, and almost life-long outdoorsperson and tech clothing wearer— my insulated Mountain Hardwear jacket is probably the least-used piece of winter gear I own. For being active, it’s just too much warmth in that outer layer and causes a lot of problems regulating my body temperature. It seems you already understand the value of layering, which is great— but you’re also aware of the function of a shell outer layer but trying to avoid it. A 0°F day for me would consist of Smartwool long-sleeve base layer Merino wool full zip second layer Arc’teryx full zip hoodie (the ones I love have a face mask built into the inside of the hood— an absolute lifesaver!) Helly Hansen Seven J rain jacket I have a really nice Mountain Hardwear ski shell which is marginally more effective, but cycling will always kick up gross stuff from the roads so I tend to not use it. The Helly rain shell was like $100, is weatherproof, and since you are building layers of insulation, the shell doesn’t need to have any down/synthetic lining to be super effective in the cold; it cuts the wind from coming in and heat from escaping, but doesn’t turn you into an oven inside. Sorry this rambling reply doesn’t give you a 3-in-1 option, but my gist is that you’ll be surprised how much a waterproof outer shell, paired with some smart inner layers, will do to keep you warm.

  I’m a big fan of my smartwool glove liners. They don’t have sticky grip but do have touch screen fingers and are much warmer than what you have.

  Not saying that they aren't, but comparing them, they have a much different feel, with the smart wool feeling much nicer on the feet. That being said the price difference is kind of crazy. I bring my smart wool for hiking and kirklands for sleeping.

  Ibex is a quality merino brand from what I've seen. I'm a big fan of merino in general and I have pieces from Smartwool, Icebreaker, Ibex, and Filson. My favorite shirt is Ibex and I'd say Ibex and Icebreaker are probably tied for the best merino clothing I've personally tried. That said the item you've linked to appears to be a wool/polyester blend. It is mostly wool, but I've never tried any of Ibex's blended fabrics.

  If you bought them all at once then yes maybe an obsession. I have at least that many pairs of Smart Wools and Wigwams. That is about the only thing I ever ask for at Christmas time for the last 4 years. As a bachelor I enjoy having enough socks to be able to not do laundry every week. Also in the Winter I often double them up.

  I can give you my experience- I'm a really sweaty guy (in shape/athlete, but just tend to sweat). In very breathable shoes, cotton socks are fine, but in boots or any semi-substantial leather shoes, cotton socks will get damp and stinky pretty quickly (along with my shoes- which sucks to get that smell out). Wool socks, on the other hand, wick that sweat away and *regulate temperature* so well that I never have a problem. Seriously, wool is not just a winter sweater material- it has a ton of crazy properties to it that make it amazing for all sorts of clothing items year-round. Some of the thicker brands/varieties of wool socks (smart wool, darn tough) can be a bit too much in the hotter months (feet still stay dry, but they get a bit too hot), but Ibex's are great all year round. And yes, this sounds like an ad, but I'm just really enthusiastic about wool :p

  My wool sock brand of choice is Ibex- theirs tend to be a bit lighter weight- great for winter as well as summer- my smart wools and darn toughs tend to only get wear in the winter.
