  For sure cheaper tools have come a long way. It's really not about which is "best", but which is consistent. For many businesses it's about ordering the tool and depending on it without any research. And that's where Snap On still wins - the reputation. Unlike practically everyone else, they did not "sell out". If you buy a Snap On, it's going to be decent without a question. I don't own their tools either. Very rare here in central Europe where we have a lot of our own manufacturers. But the equivalent on reputation is the German Hazet... As a bit of a collector I have some flea market finds - one Snap On socket, one speed handle, one extension and one dual 80 ratchet. All very top end to use without a doubt.

  I agree in general however: > how much old snap-on or craftsmen tools are sitting in the bottom of a landfill? For basic hand tools it is easy to quantify quality. If you know how tight the machining/finish/forging/grinding/broaching is and what kind of metal with what hardness is used, you can undoubtedly define its quality for the task. Plenty of screwdrivers and wrenches are far inferior. Now, Snap On never cut corners in this department. Craftsman did not make their own tools anyway, it's just a name, but in general the older ones were sourced better than later (though some late US made production was really bad too). Recent V line was generally quality though, better than what you'd get in the past. The other thing is also when new tools are introduced that take unique ways to approach a problem. Like, you have 100 year old quality pliers and you have modern quality pliers. But e.g. knipex did combine a few things in the Cobras that you did not see combined before (positive lock engagement, adjustable with a box joint and not a lap joint, meaning it can be way lighter for the same grip strength) and it proved somewhat revolutionary. Or modern anti-slip wrenches (maybe snap on pioneered there?), same with sockets (pretty sure it was snap on there). Or Wera with the hex-plus profile. Three sides of the same coin, just in different forms, but this is a design you find on modern tools that old tools won't have no matter the quality lever.

  What’s a purchase that’s not fun, not flashy but now you swear by it?

  I was working a cannery in The Alutean Islands as an equipment maintenance technician, we had to provide our own tools. I showed up with a bunch of craftsman tools, which are great until the nearest place to get replacements is 2000 miles away. After the first season I replaced the craftsman with Snap-on. They are still good 40 years later.

  Which moment made you switch to the "buy it for life" mindset?

  I was working in the Alutian Islands t a seafood processing plant, doing equipment maintenance. The nearest tool/hardware store was 2000 miles away. I went up with a toolbox full of craftsman tools. At the end of the first season, most were bent, broken, or stretched. I replaced them with snap on. Nomore broken tools no more watching the open end wrenches stretch when you had to break that rusty nut free. Spend a little more, save your knuckles, reduce frustration.

  Please recommend a screwdriver set before I lose it on these curtain rods.

  I look for square shaft screwdrivers, so I can put a wrench on them to turn them, while pressing down. HF has some, snapon and mac do to for 4x the $

  Brands That Used to Be BIFL — But Aren't Anymore?

  Every tool brand except Snap-On. Even Mac is just the premium Stanley/Black and Decker (DeWalt being the middle child). It's fully assumed you'll either use the warranty or just toss it by every brand (again, except Snap-On as long as you're on a tool route and have a good dealer). Snap-On knows this, and can charge accordingly. (Though they are in a different problem, when you do use them professionally, and you don't care how you get the job done, just that it's done and you're paid... You'll abuse the tool. That warranty means you'll end up getting 5 or 6 wrenches for the price of one, and the original price has to reflect that)

  What's the best BIFL item you own?

  Pendleton blanket. Crock pot (basic 4qt), Technivorm Moccamaster, Baratza Encore, two Subarus, two Harleys (big twins), knives, Vitamix blender, Miele vacuum, Whirlpool drier and fridge, and some other stuff (Grundens, Patagonia apparel) , Snap On , Matco tools, etc, which at least (all in this list) are 15 years and older and still standing. Oh, forgot to mention MacBook Pro and iMac Mid 2009 still standing. Bose mini speaker. BUY LESS BUY BETTER!

  As someone who was a HGV mechanic for 10 years in a UK garage, every single person in the garage used either Snap-on or Mac tools, they have a lifetime warranty which we found to be no questions asked. They were expensive tools but, for what we used them for, totally worth it.

  For good american made tools that wont kill your budget your best bet is ebay. Most anything pre 1990 by SK, Craftsman, Proto and many others are made in usa and can be picked up without breaking the bank. If you can get NOS stuff its better then most tools available today. Ive even got older snap on stuff that still performs great.

  How are the mighty fallen

  I shop harder and read more reviews. My default for mechanics' tools is now Snap-On. I have a guy. \*grin\* One of the local franchise drivers will come when I call. Usually when I need something I just show up at one of his regular stops, but once in a while I coordinate a Saturday afternoon visit. I put out the word on Nextdoor and local groups on Reddit and Facebook. I give a food truck guy I know a heads up. I get a permit from the county (free) and let the local police know (some of whom show up for tools and food and community policing). It takes longer to explain than it does to set up. Once I got the local Boy Scout troop out for their auto maintenance merit badges. It's fun and free. Snap-On guy sells stuff. Food truck guy sells stuff. Local police think I'm the cool kid (they have nicknames for some of my difficult neighbors). Neighbors think I'm something special. Everyone wins.

  Hell yes!   Snap on ratchets, Knipex pliers, Wera screwdrivers, Bondhus Allen wrenches. That’s buy for life level.  USA made Craftsman was ok, but nowhere near that level.    Later Craftsman was just Harbor Freight level that tried to trade on the earlier generation’s reputation.

  I gotta disagree here for the most part. Hand tools built for tradesman are bifl. Matco, snap on, Knipex, wera, wiha, klein, vaughn, stiletto, ridgid (aluminum pipe wrenches are second to none). A 60+ year old screwdriver is inferior to wera screwdrivers in every possible way.

  What's the oldest item you still use daily that has withstood the test of time, and what's its story?

  Snap-On Pneumatic Ratchet…. I am the third owner, unsure when it was manufactured… it was given to me in 2005 by a coworker…. I use it daily at work as an automotive technician… Since I have owned it I have only had it rebuilt once in 2006.
