  Looking for a BIFL multi-tool

  You could not go wrong with a Leatherman Arc or Free P4. Outside of those specific models, I'm of the opinion that there are better options not made by Leatherman. The SOG PowerAccess for full-size and the PowerPint for a smaller more compact size are probably my favorite no brainer options. I'm also a fan of the Roxon multi tool because you can customize it to hold whatever implements you want, though that's a bit newer so the "buy it for life" aspect could be up in the air. It may be difficult for you to figure out exactly what implements your husband would want so it may be difficult not spoiling the surprise. It is also a cheaper option so there is more wiggle room with just buying more than he could need to let him experiment, or even change the implements depending on if he's camping or at home.

  I will chime in on this. I have a 20 year old leatherman and it is sitting on the desk next to me. It has been through a lot. I've also used Gerbers and SOGs, but I tend to lose them more than break them. For his 10th birthday, I bought my son an EDC kit, and went with Gerber. But those three brands last forever.

  https://www.sogknives.com/poweraccess-assist-stone/ This is the current version of the one I have. Mine didn’t come with the fancy pouch but it’s 15 years old and is still going strong. The geared pliers jaw is amazing, and the way I can thumb flick out the blade with one hand and not have to open the tool up is the biggest plus.

  Agreed. Leatherman is fine, but SOG is the next level. Make sure you're getting something that can be taken apart, pieces swapped or moved around. That really makes it BIFL.

  Most of the Leathermans will be a great buy, the hardest part is which one, and how big. I personally went through the Leatherman phase, the Gerber phase and landed on SOG tools. Mine was a larger heavy on that I wore daily on my job as a video tech, the best part was that I could open the knife blade one handed and without fully opening the pliers to get to it. Also compare warranties, and availability of parts. I don’t’t know about the others, but SOG sells parts right on their site, and they are easily repaired and tools swapped out. I dropped mine into a leaf pile that was later burned, and i found it while it was still too hot to pickup. The internal spacer was plastic, and had melted, but the whole thing still functioned. I sent it in for the rebuild/repair service, and they determined that the “heat treatment” that it received in the burn pile compromised the metal enough that they determined it was no longer fit for use so sent me a new one.

  It has held everything from standard water bottles to coffee cups, Yeti's, soup cans, 30 round magazines for my M4 when in the Army, a small fire starting kit, and extra tourniquets and first aid supplies. The elastic is a little loose now but there's no signs of fraying or tearing. If I still had it in constant use, I'd still trust it to hold my water bottle without a second thought.

  Recommended multitool

  I’ve owned my SOG Powerlock for almost 25 years. Ive customized it over the years by purchasing replacement parts and have rebuilt it twice. Its butterfly-action comes in handy when you’re holding onto something with your other hand and still need to use it. I can’t recommend them enough and they’re often never mentioned in these kinds of discussions for reasons that I’ll never understand. To me they are the superior multitool available on the market.

  Interested in niche daily products

  I love flipping my SOG powerpint around. Something about the geared folding mechanism they used is a lot of fun to mess with. The Gerber Dime has a satisfying snappy action to it

  SOG. I love my twitch II XL in black TiNi. The black hasn’t come off the blade. Got it around 2006 and I still use it!

  BIFL: tactical knife under $50?

  SOG makes some nice fixed blade knives in your budget. It's also hard to go wrong with a CRKT m16-14. When you're stabbing repeatedly, it's easy for the lock to fail or for your hand to slip on the handle and slip toward the blade. The dual flippers act as a guard against your hand sliding up the blade on these models. The auto-lawks system is superior to most tang locks too. The zytel scales keep a good grip even when covered in thick arterial spurts. The half serrated variety is good for sawing through the xiphoid process to get a good stroke in on the descending aorta. Truly a gentleman's knife.

My experience with it was stellar, but I never had a purpose for it so I sold mine. They make some cool bushcraft ones (linked) but their specialty is boot knives. Overall I wouldn't worry too much about it, I'm a grunt and I've had tons of knives and multitools. A few such as the twitch passed the test of time, but far more often I had (foldeing) knives wear out due to grit, and so on. In the army I've been given and issued tons of knives, it's always nice getting a new one; they're not expected to be bifl.
