I never want to buy cookware again
For skillets check out Solidteknics from Australia - lighter weight version of cast iron pan, built to last forever and reasonably non-stick when seasoned properly and a bit of oil added. On a budget just get a lodge pan from a second hand store and restore it, or buy one from Kmart or Walmart. For saucepans I've had cuisnart from costco for 20 years - stainless steel with lids. Whatever you buy, make sure the bottom is thick so it doesn't warp. I also have a Staub dutch oven that has lasted more than 30 years, but you can get a lodge version for much less and it does the same thing and can be used camping. If you check thrift stores regularly stuff will come up that is very durable, can also check eBay but shipping might kill any savings.

What’s the BIFL item that you love but everyone around you thinks is ridiculous?
I got a mineral B carbon steel skillet and one of the wife’s clear Caphalon lids fits it perfectly. We also have a SolidTeknics pan that another of the Caphalon lids fits perfectly.

Which type of pan is the BIFL king?
If you’re talking frying pans. Solidteknics. Made out of one piece of wrought iron. Half the weight of cast iron but with most of the benefits. And a multi century warranty. The surface needs seasoning but then you have an ever lasting non stick surface you can replenish any time. If you were in the UK you could get one from my shop as it’s got a crazy sale in til midnight. But you’re most likely in the USA.

What are some actual BIFL kitchen items?
- SolidTeknics cast iron frypans, we have 3 sizes (looks like they’re introducing a polished one too!) - Cuitisan stainless steel storage containers (microwave, oven, freezer and dishwasher safe) which I LOVE. I use them to marinate chicken, then freeze, then defrost and either decant into the Instant Pot or do “pot in pot” cooking with them. - this one I’m crazy for, it seems like a small thing but man do I love them! “Vogue stainless steel serving spoon 280mm length! I don’t know how but I bought a few on eBay for less than AUD$3 each and they still seem to be that cheap. - Vintage Fowlers Vacola preserving jars no. 36 that I inherited from my Grandad (who actually used them on high rotation for preserving). But I use them a lot just for pantry storage! You can get plastic snap on lids (which I anticipate won’t be BIFL) to use instead of the canning lids. I’ll also use them to preserve food at some point when my ADHD feels like it. - honestly now: Moccona coffee glass jars. Those bitches are work horses! Most of our pantry storage is in these jars, just takes a minute to drink the coffee first. It’s a slow and steady. - Temuka pottery bakeware. Look, pottery and stoneware ain’t BIFL cause temperature changes or moments of clumsiness break shit. But the dishes I have are vintage from the 70s and I use them weekly. - acacia wood cooking spoons. These aren’t gonna be BIFL either, but I love to cook with wooden spoons and these are more hygienic and last longer. Best of luck with the new kitchen stuff!

What frying pans are we buying? Tired of nonstick pans that only last 6 months.
Cast iron is nice but Wrought iron is half the weight and just as good. If you don't want iron, I'd go Non-nickel stainless steel. My preferred brand for both is Solidteknics. Made in Australia, which is great if you're avoiding American products as much of the world is.

What’s the pan everyone needs that’s BIFL?
SOLIDteknics wrought iron pans. It's stamped out of a single piece of metal, so no rivets or handles that can get loose. Endlessly renewable, nonstick (with proper seasoning). Multi-century warranty. More durable and lighter than cast iron. Stovetop, induction, oven or even the fire pit. Our favorite pans are the 11" deep skillet with the flat pan/skillet lid. It lives on the stove top. My second fav is the Bigga pan. Check out their websites Solidteknics or on Kickstarter. See the comments left by prior Kickstarter backers. Not cheap, but you really get what you pay for! They also have no nickel (Ni) stainless line called NöNi. They started as an Australian company and expanded to a Chicago, USA factory w US iron. The US factory is no longer producing, but the US store carries Australian made pans (AUS-ION), and occasionally has a few discounted lightly scratched or unboxed pans.

- Solidteknics carbon steel workhorse pan: I got a particular kickstarter campaign where it was a little lighter than their normal ones - Lodge cast iron pan: I got this one before the carbon steel pan and I don’t have the heart to give it away. Main downside is the weight but I have yet to see something I prefer cooking in this over the carbon steel - All-clad stainless steel saucepan - Le Creuset enameled cast iron pot - Cheap Korean dolsot pot Each one has served me really well and I got each incrementally to fill a particular need. I’ve had all of them for several years and I expect to last decades
