  Oral B vs Philips Sonicare - is the rounded electric toothbrush head better for you compared to the non-rounded?

  I've used Sonicare for 20 years & I've only replaced it once. & not even because it broke... The squishy thing on the button fell off. (The trick is to not charge them until the battery starts to blink, then only charge it for 8 hours, rinse & repeat) Have you tried that with yours? I wonder if that could improve your oral b's life expectancy~

  Toothbrush with cleanable (sanitized?) charging case or cover

  I have [this one](https://a.co/d/3vOKmgb) for my Sonicare toothbrush! Phillips no longer sells it (from what I can tell) so I'm not sure if that's because it just didn't sell well as what it is for the price, or if it's because the UV sanitization is more of a gimmick that doesn't do much. Either way, though, you store the heads in an enclosed area while the handle charges to the side, so even if the sanitization is not super effective, it should do what you need.

  Quip has worked well for me for travel, slim and compact. The neck is also thin enough for a UV brush head case to clip on to sanitize it and protect it while traveling. But it was annoying to have to keep track of a second toothbrush, so now I just bring my Sonicare even though it’s a bit bulkier.

  Best Electric Toothbrush Recommendations?

  I personally use sonicare toothbrush and I couldn’t be happier. I used to use a battery powered Oral-B and it was okay. Since switching I’ve found not just my teeth but especially my gums are much happier. Even my hygienist commented on how much better my teeth and gums looked. It would definitely be my first choice and I don’t think I’ll ever use anything else.

  Sonicare vs OralB - which one is worth the money?

  HX9368/35 (Sonicare Diamond Clean), purchased 2018. 2020 I was concerned about the seal flaws, so I purchased a new designed seal from eBay, a UK seller. Fitted it. Haven't had any issues. I open it yearly to inspect internals for any corrosion. 2025(December) the "white" LED is dimmer than the others. But I've never used the other modes honestly, only ever used the "Clean" mode. I never kept it on constant charge, only when the battery indicator shows amber, then I place on charge.

  Been using a basic Sonicare for like 4 years now and it's been solid. The battery thing is legit - still goes forever between charges. I tried the Oral-B at my dentist's office and it felt way more aggressive, almost like it was gonna strip my enamel off lol For what you want I'd just get the cheapest Sonicare model, the expensive ones mostly add timers and pressure sensors that you honestly don't need

  I had my original Sonicare diamondclean for over 10 years before I had to replace it. Definitely recommended!! My parents bought a cheaper Sonicare and needed to replace more often. I think the Diamondclean is pretty close to BIFL.

  Both options are great. The Sonicare is a bit more expensive if you use original heads, but I prefer it personally. The Oral-B has a wide variety of toothbrushes, but I would avoid all the smart features. In terms of longevity, my Sonicare is about 2.5 years old. Battery still lasts a month between charges.

  Another fan of Sonicare. I started using one in 2001. The unit lasted until around 2009. That unit lasted until around 2016-2017. My husband and I just switched heads daily until my daughter wanted one so we bought the two pack at Costco and I have been using that newest one since 2021 (the motor on my unit has gotten really loud though so I am wondering how much longer it is going to last. I don’t think it really matters which brand you get though.

  Store/off brand groceries. They’re cheaper and many variations either taste zero difference or taste better than brand to me from potato chips to cookies to cooking ingredients. Electric toothbrushes, I’ve used from expensive to cheap and prefer the cheap $20 Sonicare ones to their $100+ ones.

  Sonicare with the S Sensitive brush heads is a nice combo of extra soft brushes and travel. Unsure what you have, but with 2x daily use, have found that I only need to charge it once a month which is nice for travel.

  I recently bought a cheap Spin brush at Walmart. Liked it but it was also lacking in some ways. I watched some YouTube reviews that compared the products from Sonicare vs OralB. I chose the Sonicare 4100, which is second from the bottom end model. The Sonicare just had some features that sounded more to my liking. I think the decision maker for me was USB charging vs a proprietary charger. I've only been using it about a week.

  I’ve had my sonicare brush for 5 years. I’m not so great at maintaining my mouth but the gum care mode on the brush has improved my bleeding gums significantly over the lifetime of this brush. Yeah, the brush heads are spendy but we only get this set of teeth for the rest of our lives, so you just have to decide you’re worth the investment.

  Is it worth paying more for the high-end Sonicares, or are the basic ones just as effective?

  I love the deep clean mode they have on the 9300 models and above. That said, the 7500 series has the same deep clean but they only trigger it for the last 30 seconds of a 2 minute brush cycle, it's literally a paywall. For that reason, I do really like the DiamondClean series, but heavy asterisk!

  I went with Sonicare because of a sale. Only had for a month so can’t speak to long term quality, yet. But if it died I’d pick up another one or oral B immediately. Teeth are exponentially cleaner. I’ve used a Waterpick for 2 years and it is a massive QOL too!!***

  Geez, how often do you have to charge that? I’ve had my sonicare since September 2015, it still holds a charge for a few months of daily use. I don’t have to keep wires out, or even convenient. Obviously I can’t speak to the newer models others have had issues with. I can tell you that the sonicare air flosser is useless garbage.

  Sonicare. My dentist could tell when I got one. My teeth were in good shape before, but the hygienist barely spent any time on them after that. Third party heads seem to work fine. Teeth are something you want to keep for life without having to buy them, a sonicare is a pretty inexpensive investment. A waterpic is another good one. Not a substitute for flossing, but really helps a lot. Also you can get a sinus adapter for it if you have allergies or other sinus issues to rinse sinuses out.

  after decades of oral-b i switched to sonicare and never looked back. my teeth never felt that clean and my dentist noticed. i tell people so much about it they should pay me. - the sensors are a teaching tool. pay attention the first few times, then you know. no need to go fancier, once you figured out the pressure you're good. - sonicare has a plethora of brushes including third party. it's never rough, no gentle mode needed. - runs forever. i charge mine like once a month. different models have different milage. - i think it was $70ish on the evil rainforest empire. it also has a nifty carrying case and USB charging as well as a small footprint (i travel a lot).

  I have a Sonicare from before the company was sold to Philips and it still works - it’s now in my spare bathroom. I don’t remember the year I bought it but it was before I temporarily moved to the UK so it was \*definitely\* before **1996**. I remember coming back from the UK after three years and my NY dentist was amazed that I never saw a dentist while I was away! I did buy a new one about a decade ago and that is rolling steady. I really liked the built-in UV light in the “new” one.

  There are studies that show that oscillating electric toothbrushes (oral B and sonicare) slightly outperform old fashioned toothbrushes but not by much. The thing that I like about the electric ones is that they time out two minutes for you. As long as you’re brushing along the gum line for two minutes with any sort of toothbrush, fluoride toothpaste and floss you should be able to clean sufficiently!

  Agree, but if someone is like me (ie has some tylenol induced 'tism) and finds the rotating heads too intense, something like Sonicare is better than a regular brush and a regular brush is way way better than nothing. I still use my OralB one, though not daily and I had to really search for a small, very soft head for it. Otherwise it feels like I'm drilling my head off, especially where it gets cramped at the back of my mouth. No matter how much I try I can't get used to the vibrations in my ears. I try compensate by brushing every tooth in every angle I can.

  A nice electric toothbrush is definitely worth it. Decided to splurge at costco and got my partner and I the best sonicare they had. It cleans so much better than my old brush. 100% worth every penny.

  As a 50+ year old get a SoniCare or similar high-quality electric toothbrush and a waterpik, it will improve your oral health a great deal. The dentist visits are nearly perfunctory at this point as I have "a great set of teeth" even though two of them are implants and I had a mountain of orthodontia as a kid.

  While Sonicare has its own problems (overpriced brush heads, possible decline in durability, inability to replace battery), when I switched from a cheap mechanical-rotation electric toothbrush to a Sonicare, the dentist and hygienist both commented at my next checkup "it's great that you finally started flossing, your gums look so healthy!" Spoiler: I still don't floss. Even if they only last a few years, a lifetime of buying *good* electric toothbrushes (teethbrush?) is cheaper than tooth repairs.

  Honestly, I went for the top of the line DiamondClean. I thought the app might be useful. What a waste of money. The app itself has to be open for it to actually track your brushing information - otherwise it just keeps track of the fact that you did brush. The brush head tracking which keeps track of how much time you spend on each area of your mouth rarely tracks correctly. The only thing they want you to pay the extra money for is to tell you your brush head needs replacing (you can figure that out by looking at the brush) and try to suck you into purchasing replacements from them at a rediculous price. The top of the line is a complete rip off. You’ll be fine without the app.

  • A crossbody case for my phone. I literally drop my phone all the time and having it hang over my neck or shoulder is so cool because even when it slips from my hands, it doesn’t fall, it just hangs lol. • An ESR Case for my iPad. You can literally have the iPad sitting higher than it does - no more neck craning, I love watching things now and I can read/type effortlessly. • Charging dock - I used to always forget to charge my stuff so having a dock for everything means I don’t have to remember every single device, I plop everything there from the getgo. • Sonicare toothbrush - used to have to brush my teeth so carefully and panic about how long I do but now it’s an easy timed and vigorously clean experience. Dentist gave me praise for it too. • Wifi-controlled bulb, control it through the app or my voice assistant— no more getting up to do it! • LOOP EARPLUGS. My lord I was living in constant auditory overstimulation and used to struggle so much with people making noisy public phone calls or shrieking children at parks. Now I can sleep anywhere and anytime, or just read my book.

  I’m not sure about oral-b, but every time my Sonicare motor has crapped out I’ve filled a warranty claim with them and had a brand new at my front door within a few days. I was impressed and shocked at how easy it was to get it replaced lol.

  Honorable, sure. My 30 year old sonic care brush just had it's first layer for the power button rub off. Still works like a champ. I have no idea what you did to wreck yours. That looks awful.

  Deep cleaning. Gets all of that built-up plaque below the gum line from years of neglect. Not fun but necessary. Your future self will thank you. Not only for dental health and appearance - gum disease is by far the most common source of chronic inflammation which affects your whole body to include, for example, coronary artery disease. Then get a Sonicare and start flossing daily before bedtime. I did exactly this about 25 years ago and completely turned around my dental health.

  his and hers water pik combos so it comes with the travel version. get several dozen gal. size of blue listerine to run through the water piks every night. his and hers of the fancy sonicare toothbrush with the charding glass cup. maybe a year or more of heads for the sonicares. send away for the good sensodyne with the special secret ingredient that rebuilds plaque that you can't get on the shelf here in the US spring for a supply of the good floss. the one i am talking about is glide. get a decent supply of the single use soft picks to keep in the car, the office, your purse etc. did i miss anything?

  If you look at any reviews where they get technical and measure cleanliness and whatnot, then the good Sonicare and Oral B brushes aren't really much better than the other. It's ultimately down to preferance. I've been Sonicare for over a decade, I really, really like it.

  I think the top 2 are Sonicare and Oral-B. The main difference between them is how the head moves. Oral-B has a rotating/spinning motion while the Sonicare has a vibration/back-and-forth motion. I have heard that the smaller head of the Oral-B is better for hard to reach areas? Makes sense, but I don't know if that is that much different than the Sonicare. I personally went with Sonicare and I have not regretted it. My brother praises his Oral-B. In the end, the best toothbrush is the one you will actually use.

  The battery on the the sonicare lasts FOREVER so for trips less than a month you can just throw the pieces in a plastic bag and not worry about charging. Personally I just buy the GUM folding non electric toothbrushes for travel though. one less thing to worry about.

  The second study is almost 20 years old at this point and both technologies have come a long way. They now are more or less the same, with the Oral B able to reach the back teeth easier while the vibration of the Sonicare marginally better at cleaning gums, which is rendered inert if you also use a water flosser.

  Sonicare vs OralB - which one is worth the money?

  I have had 5 sonicares over 15 years. 2010-2016: I got a twin pack for Christmas. I gave one away. The other one still worked but I wanted to upgrade at the end of 2016. 6100. 2016-2024: it stopped charging. 9000. 2024: It still works but I wanted to upgrade so now it’s a travel brush. 4100 2025: I just got the 9900. A few tips: Don’t leave it submerged in water for too long. I have read that the screws in the handle become loose if you regularly tap the handle against the sink to get the water off.

  Probably Sonicare My first one lasted about 10 years before I dropped it in the sink and broke it. Bought another to replace it. Also bought a travel case to go with it. The battery lasts a long time, like at least a month, so traveling with it is easy.

  I had a Quip for a bit and hated it, plus I remember hearing something about how the vibrations are purely meant to be a timer and it does nothing to aid cleaning. My old lady and I bought matching Sonicares and mine bit the dust after about a year but hers is still going strong after 3. She really likes hers. Since then I’ve just gone with the freebie manual I get from my dentist every 6 months. Best of luck on your journey.

  I forgot - also, I chipped a tooth using a cheaper Oral B because of the pressure. Literally chipped a front tooth when the plastic versus brush hit it. I think the Sonicare is just safer for daydreamers.

  All I know is that I had cavities with Oral B and no cavities with Sonicare- I think because the Sonicare is more dummy proof for people not great with brushing. I just find it easier to use their larger brush heads. I like the gentle mode best.

  Anyone tried a 2-in-1 electric toothbrush with water flosser?

  I have this. It kinda sucks at both jobs. The tooth brushing part is stiff and isn't very cushioned, plus the part where the water jet thing sticks out, it's prominent and bumps against teeth while brushing. The water flosser has one setting only as is weak sauce with a small capacity. I would just get something like a Sonicaee basic toothbrush (or equivalent) that has a pressure sensor, and a travel-sized pop out water flosser that collapses smaller when packed away. Both will do their job well. Combining them is a cool idea but really not that great.

  Dentist here: Here’s the simple playbook for great oral health that I tell all of my patients. To avoid cavities and maintain healthy bones and gums: 1. Brush with an electric toothbrush twice daily 2. Floss at least once per day, but ALWAYS before you brush at night. 3. Visit your dentist for routine cleanings (twice per year is usually plenty for those with healthy mouths) 4. Be mindful of sugar intake - the more time that sugar and acid stay on the teeth the more damage that occurs. 5. No food or drink, except for water, after evening routine Any electric toothbrush that plugs into the wall for charging is great. Just like with toothpaste, there is a lot of marketing to entice buyers. OralB and Sonicare are the most trusted brands. These brushes are efficient, powerful, and VERY WORTH IT! Most bells and whistles are unnecessary, though a pressure sensor is a great feature to ensure you don’t irritate gums and root surfaces. There are great options for $30-40. I tell my patients that I don’t care what brand they use or where they get it. as long as they are using an electric brush. ***We know it’s boring, but it matters…only floss the teeth you want to keep!

  Agree. I've had the same Soniccare for 15+ years and my dentist has been pleased ever since I've been using it. One tip: buy off-brand brushes (< $1/head) and change them monthly...much better results than using a worn out brush.

  I’m a dentist. Both are very good. Use whichever one you like more. I use a Sonicare, my wife uses an Oral-B. Just make sure you replace the heads regularly since they wear out and the bristles fray and get soft (around every 4 months for the average person).

  I’ve been using Sonicare toothbrushes for over 20 years and have never had one die, fall apart, or have button problems. I recently bought a new one not because the old one died, but because I wanted to upgrade and there was a great deal at Costco. The old one worked fine, but was starting to discolor at the base after 10 years of sitting on the charging stand. Picked black this time to avoid that.

  Upvote for Sonicare. My dentist comments to me every time I’m there “you have a Sonicare don’t you?” And always says how they are the best for your teeth and gums. I have a middle of the pack one now (cost about $100) but I can’t imagine the $30-$50 ones function much differently or even the $300 ones for that matter. Yes heads are more expensive, but for me they work far better than manual or even the cheap electric ones (quip and what not). Brush 2xs a day rarely floss, and haven’t had a cavity or any issues in 15-20 years… (before having a Sonicare).

  We killed ours in 3 years. Just buy it from Costco, and take it back if it dies. In 12 years, we have had 4. They are still the best because they clean between the teeth with the vibrations. You should actually be flossing first, then brushing with a Sonicare.

  I've had a Sonicare for a very, very long time. Ended up buying a new one after the battery crapped out and on the newer, skinny models with the articulating head (which might just be standard now?) the articulating head broke within a month or two. Sonicare replaced it outright, but my girlfriend's had the same issue. They work really well otherwise and I feel like all products that go through transformational phases will have some kinks, but just be aware of their warranty in case you do have a problem.

Therefore I can also take it traveling. Going on strong. It is NOT the most premium sonic clean. Those things feel different. I say close enough. The built in battery is bs.

  Both sonicare and oral-b do better than manual brushing (according to tests), the difference between them is the kind of motion they use and you will likely prefer one over the other (sonicare vibrates, oral-b rotates, they feel different but both clean your teeth). The basic functions within each line are the same, more money buys you features you might or might not care about but the more expensive models don’t necessarily clean any better.

  Branding literally doesn’t matter anymore here. The internal tech is so accessible now that they all use the same basic stuff, that’s why electric toothbrushes have gotten so cheap over the years. The only product differentiation is now in hyperspecific features and shit like LED lights etc etc. obviously build materials also matter in terms of durability so with that I wouldn’t really recc going below 50 dollars for the whole set up cos then its a scam teehee. Gonna drop a few here, there’s the sonicare series, oral B has really good models, Suri’s had a couple issues but its the only model that accepts repairs, there’s also my Smile (a little nicher so [linking it here](https://recommendedstuff.com/dp-B09SHMDBQRFSA)). Out of these, top 2 would be oral B and My smile, just all rounders in terms of durability. Preferring the my smile a little bit more for the accuracy of the timer (the oral B one is a little hit or miss sometimes). Both have got a couple of different modes for brushing, depending on what you need. You don’t need any sort of “whitening” mode, its a marketing gimmick but the ones for deep cleaning and slow brushing are really useful.

  Any electric is going to be light-years better than manual. I lean towards the cheaper end of the spectrum - I don't need all the bells and whistles, or an app (seriously?) for a toothbrush. Mine is an Oral B, but I've had a Sonicare in the past that was also good. I doubt you could go wrong with either brand. They don't make mine anymore, and I've just realized, they stopped making the replacement heads for it too. I don't trust the generic heads to do as good a job or last as long, so I might be shopping for a new one, too, soon. lol (It's fine - I've had this one for like 15 years. Mine runs one a AA, though - there's no way a rechargeable would last nearly that long.)

  Ya I got sonicaire like 5 years ago. It still cleans and feels the same. The heads are a little expensive for replacing. But I mean so are electric toothbrushes in general .  Comes with a case, has caps to cover the brush. It vibrates differently to tell you to brush a different part of your mouth. Breaks your mouth into 4 quadrants over the 2 minutes. Charge about once every 2 to 3 weeks like everyone else said. Build quality is really nice, it feels hefty and metal, not like the oral b plasticky ones.

  I have used a sonicare or oral-b for about 15-20 years. I had more than a dozen cavities get filled until I started using an electric toothbrush. My dentist said I am prone to cavities because I have thick saliva. Since I have started using one I am not sure if I have had more than one cavity. I would recommend one for anyone. Any name brand electric toothbrush will probably last 5-15 years. I have only bought 2 and both still work, but I’d be hard pressed to call either BIFL. But I’d say switching to an electric toothbrush would be you buying something to keep your real teeth for life.

  I love my sonicare, but it's not been a BIFL purchase. Some died young (and if it's within a year you can get it replaced by Phillips), some lasted over 5 years. None have lasted 10 years yet. I've had the cheapest and the expensive models, and there doesn't seem to be any difference in longevity. I don't know if it's the shaking which does it in, or manufacturing.

  Also here for the Sonicare. I've been using them for over 20 years now. Have had them crap out twice and both times Phillips replaced them under warranty and it was super easy, just a phone call. Last time I got one I got a 2 pack from Costco on sale so one lives in my travel stuff and the other is my daily driver. I also just pick up the brush heads in the economy pack at Costco when they are on sale which happens a few times a year. Dentists consistently compliment me on my teeth. +1 one to the other commenters saying this is the best thing you can do for your mouth.

  I’ve been using Sonicare for about 12 years and I love it. I have had 3 different models in those 12 years. The first and second models lasted me about 6 years each and I got a new one for last Xmas.  When I was researching to buy the latest one, I read somewhere that all the testing for effectiveness and marketing is done with the basic “clean” mode, which I believe all models have. So I concluded any model would do so it all depended on what other features I wanted. I ended up getting DiamondClean 9000 because it was on sale at Costco and came in a two pack. One thing that I have come across in my research is that Sonicare quality has gone down a lot and that the toothbrushes don’t last as long as they used to (the pulsing weakens over time).

  Get a sonicare, the cleaning really feels far superior to the oral B. Be sure to remove the head and wash thoroughly as the rubber seal that connects the head stub to the body can rot and allow water in.

  Sonicare is a whole other level of cleaning...! Also, only charge the battery when it is empty (I charge every 2-3 weeks overnight).

  Best first Phillips Sonicare toothbrush

  My first Sonicare toothbrush was their base version that sold for $78 at Target. This was in 2002 when there was on a few versions. The replacement head was some screw in type. That toothbrush handle lasted me 9 yrs. Nowadays, they definitely don’t last as long. I’d be lucky to get 3 yrs till the internal connector piece to the toothbrush head fails. You can YouTube how to “fix” them, but you’ll also see why it’s a terrible mechanical design.

  Since 2001 I am on my fourth Sonicare and honestly on the fourth because in 2020 I got a Sonicare for my daughter and they were on sale at Costco. My first one lasted a good 7-8 years, the second about 10 years (shared base unit with my husband), and then the third one is about 8-9 years old. My husband is still using the third one. My current one is okay but it starting to not hold it’s charge as long and it is really loud. When it dies if Sonicare #3 is still working I will just go back to using that base until I dies and then we will either buy another two at Costco or another single one and keep sharing.

  Sonicare no longer BIFL?

  They're made to fail now. I went through 3 within warranty period (which in their defense is terrific and no questions asked basically) before I attempted to just fix the third when it failed. They are repairable though. The problem you describe is that the metal shaft that your toothbrush head fits onto has become loose from the internal vibrating mechanism. This is simply a single screw that needs to be tightened. For a while Philips had designed this to be intentionally unrepairable but fortunately, they have seemed to go back to their repairable design now. In my mind this entire malfunction (which pretty much every sonicare toothbrush is destined to eventually experience IMO) could have easily been avoided if they just hit this screw with a bit of Loctite. That said it's still a great toothbrush and it's an easy fix. you should find a video describing the process online. I actually just had to fix mine again yesterday after about another year of no issues (went with red loctite this time so hopefully this is the last time I'll have to fix it.) If you do open it up and repair hit the bottom cap with some silicone adhesive to re-seal everything when you reassemble.

  Many of the new Sonicares have a "pressure guard" feature that does what you're describing on purpose if you push too hard. If it does it all the time it is likely a broken link between the motor and the brush head, which seems to be one of the two main failure modes (the other being batteries). I've taken these apart and the mechanism is quite fiddly and non-repairable. I love Sonicare but they've never been BIFL IMO. They have a rather generous 2-year warranty and are very good about honoring it. The cost of a new one is worth the 2-3 years of service (though the replacement heads are pricey), leaving the e-waste as the only real regret - I tell myself I'm saving the landfill from future tubes of denture glue.

  Oral B vs Philips Sonicare - is the rounded electric toothbrush head better for you compared to the non-rounded?

  I have an Oral B that I converted to clean my hardscape in my aquariums. Used it for years fully submerged, literally unkillable, it's like 10 years old. Plus the Oral B i have now is at least 3 yeas old. Picked up a Sonic care on sale to try it out, switch it up. I don't like the vibrating holding it but not a deal breaker. My mouth feels cleaner than the Oral B, I kind of like going back to the way I used to brush my teeth way back when.I will keep using it until the brush heads run out, which is 6 I believe, and then make a decision. I got it super cheap black Friday so all good. Don't forget to floss everyday!

  sonicare feels the cleanest, but I've been using my oral-b because it lasts.. I have been through 3 sonicares and not ready to take the plunge again until the braun dies. The head gets sloppy and wet but I've found if I rinse it while it's running and whip it it's better. If I got mold I'd take that as a sign to change the head. Some knockoff heads are more prone to this stuff.

  Sonicare is amazing because there’s no moving parts. My daughters Braun ones have some odd mechanism that makes the head spin and it’s always getting mold inside. They’ll go and we’ll get them Sonicare eventually. Just have to make sure to take the heads off and wash them and dry separately. Which is a pain.

  I bought a Sonicare DiamondClean 6 years ago and it's still going strong. I'm using the A3 heads now which I prefer to the older ones. The charger is in the base of a glass cup, seems gimmicky but it's one less thing to think about. The pressure sensor on it seems to be good, keeps you from pressing too hard which can be bad for you.

  Searching sonicare on eBay is a good start to see what is available. At first I was looking at their affordable options to compare against Amazon, but quickly saw that they had their expensive options in the same search. Just be prepared to pay for the replacement brushes and charging station since they don't come with one. Honestly I wouldn't mind getting a used one since brushes are the only one going in your mouth.

  I like Sonicare much more than Oral-B (quieter, just more nicely designed) but I had two die within three years or so and found their customer service to be pretty horrendous (ymmv if you’re not in Germany). Using an Oral-B now and we’ll see how long it lasts… so far so good after six months or so

  I have invisalign and use the kid's version of sonicare. I had the pricy one before and didn't notice any difference between the 2. I never used any of the extra features except the timer- which the kids version also has. I found that the pressure sensor wasn't necessary as you adjust easily from a regular toothbrush. FYI- don't brush your invialign, soak in retainer cleaning solution/tablets as brushing may damage them.

  Yeah my dentist kept telling me to get a sonicare. He sold them but said I could also get them on Amazon or wherever. He sold the basic one and said that’s all you need and his price was actually less than Amazon. I’ve been using it a couple years now and for what it costs it’s worth it.

  Loving my Sonicare One. Simple, svelte (travels easily), not too buzzy (I do a normal style brushing with it, so no different technique than a normal toothbrush, just a little lighter), has the quad timer, battery lasts over a month brushing twice daily, heads are a bit cheaper than standard Sonicare. My hygienist is happy with the results.

  What is a BIFL item/product you recommend?

  I have the briggs and Riley Baseline carryon, medium roller (getting the Large/XL means you will be over the 50lb domestic (US) weight limit), and a cabin 2-wheel underseat roller. Great bags, although the wife wanted Away (seem nice so far, but not my preference). Tom Bihn backpacks. Took a week long trip to the tropics and the bag is a little unorthodox but it can hold a lot of stuff. And you have a variety of fabrics to select. Bose over hear headphones - great for travel and mine have lasted for awhile. For life is somewhat limited but its an electronic item that has a little tech, its a tradeoff. Sonicare toothbrush - It is like 10 years old on the original battery. Teeth are life. Agree with the Leatherman Wave+, good tool doesn't really excel at any one thing, but useful to have. Cookware: DeBuyer carbon steel country fry pan. I prefer this over cast iron. Demeyere Atlantis Fry pan - great steel fry pan. Allclad copper core (functionally similar to the d3 but I like the appearance of the copper line that shows through and I don't worry about cleaning it). I have watches. Mechanical ones are nice but as the old joke goes if you have to pick a watch to wear for the rest of your life what would you choose and no you can't choose your g-shock. NiMH batteries - where possible get rid of alkaline even if they are cheaper. They will leak and ruin your day and maybe even the device they are in. I choose Eneloops, the normal not the pro variant. Skip the LION batteries for now as they are 3.7v and require a voltage regulator to go to 1.5v, but if you need the 1.5v instead of 1.2v for the device meaning the NiMH won't work then the normal 1.6v lithium batteries would work. High quality LED lights - CRI should be 90+. They are a long term consumable but higher quality light is better. Knipex and Klein for tools. Knipex makes my favorite generalist pliers/wrenches. Klien makes great hand tools, I prefer the MiUSA options and use their linesmans for random things. Klien also makes a bottle opener, Wera does too and they are somewhat comfortable to hold. Clothes that don't have spandex. Spandex and elastic fail. I have had Patagonia fleece for 30 years and it still works. Randolph sunglasses - I just like them. Ray Ban 4140, they have spring hinges which means I can wear my spouse's and they have had theirs for 15 years although I had to buy new aftermarket lenses. Also discovered a french brand Cartel that also uses spring hinges, but don't know enough about this brand. Miele Washer and Dryer - gets rid of the vent ducting behind and they are solid if a little quirky. They canister vacuum is great. Converted the in-laws to this brand and they just went from the upright to the canister.

  Which one is the :nicer one? I had my other one for years and it quit holding a charge. I had it more than a year and just stopped holding the charge. The new one kind of acts like that too. Maybe it is the outlet in the bathroom. DUH I am on social security and I take pretty good care of my teeth at age 76. They are all mine and I would like to keep them. I think the Sonicare toothbrush helped me do that. So I will try a different outlet to see if that works or Sonicare can send me a brand new one that works like the old one did.   I've had my soniccare for 3ish years now and there was a small learning curve to get used to the sensation. I think there was also a mode you could start on that eases you into it so it's not as intense. But 10/10 either way. You will get used to it and it's so much better. With that and a water pik my oral health has been excellent at every appointment. Pro tip on the water pik, get the portable one and do it in the shower. They make a MESS.

They sell them in doubles at Costco frequently if you have anyone to split it with. first one broke bc I think you need to be careful about removing the head and cleaning the top of the brush. Second one has lasted a number of years - I think at least four now - with regularly removing gunk from the mechanical part

  Second the Sonicare. I can't speak to the current gen product, but I have a ~10-year old DiamondClean model that's been well worth the investment. I had to repair it a couple of times when the head got skewed (tighten & loctite 1 screw) and the vibrations lost strength (restore the air gap between the magnet and motor) both thanks to detailed repair guides on Youtube. Only tricky part was opening it up the first time. And since I've had it open I know I'll be able to swap out the battery when that inevitably gives out on me.

  If you're considering one of the lesser known brands, I'd also consider availability and cost of replacement heads.  For myself I prefer sonicare as the heads are all one piece so they are easier to rinse than oral-b. They work great too, dentist is always happy with my maintenance :)

  Yeah, but they also have those stupid holes in them that collect sputum and crap. I can only imagine they're growing small colonies of bacteria in-between brushings. I choose the sonicare because it's easier to keep cleaner/drier, though I conceed it's a literal crapshoot if you store it in a bathroom.

  This is what I’ll do when my 25yo Sonicare dies. It actually still holds a charge well. I usually get through 2 or 3 days before I remember to put it back in the charger, and I’ve never seen it croak.

  I have a Sonicare from before the Phillips buyout, which would make it 25+ years old. It’s not only going strong, it’s way way better than the Phillips versions put out today. I’m not sure how much reputation the brand has anymore, but it ain’t what it was.

  My Sonicare worked almost twenty years before the battery stopped holding a charge. I bought a new battery from Grainger, took it apart, desoldered the old battery (special equipment, skills), soldered in the new one (special equipment, skills) and it's still going strong about four years later. Cost was about $3 and took me fifteen minutes. Brush heads still readily available. My wife uses Oral B. When the battery dies you can't get the plastic welded body apart. She gets eight to ten years out of them. She thinks my Sonicare costs too much.

  I had an oralb then I got a sonicare to alternate. Turns out I prefer the sonicare. It works really well and my gums feel great. Another bonus is that it last forever on a charge. When I go on trips I don’t need a charger.

  I’ve had oral-b and sonicare. Currently use and prefer the latter, and it’s also what my dentist recommends. Neither are a bad choice, but I didn’t like the small rotating head on oral-b. Dentist told me vibrating head is better for enamel and gums. It goes without saying that neither brand of for life. Eventually the battery will not hold a charge or the motor will burn out.

  I got a Sonicare One to try it out. My kids and my wife have the regular Sonicare basic brushes. The One is less vibratey than the regular ones, but I like it because it is smaller and more packable, the battery lasts way longer, and I just use it like a regular toothbrush (actually brushing + the vibrations). Just had my 1st cleaning since getting it (about 2 months on it now), and my hygienist was happy with the level of plaque on my teeth.

  Just to chime in with my sonicare experience: about 5 days before I notice its losing power. On a fresh charge it really buzzes. After about 5 days it needs charging even if it hasn’t completely lost power. These things are not designed to completely cycle. They’re meant to sit on the stand between uses and the batteries are spec’d for that. The manual for mine says to occasionally do a complete discharge, but normally to leave it on the stand. I don’t think any of them will perform any different: they’re at their best fresh off the charging station. It’s annoying if you don’t have a shaver socket, but I don’t think there’s anything you can really do.

  I bought my sonicare toothbrush almost a decade ago at this point. Only use knock off replacement heads. I remember the first time using it my teeth felt like I just got a dental cleaning. Thing has traveled with me to four different continents and still works as good as the first day I got it.

  I was an early adopter of the sonic care, it was great and my daily toothbrush for 9-10 years before it crapped. Replaced with a mid tier oral B electric and have been using that for \~2 years, held up great so far and much cheaper than the sonic care. I don’t expect it to last as long as the sonic care as the build quality doesn’t appear to be as good, but with the significant discount for the oral B, I’d be happy with either.

  I used to use the Oral-Bs too, and while they definitely do the job, the noise and that slightly aggressive feel can be a bit much. The Sonicare just feels smoother and quieter, which I appreciate, especially in the mornings. It’s funny how something as simple as a toothbrush can make such a difference in your routine

  Sonicare's are fairly user servicable to swap out the battery if/when needed. Mine is still going 5 years strong with no repairs, it goes back on the charger almost every night. Cleaning the space between the brush head and the handle tip every so often reduces wear on the motor (and is just gross to leave regardless).

  I bought a mid-tier Sonicare about 10 years ago, for around $30-$40. It’s still going strong and I have no plans to replace (except for the brush heads, of course). Seriously though, I get weeks of battery life out of each charge, the power level hasn’t decreased at all that I can tell, and my gums are way healthier. Would definitely recommend.

  I have an ancient Sonicare E with the screw-on heads that I literally have been using since 1998. I al says charge it after a single use so I don’t know how long the battery would last otherwise (and I never travel with it). But every time I think about replacing it I just buy another 8-pack of heads (1.5-2 year supply) for about half of what a new sonicare toothbrush costs. Who will give me odds on 30 years?

  Bought the latest and greatest sonicare to replace my $50 dollar one (just could afford to and was curious)…gang it is legitimately like 99% the same toothbrush with maybe a bit more premium parts, a nice sleek case and some app connectivity that shows where you’re brushing…absolute minor stuff, don’t overthink this one. Nice toothbrush but it is nearly the exact same in a lot of ways.

Our dentists don’t care other than they prefer electric over non electric. Usually the difference between the various models within those two brands are features that don’t matter that much.   I personally have a Sonicare. I’ve read about Siri and it seems like it’s more repairable which puts it higher on the BIFL scale, but the Sonicare has almost 2x vibrations. I’ve had my Sonicare for about 5 years, I think that makes it significantly more sustainable than a manual toothbrush, and I know it’s keeping my teeth clean. At the end of the day I want my teeth for life more than I want a toothbrush for life.
