What product category has gotten worse in quality, even at the premium level?
My 2010 45" Sony is still serving photons as well as it did when I bought it. I was upset that I had to pay $800 for a TV! I'll buy another Sony when this one is done.

People should search teardowns before they buy and find out whether the batteries are held on with screws, adhesive, or solder and how much stuff is in the way. I'm not a super tech-inclined person, but I can do a search and follow instructions. I've replaced batteries on Sony WH-1000XM and WF-1000XM line headphones/earbuds before. No solder, but the amount of glue they use is pretty obnoxious (supposedly the WH-1000XM6 battery is held on with screws now instead of glue, but I haven't done that one). All you need is to open the ifixit tutorial and to order a battery (or a cheap replacement kit if you don't have the other stuff).

Go with whoever gives you a proper multi year warranty right up front... the longer the cover for the actual panel the better because that's the bit that usually dies first TVs fail the same way whoever sells them, panels burn out and backlights cook themselves and once an edge lit array gets cooked unevenly you're basically stuck because you're not fixing that in your living room Check they send someone to your house because dragging a huge telly back to a shop is a joke Make sure they do dead pixel swaps without the whole silly argument over how many are acceptable this can drag on forever Richersounds usually throws in long warranties and John Lewis does on plenty of models too so it’s really just whichever gives the better cover on the one you want LG C series OLEDs and Sony midrange LEDs are fine as long as they’re under that extended policy otherwise you’re just rolling the dice

17 year old Sony Bravia as good as it was back then
I have Sony Bravia from 2004. I don't know how much it costed but all I know is that this TV was a gift for my grandmother for her promotion. I have a sis what very loves broke everything and by everything I mean EVERYTHING. One day she dropped that TV few times on her barbies with (I don't know why) sharp shoes. It is still in my house and I'm playing on it like nothing ever happened with him (except video on that TV is a little bit more yellow than on normal TVs

I love this! I found an old 2006ish Bravia last year thrifting and it’s awesome! It’s one of the first flat screens to come out and it’s such a cool tv. Came to Reddit to see what original remote it had but it’s a tank of a tv and has this really pretty glass border. It recently has had some fuzzy lines in the upper right corner from me setting my damp cardigan on it and hope I can fix that. Anyhow, I love these tvs.

So I actually went through something similar with constant headphone wear (also ADHD, also need the noise isolation basically 24/7). After burning through a few pairs, I started looking beyond just headphone reviews and found TravelGiftList while researching gear durability - they have these really thorough breakdowns of what actually holds up with heavy use vs what just sounds good on paper.From my own experience though, the Sony XM4s held up way better than expected with daily abuse. Going on 2.5 years now and only the ear pads needed replacing around 18 months in (like $20 on Amazon). The QC45s are solid too but I found the hinges felt flimsier when I tried them in store. One thing - sleeping in over-ears every night is brutal on any headphones, that might be what killed your JBLs so fast tbh.

Sony XMs, mine (XM5) get almost daily use. I used to baby them, wouldn't even walk in the rain, but I'm less cautious now tbh. I got em used for $300 1.5 years ago, have accidentally dropped them multiple times and don't bother with a case and they still look brand new. They also come with an aux cord, so if you forget to charge them, hi ADHD, you can still plug them. Absolutely worth the investment imo.

I’d avoid brand-new ultra cheap players, most break or skip fast. Good strategy is to get an older portable boombox (Sony or Panasonic) or a used Discman with anti-skip. You get solid playback and built-in speakers without the junk reviews and for a good price on FB market or Ebay.

Sony and Bose. I was shocked at how much better life was after upgrading. Microsoft, Logitech, gamer this and that - all had flaws and zero durability. Disposable. I use Sony for work and Bose for gaming at home. Better connectivity and ANC. And there is no comparison for sound quality. I’m happy to report they’ve just turned 4 this November, doubling my usual headphone lifespan.

i'm on my second pair of xm4's, one i had for about three years and still functions, but got a second pair because the first was starting to sound a little tinny due to playing at high volume for pretty much the entire time i've had them. replacement cushions are super easy to find too (sony ones are expensive, wicked cushions are pretty great though). the original pair still technically works fine, other than the high pitched noise on one side. most comfortable pair i have other than dt 770s and koss porta pros. idk how hard people are handling/using their headphones though, i just use mine on breaks at work (just throwing into my work bag when not using them), or at home. i've never slept with earphones or headphones on though.

Obviously repairability is a huge factor if something is even enduring 10-20 years so consider this: https://www.ifixit.com/repairability/wireless-earbud-repairability-scores Personally I have the Jabras now. I‘m happy with them for the past 3 years, but they are ok-ish middle class headphones. In the future I guess I would go for the Sonys for sound quality reasons or the Fairphone ones for bifl reasons.

Just wanted to throw this out there, I had the exact same issue with my Razer headset dying after heavy daily use. Ended up going with the Sony WH-1000XM5 after reading Screened.com's breakdown on durability. The mic quality surprised me for calls and the battery actually lasts through my longest work days. Only heads up is they're not specifically gaming branded, but honestly they handle Discord and everything else perfectly fine.

My XM4 lasted like 8.5 hours when new. The AirPods Pro 2 lasted about 5 hours new. That said i significantly prefer the fit and ANC on the AirPods. But the battery is hugely better on the Sony

Sony WH-1000XM6 or Bose Quietcomfort Ultra Gen 2
The ANC is so much more effective on the Sony's. I fly a lot and the Bose just can't block out the nose anything like the Sony's do. The Bose are also a bit wooly compared to the Sony's, they just don't have the clarity and range I want. I also hate the Bose app. I have to sign in everytime I want to use them and it never remembers my login details. Sometimes it forgets it has paired and asks me to set up a new product. It never gets the battery level right. Just about the only thing I like is the 'aware' mode. I can sit in my office and have music on but still know what's going on around me.

Sony WF1000XM3, the only wireless earbuds to last me over a year, now owned for 5 years.
Perhaps Ive just had bad luck. I was using them in a factory environment for over 6 hours a day, 5 days a week, including the WF1000xm3, theyre the only ones that havent failed. I assume shitty solder and bad batteries were prone to the hot environment Im usually in, though when I look online many people have had their buds fail as well. Especially the sony linkbuds with the notorious battery failure

Sony WF1000XM3, the only wireless earbuds to last me over a year, now owned for 5 years.
I had my m3 for six years about two months ago I sent them through the washing machine. They work still but the left one stopped charging and the right one I have to baby sit to get it to charge but used them for 8+ hours a day for that whole time at work. I dropped dozens of times on concrete they were fantastic. Upgraded to the new m5 they are good but the control surface is not intuitive hard to adjust them in ear without pausing and listening with one when you switch to the other earbud it won't connect automatically and have to open the app. Things the m3 did well 2 gens later doesn't do.

Yeah I had these and fucking hated them tbh, always losing connection, mediocre battery life, not charging in the case, etc. Had them only for a year before I couldn’t stand them anymore. Liked the XM4s much better; love the XM5s I have now, minimal connection issues, have had them the longest at 3 years so far with no plans to replace anytime soon.

I have the same, also, in their 5th year. Although the battery in my case kind of died a few months back, I thought I would need to replace them, but I ended up finding an ifixit guide and replace the batteries instead. It wasn't super easy, because it involved soldering, but I managed to do it, and I am super happy, I didn't have to throw them out.

I have the xm3's and Bose. I gave the Sony's to my wife because she needed something for college and after lots of research and hesitation I bought the Bose to replace them. BIG mistake! I hate them. In comparison, musically and ANC, the Sony's are far superior. I bought the AZLA replacement tips and they've improved things but they still don't come close. I'll be buying the Sony's as soon as I can afford it.

The Sony is definitely a snugger fit, but I’ve worn it through most of an 8-hour shift without any discomfort. Sony even kind of describes it in the manual. The Sony is comfortable too, just a bit more snug.

I use the Sony XM6 daily- like 6 hours or more a day. I find them comfy and good battery duration. Of course at some point the battery will have to be replaced. In that case, in a few years, I’ll get new headphones. But I’m quite happy with the Sony ones. Solid ANC.

Don't know about the bose, but the xm6 is supposed to be easier to replace the battery on. The battery is attached with screws and not glue now and doesn't look too hard to get at.

No headphone with batteries instead can truly be Buy It For Life, but realistically either option should last a long time. I've had my Sony XM4 for years without issue. If you have a Best Buy store near you, they should have the Sony XM6 to try on. Other notes - Bose QCU2 also has a cream white color. You should also consider something like an "AirFly" bluetooth device to connect to airplane entertainment systems. It's incredibly convenient on long flights, no need to unplug the headphones if your seat neighbor needs to use the bathroom, etc.

If you’ve only tried LG, you’re already off to a solid start. they last forever. Other than that you can also look at Samsung and Sony if you want something reliable with good picture quality. TCL and Hisense are pretty popular too (especially for Roku/Google TV built-in and decent value for money). If you’re just using it for streaming or as a secondary TV, even Toshiba and Insignia (Amazon’s house brand) are decent and won’t break the bank. I’d avoid super off-brands unless you just need something temporary. I have this old Sony “shelf” stereo system. Four speakers and a receiver with 2 tape decks and a 3 disc changer. This was a gift to me back in 2001. This thing has seen my worst years… soda and food spilled on it, had to take apart top after moving it with CDs in changer, etc. This stereo still bumps so hard I could piss off my neighbors 2 blocks away if I wanted to.

65" TV Recommendations
I have a high end LG TV and the screen has "burn in " where the picture has images of lines or bars that never go away. I replaced the screen once and a couple of years later it happened again on the new screen. I will never buy another LG. I've had much better success with Samsung and Sony.

Sony WH-1000Xm# or Bose QC (any model) will last you at least a decade. Anything battery powered wont be BIFL, but my Bose QC35s are going strong for 9 years now. I also have a pair of QC 2s with a wireless mod (installed in 2013) that has lasted for over 20 years, but I barely use them because the QC35s have better ANC, fit, and sound quality. But the QC 2s are definitely more BIFL than the QC35s. Sonys though have better tech, especially their LDAC support.

Bought some Sony WH-900s for $120 5 years ago and they’re quite good, I travel with them regularly and they haven’t given me any issues, noise canceling works pretty well. Not an audiophile so I can’t speak to sound quality really but they bump and sound good to me, I’m satisfied with the purchase.

Give the Sony WH-CH720 a look. They can often be found for $80 though maybe Black Friday deals will get some down near your price range I've been running a previous model (CH700) for about 5 years. Daily usage and abusage. Battery is still going strong, lasts at least 3 working days blasting tunes. They are one of the better sounding cans I've listened to. I'm not a fan of ANC in general so I won't comment on that feature. They have a 3.5mm port so they can be used wired. The only thing I've had to do was change the ear pads when they started breaking down, which will happen to pretty much any set of pads used that much

I still use mine everyday! I use the aux port in my car and work car. And I have a amplifier/ receiver set up at home and connect nwz e585 right to it through auxiliary. Besides the great battery life it has great sound quality! I just ordered the nwa25 too and have 4 different models. All sony! Obviously I love these devices! And have used windows media player legacy to import all my music and Playlists. My biggest issue is finding a program on fedora/ or bazzite linux that will allow me to do the same as legacy. Linux recognizes the Sony player and can access the files on it. But can not import Playlist. I have tried several programs and none of them recognizes the Sony mp3 players. It is my last thing I have to figure out to fully be done with windows!

Sony’s wireless in-ear have treated me well! The battery life is amazing, can go awhile without recharging the carrying case and the buds themselves will hold a charge for many hours My experience with Apple has been the opposite. Over time, my AirPods started to die within 45 minutes and I needed to charge the carrying case once or twice a day. So I personally would not recommend.

Bought the Sony WI-C100 in-Ear Bluetooth Headphones with the neck chord in August 2023. I have washed and dried them twice now. The silicone covering the button has come off yet they still work. I’ve put them through hell and they sound the exact same as the day I bought them. Couldn’t recommend Sony enough (I also have the XM4s and I love them)

Screen randomly exploded and the second hand replacement i got, despite being newer by at least half a decade, is miles worse :/ having to stretch to an actual brand new tv to hope it's actually anywhere near as good as this *beast*

Highly recommend Sony SP800N (sports model as opposed to the WF someone else recommended which are the more premium non sports model) l. I have a pair I use for hiking and gardening that are 6 years old and going strong. I don’t wear them every day but they have had a lot of long days in the Australian sun, been sweaty and dirty, copped rain and even survived a light chewing from my Cattle Dog. Good noise cancelling, good sound, stay in ears well and they still have heaps of battery life after years of hard work.

I’m going on 2 years with my Sony wf-1000xm5’s wear them about 10 hours a day during the week. They sound great have good noise cancellation and the battery is good will last all day if you charge them during lunchtime. Had I pod pros before this and those a great with better transparency mode but one of the buds died within a year. Sony is a the way to go!

Do they have to be wireless? You can just run the wire under your shirt so they’re not in the way. I’ve used Powerbeats pro, they’ve lasted the best for me, but they are disappointing. The batteries don’t last as long as I think they should, and they’re annoyingly buggy. Especially when compared to my Sony wh-100xm2s. I’ve had them for years and they work like they’re brand new. Left them out in the rain once and I this broken them, but they came back to life after sitting a couple days. For mowing the lawn they’re fine, but if you’re doing any real work in overear headphones they’re gonna be too hot. I sweat a lot, and I think it may be harmful to wireless in ear headphones. One thing that seems to help is wd-40 specialist contact cleaner. I spray my headphones with it and let them dry off on a paper towel before I charge them.

I have Sony XM6 and they are wonderful over-the-ear headphones for everything except phone calls. I move around a lot when I’m on phone calls and the mic can get muffled quite easily. I highly recommend them for music, movies, audiobooks and audio dramas, though. They are the best headphones I’ve ever had. After I am done using my headphones, I put them away with those little silica packs to absorb any moisture leftover from my head and ears. I saw it here on this subreddit as a tip to make over-the-ear headphones last longer!

I have a pair of Bose QC-2s that have lasted me almost 25 years. They aren’t wireless, but you can buy a wireless adapter for them. Granted I stopped really using them like 10 years ago when the QC35s came out. I’ve used those pretty regularly for the past decade. I have had to replace the pads on both at least 5 times each though. Those do wear out. I also think the Sony WH-1000XM series is slightly better than the Bose options in most ways. I just can’t attest to their longevity.

Yeah transparency mode on the AirPods Pro works wonders. It’s like you’re not wearing them. I also have experience with the last gen Sony earbuds, their transparency mode is almost as good as with the AirPods there’s just a tiny bit of ambient noise reduction. I don’t know if the transparency mode on the current gen is better. But even if it’s the same it would make for a more than adequate second option.

what becomes incompatible? I just gave my housemate a Sony from \~2010 and other than the guide being deprecated (that really pisses me off, Sony, that was not cool tying the OTA TV guide to an Internet app) it still works great. Only reason I did was because a friend gave me a LG OLED that I mentioned elsewhere in this thread. We don't use the TV to stream though only as a display - to stream we use Roku or Fire Stick and just replace those when they get too slow or laggy.

But I’ve had an LG Oled since 2020 and a Sony since 2023 that have both taken several direct impacts from toys and keep on going. The only tvs I’ve had that have broken are Samsungs: 1 oled 1 plasma admittedly the plasma lasted 11 years

Omg we are in a really big season of life with really big highs and lows and nostalgic music has been huge. 90s and 2000s playlists have been MVPs for sure. My "refurbished like new" Sony ult wear headphones have been punching above the $70 I paid. They come with a wired option for flights, iPod, and plugging into my retro handheld playing Sims Bustin Out. Bluetooth for phone music streaming. They also connect to our Sony Bravia OLED tv like a dream so spouse's committee zoom meetings or baby sleeping are totally unaffected by enjoying the biggest screen in the house. They also have some of the best noise canceling out there to protect my peace as well.

As a very happy XM3 owner, I really wanted to like the XM6 but I ended up returning them. \- I found them uncomfortable. The cups aren't as deep as the XM3, so the inner cup would rub against my ears and became quite unconfortable after a few hours. They also clamped tighter as well, but I think this would have improved over time. Wicked Cushions will have deeper cups eventually, but there's no ETA right now. \- Awful Sony app. Some things never change. \- The dealbreaker - A current issue in the firmware makes audio drop from video calls if another audio source is opened, Eg: A youtube video in another window. I ended up just getting the AirPod Max. As an owner of all Apple gear it would have been the default choice, but man they're expensive (and 5 years old now). The store at least price matches an online vendor which had them for around $100 off.

Totally get what you're saying. I had the xb510as too and it’s wild how they just vanished from the market. For around $20, it’s tough to get all the features packed in, especially the un bending build and real waterproofing. I started browsing some lesser-known brands on Alibaba and honestly found a pair that’s doing better than I expected. Not exactly the same, but the mic works fine, and they've held up after getting tossed in my bag a lot. Might be worth looking into if you’re not stuck on brand names.

I hands down disagree. I've had the XM3 since they were released in 2018 and they've been flawless. Noise cancelling is insanely good, battery degradation is nonexistent (still getting around 40 hours of life), and the sound quality is great. Plus the app allows you to configure custom EQ profiles for whatever you like listening to. But most importantly, they're built to last.

While not exactly buy it for life, I’ve had the Sony XM3’s for over 6 years now. They just won’t quit. The only issue I’ve had was the ear cup material started flaking, but it was a quick and cheap replacement. 1. Apart from the ear cups, they have functioned like new for 6 years 2. The ANC is great, though I hear some of the newer versions are even better 3. I’m no expert so take this one with a grain of salt: sound quality is solid, but again I hear more recent versions are even better 4. I wear them for 8+ hours a day several times a week without any discomfort 5. Here’s where the XM3’s fall a bit short. They have pause, skip forward/back, and volume controls. They only has 1 Bluetooth chip, so swapping audio sources takes a few extra steps. The XM4’s and later have multiple chips making this easier 6. I’ve recently done 12 hour travel days while using ANC nearly the entire time. Hope this helps.

My Bose headphones which I bought 8 years ago is still working fine. Probably similar or higher quality would be the Sony’s, but I didn’t realize that back then. Seconding this - anything with flash memory and replaceable batteries should work indefinitely. The Sony model you mentioned is basically a smartphone minus the phone - probably an "avoid", if only for the internet connectivity and lack of updates. Any phone with an SD card slot and VLC player would suit your needs and also not take up more space. That being said, for a dedicated player, you're looking for any of the name brand stuff from ~2005-2015 that takes an AA battery.

TVs are not BIFL…. Some can last very long, but hopefully you’ll live on long enough to see even the longest lasting TVs die :) In general, Sony is on top in terms of both quality and reliability. They have been for a long time as well. In the past, other brands such as Toshiba, Panasonic were also seen similarly, but they lost their way later (Panasonic has started to make their return to the US so let’s see how that goes). Of course, besides periods of good sales, Sony TVs also top the price lists. Depending on your budget, X90L, Bravia 7, Bravia 8, Bravia 9, A95L are all great. Avoid Bravia 5 and Bravia 3. I would avoid LG TVs that aren’t OLED. They’re top of the mountain for OLEDs (extremely comparable to Sony but quite a bit cheaper). Models like C4, G4 and later are great, but avoid their QNED, LED, etc ones. TCL makes great mini LEDs at a great price as well. QM7 and QM8 are great bang for your buck. That said, though, it’s important to know that you’re much better off buying TVs with a good warranty (especially for OLEDs, you want warranty that covers burnin. Costco’s Allstate one doesn’t). Regardless of brand, there’s a bit of a luck factor with panel lottery. You can end up with a shitty panel even from the best manufacturers. I recommend RTings . com for TV reviews. No reviewer is perfect, but they don’t post sponsored/biased stuff.

i own a few portable cd players like this, right now i daily one from 2006 that i picked from ebay (sony FJ-041). One of the last ones sony made. Really better than using spotify or whatever else is out there. CD's have great sound quality, are usually everywhere compared to other formats, and I don't even get in trouble for using it while in school, unlike a phone, which its pretty obvious you shouldn't have it out during the day. solid player, gotta look for ones that you can turn the shock protection off though, you get the most quality out of your songs with the cost of skipping being present.

IMO, Sony Bravia 9 mini LED is really nice and I don't have a problem with them. But ultimately, you're the one paying for it, so you should go check it out in person. Sony TVs are not like other brand, tho. You will have to adjust color temp and everything else. Another part that people don't talk about is UIs. I absolutely hate Samsung UI. It's beyond disgusting.

Looking for good quality Bluetooth earbuds all around including sleeping.
I've got sony wf-1000XM5. Had for a year, I use them every day. Sound quality is good, the in ear bit need replacing every couple of months but they mould to the ear so I find them much comfier than the hard plastic ones. Once you know which size fits your ear you can find places that sell a bunch on the same sized replacements. I got mine from sonicfoam, though i think you can only get that through amazon. They offer ones for a range of different earphones so make sure your getting the right one and that it fits in the case with the size you need. They do fall out from time to time, and I have never taken them running, I sometimes wear a beanie just to keep them securely in. I often fall asleep with one side in. I don't know how long they last battery wise, but like I said, I use them all day. The only issue I have is that the automatic setting is ambient sound rather than noise cancelling, but it's easily correctable in the app (sound connect).

I also got a Sony XBR3 46" approx 20 years ago and saved $1k through a friend who knew a Sony distributor. TV was on most of the day in a shared house for years. I only ever had one issue after about 10 years where it wouldn't turn on that cost me $400 to repair from a local repairman (200 part, 200 labor). Still going strong today.

I think I have a 2006 Sony Bravia and one of the nice things about it is it has front facing speakers, instead of rear facing. Makes the sound slightly better, but it has no base at all and kind of farts unless the base is kept low. The picture is still decent though, and it stays in what ever setting I leave it, never updates (because smart features weren't a thing) and starts pretty fast in comparison to modern stuff. My 2023 Sony has a far better picture, but a lot of annoying junk I never use, since I have an Apple TV to handle the modern stuff. The visual gap between the two is huge, but the older one makes me wish I could just spend more for a completely dumb, non-data harvesting, version of the new one. No one really cares about that though and would always go for the cheaper version, I probably would too.

It's survived *everything* including me puching the snooze button so hard I dislodged the case, on a couple occasions. (I was able to re-seat it). The radio still works, though I never use it anymore. It does it's job to beep loudly in the morning, and all of the buttons still work without issue. The thing is never going to die.

Bose more comfortable and sturdy. Sony sound better and I think they offer better noise cancellation. The Sony hinge is weak and lots of people break it. However I slide them on instead of stretching them open to plop on my ears. I have the QC25 that someone gave away, and the Sony 1000x (mark 1). I also have the AirPod Pro 2. I feel the AirPods have better NC than the Bose but don’t sound as nice but it’s a different feel because they are inside the ears.

Pretty sure I had both. I did like the sound of the QC 25, but the button broke after some time and could no longer turn them on. Can not say that I was gentle though. I did like the simple button layout, I have the QC 35 I now and the noise cancelling is broken and I had to change the pillows twice. As soon as I stopped buying pillows from the bose brand, the pillows serm to last longer. Bose burned me too many times. Maybe I just repeatedly got unlucky, but Bose I would not recommend as a purchase and much less with the promise of lasting for life. No, my next ones probably will be Sony, even though the sound and the button layout are less to my liking, they seem to hold up much better when I ask the people in my environment, who got them. I just don‘t like the complicate touch control etc. Just overengineered imo.

You should head to the 4ktv or home theater sub. Closest bifl with mostly watching at night will be a mid range (a80, c4) sony or lg OLED. I personally love the sony interface and have never felt the need or want for a roku stick. LG interface is not as good in my opinion.

Sony bravia tv bought in 2006 one of the first flat screens, and was very expensive. Been used since then and still working great, image quality is very good, and sound is great quality, lound and clear, with bass too!
I also have 40" Sony Bravia TV, made in 2006 manufactured in Japan. I found it at a local goodwill store and I thought tv was really handsome design, so I bought it for few dollars. But upon turning it on, I was amazed by the color and quality of the picture. It's only takes 1080i (interpolated to 1366x768, but I don't miss a thing compared to a 4K tv at this tv size.

Great camera bag, very sturdy while being light. Can be customized and the dividers are totally movable. I am an environmental reporter, so my gear takes a beating. But this bag has held up. I agree. As far as no electronics can really be BIFL, Sony is a pretty darn reliable brand when it comes to repairs and replacements even on pretty old products. I'd stick with the Sony buds. Clean the contacts, reset the firmware and if that doesn't help get them fixed by Sony.

For me, it’s AirPods for calls and the Sony over the other headphones for everything else. Maybe some beats if you want to have volume while you’re at the gym, but I don’t want noise cancellation from your earbuds, and I want over the ear headphones to be what I would want on a plane and listening to music in a coffee shop. Also, for what it’s worth, I recently realized I could add AppleCare to my AirPods for like 15 bucks a year, and I have no clue that it ever ends.

All Bluetooth wireless headphones are semi-disposable products, and how quickly you war down the battery depends on how often you use them. And eventually codecs evolve and other technological bits prompt an upgrade. At least the battery on the Sonys is moderately easily replaceable. I only really use mine for flights and on public transport, so the battery on my mkIIs is still going strong years and years later.

Sony has wonderful noise cancelling, but can be a pain on the software side, and audio quality is meh. Bose has better audio, but it’s somewhat more tuned imo (towards a specific listening style). I’ve loved bose but I’ve also had them fall apart on me WAY faster. Airpods Max make no goddamned sense and yet I just love them. The sound is better than the above to me, if you’re using Apple Music at least, and they just *feel* good. But so much of the design is beyond silly. They’re the ones I use most. However. If money were no object I’d get Focal Bathys. No question.

I've had the Sony WH-XB900N for 5 years and they have been great, I use them about 30 hours a week. Basically no wear on the padding. I love the sound quality and bass. They work nice for calls, although the mic can be too sensitive while in the office. There is minor noise cancelation, which helps a lot for ambient noise in a busy office, traffic, and riding airplanes. Idk if they are current production, but I'd trust Sony after having these.

The sony wh-1000xm4 is the best. I have had the xm3’s for 6 years of daily use and they’re going strong, only recently needed to replace the ear pads which were $10 and took 5 minutes. The xm4’s added a few features that make it worth upgrading. The xm5’s have a redesigned shape and don’t collapse down as small making them slightly worse for travel.

Digital cameras last a long time, probably bifl if you treat them well. I have had a couple die from abuse but never just normal wear. I really like the Sony point and shoots, but most Nikon and Canon are going to be nice and in budget. Assuming you want a moderate zoom, Canon powershot, Nikon coolpix, Sony alpha 6100, or old/new old stock point and shoot are all solid options. Most will take better raw images than a phone, newer ones will be more competitive with processing the image data into better looking shots.

I can't tell the screen size for your Bravia in the photo, but, it looks a lot like mine. Mine is a 40" screen. When they first came out, I saw them for $10,000 in San Diego County. I waited a while, and got mine for only $1,600. A few months later, I saw them for $800. I guess I didn't wait long enough. Still has a great picture and sound.

BTW, if you want headphones, get over-the-ear, not on-the-ear. You want something that puts very little pressure on your skull or they will start to hurt after a while. As a bonus, most headphones come with a cord that lets you plug them in, and many will still work without being turned on so you don't even need the battery. Sony and Bose are generally considered to be the best. Beats is highly rated but I see a lot of posts on the channel asking how to fix a broken band. Apple AirPods Max are highly rated but very expensive. Bose has one of the lower battery life at 24 hours, many are rated for much longer than that.

Buds can only take you so far in both of those categories. I switched over to Sony XM4's three years ago. I jog, work, and sometimes sleep with them on! If you haven't experienced their active noise canceling, it can completely mute the noise of a baby crying beside you on an airplane. They have changed my life.

I wouldn't buy top of the line as TVs are so cheap now just plan to buy another in a few years if you want upgrades or just let it sit for a decade like I do. The reviews on PCMag or some other crappy site said the Sony had great colors with excellent skin tones and very black blacks. My next TV will be another mid-range Sony. Oh, the sound quality wasn't great but my coworker recommended Audioengine A5 powered bookshelf speakers and I love those speakers. I bought a cheap remote control power box for it so I can power the speakers on from the couch. This was great setup in 2010, a bit outdated for 2025, but honestly, I would buy it again today. It's not internet friendly, but works well enough with Chromecast. Too bad some of the services like Hulu and Netflix kind of suck with Chromecast. Why pay for "Smart" when you have a laptop/phone that has more smarts?

I'm not really an Apple guy tbh but I tried both models, (basic and pro model) and I'm quite surprised. The sound on both are quite something and the fit is very confortable. I have the Sony wf-1000xm4 and as much as the sound is good, the fit harder to be steady. I'm a runner and both apple model are fun to have, they stick generally good (non pro model can bit looser but can be fitter by twisting it in the ear). The little branch makes it steadier I think and the pro model was a no brainer, you stick it in there and that's it. For sure the pro model with the foam makes the insulation better, this depends on your use but for running, it's less ideal. I got the air pod pro 3 refunded only because I though I lost my Sony and found it the last day I could have the refund from the air pod and I miss them a bit tbh.

he absolutely can. there's absolutely no need to use both ears to listen to a podcast, so he can use just one. he can also put that one earbud in the transparency move, so it delivers surrounding sounds to his ear too. There are also bone-conducting headphones that are specifically made for this use case - listening while operating a vehicle. Then there are earbuds from Sony that literally have holes in them to allow the person to hear what's going on around them.

This. The old one (QC25) I have has a toggle on it, when you toggle it the active noise canceling would start, doesn’t matter if you play music or not Sounds like what you are looking for is ANC. Bose does the best job, Sony and AirPod pro are fine. In-ear earbuds and close back headphone has the best isolation. AirPods Pro also have the feature, just put it in noise canceling mode. Not sure about non pro version

You can get nice Sony or Bose ones off eBay refurbished. Straight from the manufacturer and you get a 2yr warranty with them. Turned our Bose ones in 2 times and they just sent complete replacements and only had 1 bud go bad both times. I think Samsung is doing this through eBay as well too.

For me, every computer I've owned has lasted 6+ years before I upgrade them. My current Sony Over the ear headphones that I bought refurbished is going on 3 without issues, it also has a headphone jack for when it runs out of battery. It's all about what you need out of it, making sure you buy enough ram or can upgrade later. This probably doesn't work if you want a gaming machine as you will probably upgrade sooner. But in that case, maybe build one where you can upgrade components as you go.

The best thing to do for BIFL potential on headphones is to get a set with a jack on the cup instead of a built-in cable. Then get a cord to suit your needs. It shouldn't be fancy, wire is wire. I've had Sony MDR-V6 for a long time, and the only real issue was that the built-in cord eventually broke. I was able to transplant a new cord in because I'm handy like that. But it's a common issue because the cord was LOOOOOONG. The other common issue is that the earpads disintegrate, but if you intend on keeping these for years and years anyway they should be considered a wear item like tires and replaced when faulty. You can find them in different materials, but don't buy the thicker versions because it messes with the sound. PC is highly dependent on purpose. If you want to stay up to date with gaming there's no such thing as BIFL.

This Sony WH-1000XM4/WH-1000XM5 is my personal favorite. The noise cancellation is insane (perfect for flights or noisy offices), and the sound quality is balanced with great bass without being overwhelming. They’re super comfy for long listening sessions, and the battery life (30+ hours) is solid. I’ve had the XM4s for two years now, and they still hold up great. The XM5s are a bit more refined in design and ANC, but both are excellent choices

I love 80-90s HiFi systems. Physical buttons and dials for (almost) every feature, beautiful VFD displays, lots of power, and you can still buy them in working condition - usually they just need new rubber parts or clean-up laser lens. Lots of recommendations for Sony XM4-5 series, and I personally own the XM4... BUT I would recommend to add other options. - If you have an iPhone then consider their earphones Max (or whatever the name). They truly cover your ears and interact greatly with iPhones. But they are heavy, bulky and expensive. -Bose Qc35 or whatever is their current top model. They cover the ears better than the Sony XM4-5. The noise cancelling is also as good. And usually they fit better women's music taste because the sound is softer and warmer than the Sony, like for vocal artists, jazz, electro, etc.

After having some of the bigs(bose, sony, beats) I can say Sony is the best at this point imo But got my wife the anker soundcore Q30’s for like 90$ and unless things have gone downhill, they are 90% as good as my 350$ Sony’s Like I was shocked how nice they are tbh. They make a higher version the q45 (150$) so when my Sonys die Ill probs go with them or the q30’s

Oh! I forgot to add two things! Both BIFL bonus features. 1. Sonys are wireless and wired. 2. Someone in the other thread had replaced the ear pads and battery on theirs. Apparently Sony also sells replacement parts to keep them going.

There was a post on this series I saw just a day or two ago. The XM5s are the current model, apparently. I have the XM4 and use them every single day for work calls, on every flight, and more. I have several headphones and earbuds, but the Sonys are the best by a mile. The case is excellent and the accessories are top tier. And of course there were dozens of people reporting the excellence of the XM3 for years.

I have a pair of Bose QuietComfort QC35 II from 2018 that have been great. Still work just fine, haven't had to replace the battery. I can wear them for many hours on end without issue. They were recently stolen from me by my child, so I've replaced them with the Bose QuietComfort Ultra. I've heard a lot of people like the Sony WH-1000XM series also, so I think either would make a decent choice.

I've since used them for countless yard mows, plumbing installs, gym seshs etc. I love em and also have a much cheaper pair of wf-c500 earbuds(non noise cancelling) that are also in perfect condition after at least 2 years. I have WH-1000xm4 over ear headphones and WF-1000xm4 earbuds. I was provided a pair of bose over ears for use in my cube. TL;DR Bose blows. No comparison. Both Sonys outclass bose by a mileSonys OTE have slightly larger ear cans, are more comfortable by a mile, and have better sound damping and far better sound quality. Sony customer service is amazing. The only advantage bose have is auto-on when you put them on your head. Otherwise, Sony for sure.

Noise cancelling headphones are usually wireless ones and those are never BIFL. At this point you'll do better in r/Headphones. My rec? Sony's XM4 or XM5 headphones. There's also Bose, if your focus is on noise cancelling ability. If you simply want a headphones that block sound and be BIFL, I'd suggest most popular **closed-back** (it's important) models from Beyerdynamics, Audio-Technica, Yamaha, and Sennheiser.

Sony hands down. I will never buy another Samsung product as long as I live. Within two years of purchase, my $3500 Samsung TV (came with the house) shit the bed. Then my Samsung TV crapped out. Then my Samsung Dishwasher (three years old). My Samsung washing machine flooded the basement. I've boycotted all things Samsung since and now just search for the best brand and buy it, no matter the cost. Get a Sony, you won't regret it. The picture is fantastic, their customer service is good, etc.

You're definitely misremembering. MiniLED screens can get *extremely bright*. It's their best attribute. Darker rooms are where LED's really shine. My next monitor is almsot certainly going to be an OLED specifically because I will be gaming on it. I don't do much "PC" activity at home on a desktop anyway, so OLED downsides won't even matter (and are increasingly non existent anyway)

Love our Sony Bravia. Had a lower end LG and Samsung before that. The LG went out within 5 years. The wifi just stopped working on it, and when the only services you have are streaming, that becomes an issue. The Samsung is still working, but has been demoted to be our bedroom tv.

I did my research extensively on this a month ago. I came from an LG and I’m not a fan. They are good but have settings issues and processing issues. Constantly had to fight with audio sync. This isn’t every one - but it’s there. The best TV currently on the market is the Bravia 9. Hands down - but it costs money. The next best for the money is the TCL QM8. Ended up with this and it’s phenomenal. Processing on this thing is next level.

I have a Sony android tv (google tv) and it’s fantastic. Got it from Costco with a warranty. Costco has a great warranty if you buy them They had an offer to get a soundbar bundled in for an extra hundred bucks. Because it’s android you can do more with it software wise than other TV OS’s you want to mess around. I read a bunch of reviews on rtings.com and it was everything I was looking for. (Good for pc and console gaming and general TV watching ) I like Sony because they still manufacture their TVs themselves and not license the brand name for other countries. I think the panel is made by Samsung …. Don’t fully remember.

Implied obsolescence. From the moment you turn it on the OLED pixels are “wearing” whether that’s as a pattern (burn in) or not (uniform pixel wear technology) the panel will never be as bright as the day it was purchased. To be fair, that pixel wear will take 10 years or so to reach a point where it’s noticeable (especially in HDR content) but it’s never the less a fact of the technology design. Many people could never imagine owning a TV longer than 10 years, and for those people, OLED is fine, but I’m waiting for better technology so my LED panel is perfectly fine for my needs, and will last 15 years or more (already 5 years old).

A list of BIFL not made in the USA
I can only comment on things made in Japan, but here goes: Mac Knives - Very good quality yet reasonably-priced (if price is no object, then there is an endless supply of other makers, including famous ones like Misono as well as small-volume shops that only sell locally) Makita - Power tools Miyazaki Seisakusho - Their "Geo" line of stainless steel pots and pans is very high quality, similar to All Clad Mont-bell - Outdoor gear and clothing Zojirushi - Rice cookers, hot water dispensors, insulated bottles, etc. And of course, Nikon, Canon, Sony, etc. all make great quality camera gear (though they all make cheap stuff too). Stationery isn't exactly BIFL, but Japan is known to have high-quality pens, pencils, paper, etc. Similarly, towels don't last a lifetime, but Imabari towels are really high quality. There's even a Towel Museum in Imabari.

I bought the bose nc700, which i regret. it was a pita, requires a poor functioning app to use, and is a lousy bluetooth headset. sony xm series, what i origionally wanted but the store was out of stock of in my rural, slow to replenish neck of the woods has been superior in every regard. after being unavailable for months, my local store got some back in stock as soon as the return policy on my nc700s expired. These are excellent headphones! for work and actual hearing protection, I would recomend a set of Honeywell Howard Leight earmuffs or a set of 3m worktunes with the gel. in every scenario amazon is known to sell counterfeits, so ymmv

I've had mine (XM2s, I think?) for probably five years now, and they're still in great shape. Battery lasts forever, great sound, zero issues. I don't wear them to the gym, I have a £50 pair of Soundcore over ear headphones for that because I sweat into the earcups and don't want to do that to my Sonys, but I wear the Sonys whenever I'm traveling or on public transport, and they really are great headphones.

Same, and I take mine to the gym REGULARLY. XM3s that I bought in 2021, the battery still lasts long and they sound fantastic. I did end up buying the Sennheiser M4s, but mostly because the sale was good. You can also replace the earpads on the Sony's/Bose's so it's a good (cheap) way to breathe new life into your old headphones.

The XM5s struck me with their crisp, immersive sound that really pulled me in during long listening sessions. I did notice that while both are comfortable, the QuietComfort line has a slightly softer feel over extended periods. For me, though, the richer sound and solid ANC on the XM5s made them worth the trade-off in comfort.

Sony WH-1000XM4. I got them when they first came out in 2020. I spend 3 hours daily on public transit (train & bus) for my commute. They still work and look brand new after using them 5 hours a day (3hrs for commute + 2 hrs in office), 5 days a week for 4 years now. I tried the Bose QC recently because I wanted deeper ear pockets for extra comfort. They are also lighter weight as well. And although they do feel better and less fatique I just hate the fact that you can't turn off ANC. Sometimes I just want ANC completely off and Bose doesn't allow that. So I returned the Bose QC and went back to the XM4.

17 year old Sony Bravia as good as it was back then
I have a 46" from around 2008 that I bought brand new (~$1700 CAD). Never had a problem with it and still use it til this day as the best TV I've ever had/worked closely with. I think everything looks fine on it (Netflix, PS5) but also understand I am not using say the PS5 to it's full potential. I don't think I care, as I even tried to replace it with a TV I was given but ended up not liking it because it didn't seem much better (new but a lower end Toshiba) and it barely had any ports (I have a ton on my Sony Bravia 4 HDMI, usb, etc). IF I were to get something new I would definitely be looking at another Sony Bravia - but are they (or any other brands) going to hold up like this tank? It feels like the textbook definition of "they don't make them like they used to..."

By streaming do you mean casting? Or screen sharing? The Sony tv I have, I can cast directly to it. It has the Chromecast feature built into it as it's Google tv. Screen sharing works as well. I have a Samsung phone, I used smart view feature and it uses Chromecast to cast my screen onto the tv.

hmm, yeah I would rather not have another gadget. I think I'm leaning towards the Sony Bravia now. But I don't know if I should go LED or OLED with how much brightness my house gets. I don't have to use any lighting in my home until it starts to turn dusk. I also read that OLED has stepped up since the earlier releases and if you are getting a top-of-the-line TV in either category, you are unlikely to be disappointed in its brightness or black level. If I do go with Sony, can I stream directly from an android tablet to the TV? With the current tv we have now its not possible and that's a major disappointment for us, unless we got the chromecast and like I said I don't want to have to purchase something extra.

65" TV Recommendations
I got a Sony XR-65X93L. I think it was on sale because it was being discontinued, and it was in a list of TVs good for bright spaces and watching TV, versus movies or games. I don't use the onboard smart features, I instead use an Apple TV streamer, which works with my iPhone if I can't find the remote. The great thing about the TV is it turns on when I turn on the streamer, and off when I turn the streamer off. That's probably normal now, but my last TV is from 2006, a Sony Bravia. I also set it to send audio through Bluetooth (I can't find my optical cable) to my WiiM audio streaming box, and adjusting volume with the Apple TV remote, or TV remote since both adjust volume the same way without having to directly control the WiiM. I think there were a bunch of updates on all of them which made them work together better than they did when I first got them. Another thing I did was follow a tutorial for shutting off detrimental settings, so I have stuff like motion smoother, or whatever it's called, off. I think LG and Samsung have a special setting which automatically sets everything to the cinematic ideal, with loads of settings turned off. Sony has not opted into that program, at least as of my TV, so I had to get close enough manually.

LG C4 is a great option. I have a Sony x90j 65in from 2021 and recently bought a Sony Bravia 8 OLED 55in. Both are great. I prefer Android TV over webos interface

I also wish i could buy a great quality dumb TV that will just be a great TV and nothing else. I have a master series Sony Bravia and did not connect the Wi-Fi or any smart features at all but they sure didn't make it easy to skip all that when i was first trying to set up the TV. I use a Roku box for streaming. It is way better than any smart TV UI or UX anyway.

Sony MDR-7506 over-ear headphones
I love these headphones so much. I ended up with a bunch of others based on Internet fomo... And they're good, too. But I find myself going back to the 7506 because there's something special about them. Interestingly, mix engineer Andrew Scheps recommended them for decades (not sponsored) until Audeze recently made him a $ponsored arti$t. :-) The non-detachable cable could arguably be an issue for this subreddit except... If you take care of a well-made cable it won't fail. And the 7506 comes with a repair schematic, so it's expected that you can work on them if needed. You're right about the pads. They flake within two years... But my Brainwavz pads did too! So I'm on my 3rd set of pads which I bought on a whim for $7 but they're actually great and sound like the original pads to best I can remember. Anyhow, I love these headphones. I have more expensive headphones as well but I find myself going back to these.

Obviously no TV is buy it for life. In my experience, costco usually has the best prices. 32 inches are so cheap now, just get a Sony, Samsung or LG. Im a Samsung person but people seem to really love their sonys.

I hope this gets answered! I would love some BIFL headphones. I once went through 3 pairs of SkullCandy headphones in 6 months. I even kept buying the more expensive ones each time because I thought if I spent more money then they would last longer. I didn't love but I managed to make due with the iPhone 5s headphones. However, those broke on me too. The only headphones that have ever lasted a long time for me are the [Sony Stereo Headphones](http://www.adorama.com/SOMDRZX100BK.html?hotlink=t&svfor=5m&gclid=CMSU4OqOwckCFSgVfgod8Q0GNw) that are priced very reasonably. They sound amazing too. Unfortunately I prefer in-ear headphones. So they aren't my favorite.

The ones I have are the Sony mdr 7506 studio monitors. http://www.amazon.com/Sony-MDR7506-Professional-Diaphragm-Headphone/dp/B000AJIF4E They are studio monitors so the output is very flat. That means to get the most out of them you have to use an equalizer. I recommend rocket player or poweramp, both of which have excellent equalizers. There are a few other downsides. They are not bass heavy even with equalizer and bass boost programs. If you want bass, don't get these headphones. Also, they do not cancel noise at all. You will hear all external noise. These are not your airplane headphones. If you can get past those downsides, these are amazing headphones. This is the type of hardware that benefits from flac audio files and external DACs. For vocals and jazz and other complex audio types will accurately play those cluster chords and suspensions. All of this for about $80. Edit: I just read the op about public transportation. Don't get these for her for use on public transportation. The open design will not be good for that loud environment. I will leave my post incase anyone else is looking for Christmas gifts.

Grados are a good suggestion. Headphones will eventually break-down in some way, so a good guarantee is a start. Grado will repair most broken parts for cheap or free. Note that Grado's are also an open design though. Don't be the idiot that gives them a bad review, because you thought they were closed. (For the curious, the design is set to open because it usually makes the headphone sound more natural letting air pass through). Also, for the curious, some amazing things are happening to modifying Grado's right now. It's an easy headphone to modify, but there's people building Senngrados for cheap (Vibro Labs). And you have Symphones started to release the Magnum V6 drivers, and making an open 3d printed earcup, made for the sound quality through Shapeways (in Beta). Grado's, and especially modified Grado are some of the easiest ways to get kickass sound quality on the dirt cheap, considering the hobby is getting stupid expensive. Koss is also a good suggestion and has a lifetime guarantee. If it breaks, and it will after a few years, send it in and get a new one, for life. Very cheap, open air design. Go with the Porta Pro or KSC75 (Latter has better highs, less bass, more neutral). Audio Technica is often recommended. Their M40x/M50x design is phenomenal, but they're a V shape, sucking out the midrange. Many realize their mediocrity after trying more neutral headphones (m50), the issue with the m40x is that it sounds too enclosed and slightly boomy. It is more neutral, the highs feels artificial. Supposedly there is a mod out there to fix some of these issues. My quintessential BIFL headphone is the Sennheiser HD-25. It's a 25 year old headphone, and only had a few updates. It's made to be used, the cable ports are well thought out, the parts can be bought if you break them, and are user replaceable. It sounds neutral, and this mod i've done has made them sound a lot better. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZIt_3xfHwc Yes, it's usually more than $150. Also, a lot of people ignore on-ears. I think they're one of the cheapest ways to get a good seal though, whereas many over-ears have a harder time of making a seal and having the driver at the ideal spot to the ears. I was so ambivalent to the clamp of the HD-25's in the beginning, but they loosened up with use. One might place it around something to emulate a head. I agree with Unkle_Erik, a lot of the detachable cables - ESPECIALLY ON CHEAPER MODELS - are very weak. So many sell detachable cables at a selling point, even products like mechanical keyboards, and the input is the first thing to fail. Bose is decent. They make the best noise cancelling headphones, bar none. They are overpriced and not BIFL durable. Beats is overpriced too, although the Solo 2 is considered good. Still not BIFL. Beyerdynamic has too many quality control issues. Frequent drivers dying and imbalances. Not BIFL, although a step above the last few mentions. German Maestro 8.35 gets a mention, because they're bombproof. A videos on YouTube chucking them around. An over-ear, and could use a different set of earpads you can easily switch out yourself. 3 year warranty? Cable will eventually need replacing, but it's heavier than the headphone itself (I recommend the mobile version), since the normal length can put too much weight on the side of the headphone. I also do NOT recommend V-Moda. They are not military grade design. They have a good warranty, where they will give you 50% off your next purchase, when your current one breaks. Val Kolton is trying to balance style and function, and style trumps in the end. The headband frays, the plastic can chip easily (especially where they connect to the headband, the ports are a problem. They're not the worst, but priced around the warranty, i'd say. The sound is also as v-shaped as you can get. Mega bass, no midrange at all. The headband pads are bad, and the XL are not much better. Most would do better with the M50x if they want that V. I'm also not a huge fan of the Sony's 7506/v6. It's a great design, but the quality has dropped. There's a million imitators. They're neutralish though, and meant for monitors. This means, details revealed, bass lighter, and treble can be harsh, particularly on bad recordings. I'd recommend Senal SMH-1000 as an alternative. Headphone pads on both are meh. With the M40x/M50x, Sony 7506, German Maestro's, (and Fostex below) there's like a bajillion different headphone pads that are relatively interchangeable. The Mp4nation pads are generally recommended. They're a weak "memory foam". Also note that pads can change the sound signature in a significant way. I haven't tried the Monoprice more than at a meet. They're cheap, they're durable for their price. They're uncomfortable and put a lot of pressure on the top of the head. They're a headphone that could use some serious modding to make work, which for the price, i'd rather take a koss and flop on the hammock. Good sound signature, more neutral. Also, the T50RP and subsequent mods are a good recommendation. It's a different driver type, orthodynamic. It needs an amp, so can become more expensive and certainly cumbersome. I recommend the Fulla Schiit USB amp. The T50RP is semi-open design, so sound leaks, whereas the T40RP is closed. They've been modded to no end, but the mk3's sound pretty darn good. And ortho driver, to me, sounds more precise, while having a smaller sound stage. Some prefer one to another. While, to me, a dynamic sounds like its coming from a cone, within its soundstage, the Fostex and ortho drivers sound like they're coming from a wider area (not easy to explain). I still find dynamic drivers more fun, even though they're blending more. There's a major shift in the audio industry in the past 10 years. Many of the headphones i'm recommending have been "updated", but have been around the block a few times, and are 10+ years old. Recently, you have a ton of newer companies, typically made in China. Their drivers are fantastic. I can go on many ends of my web of how good the NAD Viso HP50 sounds. It's also horribly uncomfortable and fragile though. Many of these imports have really good drivers encapsulated in poor, weak designs. Take your pick, but it doesn't belong in BIFL. Also, for funsies, I will always recommend the Sennheiser HD600 and HD650. They're not duper durable. Sennheiser offers replaceable parts. Many will disagree with me, and I don't give damns for your downvotes, but with a decent amp, they're the best open, over ear headphones for the price. More people would like the HD650 ideally, but it's a pain to find the right amplifier (Bottlehead Crack). If you're not willing to build that, or invest in something like a Schiit Valhalla, the HD600 is way more amp forgiving. It's a headphone that always sounds, "just right". If you have any specific questions, ask me. This is too much shit for me to write a faq here.

I have a pair of [Sony Studio Monitors](http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-MDR-V600-Studio-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00001W0DI) and they are incredible. My brother got them for me, he is a total tech geek so I trusted his judgement and it really paid off!! When the pads wear out you can just get new ones, so I can't see mine breaking for another 5 years (have had them for 2 now and there's no sign of wear). The sound in them is so nice. They were £60. I don't know if they sell them in the USA.

I've loved my Sony MDR-7506 headphones so much that I bought two pairs - one for work and one for home. They are bulky, but with the price they're going for on most sites you could buy the optional hard case or a pair of beaters for travel (when space is a concern). Otherwise I have no complaints with them. Sound quality is great, and they're comfortable for long hours of use.
