Boots for NYC puddle jumping
My partner and I have had the women's Joan of Arctic and men's Caribou for over ten years now. We used to live in a neighborhood that would get big piles from snow plows and a 20 minute walk to the train in slushed sidewalk from commuting first thing in the morning before anyone shoveled. If you can fit a men's size, get the men's Caribou. If not, at least get the one in women's. The men's Caribou has a more practical sole that keeps you firmly anchored in slippery conditions. The women's has a different sole. The Joan of Arctic is fine in snow, but it's got shallower, more slippery treads so they suck in slush and on wet sidewalks. Also the Joan of Arctic has like this vanity indent in the back of the ankle to make it look like you don't have cankles, but in practicality, it rubs your Achilles raw as you walk. I think those are just for people who are walking to the car, not around the city. Those boots are very heavy so bring a pair of ballet flats or something to change into once you get to work. If you're not used to them, you will get fatigued if you have to walk for a long time. However they are breathable and comfortable. They are meant to be worn without socks. We wore them on a bus ride from NYC to Toronto and around the city in the snow there, too. Feet didn't mind at all. Warm and not sweaty.

For NYC Snow, you absolutely need a snow boot like Sorel. The liner w/ Hunter works but they are a bit cumbersome to walk in. It’s just something to get used to doing. I’d also recommend keeping an eye out on other people’s footwear choice. It might help you in your search.

You’re probably going to want something taller. Although they tend to be a bit heavier, the height is needed when in the depths of winter or depths of NYC puddles - Sorell Joan Of Arctic - Wellies: Hunter, Bogs, LL Bean *Notes* - ^ Hunter sells a liner sock for warmth - LL 🫘 has something like Yaktrax specifically designed for the bean boot. These work great on ice, but not on cement. - Sorel tends to run small for me - I’d suggest sizing up a whole size for boots. Your toes and feet need room so they don’t get cold. - Also be sure to wear a wool or merino wool sock. I’m a fan of Bombas. I heard Darn Tough is good too. I like smartwool, but they tend to wear out. Thankfully, you can send back for replacement. - Additionally, you can add a sock liner (REI & I’m sure other brands have them). Much like a glove liner, they are thinner but add a lot more warmth. - Lastly, consider wearing different pants (fleece lined sweats or leggings, snow pants) when commuting & changing once at work or your destination

Mine are a bit shorter than that, but I have Sorel Joan's and they're one of the best pairs of boots I've ever had. Super fast to lace and unlace, vrry comfy, and the leather hardly has any wrinkling even after a year. I've only waxed them once.

I recommend going to any show outlet stores and checking their clearance sections. Especially out of season. About 5 years ago I found a pair high end Sorel snow boots for about $50 at a DSW. Whenever I go these stores I always see stuff like this.

Yeah, I wore my keens for most of what you mentioned, great fitment and I was super bumped when the USA pair crumbled. The sorels aren't super comfortable, feels like wearing rain boots designed for snow...... but they are great for working in the snow, stiff and robust.

15 years is pretty good BiFL, depending on how often they where worn. I have a pair of Sorel’s someone else linked a similar pair….. had them about 10 years, I only ever wear them when out clearing snow. They live in the garage next to the blower and shovel, and indoor closet the rest of the year. I had a pair of Keen’s maybe 17 years ago that lasted me 12 years and I put a ton of miles on them hiking and in the snow - wore them all 4 seasons, before they just kinda aged out. I replaced them with their more expensive “Made in USA” versions, that I brought from the Keen store in Portland…. The stitching separated on both shoes in several places within 2 years. Really not a good look paying $50+ more for the same boot made in the US and it fell apart. Replaced them with Danners that can be re-soled, so far I’m happy with them.

I’ve had really good luck with Keen’s (there leather Chelsea boots are pretty great), Blundstones also good if they fit your feet (not great for ½ sizes), and I always loved Sorels when I still needed full on snow boots. I’m in the PnW, but coastal, so Keens work fine for me 90% of the time.

I just bought a pair of Hestra leather mittens and Sorel winter boots. I have arthritis and live in a northern state so need the warmest possible coverings for my hands and feet. I did a lot of research and landed on this brands. The mittens are insanely warm but a little awkward when I’m trying to do stuff like putting the key into the ignition. The Sorel boots are incredible…very warm and comfortable.

My Sorel Joan of Arctic boots have lasted me 11 years so far! I love them and they are cute and very warm. I like alpaca socks. They are the warmest and softest things you’ll put on your feet. For jackets, depends too much how long you’ll be outside at what temperatures and when. I’m fine with my 6 year old REI brand long puffer but if I were further north and outside more often, I’d recommend Canada Goose if you can afford it. Eddie Bauer is a good budget option

I’m waiting on a more expensive pair from La Canadienne that is also supposed to be waterproof and Canadian-winter-proof. Looking for a full outdoor winter clothes system.
Silk is a great base layer if you can’t stand wool and don’t want to wear synthetic. It is not as warm as wool, but it should do the job for Midwest cold unless you are in the UP. I am a farmer in northern Wyoming and swear by Dryshod Arctic boots. If you aren’t going to be active or don’t need the height to keep your legs dry (they are made for tromping through deep mud and snow), Sorels are great snow boots.

Why is it so hard to find well-made clothes that aren't insanely priced?
Luxury goods (for the rich who have nothing better to do) and high quality (well made ) are two totally different things. Also, it's important to keep in mind that there is only so much a clothes maker can do: most people _treat_ their clothes as trash and don't actually care for it. Putting sweaters on hangers is going to ruin their shape, washing in hot water and blasting in a hot dryer is obviously going to ruin clothing. Every item has its own care that needs to be at least thought about. Today I have to clean and condition my leather winter boots before spraying them with a water proofer. It's annoying as heck to do but these shoes have lasted me 6 _Canadian_ winters. Originally cost me $125 from Sorel.

When I was 15, my dad got me a pair of Sorel Caribou winter boots. I was *not* a fan... brown, boring, not the fun colors I wanted. Fast forward 20 years, and these boots have survived everything: brutal Minnesota winters, gross Chicago slush, hikes, snowmobiling, daily commuting… they’re my absolute favorite now! And somehow, they still look brand new. Warmest, driest boots I’ve ever owned. So glad my dad went with “boring”!

Old thread, but saw your comment and that no one had responded. I'm not a boot nerd, but I am picky about how my shoes fit and feel after years as a runner. The Sorel Madson II Chukka has probably been the best shoe I've ever owned. Kind of a mid top bootish shoe. It was totally waterproof for the first couple years, now it's merely water resistant. I've done nothing to care for them and beat the hell out of em. Super comfy, whether you're walking all over town, going on an impromptu small hike, or just standing on your feet all day at a counter. I think I finally need a new pair, after 4ish years of them being the main shoe in my rotation 9 months out of the year. I wear them a half size smaller than my sneaker size.

My top five: 1. Tempurpedic mattress - going strong for 11 years and still feels like new 2. Blendtec blender - had it for 10 years and over 4k blends (it keeps track on the blender, which I love) and still going strong. I know the Vitamix is outstanding and told myself I’d buy one when the Blendtec dies, but here we are. Especially if you just need a blender and not necessarily all the additional functions Vitamix offers, Blendtec is durable and exceptional. 3. The OG Lululemon Wunderunder leggings - bought mine 15 years ago and they still look like new after years of hot yoga and group fitness classes. 4. Ethan Allen dining table - over 35+ years old. My parents gave their table and chairs to us. Wound up upgrading to new chairs from Ruggable a few years ago, but the table continues to be in exceptional condition. 5. Sorel boots - I live in Wisconsin, so my winter boots get heavy use and I’m impressed that my Joan of Artic pair are still warm and have excellent traction for the past 8 years.

I've had white Adidas sneakers for years now. I agree with all the comments about rotating though! Another trick to get more life out of shoe is to replace the laces and the inserts. You can get memory foam ones on Amazon for like $10! As for other quality shoe brands, I love my Tao sandals and leather sneakers (they are only made for women though, which is interesting), SAS, Sorel, and Naot. All of them are on the pricier side, but they are worth it for the comfort and craftsmanship! My most recent work shoes are Under Armour from their outlet, and they've actually held up incredibly well for the last year or so (I'm a nurse, so they get a lot of wear!) If you are looking for shoes made in the US d/t the cost of tariffs right now, Pikilinos are made here.

I have owned both pajar and sorel winter boots. The sorels were not great but lasted much longer. Pajar was crap I think I only got one season out of them.

In Montréal, Pajar seem pretty popular for winter use. Not sure about the durability / quality though I hear good things. Of course there is Sorel, and I'm on year 20 with mine - we'll see how this generation of their shoe holds up. :)

My classic style Sorel snow boots. Bought a pair for $100 in ‘90 and still wear them today. Threw some sno seal on them at some point. I don’t live in the snow but when I go I’m always well taken care of!

I bought a pair of SOREL winter boots 6 years ago. I wear them almost every day from December until April. It's like they're still brand new - still look great, no visible wear, and keep my feet warm and dry. I suspect I will get at least 10 years out of them. They were about $120 CAD in January 2019.

True. I am still wearing ones from the early 1990s and they are still great. Better quality than the new stuff by far. If you can thrift old ones, Sorrels are absolutely worth it.

Seeking recs for high-quality Chelsea boots or other style- type women's boots
I agree with the Sorel. I've had mine since 2016 and their still in fantastic shape. I'm in Michigan so wear them through our intense winters. Last winter I bought a pair of Timberland steel toe, waterproof boots. They are not looking good but don't leak and are still comfortable.

I'm in the same boat (bought in 2015-2016). I don't use them ALL of the time but I probably wear them 60 days out of the year and they are still waterproof, comfy and look like they're in great shape still.

Sorel boots. I have a couple questions.
I have a pair that I bought at least 20 years ago. They’re suede with full shearling lining and they are still my go-to’s in the snow if I’m going to be out for a while! Big mukluk style. They were Uggish before uggs existed. 🤣 They are warmer than anything else I’ve ever had and have held up beautifully. The soles are now getting pretty worn though, so they’re not as grippy as I’d like anymore, but that’s probably from wearing them daily during winters that I commuted on the subway. I’ve tried new ones, but returned any I bought because they just weren’t comfortable or warm. I’d say if you can find an old pair, they’d be worth fixing up. I’ll probably have mine re-soled before I give up on them.

Well I love my sorels (and recognize they are not the same as the old ones), no footwear is really BIFL. Some that are recraftable, sure, but I don't think these are. If you are actually wearing them for 40 years you'll wear through the sole. Wear once a year? put in a closet for 3 decades? Sure it'll last, but that ain't impressive.

I was about to post about these; just got back from my first trip hiking in the mountains with them. Scored a pair exactly like yours (the "Caribou" model) for $15 at the thrift store a couple months ago. I was very impressed how well they kept my toes warm and dry, and how the tread pattern was gnarly enough for excellent grip but easily shed the packed-in snow so you're not tracking too much inside. While the current production ones are Asian-import garbage, there is still a good supply of vintage Canadian-made ones on eBay. Most sellers include a photo of the tag on the liners; the older they are, the higher the percentage of wool, which is much warmer than the polyester they use today. The old ones also use a trim of actual sheep hide at the top rather than polyester fleece - that's not doing too much insulating so material doesn't matter so much, but you do want some kind of fleece trim, as it seals snow from falling down inside. Be sure to work some leather conditioner in to keep them supple - the leather on mine (which must be at least 30 years old) is still softer than my cheap everyday work boots.

Yes - they do. It's imported. The reviews on the cabela's site are not favorable. While Cabela's has a "lifetime" guarantee on clothing and footwear, I'm not sure that heading in to replace the boot is worth the time. THAT SAID, Be sure you know that the LL Bean boot is good, but not perfect. It's slippery as a mofo on certain surfaces and you will fall and crack yer frikkin head open if you're not aware of that and comfortable with it. Ice? Forget about it! No. Dear god no. Personally, I'd be looking at a pair of Sorel's. The Caribou is a long time favorite of people who have to hang out in parking lots in teh winter. And people who have to run around through the snow. As good as the bean boot? Ehhhh.... well.... maybe. Warmer, yes, absolutely. As durable and with the same guarantee? No. And not made in the US, AFAIK. They used to havea plant in upper new york state but I'm not sure that's true. Every single LL Bean duck boot is made in Maine. (ended that with a period). Why are LL Bean duck boots unavailable? The people who were wearing Uggs before 2014 decided that LL Bean duck boots are the new Uggs and have bought them all out. It's strictly a fashion trend. While LL Bean has upped their production levels to unprecedented states - they can't keep up. In a couple years, expect used Bean duck boots to be all over the thrift stores and all over ebay for pennies on the dollar. Personally... I have two pair. One needs repair as I drive in them and the threads under the right heel are worn through. They will fix them free. The other pair is an uninsulated pair and are insanely waterproof. Until I go in ABOVE the top of the boot, in which case my socks suck up all the water into my feet and I go "squish squish squish" with every step. I wear wool socks iwth them, so I still stay warm, but it's annoying. Bean boots are good, to a point. But if I were out and about in deeper cold, I'd look at another pair of Sorel Caribou. They really saved my feet when I moved to Colorado. Until the dog decided they were tasty and ate the leather uppers, they were my favorite boot. Encourage her to get what she really wants and what shes going to be happiest with long term. If you don't chances are she'll be shopping again for what she wanted all along in the future. Not to mention underlying resentment. I don't expect my wife to weigh in when I buy tools...etc. Ugg is a good brand and they make some good boots. Sorel and Hunter are other brands that make good boots that are also stylish. My wife owns an assortment of ugg, sorel, and hunter. The sorels are her favorite.

Honestly UGG has great customer service. I had a pair I wore for 2 years straight, treated with waterproofing and cleaned regularly. I live in a very snowy area and wore them in light snow, for deeper snow I wore specific snow boots (Sorel). The UGGs developed a crack in the side near the sole and water would leak in. Contacted customer service, explained the problem. They sent me a brand new pair no questions asked. UGGs are comfy and warm, I don't really care how they look for "fashion". I mostly care about staying warm. So my suggestion is to buy her UGGs. You can find them on sale at Nordstrom or Zulily often. You can also find them at Marshalls.
