Sori Yanagi Kettle - WOW!
Handle hinges feel very sturdy and have high friction. It does not freely fall and only moves when you want it to. The plastic handles might be seceptive to melting from open flame but you'd have to set it down directly in the flame for that to happen. I do not see a way that they would be damaged under intentional use. The lid is not a friction fit. But, it isn't at risk of falling off unless you put the kettle upside down. Maybe my house is quiet but in the living room I can hear the hiss of the water boiling very easily. I initially thought this would be a concern that it didn't whistle, but I don't find myself missing it. Alternatively, if you're worried just set a timer? Spout shape is great for pouring and there's actually a grate with holes between the body and the spout. The metal has a very high quality feel to it and the bottom is flat vs many other kettles which are a rolled seam that feels flimsy for lack of a better term and doesn't always mate well to the burner.

Metal Kettle on induction hob - no more throwing away plastic kettles.
A bit late posting but I've had a Sori Yanagi kettle for almost 20 years now and have never seen any rust anywhere on it. There's mineral buildup sometimes but that isn't about the kettle and you just clean it off with some kind of acidic cleaner or solution.
