Keep in mind the TC5 is actual USABLE capacity. Many washers use nowhere near their stated capacity. Typical loads for us include : Set of queen size 6 oz flannel sheets Set of 2 bath towels, 2 hand towels, 2 wash cloths, pair of jeans, 2 pair pjs, a few flannel shirts, socks, underwear Queen blanket or bedspread Lots and lots of dog towels - 8-10 bath towels at a time with no problems I have washed comforters (queen or king) but it is not recommended for any home machine.

What about the TR7? Just don’t run it on the eco settings and it should clean just fine, it’s digital just like the TC5, those who claim it’s “analog” are incorrect. Both have control boards. . Also, remember detergent dosage is extremely important. Too much and it will actually trap odors and never really get clean. **less is more**.

My Grandmother’s Dryer
I'd say it's a top of the line 70's model. Does it had a dryness sensor for automatic shut off? If so, that's an early one. I liked the lint filters on the top! I had a Kenmore washer that looks similar to the one you have. It was not a water saver but it sure washed clothes very well because water use was not an issue back then. If something went wrong with it, I'd flip on it's side, see what was wrong and order a new part from sears and fix it. The gas dryer was the same way, nice and simple. I have LG washer and gas dryer now, like all low water use washers they are not as good at washing as what my 25 year old Sears was. For me the LG wash cycle takes over two hours to get things clean and clothing needs to be spot treated. The LG dryer tangles things up. Consumer Reports rates LG as the best and I have had no trouble with them for the last ten or so years. The longest lasting washers and dryers out there now are Speed Queens, but they are more expensive and are American made. I recently bought a new Kenmore upright vacuum and really like it and I have a small Kenmore for the camper. It has a disposable bag which I really like, no more bagless and getting dirt all over dumping the bin.

Speed queen makes products for women that appeal to men. I wanted to buy a set, my wife wanted the ultra unreliable removable agitator xl Washbin that whirlpool makes. I bought the whirlpool because she uses it, and doesn’t want to take the king blankets to the laundromat or dry cleaners. I’m the ideal speed queen customer and I didn’t buy it because my wife does the laundry.

How old? The TR7 and DR7 have a 7 year warranty that will transfer. If they're fairly new Id say yes. If they "dont know" ask for serial numbers and call speed queen. The automated menu can tell you how much time is left.

Speed Queen TC5 uses the same exact 19 gallon water fill and capacity as these larger tub Maytags from 1966-2006. It's not a water efficiency problem, it's cost. People want top quality for cheap pricing that comes from 3rd world countries with slave labor prices and no retirement or benefits. Companies want lightweight so overseas shipping is cheap. These Maytags weigh 225 pounds, 40 pounds more than a new Speed Queen TC5 and much heavier than any other top load made in the last 30 years except their own design.

had a similar situation with a maytag from the 90s last year. the repair guy told me straight up - if it's more than 20 years old and needs multiple fixes, you're often better off replacing. service calls alone are $100+ just for them to show up, and vintage parts can be hard to find. that said, kenmore 70 series are known to be tanks. if you can find a local appliance repair person (not a big company) who's willing to give you an honest quote, might be worth one last shot. but realistically, a new energy efficient washer will pay for itself in water/electricity savings over a few years. we went with a speed queen commercial grade - more expensive upfront but built to actually last.

Your dad's probably right tbh - if you're not handy and don't have time for constant repairs, that old Kenmore is gonna keep being a pain. Speed Queen is definitely the way to go if you want something that'll actually last, just be ready to pay for it upfront instead of nickel and diming yourself with repairs every few months

As a repairman I'd either fix it or get a speed queen. I wouldn't mess around with any other brand. The quality is embarrassingly bad on most new washers. Lg is OK for cheaper washers but will not last like that kenmore. Their front load washers have used the same drain pump for years that go out just looking at them funny. Whirlpool/maytag/amana are not the company they used to be. Many are breaking shortly outside the warranty period and cost as much to repair as they do replace. Ge is hit or miss if you get a decent one Samsung is all around bad and their parts cost a fortune. Bosch tend to be OK but their washers aren't as popular as other brands so I don't see enough to really know. Electrolux/frigidaire is a pain to deal with and not built like they were in the past.

It wouldn't meet modern water efficiency standards. It's why it's become effectively impossible to buy that style of washer. They can only be sold for commercial use, but commercial users are going to go with a front loader 99% of the time. I think Speed Queen still makes a top loader but it's not as good as the old ones as it also uses less water.

Maytag is nowadays just a rebadged Whirlpool. They do make a commercial unit. On the cheap side, go Amana with the curved lint catcher on the top right. It is also another Whirlpool brand but is based on a 1960s model. Other than that for longetivity go Speed Queen.

My 30+ year old Maytags just got replaced with some beautiful speed queens! I fixed those Maytag’s so many times, they were beasts! They no longer made the parts, and I used up my stash of ones I bought 15 years ago. It was time, so hopefully the Speed Queens will outlast me. Trick is to buy common replacement parts after the warranty is over.

If you can find one that actually fills with water. We ended up going speedqueen to get that full water fill and to get away from the plastic barrel casing inside (to avoid internal mold forming at the plastic layer). Clothes haven't been this clean in 10 years. Smells and stains actually come out, it's amazing.

After 2011 due to regulations, a lot of the internal parts were switched from metal to plastic. I've bought two dryers and two washers and if another falls out of the sky I'll buy it too. They just don't make them like they used to and probably never will again.

I have a whirlpool toploader (the cheap one everyone has) and I've been able to repair it or replace parts because it's such a ubiquitous model. Lots of tutorials on Youtube. We have hard water so about every 6 months we have to replace the mixing doohicky for $20. It's been my husband's for almost 10 years. I dream of a speed queen someday.

Speed Queen is known for build quality and reliability washer/dryers. They make commercial units as well as laundromat machines. Their front loaders are top notch. But they are so expensive. Best warranty from my understanding. Second is Electrolux. I have two sets of the 600 series and they are solid. But I like that parts are relatively cheap and they are easy to work on.

I have a new (last 18 months) Bosch dishwasher and LOVE it. Quiet, quick and stuff gets clean even on the 1 hour short cycle. We just bought a used secondhand Speed Queen washer and honestly? It’s the best washing machine I’ve ever used. It isn’t pretty but it works great and I have yet to experience a single issue. Our old GE washer constantly left residue on clothes no matter how little soap we used, and frequently needed rebalancing. I will never buy anything but Speed Queen again.

Like others here I heard the same thing from techs. Never buy Samsung. I wish I had known that before we bought Samsung in 2016 and it was fine for about 4 years. It was mostly the dryer that had issues but it constantly had issues with the rollers. I replaced about a dozen of them and it always took a few runs to get anything dry. My wife hated the washer but I never had to work on it so that was a plus. It did rust out and I’ve seen that’s fairly common on them. Bought speed queen a year ago and they’ve been great. Still too new to know about reliability but I wanted something with the longest warranty I could afford. They clean great (never use eco modes) and dry exactly how I expect.

I bought a speed queen set and I love it. It’s quiet, super fast, does an amazing job, no frills, great warranty, great network of repair supporting shops in my area. I have called service on it once and it was our improper venting which was embarrassing. Love my speed queen. I bought a washer and dryer, waited for sales for a year but never saw these units on sale. Also opted out of scratch and dent for the warranty

I had 2 LG washing machines and now have a speed queen and I will never go back to an LG machine. It just doesn't clean at all when compared to the speed queen. Also, don't be afraid of the impeller. I never got anything stuck around it. It is very well built. Others seem to think that LGs are good for a quick wash... If a long wash doesn't clean properly, a quicker wash can only be worse. Side note, I am not paying for my water consumption. I can't tell how much it would cost to run a SQ if I have to pay for water.

We have the Thermador dishwasher and speed queen washer and dryer. Absolutely wonderful products. Only reason we went with Thermador over Bosch, we liked the quality of the racks more. Everything felt like toys compared to the Thermador.

Have had our speed queen top loader for 13 years running multiple loads per day. No computers. Love it! It is also modifiable, tho I have not needed to. As it is purely mechanical, not computerized, I can change how hot my hot wash setting can go. I’ve never needed to do so. The hot wash setting is plenty hot.

Miele dishwasher finally. Has been rock solid. Speed Queen washer and dryer. Again rock solid. Might be smaller loads but 3x faster, so overall throughput is better. Family of 6-12 depending on who is home for the holidays or weekends.

We’ve had a speed queen washer for a couple of years now and it works as good as the day we bought it. We got the one with the steel tub and basic knob style control. Avoid fancy touch screen panels and anything with a computer.

We have speed queens as well. TR5 I believe but what i loved about them is how service friendly they were. We had Samsungs and the tech that acme to work on it spent about the whole daytaking it apart and putting it back together.

Had my Speed Queen TR7 since April 2023. Only a little over two years so I can’t really speak to the longevity of the product, but so far I’ve been incredibly happy. I’ve also found the warranty to be pretty spectacular. A month or two ago I had a drain pump fail and it truly was a no hassle experience. A tech came out the same day to swap the pump out.

Speed Queen does make a front loader. At 3.5 cubic feet it certainly big enough for a queen size comforter. Additionally, Miele, despite its small size, washes quite a bit of clothes. I believe they're biggest washer holds 9 kg(just like the Speed Queen they are designed to be stuffed nearly full). That is surprisingly close to the maximum you can fit in a modern LG. Also, the LG washing machines with the turbo wash 360 are the highest rated machines. The general rule is never to buy an appliance from a company that makes TVs or cell phones. But, the one exception is LG laundry. They are at the top of their game for all the mass market brands. Miele and SQ are designed for 10,000 loads. Whereas, most modern washing machines are designed for roughly 2,500 loads during their lifetime. If you really want a BIFL washing machine make sure you look at the Miele Little Giant (30,000 loads).

Personally, I would avoid LG, and lean towards Whirlpool, Maytag, Amana, Speed Queen, Kenmore, Frigidaire, Electrolux, and more. I know a few of those fall under the same parent companies, but they all specialize in appliances. If you want a Speed Queen but can't afford one now, maybe look at marketplace, nextdoor, etc for a local used one cheap and then save for a bit until you can afford the Speed Queen. I've seen washer dryer sets sell for $40 online and they'll usually run for a year or two at least and you could use that time to save and find a deal on what you actually want and something you know will last.

It’s rough, I feel you. Go with a simpler top-loader from brands known for durability (think Speed Queen or Whirlpool’s basic models). Avoid fancy smart features coz they often fail imo. Look for solid metal parts, long warranties on motors, and skip the super cheap sales. Not glamorous, but you’ll likely get 8-10 years instead of 1 🙌

I bought a $500 Hotpoint about a year ago. Figured even for a cheapie i should get 5 years from it. Do not recommend. The drive belt broke after 8 months taking the motor with it. Fortunately it was still in warranty, but guess what? The dealer I bought it from sells but does not service. Hotpoint sent another local dealer out to do the warranty repair. Might invest in a Speed Queen or another well regarded model next time. I don't need a lot of fancy features. Reliability is the important feature for me.

We got the TR5 which I believe is one of the newer model families and it has the more “gentle” agitator. It’s supposed to be less tough on clothes but with the same level of durability and simplicity as the TC line. Main difference besides that is that it has a lid lock. I agree that some of the larger front loaders might clean better and I enjoy the features more. We needed one that was small enough to fit through a tight space so the speed queen was basically our only choice. We came from having a very small washer so I actually think it cleans a comforter fine and the capacity is great. It also has been awesome with draining/wringing out water better than our front loader did so we’re able to spend less time drying. We’ve only had ours for like 6 months, but so far it’s out performed our old front loader but I’m sure how it would have compared to a normal sized front loader if I had had one.

They have a front load style, but it didn't have great reviews back when I bought my TC5. Hopefully, it improved. I find the TC5 to be spacious enough. The agitator is removable and has a delicate cycle. If you need a quiet machine, my TC5 is not for you. Maybe the newest ones are quieter. I use duvet covers on my comforters and wash the covers.

Seconding what others have said - Speed Queen. We have the TR5 and DR5, bought together in late 2024. We run 3-4 loads a week through the washer and dryer and have been happy so far. My only gripe is that I feel like the dryer runs super hot so I feel like it can cook the clothes if they aren't soaking wet. I prefer to use the 'near dry' setting to avoid cooking the clothes. It seems like it gets them like 90% dry on this setting, then I usually just hang dry everything the rest of the way. If you plan to move them yourself, be advised they are heavy as fuck. They are definitely built tough with lots of metal instead of plastic, and it shows when you try to move it. I pretty much got them in place and haven't moved them since. I need to move my dryer to clean the vent and I am not looking forward to it because its such a PITA to move. Despite those issues, I'd still buy the washer and dryer set again.

Uggh, that sucks. I’m sorry. Gotta save your strength for the stuff that really matters. As far as replacements, if our current unit ever dies, we’ve decided on Speed Queen, no question. Most likely a TC 5, or maybe a TC 3, depending on prices at whatever time that ends up being. I don’t trust the more complex touchpad controls like you see in the 7’s and don’t need any of those extra features anyway. The smaller control board and the knob selectors in the 3 & 5 units is fine by me and represents less to go wrong, in a BIFL sense. The TC series have the traditional motor and transmission with belt drive, which makes them easy to service if that were ever to be needed and delivers a stronger cleaning motion to the clothing. In talking to a dealer, there are occasional returns with the TR for complaints of inadequate cleaning, but they’ve never had a return of a TC for any machine-related issue or any complaints regarding wear & tear of clothing, so that’s the line they say they strongly recommend. The TC’s are about as traditional as you can get in the modern era, it would seem. A buddy grew up in a family that serviced washers and dryers for laundromats down south and he is adamant that he will only ever use and recommend Speed Queen based on his personal experiences with both the machines and the company, and he’s never been anything other than a straight shooter with me, so hearing him say that sealed the deal for us. Of course, now that we’ve come to that conclusion, our current Kenmore unit (which we love) apparently plans to live forever. But there you go.

They are more expensive. No doubt about it. I think I paid about $800 for mine, probably five years ago. Without doubt, like everything else, they’ve probably gone up in the last few years. Here’s how I looked at it. How much is a service call and repair to fix whatever breaks on the big box store washer and dryer? How many times will it need to be repaired/replaced over a ten year period? A fifteen year period? A twenty year period? The few hundred extra on a basic Speed Queen will pay for itself many times over, if you keep it a while. Buy it once and be done with it. I’m well in to middle age. I’ll be shocked if I ever need another washing machine.

While the speed queen may need repairs, it’s just about the easiest machine to fix. Everything’s accessible from the front panel. I had an Electrolux front loader before and you had to pretty much take apart the entire washer just to change the seal, or do literally any maintenance.

Sorry, that info is out of date. Water regulations mean that most washers will be all but useless to you; they won’t be allowed to use enough water to get the laundry clean. Speed Queen gets a loophole because they are commercial, so they get to use a (nearly) full tub of water. The specific model I suggest is the TC5. They are hard to get because demand is up and the factory can’t keep up. Don’t get picky about the color (they come in matte black or normal white); just buy the one you can find near you. If you can get a *working* TC5 or the 10+ year old version with the swirl/swoosh design on the controls, take that. (People call them “golden unicorns” because they are hard to find, but they don’t have a name/designation.)

Look into bed pads- disposable or washable- easily available on Amazon. For a washer, top loader- speed queen is best but if price is an issue go with whirlpool. Costco has the best deals and return policy imo As for the odor, I had a LOT of luck with cloth diapers by pre-rinsing. Just throw in tub and hose down for a bit, once you feel like they got a good rinse, throw in the washer on a “deep” cycle with some borax and detergent, vinegar in for softener.

You need a top loading machine for that kind of soil. A front loader isn't going to get that clean enough. I would go for the Maytag MVWP586GW, which is the entry level commercial grade machine, or a Speed Queen / Hubesch tr5. I think the speed Queen is a better machine, but the Maytag is likely going to be a better deal.

Speed queen tc5 top loader we have used a lot (cloth diapers), we are figuring out a filling issue currently with the cold water, but I think it's a hard water build up issue and is supposed to be a $25 part. Hot water loads still run fine which is what you need for human waste anyway.

Speed Queen TC5! It is the no bells and whistles model, has an agitator that actually agitates unlike the TR models, fills completely with water, and does not have a lid lock so you can add things after it's going. We have one and the matching dryer. The washer is amazing! The dryer, is suggest just getting one elsewhere for half the price as long as you don't care about the set matching. We only have the dryer because we got our set used for $400, which was a STEAL as it was only maybe a year old and new it was over $2K but when people need to move and don't have time to sit on marketplace, you get a good deal! We also have 4 dogs and do quite a bit of laundry and the washer handles it all with no issues, even king size comforters (they aren't super thick ones)!

An appliance store owner gave a talk at a business group I’m in. He said Speed Queen was the best quality. They’re pricey, but it sounds like that’s not your main concern. Personally, I wouldn’t get a front loader for your needs. The drum itself never seems to get clean. Just fyi, your laundry needs aren’t all that demanding. You only need 4 kids to get to the level of laundry it sounds like you’re doing.

Yes I did. It's a great machine but had to buy a thin King comforter so it would fit. A fluffy or duvet style won't fit. Thats the only drawback, love it otherwise.

Hello SQ representative! Or are you AI? You left out how they leak from both the door and the soap dispenser. You also left out how SQ is fully awaare of this issue. SQ has terrible customer service. They initially reply like they are on it but then offer terrible or $$$ solutions you might wait weeks or months for. Buy a top loader SQ and experience fewer problems, built like a tank etc but the front loaders have 1,000's of reviews that say exactly what I just said. Happy travels botman!

It spins the clothes out much better than any other brand I have owned including, Amana, GE and Maytag. My brother lives in Peru and has had an SQ set for many years with no issues. If you have really dirty laundry, like from a blue collar job or kids that play football/baseball/soccer, or a farm/ranch, then you probably want the TC5. If you have more delicate, expensive laundry, like from an office job, then you probably want a TR model, and the TR7 is the most popular because it can be programmed to either be as gentle as hand washing or can wash for up to 90 minutes to get extra dirty stuff clean. There are three TR models that so have the same wash system but different controls and different warranties. Simple TR3, medium TR5, fancy TR7. The number in the “name” is how many years warranty.

Old post but had to add my two cents…everyone talking about their 10-15-20 year old sets still working fine is missing the point. Modern ones don’t and won’t last that long. SQ is designed to 1) be easily serviceable and 2) last longer by being a simpler design. Are they going to break? Absolutely. Are there going to be bad ones? Absolutely. They’re man made machines. The difference is in 15 years those SQ’s will still be chugging along unlike the garbage from other brands. And yes, it makes the most sense to buy a cheap dryer than pay the premium for a SQ. I have the matching SW to my TC5 washer….but I lucked up on it for $100 brand new as it was damaged in shipping- fixed it for $10. It dries as good as the 20 year old rusty or more that it replaced.

I don't own one but I've heard good things about MOST of the Speed Queen line. But the top load models do a decent job of cleaning but for the price their are other brands that do a better job and cost less. It's just that ALL of Speed Queens are built like tanks and will last a long time. If you can afford the extra cost going to a front load Speed queen will give you a better cleaning than the top load models. But they are twice as expensive.

My experience with (older) Speed Queen has been that they are the best machine for someone who just does not want their washer to break. I lived in a house that came with a Speed Queen W/D pair for several years and never had a single maintenance issue. That could have been luck, or it could have been the appliances. In spite of that, I didn't really like them. It was rough on clothes, but the quality of the wash was poor. I noticed that my new clothes looked new for longer after I moved out of there. I tried varying cycles and detergents, and just couldn't get a result I was happy with. As products, they are well built. As appliances, they didn't really serve my needs. I have heard good things about Electrolux, but don't have a ton of personal experience with them.

My mom has had the TC5 for about 2 years and wont shut up about how much better they are and how much cleaner her clothes are. I’ve noticed a difference when I’ve done laundry at her house as well. I’m sold on the washer but I don’t know that the dryer is worth the premium cost since I have less of an issue on the dryer side of things.

Maytag Commercial washer and dryer is where it's at. Don't let the name full you - it's sold by Lowes or any other Maytag dealer. It's more "old school" and is legitimately better built. No automatic anything, other than the dryer having an automatic dry sensor. And there's always Speed Queen.

This washer is better than the units built from 2018 through today. The newest Speed Queen TC5003 washers have serious control board issues. This is a mechanical timer. You also have full control of the water level unlike the newer ones.

I sell speed queen to apartment buildings for a living. That thing is a steal, manufactured 2016 scoring to the serial number. That thing will last you another 12 years and all parts can be bought direct from alliance if anything goes wrong . About the only brand that they still have techs happy to work on as they are built like tanks with fewer plastic parts than other brands. I have the same unit from 2011 in my home I got secondhand that has been in service the entire time and it’s never required a thing over the 4 years I’ve had it. That being said , try to bargain !

Speed queen is the best. 25 minute wash almost every time. Worth it. Made to last 25 years. My wife and I got one with our first house and the salesman joked it would outlast our marriage till I corrected him.

I did this, washer died, dryer was fine so I bought just a speedqueen washer (TR7). Couple of years go buy and I'm at the furniture store and thry have a speedqueen dryer in the scratch and dent room for less than half. Bought it sold the dryer we had on Marketplace. Net cost of the upgrade was like $350.

Note, I’m not the original owner. Took ownership in 2019 (it was bought in 2014). Never had any issues in operability. As for noise, It’s noisier than other newer machines from my experience, but if you have a laundry room with a door (even a thin one) it’s not an issue (our ‘90s dryer is wayyy louder). Hard on clothes is hard to say. I imagine that’s a possibility, but over the last 6 years of owning it I’ve not noticed an increased rate of failure amongst my clothes. Also worth mentioning that I’ve heard newer speed queens aren’t as good. I came here looking for some dates and further explanation, but haven’t gotten much yet. As for how well it cleans, it cleans well with the right soap. Some soaps don’t seem to work as well, but I can’t say if it’s the soap or machine. A trick I learned from a professional cleaner really helps my clothes smell fresh, but I think that’s with any machine. A bit of vinegar helps too at times.

Going back to 2005….I had a Speed Queen 30 years. Two repairs. The repairman told me it was a Bentley. Smooth well-made parts. The newer washers made outside of the USA had sharp cheap metal parts.

So when we were selling our house in 2020 someone put an offer on our house and wanted our washer (2014 Speed Queen), and dryer (2012 Electrolux) and I was like okay no problem. They were offering over asking. They ended up backing out of the deal so we got to keep them but I would have bought the non water saving Speed Queen washer (the Classic, I think) and bought a new Speed Queen dryer. Still using the same washer and dryer today so yes kind of happy we didn’t sell them. Our agent though forgot to take the appliances are included in the purchase of our house so we ended up giving away what the old owners left.

The only issue i have with speed queen is that the residential ones are slightly smaller than average for washing machines nowadays, so you may need one or two more washes depending on your needs. People also complain they are "hard on clothes" but a lot of modern clothes are disposable crap that wont survive much.

What are your opinions on GE washer?
I know this is a year later, but for anyone who stumbled into this thread I thought my information might be of use. See what appliance stores are in your area. Find a good one that sells used refurbished ones. Chances are they will have an older model washer that comes with a limited warranty. The older ones are far more reliable, and are ridiculously cheap. Like, 200 dollars cheap. If I were unable to find one, I'd probably go with a commercial speed queen top load, and cry about it after emptying my bank account. I've had the same 1994 Kenmore top loader for 4 years now, and I think I'll cry when it dies. The damn thing is reliable, serviceable, and doesn't have all the environmental restrictions that modern washers have.

I have the first model Braun hand stick blender, maybe early 90s? It still works! Several years ago I thought for sure it would break, it has a small crack, so I went on ebay and set alerts and all that to snag a good one and finally snagged one, never used, still in its box!! I haven’t had to pull it out yet, maybe I didn’t need it. I can’t understand why this thing won’t break, I’ve been wanting a new one my whole life 😂 After my old hand mixer gave out, which belonged to my mother from the 70s, I bought a Kitchenaid, it was a piece of crap and the mixers stripped out of the holders. I read reviews until I was exhausted and turned to eBay, set alerts, and sniped a professional Sunbeam hand mixer, looks almost exactly like my mom’s, only it is heavier and has a thicker cord. I’m not sure what year it is, it definitely looks like a 70s mixed someone put away and never used. I’ve used it for several years, it is a work horse, I also feel this is never going to break. I have my Vitamix, I think I bought it before 2010, maybe 2008? I got it at a fair, it had an extra pitcher for grains, but I used that for liquids just fine after the first tall pitcher finally leaked. I’ve since bought a stainless steel pitcher at Costco when they were there doing a demo. The salesperson said it would fit my old model, and it does, I love it. I think my old Vitamix could maybe grind concrete and not break. After my old Maytag washer broke after 18 years (it was after whirlpool took over, somehow it wasn’t a bad washer), I finally got a Speed Queen set. People say they are expensive, well, how many washers are you going to buy while this thing you could have had would live on and on. It’s going to outlive me, and that’s fine, it will be inherited and stay with the family.

Understanding that bean counters are what makes most products what they are today. I don't like replacing things repeatedly so I just opt for low tech. I found that the best low tech washer and dryers are called commercial non pay machines. Speed Queen would be the best brand.

Get the agitator I have one and when I wash my clothes at my bfs house (he doesn’t have an agitator) they don’t feel as clean. And I can’t use any scented products so this makes a huge difference for me, along with a 2nd rinse cycle. I’m saving up for a speed queen now

Don't buy Samsung. They are too difficult to get parts for. Until recently they only guaranteed parts for 6 years, they just up that to 10. LG gets the highest rating of all the brands for washer and dryer from repair people, outside of speed Queen. However, avoid Samsung and LG kitchen appliances like the plague--they have compressor issues.

I own a 4 year old Speedqueen washer/dryer set. They are ugly, kind of loud, have zero features but they get the clothes clean and dry have an awesome warranty (7 years) and I’ve used that warranty several times. The appliance store must not sell a lot because I recently called and the appointment coordinator insisted I only had a 1 year warranty. I had to bang it into her head that it’s a Speedqueen and it’s 7 years. After being placed on a 5 minute hold she reluctantly took back her statement about me having to verbally authorize a $225 diagnostic visit plus driver fuel usage beyond 15 miles.

Typically, people choose to replace the dryer just so it matches the washing machine. But at the end of the day, a dryer is a dryer is a dryer. They haven't gone through as intense a change mechanically over the years as washing machines and they will typically outlast a washer by at least twice the time if not longer. You can always maintenance a dryer somewhat regularly, where you can't really do that with a washer so you can really keep it alive for a long time. These days, top load washing machines last about 8-10 years, and front loads last about 6-8 years. There's always some plus/minus variance in there of course. What makes a "good" washer is going to depend on what you want. One condensed way of looking at it is that if you want a front load, look for something that's direct drive rather than belt driven. With that said, I'm a Speed Queen girlie all the way. I don't have a lot of familiarity with front loads, I was just getting out of the repair game about when those came out, but I love a Speed Queen top load and have been using one for the last 10 years. They're about as close to getting a Maytag 30 years ago (and would still be working today). Speed Queen also has one of the better warranties, especially on parts. I personally prefer my appliances without computers (so dial timers) when I can because computers are expensive to replace and can so easily be the cause of many, many issues. Now that's me. Usually when people ask me this question, they follow up by sending me a picture of a red frontload because it's pretty and asking me what I think of it. If you want to get a front load, I'd go with a direct drive Maytag or even an LG. LG parts are pretty reasonable if/when you do need repairs and while finding a servicer can be difficult depending on where you live, the actual LG support will set all that up and often end up covering things beyond warranty. Don't get a Samsung. Samsung is good at electronics. They know how to make a TV and they know how to make a phone. They do not know how to make appliances. And have problems. Their parts NLA all the time (no longer available) and the parts are not cheap when they are available. Their customer service will fight for you, but finding authorized servicers is a nightmare because most repair people don't want to deal with them, or their known issues.

Looks like the Huebsch is Speed Queen in Canada. We have had our (US model) TR-5 model for over 10 years now and have had great luck with it. I like that it has the extra rinse button. We don’t use it all do the time but it is useful to have.

If you have lots of laundry with real dirt, I’m 100% Speed Queen. If you don’t want/need an agitator and do smaller loads, I say Miele. Non agitator is better for delicates.

Most Reliable Stacked Laundry Machines?
Not mentioned vey often but I bought the SpeedQueen stack in 2018 and it’s been fantastic. It is full sized and is quite tall so you’ll need to make sure you have the space for them. They’re not fancy but they’re built like a tank and get my laundry exceptionally clean. One of the questions I had before buying was the durability of the control panel but was reassured all of the parts are the same as used in side by side and commercial units. While not in your price range as new you may be able to find a scratch and dent or gently used set.

Towels that don’t result in pulled strings
Overloading a top loader results in this exact damage. Front loaders work best with stains as there's a higher detergent to water ratio. Top loaders work better when lots of dirt needs to be held in suspension as there's more water to do so. Most modern top loader quality is absolute junk now. Only the Speed Queen TC5 is worthy of purchasing. Otherwise, get a front loader.

We bought a Speed Queen washer probably close to 10 years ago now when the washer from craigslist broke and it's still like new. I love the simplicity of the controls. We were given a modern LG or Samsung dryer a couple years ago and it has way too many controls but it works so no point in buying a new one. When it goes we'll probably get a Speed Queen though.

Get the Speed Queen TR series. The TC has an agitator that is rougher on clothes, but it is a must if you work in a dirty environment like automechanics or farming. The TR is a non-agitator that is fine for the majority of home and office environments. Also, if you are worried about mold in a front loader, don't be. Our Speed Queen front loader is over 10 years old, the difference is you need to wipe down the rubber gasket after use and to leave the door open for about a half hour to an hour to allow the gasket to dry.

I have a lot of respect for high Sierra backpacks. I wish I knew what brand garden hose I have. It's been pretty great. Imagine most that are the heavy duty rubber would be similar. About 100$ per 50 ft though. And heavy. That's about all I can think of for now

Maytag Commercial only locks the lid during the spin part of the cycle, probably for safety reasons. Regardless, Speed Queen machines are top notch no doubt and I believe are the only machines that have the barrel directly connected to the motor and therefore do not have a suspended barrel which is more likely to potentially fail. After taking a pretty deep YouTube dive into the best machines I went with Maytag Commercial sold directly from Maytag, as they have beefed up hardware throughout and come with a five year “bumper to bumper” warranty. Would have loved getting Speed Queen but couldn’t justify the additional ~$1500 for both a washer and dryer.

Top BIFL Household Items for Starting Over
I’d suggest cast iron pans and a couple good cookie sheets like Nordic ware. A few good kitchen knives. Then stainless steel pots and pans for the things you don’t want to do in cast iron. We’ve had a good experience with our all clad. A good can opener like the one by Oxo is not too expensive but will last for decades and does make life easier. A good pair of scissors. After that, personally, I’d want comfortable bedding. Sheets aren’t “buy it for life,” but high-quality sheets are definitely “buy-it-for-longer.” I like the organic cotton percale at Pottery Barn, but others on this sub like even more expensive options. Then a high quality, washable warm layer of some sort. I sleep hot and like a cotton-linen blanket because it breathes. But if you want something warmer, a quality down duvet with an allergy cover and a duvet cover over top can be kept in excellent condition for decades. And many people on this sub would suggest wool or wool blends. Since you’ll be starting fresh with bedding I’d invest in quality allergy covers for your pillows and mattress. I use two layers of covers - a waterproof one as a base layer and then a tightly woven one over that. Then mattress pad and then sheet. Mattresses aren’t ever BIFL, but that way you’ll be able to maximize its life span and minimize any allergens. As for appliances, I’m one of those people who loves my top-loading Speed Queens. They’re highly repairable tanks. I am really sorry this has happened to you, and I hope that you are able to make a new home for yourselves soon that will be comfortable and a place for you to recover from all this loss and upheaval. The TR7 is much more gentle on clothing than the TC5. I provide wash, dry, fold service out of my home using the TR7 and have had nothing not perfect results every time. It's extremely versatile and can handle any fabric, heavily soiled, delicate... You name it!

I have no idea why he deleted it but here is the comment: Washer dryers - The closest to "life" i think you are going to get is either Speed Queen or Miele (of the two the Miele hands down) . If you have the electricity to power a Schulthess, its probably the best machine one the world. Ovens - Miele Cooktops - Thermador Range hoods - Vent A Hood Dishwasher - Miele - Bosch is acceptable but not its equal. For fridges/freezers - it's probably either Sub Zero, Liebherr ,or Miele. Toaster the Dualit is hard to beat

I changed the water inlet valve a few years ago. Totally understandable considering my hard water situation. Then the timer gave up. The part was so expensive (like $300 ish?) that my part dealer suggested I buy a bottom end Inglis for $550. I looked at it and while it’s bare bones, it was so flimsy and light. The SQ is a freaking monster compared to the Inglis. It’s REALLY sturdy. I’m sure you’ll be very happy with SQ if you decide to go that route.

I had a maytag commercial. it started acting up after about a year. I moved, so i got rid of it. My girlfriend had the same washer, and it eventually started not completing cycles, not emptying the water, and a few other annoying problems. We could reset it, and/or unplug it for a few and re do the load to completion. I think we got a total of five years out of the two identical machines.. The matching dryer is doing fine. We Just got the speed queen tr7 washer. Here's hoping it's all the say it is.

Well, whirlpool bought Maytag in 2006. I wouldn't buy a new one either. But i definitely would have rebuilt that 30 year old Maytag. Even if it cost you $1k to have someone else rebuild it for you, it's cheaper than a new speedqueen, you're likely to get another 30 years out of it, and you aren't dumping something in a landfill.

I bought our TC5 washer & dryer when we bought a house 2 years ago. I've used it constantly for 2 years and washed so much in it. Giant blankets, dog beds, winter coats, loads of heavy towels etc.. They're tanks & I haven't had a single problem. I'm so glad I spent extra and went with SQ over cheaper samsung or LG. I think these might outlive me lol

I wanted to get one of these, but i didnt like how it doesnt have a manual "Fill Setting" option. I dont like auto fill. I ended up getting a speedqueen AWN432, which is essentially an older model TC5 from 2016. It lets me pick the temp and the fill level. It does pause / turn off if i open lid, but i bypassed it, so i can add detergent and clothes while the water is running / filling

Generally speaking, it’s designed for maximum uptime, meaning it’s simple to repair, somewhat minimalist (no LED laser light shows, WiFi connectivity, onboard AI, etc), the design and components are more robust, and parts are easy to get. We switched to the top-end Speed Queen set about a year ago and it’s awesome. Previously we had Samsung, and on more than one occasion a technician had to plug in a laptop to work on them and the parts sometimes were out of stock for weeks.

We bought a GE Ultra fresh. To the boards went out one week past the warranty. Not very happy. Bought a Maytag instead. The repairman said he had 4 GE with similar board problems in a month. Recommended Maytag for a moderate priced washer. More expensive model Speed Queen a lot more reliable.

You buy washing machines really on what bedding you are washing and/or if someone in your house has terribly stained items due to their career. If you want to do king size bedding regularly, the only answer to this is a bigger capacity which means you can forget the BIFL kings. This means you need to buy something around 5 cubic feet in capacity and for that, you need to pick as there is no BIFL king in that segment. Now if you are OK with going to the laundrymat once a month for that bedding, a Speed Queen of any type (Hibsch for the Canadians) and Maytag MVWP586GW or if you can find the now discontinued MVWP575GW are the hivemind BIFL washers that will crank out loads every 30 minutes until you give in. For the Speed Queen cheerleaders: Please read the reply before jumping up and down as while your king size comforter may work in yours, that is not a blanket statement (I kill myself) that every one will and you recommending someone take a $1400 chance is a pretty shitty thing to do.

Don't worry about the small basket size. The Speed Queen is a full fill washer. Most of the others are only half fill. Also, most important and harder to find is the weight capacity, a Speed Queen is about 2X more than the competition. We have the older DD7 front load, we started with a family of 5 ( 3 adults and 2 teamagers), no problems with keeping up. The Speed Queen will wash queen-size with their top liad units and king-size with their front load units. They also have a fast run time.

You’re talking about the Lorain ones where he used too much water for the load size? Despite his commentary they washed fine and if you watch his Maytag videos, you’ll see that that machine left the exact same lint on his dirty towels as the tr5 did. I’m guessing you didn’t watch his tc5 video right? He also says that it has really poor wash action and has no rollover at all. Speedqueens do not have traditional agitators that have been used forever? Their agitator designs aren’t the traditional corkscrews on any machine.

We love ours. The only problem we had was the heating element in the dryer died prematurely, but speed queen said it was a poor design that they were aware of, and the new design was much more robust. And that’s the kind of support and engineering that I appreciate.

Top loader agitators types - which is "best"?
You have the Speed Queen TR series, which isn't known for the most effective cleaning. If you had a TC5 you would see it performs much more like the Whirlpool. The direct drive Whirlpool washers are exceptional performers, and the dual action agitator is a very good agitator that has proven itself time and time again. As for your Speed Queen, the problem is the agitator is fixed directly to the wash basket. The two move in unison which is why you're noticing it doesn't clean the clothes like your Whirlpool did.

Our previous set were the legendary Whirlpool Neptunes. Previous owner was a widowed elderly female so I imagine it was only used a few times a week. We moved in five years ago and do multiple loads per day. However, they lasted 27 years! From what I’ve seen all these new products have lots of issues from pretty much every company. These have a 7 year warranty. They were also recommended by the appliance repair guys. This model has been out since 2017 so hopefully any previous issues have been addressed.

It’s tough because new appliances don’t have the longevity of products made in the 90s. We had the appliance repair guys come out and he said they were pretty much toast. They did however highly recommend Speed Queen. Part of the reason we picked them up.

I absolutely agree with you and I’ve had analysis paralysis about things I shouldn’t have. My husband is a lot more likely to just buy things and that causes issues, too. Like, we got a tv on a great deal, but it doesn’t support some apps that we use a lot. If I were the one deciding I would have known. I also think some “buy it for life” stuff is just more expensive and not that much better. For example. I bought a speed queen washer, the tr7. I love it and I was so mad at my Samsung washer breaking all the time I was willing to spend money. I have wondered over the years if spending double was actually worth it though. But I can’t really know until it lasts 20 years or not! I also had my last Bosch dishwasher go out after less than 6 years. I was pretty mad and almost went with a Kitchenaid, but got another Bosch for about $400 more. Will it really be worth it, or am I just a snob because of Reddit reviews and needing to have something other people think will last a long time? Maybe I would be better off without analyzing everything.

I was originally going to get the Maytag commercial washer. I had my heart set on that for months. Then I spoke to the owner of a clothes washing place that had rows and rows of the Maytags. He said in no uncertain terms to NOT buy one. "Half of them are out of order at any one time. Buy Speed Queen." I've had my TC5 for a year now and it is wonderful. I'm a single older guy that doesn't get clothes dirty. I suspect this washer will outlive me.

The SQ keeps you rolling a better percentage of the time, and that's why we bought 5 years ago with not a single problem since. Speed Queen Front Load Washer - worth it?
Been working just fine after all these years and clothes have come out clean. I've done tons of loads of diapers and they turn out fine and no issues or need to do any big maintenance. Since it doesn't have a true, traditional agitator, the trick is to put in less clothes in each load so that there's enough water to move around and through the fabric/clothes. It's also very quiet, which I appreciate. If you have really soiled clothes, and/or prefer the more traditional washing style with the agitator, you can look at TC models. Hope this helps.

You can absolutely get a quality used washer that could last several more decades, don’t listen to the haters. I knew a woman in my neighborhood in the early 2000s with a washer and drier she’d gotten for her wedding in the 60s. From what I’ve read a speed queen is built with very simple electromechanical parts much like the one this woman had. LG certainly makes a reliable unit for the period I’ve owned one, which is 5 years. If there’s someone in your area who can fix them, I’d go for either brand, used.

Our 32 y/o Maytag just crapped out and I asked the guy this very question (I called a guy who *may* have been able to MacGyver it back to life but to no avail). He suggested the Speed Queens (and maybe a Maytag Commercial) if we wanted a true replacement, but then went on to say that everyone on our street could go out and buy the same make and model of the other guys and some would last 20 years and some 3...so basically its a crap shoot.

Beware Maytag has connected interests with other brands like Whirlpool, Amana, and KitchenAid. In fact, Whirlpool is the main conglomerate brand. The only machines I will look at long term from my research, Miele and Speed Queen. Or else I find an industrial machine.

If you actually have money, just get a modern nice washing machine and drier. If it breaks down in 10 years, you can repair it or buy a new one. It’s not that big a deal, put aside $50/year and you’ll be fine.

I’ve had speed queen for almost 10 years and other than a failed temp switch on the washing machine it’s been great. The warranty covered the part and the repair guy said there was a batch that seemed to fail, that was 6 years ago and it’s been flawless since and they get used 4-5 times a week. My parents have GE, I think they have had them 7 years and they have had a great experience with them. It’s far more complicated but my mom loves the app which tells her when the machine is done. The only complaint they have had is that the app isn’t great and won’t work for a few weeks and then it works fine for months, it’s not a huge complaint but I would be annoyed if it was my favorite feature wasn’t working consistently.

Are you looking to buy the FF7 and the DF7? If so, don't buy the DF7. Buy the FF7 and the DR7 (the matching dryer to the TR7). The DF7 and the DR7 are exactly the same internally. Only difference is where the front panel is located. The DR7 is $7-800 cheaper and has a 2 year longer warranty. That should save you some money. Also, if your current dryer is working, just get the washer. Dryers are very simple machines and can typically last a very long time as long as you clean out the vents, the hoses and the intakes.

Those prices sound quite high. Have you shopped around much? What models are you looking at exactly? We have a Speedqueen TR7 that it looks like today is about $1500 USD, and a DR3 (base model) but I could get a DR7 for $1500 USD with free delivery. Higher end dryers offer very little difference. An extra dry sensor, some modes you will probably never use. Dryers also last longer typically than washers. We like our TR7, seems to clean fine despite the consumer reports ratings even with kids. It has a bunch of modes we never use. Remember heavy duty mode is considered normal, the eco normal mode is more to pass government efficiency testing or so our salesman told us. I think I did notice a water Increase after getting these but not a huge concern imho. Neither machine have the biggest capacity but operate pretty well when full. The dryer we have is really basic, gets the job done. I wish it had a buzzer.

I have actually purchased a Speed Queen washer (dryer forthcoming) and I have nothing bad to say about it. My old washer was a piece of junk at 3 years old and literally shook itself to death with a few unbalanced loads. I cannot say that my clothes are any less clean than they were before. However, I got the speed queen traditional top loader as I've not had good experiences with front loaders. What I can say is that the controls are dirt simple. Nothing except the basics--fine by me, I never used half the settings on the old one anyway. It certainly lives up to it's name, loads are done FAST. No issues with clothes being anything less than clean within expectations. I don't have a dirt-o-meter that will quantify the soil levels in my garments, so the nose check says we're good. It's not quiet, not handsome and when you do a full water run, it's not particularly efficient. However, it works. It doesn't walk around, it doesn't prompt me to refill my affresh every few weeks, it doesn't do anything other than clean my clothes. The only thing I don't like is that you have to pay this much for a simple, well-made machine, the likes of which were the standard affair 30+ years ago. I dislike that we're sold a bill of goods on all these overly complicated washers that do a mediocre job and are not terribly durable. So as an actual SQ owner, I'm satisfied. I would have rather not spent this much and I recognize that is a privilge I hold; reality is that a machine like this should be available at a much lower price point.

Three simple built options: Speed Queen TC5003WN Washer and DC5003WE Dryer are mechanical, commercial grade and should last the longest. Maytag (owned by Whirlpool) MVWP575GW Washer and MEDP575GW Dryer have commercial grade components and should last long. Amana (owned by Whirlpool) NTW4516FW Washer and NED4655EW Dryer should last a moderate amount of time of at least 7 years.

Top Loading Washing Machines
My last house had a small space for the washer and dryer in the ivory-colored kitchen with stainless appliances. Everything was too big or ugly. I jokingly said to the lady at Home Depot "I wish I could find the almond-colored appliances my mom had in the 90s." They have them available on order. I got Speed Queen which also comes in white. Old fashioned top load washer with no bells or whistles to fail and a sturdy dryer. I don't remember the exact price but the were not expensive.

I bought a TR7 washer in 2020 and DR7 dryer in 2023. The washer does a very poor job cleaning clothes. The lid lock mechanism also failed and because of this the unit stopped working while the washer was full of soapy water and my clothes. I was able to fix it, but the mechanism was mounted with a bunch of cheap plastic pieces that had broken. I am not happey with the TR7 and would not recommend it to anyone. The DR7 is great; no complaints there.

I bought an open box/refurb washer 4 years ago after going through two washers in 6 years. It’s the L7 or whatever the front loader is called. I paid under $1k for it and I couldn’t be happier. Also it’s nice to know it’s built in my home state and they tend to be more popular around here for part availability. I’m hoping to use this for another 20 years. That all being said, I wouldn’t pay $4k for a pair. Gas dryers are a simple appliance and I’ve never heard of one breaking. If they’re not in open view maybe go with a cheap dryer and the speed queen washer? I’m still rocking the same hand me down gas dryer that’s over 20 years old.

We decided to go for SpeedQueen washer and dryer ( top loader with agitator) after our 30 year old Maytag dryer and 7 year old Whirlpool washer wrapped out at the same time. 2 years in, I'm very happy with both the washer and dryer. I don't have any issues with clothes not being cleaned, but I typically don't use the Eco cycle, and I pretreatment stains (which I've always done). I work in a fitness center so 90% of my laundry is workout clothing, and I don't have any issues with stuff being roughed up or damaged in any way. Ours are 2008 washer and 2010 for the dryer. They got a bad name during the covid years of 2020-2022 due to supplier issues. All metal construction, not mostly plastic like the competition. Only available at independent appliance dealers, not found at big box stores.

I tested appliances for nearly 30 years. Both LG and Samsung are terribly unreliable plus the parts are expensive and hard to come by. SpeedQueen is absolutely worth the investment. I have my set since 1980 and other than having them proactively serviced every few years. I’ve never had a problem with either one. You have to calculate the life expectancy and SQ we always come out on top.

A family member got these Maytag’s and within a few months the washer went down. Had to wait a week for an authorized technician, It needed a new main computer board, part back ordered. Waited over a month for the part, technician came back and the new part turned out to be defective. I don’t recall how long for the second one to arrive but the whole thing was quite inconvenient for them. I’m sure stuff like this can happen with many brands but just wanted to share their experience. I’ve had SQ TR7/DR7 pair for almost 2 years now. No issues at all.

Their front loads aren’t great. They built their reputation on their top loads, which do a perfectly fine job of washing clothes and last forever. We had some issues with some spotting, but once we started dissolving our detergent in the water before adding clothes to it, it’s been just fine. That plus some other well known laundry tricks for how to get specific stains out (peroxide on blood, for example) and we’ve been very happy.

I don’t have the front loader. Their reputation is really built on their top loaders, which I do have. They’re a lot cheaper. I went with a speed queen because in the last 10 years, I’ve seen my mom go through three machines (two LGs and a Samsung). In the last 5, I’ve seen my brother go through a brand new machine, my sister in law go through a brand new machine, and my own machine died. None lasted longer than 5 years and all had multiple “repairs”, which didn’t really do the trick. It took a little tweaking getting used to using a top loader. We really need to dissolve the detergent before adding clothes, otherwise we get some white spots. Other than that? No complaints. We’ve had it for about 3 years now. It’s easy to clean, it does the job, and our clothes have largely held up well. On the whole though, I can’t judge it until it’s past 5-10 years old and still performing without any servicing. So I’ll let you know in a few years. Laundry machines, appliances, and HVAC are areas I’ve been burned on already in my life. I’m willing to spend a little more to guarantee myself some more peace of mind. I don’t want to be spending my Sundays at a laundromat or throwing out all my food or sitting in an 85 degree home because a key system broke in my house.

No. Not one bit. I had a top of the line LG before that and so many issues. We had ONE problem with the washer in the last nine years with our speed queen, and it’s because a little toddler sock got pushed between the basket and washer wall when laundry was being dumped in and got sucked into the impeller. My speed queen dryer did finally have a heating element die a few weeks back, a $300 part, but again, I can’t be too mad. We do 3-4 loads a day, minimum, every day. The capacity and consistency of the washer and dryer have been great. And they really weren’t more expensive than the comparable capacity models we had from LG (and Whirlpool, before that). As a large family mom who cloth diapered for years, I cannot praise my SQ highly enough.

The point of the sub is not really "what does the job the best", it's a balance what lasts the longest and does a good job. For the video you posted, that is specifically the model that most people tell you to avoid. Just get the standard TC5, they're well documented as being great washers that last forever. I would MUCH rather have a machine that does 90% of the job but lasts 15+ years, than replace a 100% machine every 2-4 years.

When our washer/dryer died a few years back, the appliance repair guy highly recommended buying Whirlpool or Maytag bc the parts are less expensive and they are easy to repair. He recommended staying away from Samsung and LG and all the extra digital bells and whistles (more parts to fail). Terrible Whirlpool washer experience
That means that Bosch washers are designed to run for 5000 washes. At an average of 8 washes a week, a Bosch washer is designed to run 12 years. Whereas a Speed Queen is designed to run for 10400 washes @ 8 washes a week comes out to 25 years. It means that the Speed Queen is more durable and longer lasting than the Bosch. If the opposite were true, then you would see Bosch washers in laundromats and not Speed Queen washers.

Pretreat, use quality detergent, and pick the proper cycle and you’ll likely have no issues. I will add that they’re both all stainless steel inside so no worrying about chipping enameled drums. It’s also noticeably heavier than other units because of the heavy duty components and some liquid automatic balancing thing. I’ve never once had to adjust a load because it was off balance when spinning. That really surprised me with a queen size comforter.

I use heavy duty as my regular wash and the delicate wash for my performance fabric stuff. I also use the pre wash and extra rinse settings most of the time. I only started using the prewash settings when some of my gym shirts weren’t feeling so clean but those get washed on the delicate cycle with my socks and boxers so not very surprising. All is good now with the added option cycles. I use Mollys Suds and Persil for my powdered detergents.

If you read the sub closely, there are no BIFL brands not named Speed Queen (ie Alliance Laundry). LG is the best of the bad bunch where their top loaders can last 7+ years. You could easily have search for used/refurbished Speed Queen front loads on FB Marketplace or laundromat distributors. Then you could have paid a handyman to 'stack' any branded dryer on top of the Speed Queen front load. I wasn't the original purchaser, but in 2017, my washer went out and we got lucky with a hair salon having a property auction since they were going out of business. Got their washer and dryer and it is still very dependable. Today. The dryer belt squeaks a bit when it's extra cold outside, and the air makes it down the exhaust pipe. But outside of that, no complaints.

Yes Speed Queens are BIFL. The top loader Speed Queen TC5 is the one everyone raves about. Their front loader is the FF7. Speed Queens are manufactured to last at least 10400 cycles which is roughly 25 years at 8 loads a week. The reason why Speed Queen is confident saying this is because their TC5 and FF7 are, internally, exactly the same as their commercial models that are sold to laundromats. Laundromats can typically get 10-12 years out of their top loaders at 3 cycles a day. This equates to be 11K-13K cycles over the lifetime of the machine which proves the claim that Speed Queens will last 10400 cycles (aka 25 years). Note, at this point, the machine is probably still functional but for business purposes (more frequent breakdowns and cost of repairs), they retire the machine and get a new one.

This is very wrong. SQs generally have no extra capacity vs other brands. My top loader is smaller capacity than most machines and it was something I debated when buying it (it has been fine but I wouldn't wash anything larger than a medium queen quilt or king sheets). Maintenance is extremely low. I've had mine 11+ years with minimal maintenance. My appliance repair guy takes all the serial info on your appliances the first time he comes out, to make it easy for future calls. He saw the SQs and said "ah, we don't need to even take those numbers, they never break down." The top loaders I have does use more water. Energy seems comparable but i don't have exact numbers in front of me.

Speed Queen has their own stack unit that is very expensive. It's call the SF7. It's around $4400. That's why I would recommend purchasing the Speed Queen FF7 washer, and then purchasing a different brand dryer to 'stack' ontop of the FF7. You will have to go to an appliance shop that has their own install/repair team and ask them. Alternatively, you can create a 'shelf' over the FF7 where you can place the dryer on top of the shelf. Finally, you can go and search for a used/refurbished SF7. I do see them from time to time on FB Marketplace and laundromat distributors. Unfortunately, if you need stacked you will have to pay a lot for BIFL. If you're income is limited, then perhaps go with an LG unit. That should last you 7-10 years, but it's certainly not BIFL. You will be back to buying another appliance then.

For washing machine, get a Speed Queen. Can typically find used/refurbished Speed Queen top/front loaders on Craigslist, FB Marketplace and laundromat distributors for $300-$550+. For dryer, get the simplest used dryer you can find that works. Speed Queen dryers are built like tanks but the quality gap between dryers is not as large as the quality gap between a Speed Queen washer and everything else. For dishwashers, the consensus is Bosch. Get the 300/500/800 series. Do not get the 100 series as it's a step down in quality. The problem with review sites is that many of them make money off of the product links. So they are heavily biased. Consumer reports does good reviews, but they fail with Speed Queen because they only test the Speed Queen ECO setting which everyone says not to use.

Speed Queen TC5 Washer
I'm pretty happy with it. It washes faster and better than the units I've had over the last several years. Unfortunately they have the same faults all the cheaper washers suffer from - they don't want us to use water. Considering the thing us over $1k, you'd think you would have more freedom to choose how you want to wash your clothes. It also beeps every time you change a setting, start a cycle, and finish a cycle. Not just a beep. A piercing, loud beep. If there's a way to shut it off, I haven't found it yet. All in all I'm happy. I just hope it lives up to the hype.

Bosch seems to be the consensus for dishwasher. We ended up with a KitchenAid since Bosches were back ordered for months back in 2021, and it’s already given me a couple of issues. They look very similar on paper but I’d stick with the Bosch if you’re able to swing it. Used may be a good idea if you have an idea on its condition. I do think used is fine for washer/dryer, especially if you can get Speed Queen. A simple unit without a lot of features or electronics is likely good for many more years.

Washer and Dryer repair or replace
The only BIFL, repairable washers are Speed Queen. Dryers are much more simplistic and should last between 10-15 years as long as you do the preventative maintenance. At least once a year you should clean/vacuum in the intake to the dryer, clean the duct hose and then clean the vent that goes from the inside to the outside of the house. Take your money and go and look for a used Speed Queen on Craigslist, FB Marketplace, used appliance stores and laundromat distributors. Getting a refub unit from a laundromat distributor is a great way to both save money and get a reliable washer.

The Maytag commercial is available at Costco Canada, I have not seen Speed Queen available everywhere in Canada, although the last time I checked was a couple of years ago. Failing that, look at front loaders with +5 years warranty, but expect to change it eventually instead of fixing it.

I have a SQ and really enjoy it - it actually cleans my clothes. I agree with those who say you might be overfilling the drum with clothes, if you have crusty clothes coming out of the wash. Also, I really like the German Persil powder - way better than the American stuff and smells clean, not overly fragrant. I get it on Amazon when it gets to a fair price. Totally worth it. You don’t even need very much. I do put the detergent in first and then run some water before I put the clothes in. And I would definitely ask your appliance ppl about why your towels would be torn up - that’s not the norm. Good luck!

This is not true. Most top loaders are not true direct drive, even if they are advertised as such (looking at you Amana). Even some of the direct drives still have the tub suspended from nothing more than springy cables that bounce around like a wobbly top. To feel the experience, go to a big place like RC Wiley and wiggle the drum on a speed queen and then compare that wiggle to any other top loader. The difference is remarkable. The speed queen of today is pretty much the Maytag of 1985.

Speed queen: TV2 vs TC5
Nah same washer with different cycle options. TC5 also has manual controls and same size and both are Classic wash. TV2 has 8 cycle options vs TC5 has 6, but has one more temperature and deep fill. Really just depends on what options you prefer. I only question if no deep fill for TV2 should be concerning, but sounds like you're happy!

23 yo Maytag washer leaking oil
MAV is the Norge design which Maytag released sometime in the 1990s, after they bought Magic Chef. If it's leaking oil, then it is almost certainly the transmission, which is no longer available new. Probably not worth fixing unless you want to take on the job. These Norge based machines are not very service friendly. I wholeheartedly disagree with "it's not worth repairing after 8 years". There's so many machines older than that out there which only need simple repairs and could last decades longer. I would never trash a machine solely because of age; the new ones fail in droves long before the old ones call it quits. Parts availability is often the number one killer of these otherwise incredible machines, but in the case of this Norgetag, I personally wouldn't bother trying to fix it. Go for a Speed Queen TC5.

I love my Speed Queen. I’m happy to have a washer again that actually lets you wash in HOT water, unlike those HE crap machines that give you warm water if you want hot. I washed some very soiled clothes at a laundromat because I isn’t really want them in my machine. They still smelled after coming out of the washer. I tooth them home and put them in my Speed Queen and they came out CLEAN and without odor. My home machine cleaned much better than the laundromat commercial machines.

I wash almost everything on permanent press. Seems to be the sweet spot on not being too rough or too gentle. I have TR-7, not sure if you have the same model. Laundry detergents in general have gotten too gentle. I think only tide and persil really work. You might need more in a high water washer than you did in your front loader.

I’ve had mine for about 8 months and they’re efficient, clean my clothes well, and dry in a reasonable time. You may be having hard water or detergent issues. I run clothes on cold delicate and towels on warm delicate and have no issues.

I have a speed queen. My towels are 30 years old and I don’t have any trouble with them coming out clean. My water heater is turned up to about 140°, and I use hot water. I use a little bit of tide detergent, the unscented version. I usually put it on a soak cycle. I like my towels to soak in the hot water. Then in 20 minutes I go down and reboot it to warm water wash and cold water rinse. I put one cup of vinegar in the warm water. That gets the soap out. Seriously, I have no idea why your towels would be coming apart.

Speed queens are not great at washing with the water saving feature. (I’ve not actually found a washer long term). I love my SQ! But it does require you to use a bit more water. Mine is set to heavy duty with extra rinse. I adjust the water level manually to make sure the clothes get covered. I’ve never had issues with these settings. On eco mode with auto water, I have seen more than once clothes coming out with powered detergent on them. Or not cleaned enough.

Can’t believe it cost that much. Ours was the same price as other brand machines. Had a similar problem so we changed the detergent. Play with cycle settings and temperature. We’ve finally hit the sweet spot. Aside from the smaller load size required, we love ours

Odd. I’ve had my top loader with agitator for 15 years. I wash all kinds of things from delicates to towels to bedspreads/blankets. I use the various cycles & temperatures, but mostly light cycle/cold water. I use oxiclean or forever new for delicates. I’ve never had anything tear. Maybe you have a lemon. You should contact the store where you bought your machine or the manufacturer.

10 years into my Speed Queen washer with zero issues. Wife and 2 daughters so it’s like running a B&B with towels. Laundry 5 times a week for sure. Previous Samsung bit the dust in 3 years. I was so pissed. It broke every year and cost me $ (ok the first one was under warranty). I was so happy to curb that POS.

It took me a year to figure out I never washed anything on warm or hot even though I had turned the temperature knob to the desired setting. On my Speed Queen, you also need to turn the other knob to any other setting besides “Normal Eco.” That setting only uses COLD water. Perhaps that’s your issue and adjusting your knobs will help. I LOVE my top loading Speed Queen (purchased new 6 years ago.)

Our SQ are great, and we don't have to rebalance the load every 10 minutes. Sounds like you are overfilling and maybe using wrong detergent. Before adding clothes, READ detergent container and put in the required amount in the bottom of the tub, NO MORE. The scoops usually are marked with a line about 1/3 of the way up that is for a regular load. Then add clothes : drop in clothes, do not pack down, till just below top of drum, not packed to level of lid. Set full level to large load, extra rinse. If that load comes out better, you are getting somewhere. The laundry scoops that come in detergent are designed to make you use more by thinking you have to fill them. Do not fall for that.

Have used the tc5 for close to five years now. It cleans everything I have thrown at it with no problem. Never had the problem you are describing. Regularly wash dog bedding and towels used to clean muddy dog paws. The washer gets the dirt stains out no problem. We use Tide and tide pods for the detergent though as I have found the eco/weaker type of detergents to not clean as well for the dog stuff.

People like them because they’re simple, mechanical, have replaceable parts, and can be repaired. It’s tough to find appliances and such today that are built for longevity rather than trying to fit them with all the latest technology. It’s not a perfect washer and dryer but damn if they don’t destroy my old Samsungs

Washer/Dryer recommendations. Narrowed it down to Speed Queen or LG
The original basic version, not the more expensive digital version. Reason? No lid lock and less to go wrong. It's an amazing washer, night and day better than anything from China/Taiwan. Didn't get the dryer yet as my old American dryer from the 1970s is still going strong and drys things much better and faster than any of the newer dryers. If it ain't broke, don't try to fix (or replace) it. If any of my old 1970s appliances have issues, I will get them repaired instead of replacing them. Almost all of the new appliances are crap unless one spends a fortune on the best stuff coming from countries other than China and Taiwan and even then, you have to spend a lot more for the top of the line versions with the very long warranty periods.

If you want a top load washer that washes just as well, get the Speed Queen TC5. Keep your existing dryer until it fails. No need to get rid of a perfectly functioning dryer. It's not like a new dryer is going to dry your clothes faster.

Most washers and dryers with bigger drums that advertise there capacity are only supposed to be filled half way. Speedqueens are ment to be completely filled. Capacity is one of those marketing shell games thatnis not always what it seems. We made the switch to speedqueen a few months afo and I had the same concerns. My family’s laundry used to take us all day. Now we are done by noon. It is faster and while the drum is smaller you can totally pack it and everything get clean

A new set will last that long IF you buy a speed queen set. They will cost 2x the price of a normal washer and dryer, but everyone raves about them and says they’re worth it. Go to any laundromat and there’s typically commercial grade speed queens.

Speed Queen TR7 DR7. Buy once, cry once.
Speed queen is smaller than my Samsung. After I was sick of the front load Samsung that was a nightmare. I got a cheap GE top load set because I was done with the front load. Well, the GE wasn’t very good on the clothes and had too many repair repairs over the years. Sick of buying washers and dryers. I bought a speed queen. I feel like my clothes feel clean, They feel like they’re in better condition, it just works perfectly. I can’t see enough about it. Even though the tub is smaller, you can put more clothes than I ever put in anything else. And that is because you can stack it all the way to the top and the water literally fills to the very brim. Now I’ve only had it since this year so I don’t know if there will be any warranty items but if so, I have a seven year warranty with my TR7 and DR7.

Unpopular Opinion: "BIFL" as an excuse for overspending
Interesting perspective to see BIFL as a shopping list for wants vs. needs. I've only used it as another data point when shopping for something that I need to replace. So many of the product review sites also just seem to be marketing. It's hard to find real, honest reviews for quality, durable products that hold up to constant use (e.g. a dishwasher or washing machine). Subreddits and sites for repairing things I am buying also provide great information. What product is going to have replacement parts at reasonable prices and be relatively easy to fix? Our washing machine is 18+ years old and will likely be our next appliance to replace. I just did some maintenance on it because it is a quality product, and I prefer to keep it until I have no choice but to replace it. It is an LG Tromm, and I'll likely stick with LG, but I have also researched Speed Queen. LG has seemed to maintain their quality at a more reasonable price than Speed Queen. My KitchenAid mixer is also coming to its end days. KitchenAid has seemed to sacrifice quality in their recent products. So, I will likely replace it with an Ankarsrum mixer when the time comes.

Speed Queen makes most of their own parts themselves, from US subcomponents. Electronic stuff imported tho.
