  How can a company continue to make money if their product lasts forever?

  Let's think of a better example, Stanley. Their cups are BIFL, and they sell replacement parts (straws, lids, etc.) If you need it. They have expanded their product line, done collabs with other brands, and made infinite color options to keep up with trends. Stanley is a 100+ year old company that actually changes with the market and makes a good product people want to buy. Also, selling replacement parts ensures they can keep the customer for life and builds a good reputation.

  Sturdy reusable water bottles should be a buy one and be set for life (original Stanley thermoses, Klean Kanteen) but in our lovely consumption based society people want a new style of mug or bottle, a new color, etc. I saw a headline in that le creuset quality had gone down because people want to collect every color.

  Once upon a time I got a knock off, stainless steel, insulated, thermos type of carafe (the ones where the top is also a mug) from AAA. I've never had anything work as well. It kept my tea STEAMING for 8+ hours. The worst part is no one could tell me where it was from. I called the office where I got it AND corporate, to no avail. The item itself was completely unsettled. It was a sad, sad day when I dropped it and the plastic lid broke. I could never find a replacement part. My Stanley replacement also works great but there was something about that AAA one that made me so happy.

  I work with truck drivers, and their boss puts a lot of thought into gifts. My personal favorites are: Yeti coffee mug, that's 4 years old and is stained on the inside, but otherwise perfect 2 different Stanley water bottles. They're not my dailies anymore because we got a bigger off brand water bottle that I prefer. Carhart winter coat. 2-3 years old and seriously the best thing I've gotten. RTIC lunch box. This is getting dirty but other than that, looks good for almost a year of near daily use. This isn't branded because boss didnt order in time for that, but still free

  What water bottle is the best for Anti mold?

  Use any stainless steel bottle you want. Kleen Kanteen has been mentioned. A friend has one and it seems like a good option. Personally I use a larger Stanley thermos for tea at work. After my shift I rinse it out with clear water and give the cap a quick wash with a sponge and soapy water. It doesn’t take much longer than loading up the dishwasher. Every so often, especially if the inside gets patina from the tea I put a small spoonfull of dishwasher powder in the thermos and fill it up with boiling water. Leave it over night, rinse with clean water in the morning, it’s as good as new. What I‘m trying to say is, you don’t have to worry about mold too much if you give it a quick rinse every evening and the dishwasher powder like once a week or so. Having to use you dishwasher every evening (especially if it’s only for the bottle) will be a bigger hassle and more expensive over time.

  I have a few Nalgene, a Stanley-style insulated cup that accommodates drinking either with or without a straw, and a Corkcicle screw top that I received as a gift many years ago. I use the Stanley-style in my car while running errands. The Corkcicle gets filled and put on my bedside table every night, and the Nalgene is usually what I use everywhere else. I also have one glass flip-top bottle sheathed in silicone that was my water bottle in the office when I was working.

  Stanley Thermobottle. Best purchase ever if you drink warm bavereges daily. Standard Swiss army knife and the small version for you keychain. Good mittens, were you can fold the mitten top back and habe a normal glove with cut out finger tips underneath. Jack Wolfskin has those. Also a retractable part for your thumb.

  Yeah, if she wants the “throw it in a bag and it won’t leak” then you’re looking at the classic Stanley mug linked above. If she wants the easy to sip lid, then Yeti has a couple options. If she wants “fits in a cup holder in the car” then I think the classic Stanley one is out but some of the 16oz yetis will work and you have your choice of colors. Both brands will stay hot (or cold) for quite a few hours.

  Finding a handled thermos that actually holds up is harder than it should be. The handle ripping off is what usually kills them. You want a single welded stainless body where the handle is part of the metal and not some plastic bracket glued on later. A proper vacuum‑insulated body feels like one solid chunk. If it flexes or creaks, it’s junk. Make sure the inside is real 304 stainless. A lot of cheap ones hide plastic under a “metal” spray coat, and that stuff cracks after a few heat cycles. Since she drops things, look for thicker steel. Around the 0.6 to 0.8 millimeter range survives dents without killing the vacuum layer. Wide mouth lids with full metal threads last way longer than the quarter‑turn plastic collars. Zojirushi makes handled models that fit this kind of build quality, and some of Stanley’s fixed‑handle classics are still decent. Both come in loud colors if you dig around the camping lines. Skip anything with a rubber comfort grip. Those peel, trap moisture, and eventually rot out the metal underneath.

  Does anyone have a recommendation for a single cup thermos flask?

  Most single cup flasks die at the lid. The seal gives out long before the steel body does. The usual failure is a thin silicone gasket that warps after a few heat cycles. Look for a lid that uses a replaceable O ring instead of a molded one piece seal. You can clean it, swap it, and keep the thing going. You also want double wall stainless with a welded base. A lot of cheap ones hide a glued bottom plate, and that glue eventually lets go. A wide mouth is fine, but only if the threads are metal. The plastic thread inserts that get press fit into steel crack the first time the bottle takes a hit. If you want something that actually lasts, Zojirushi’s SM SC bottles and the Stanley Classic Trigger Action are the usual workhorses. Both use solid gaskets you can replace. Skip anything with an auto locking sip lid. Those little spring mechanisms gum up with coffee oil and once that happens the whole lid is trash.

  Is there anything you're convinced is "the cheaper the better"?

  Costco brand hiking wool socks, You get 4 of those sucker for the price of 1 pair of Darn Tough socks. Also generic insolated cups, I've watched numerous video where people temp test all the brands (Stanley, Yeti, Owala) and almost always the premium and generic brands are within a couple degrees of each other in the 24 hour cold test. I don't think a couple degrees efficiency is worth the 2x-3x price tag on a lot of these items.

  Are you talking about this style? I have an old one like this. No pour-through stopper, just a solid screw on cap for the insulated part (threads inside the neck), plus the drinking cup, which screws onto the threads on the outside. This is the updated classic with a stopper, instead of a cap, like mine has. This is what I think of when you say two sets of threads. My grandfather had the exact same setup in a 1 qt model, 50 years ago.   Stanley Cup. I had no idea it was a trend when I bought it. I was struggling to stay hydrated and went to REI with a checklist of what I wanted (insulated, holds at least a liter, has a straw and a handle, fits in cup holder, and, most importantly, very easy to clean). I was amazed that I found one that checked all my boxes! I still love it! Plus I love Stanley as a company for making durable products that last a lifetime!

  O man. I am an Eagle Scout. This is something I know about. So that set of threads is actually for another outer cup. I have a model that even has a finger handle like a coffee cup version. That being said a lot of those cups didn’t make it as long as the thermos. There was a replacement handle that was made for a latern and some other things (can’t remember what else). I saw them in the scouts and heard it enough I had to look it up repeatedly when the internet matured, as this was an urban legend that Stanley designed it with holding a latern in mind. You just brought back a lot of good memories. Thank you.

  I'm loyal to Stanley. Pretty indestructible, I put it in the dishwasher in a pinch, doesn't get banged up even with heavy use, holds 40 oz which is about perfect for me. I had an Owala but it got dinged up so easily and when I'd tip it up to get the last bit the straw couldn't get I'd spill it on myself.

  In college, a Nalgene. For my first “big kid” job, I had one those amazingly annoying light up Bluetooth bottles. I appreciated the reminders and the fluid intake tracking. Others at work were distracted by the sudden flashing. Now? I have a free Simple Modern tumbler from a work trip with hot/cold lids and straws. I lost my one Owala somewhere in the house - I love that one for throwing it in a bag and rolling out of the house. My true ride or die though? 1/2 gallon Stanley jug with the flip straw. Makes a great growler too. 🍺 tl;dr: I didn’t go overboard; still too many even with this list. My stickered heavy-ass Stanley has been the best.

  I graduated highschool in 2013 and remember being one of the only kids with a water bottle I carried all day. We didn't even have working water fountains when I was there and the school didn't install water bubblers until a few years after I graduated, so if you wanted more water you basically had to pack it all yourself 😭 My go tos are usually a 32oz Nalgene and my Hydroflask if I want something insulated. I have nerve issues in my hands and drop & knock over my big hydroflask all the time and it works just fine. Has lasted me 2 baseball seasons being lugged around in my car and baseball bag and occasionally getting knocked over onto concrete in the dugout and still works perfectly. I think Yeti makes great water bottles too if you want insulated. Yeti cups are indestructible and if you register your products on their site they'll send you free stickers which I just think is neat. I tend to buy mine at TJ Maxx. I always find Yeti cups and Hydroflasks there for cheaper than retail. Also starting to see Stanley cups there now that the trend has died down a bit. I don't own one, I think those giant stanleys just look ridiculous and you can't fit them in a regular water bottle pocket of a backpack. But I did put a Stanley 8oz flask and their french press coffee maker on my Xmas list this year. And I have a Stanley thermos which is notorious for being BIFL.

  i switched from a 46 oz yeti rambler to a 40 oz stanley tumbler 3 years ago and i love the stanley. i know it’s basic and trendy but it fits in my cup holder and all the pieces come apart for easy cleaning, including the seal around the lid. my yeti leaked if i had it sideways so i wasn’t crazy about that with the type of lid they come with. obviously the stanley will leak too if you tip it sideways but since it fits in my cup holder i don’t have to worry about that.

  What do you need the newest and greatest for? Just be a few generations behind and replace it if it breaks with the next thing. I'm still using my Bodum travel mug from like 2012 for warm drinks and my Nalgene for water, and when that breaks it's on to Hydroflask, and then Yeti mugs, and then those goofy Stanley cups, and if I'm still alive then I've no doubt they'll have made many exciting new products I can buy.

  I’m not an absolute loyalist but I have one of each type and rotate them by use. Stanley cup is my daily driver around the house, I find it more convenient/encouraging for me to consume water. Hydroflask is for times when I want my drink to stay cold/hot for a while. And the classic Nalgene for everything else. I have some of the others that I’ve collected of the years but those only get pulled out for overflow.

  They’re literally all the same to me. Stanley keeps things coldest the longest. Owala and Hydroflask are very practical and won’t leak. I am also very happy with a mason jar and a lid! But that is breakable and not insulated. I have chronic nausea and very cold water helps with that, so I do like to have one that stays cold because I don’t have easy access to ice where I work.

  That’s the dad thermos. He got his in the 70s and it was still like new in 2003 when I moved out. That thermos will outlive me.

  So I had a USA built Stanley thermos from the 1990s and it had lost vacuum. I took a couple of pics and submitted warranty claim. The sent a new (now made in china like all insulated stainless) with no hassle.

  I have to spend $150 at amazon this week

  \- **Bag:** Timbuk2 Classic Messenger bag. I've had mine for 6 years used as a full-time commute/computer bag, occasional range bag, then as a diaper bag for a few years, then as my fishing bag most recently. The only issue I've had is a broken buckle but that was my fault closing it in a car door. **- Multi-tool:** Leatherman multi-tools: My dad had the same one 20+ years before he died. I've been using a Free p4 model for 4ish years with no issues through a lot of both hard use and daily use type tasks, and very little care (re-tightened screws twice and apply a little oil occasionally). **- Knife:** Essee Izula 2, affordable, great lifetime warranty, small enough to EDC and for delicate tasks, tough enough to baton wood, the blade shape and size make it very versatile. Does require basic care (dry and oil) and you may not like the sheath that comes with it. **- Wool blend Socks:** My smart wools have lasted me like 5 years, my wigwams are my most comfortable, my darn toughs are also great. **- Good underwear:** My ExOfficios have lasted seemingly forever. I've been married 9 years today and I'm pretty sure a few of the sadder pairs in my dresser are almost that old. Saxx are incredibly comfy but don't last. **- Light Jacket:** I've had a Patagonia Jacket since 2009 that is one of my more used jackets, patagonia repaired the main zipper two years ago for free/cheap. Jack Wolfskin wind shirt/jacket, also had since 2009 and it's been pretty brutally treated through Military stuff, backpacking, a short stint doing heavy pipefitting, and a lot of hunting/fishing. I've literally just partially retired it in the last few weeks for a Helikon-Tex Woodsman Anorak, I'll still keep the wolfskin for a farm work layer until it completely dies. **- Wallet:** I've had a Rogue Industries front pocket wallet as my only wallet since 2015, the only reason I need to replace it after 10 years is because I got the nylon one instead of the leather, pretty sure the leather would last at least 15-20 years. **- Water bottles/thermos:** Classic Nalgene bottles are very rugged and last forever. Classic Stanley thermos, it will take a house fire to kill it. My insulated Kleen Kanteen has also taken tremendous abuse and clumsiness.

  I have my dad’s from 1952. It went with him all over Germany while he was stationed there 1952-55. Husband has one that was his dad’s and maybe his grandfather’s before that. It was made in the 60s. Both were used hard for years and both look practically new except for the scratches on the cap and the bottom. And fwiw, both have been tested for lead and are negative (dry and with hot water sitting for 6 hrs). No rust, either, except one of the handle hinge things.

  I have a Yeti and 90's Stanley. The Stanley wins for heat retention. I have a 2020's 1/2 gallon Stanley that's better than both of them by a lot. I think a larger thermos holds better than a smaller one even if made the same.

  Stanley Ice Flow. It's great you did all this research, but it all boils down to what you need and want. I needed one that fits in a standard vehicle cup holder and was leak proof in some way. I also wanted one that was 30 oz, holds ice for at least 24 hrs, and didn't have a straw. The only one I could find that matched all this was the Stanley Ice Flow, and I am 100% satisfied with it for all the reasons I specified.

  The old green Stanley has been the measure of this for decades. The one note, if you really want your beverage to stay warm fill the thermos with hot water 10 or 15 minutes before your beverage is ready. Then replace the hot water with your beverage. Preheating the thermos will keep it hot much longer. The same is true for coolers. Put ice in your cooler the night before you go out. A pre-chilled cooler will hold ice much longer. Apparently Yeti makes a thermos too but I'm sure you pay for the privilege...

  Why are we allowing posts that are not in the spirit of BIFL?

  I used to think the same. Usually just machined steel and a handle, right? how could you go wrong? I still have my grandfather's craftsman screwdrivers, wrenches, estwing hammers, stanley chisels, and a few pliers that were made in the late 50s to early 70s and those are the quality and standard I expect. I broke a diagonal cutter of his (craftsman) and went to Lowe's to warranty it. After a fair amount of bitching, the cutters they were going to give me were not of the same quality. The hinge was not as tight. The machine finish was rough. It was just not to the standard I expected. I chose to keep the broke ones (I was using them as a pry bar and snapped a tip off - so still functional but not ideal). The tradespeople (and total hacks) I've worked along side have noticed a consistent decline in quality too. As soon as a big company or private equity buys into a brand - quality goes to shit. I coddle my grandads tools for sentimental reasons. And "replaced" them with Wera, Vessel, Wiha, Knipex, and Bondhus tools. But your average Joe typically wont spend the money for those brands. I use my tools everyday. So my perspective and needs are different from a DIYer/home owner. Am I just bitter and angry about minutiae? Probably. But I've broke enough (newer) craftsman and Stanley tools to never buy them again. So you're probably right if you only use your tools for a job/project here and there.   I like my Stanley Quick Flip. It does not have a taper at the top so it is always clean when it comes out of the dishwasher. It also does not have a stupid straw which I refuse to clean and to think is generally unhygienic. It is stainless steel and very easy to open with one hand. Despite having dropped it several times it is still going strong for me!

  Almost any "name brand". Wera, Wiha, Bahco, Bosch, Stanley... there are differences in quality and design between brands, but for general DIY, you just want to upgrade from "screwdriver shaped object" to "actual screwdriver with hardened tip". People who use them every day will have strong opinions that you don't need to care about. But the really cheap stuff is just worthless. Make sure you are using a bit that fits tightly in the screw head with no wobble. Try a size up and down. Make sure the screwdriver is exactly in line with the screw, not bent off to one side. Apply plenty of pressure when turning - the harder it is to turn, the more pressure you need into the screw. At your maximum effort, you should be putting a lot of your bodyweight into it. Drill pilot holes, unless you are screwing into something very soft. You can look up a guide for how to correctly size pilot drills. You don't need a nice drill, or a cordless drill, but spend money on name-brand drill _bits_. Make sure you are not trying to screw directly into masonry. There are various sorts of plugs and anchors, depending on the wall type. Again, lots of guides that are better than anything I'll write.

  I think some of the people in the comments haven't experienced *just* how shitty a screwdriver can be lol. A month or so ago someone handed me their brand new junk dollar-store screwdriver to do a task for them, and the tip crumbled within two screws. I finished the job with my multi-tool, bent the screwdriver in half (yes, it was that cheap) so it couldn't hurt anyone ever again, and bought them some new tools. Wera or Wiha (different brands, similar names) are both solid choices, especially when looking for smaller sizes. Here in the US market, Tekton has become my favorite recently for hand tools - check their Outlet section and you can get good US-made tools for very reasonable prices. Also US market, find your local Habitat for Humanity ReStore and you can probably find some vintage Craftsman or Stanley for a few bucks. Handle design is very much a matter of personal taste. If you're looking to spend big money on tools, there may be a tool store in your area that caters to professional tradespeople that carries all the premium brands and you can try them in person. And yep, your curtain rod probably came with screws made of recycled bubblegum and cheese, cheap screws get cheaper every year. Unfortunately it means you either need to maintain a whole hardware store of good-quality screws or use very careful technique.

  I'm probably going to get hate for this, but I'd have to say my Stanley water bottle....you know, the one with the handle. I asked for one a couple years ago for Christmas in my favorite color. I have religiously used it since I got it. I commute for work, and I am always running around so when I saw they had a handle on the side, I thought it would be perfect when I am driving. Since I've been using it, I drink a lot more water (it's insulated and I LOVE cold water) and notice my gas has gone down dramatically. Maybe only like it because of the color, who knows. But it was a game changer for me none the less.

  Best Dentproof Waterbottle

  Try the Stanley Ice Flow. I’ve dropped it several times without any serious dents. Also, I think it’s the shape of Hydro Flasks that cause problems. All of my bulbous ones are severely dented, but I have a 24oz HF bottle that is more cylindrical, without rounded corners. That one is relatively dent free.

  Water bottle recommendations?

  My original wide mouth 32oz Hydroflask is 9 years old. I liked their old flip lid a lot, but their new one leaks the tiniest bit so I just switched to their straw flip lid. I have a Stanley Quencher (30 oz) that keeps water really cold but I only use it in the car or at home as I think it would be a pain to carry all day. I got this as a gift from my work and I probably wouldn’t have bought it otherwise but it really does keep water cold for a long time.

  Water bottle recommendations?

  So I spent WAY too much time on this and made a spreadsheet and YT video about this! It compares 22 bottles, and you can rank 9 criteria based on which are most important to you to get your own personalized list of recommended bottles. All of the bottles except 1 are stainless steel and insulated, and the 9 criteria are leak-proof, best insulation, most durable, easiest to clean, best handle, least cumbersome, most affordable, most car friendly, and most popular. Here's my YT video about it if you'd like to check it out, and it has a link to the spreadsheet: [https://youtu.be/s2JUrSHfdrE](https://youtu.be/s2JUrSHfdrE) Finding a steel, insulated, leak proof, wide mouth bottle is easy, but the trickiest criteria you mentioned is dishwasher safe / easiest to clean. A lot of bottles are dishwasher safe, but they aren't really easy to deep clean. It's ALWAYS a good idea to deep clean regularly (like removing seals and using a cleaning tablet) since the dishwasher can't reach every surface by itself, and if you don't, then bacteria can build up (big problem with most straw bottles with flip-up spouts). So I'd highly recommend researching that some before buying because it's REALLY hard to know that ahead of time. But to sum up which are easiest to clean (both dishwasher safe and easy deep cleaning), many big tumblers are pretty good because of the wide top opening if that's the style you're looking for (like Stanley Quencher). Chug lids are usually pretty simple and relatively easy too. Straw lids are a lot trickier because traditional flip-up spouts are a pain to clean around. Owala is probably your best bet if you want a straw lid because it's a fixed spout and every surface that comes into contact with water is easy to reach. They say they're dishwasher recommended, but that's just to preserve the finish for as long as possible and you shouldn't have any issues with it doing actual damage to your insulation or bottle.   Stanley tools are forever

  Stanley 750 chisels would like a word, and their lines of vintage  planes are pretty top notch. Not sure where you would get low tier from either of those.  I find even their old utility knives to be fairly iconic. As a brand in total and with modern dilution, sure, it's just another basic brand, but they certainly have a well earned reputation that has been copied extensively

  I’m a tradesman that measures hundreds of times a day. Stanley fat max is the only tape measure I buy. It can survive a 20’ fall. I still go through 2 a year, but that’s amazing for the abuse I put them through.

  Best and lightest hard bodied cooler that holds 12 cans or less?

  I've got a stanley 16qt lunchbox cooler that will hold about 16 beers and 2 yeti 2lb ice blocks. It's a bit bigger than you're probably looking for, but it might be worth checking out. It's held up great going to work, though most of the time it was just going from the kitchen to the pickup and pickup to the truck bed or break room.

  Searching for small toolkit

  I bought a couple Anvil toolkits ... one for my office and one for home. at home depot. they may be bigger than you want but they fit a lot of things into a case the size of a college textbook. its 76 pieces. they also make an 18 piece toolkit. Anvil tools seem to be excellent quality from my point of view but I am not someone who uses them a whole lot. I imagine Stanley might have even higher quality. They have a 38 piece set. All of these are at the Home Depot website.

  Looking for a glass/stainless steel water dispenser

  I just restored an antique 5-gallon Stanley water dispenser that is steel on the outside, stainless steel on the inside, has a brass spigot with brass internals, and the lid is also stainless. It leaked when I first got it but I cleaned the spigot out and replaced the cracked seals with silicone O-rings. It no longer leaks and the spigot works fine. The bottom of the dispenser says "It will not break" which used to be Stanley's slogan until the 1960's. I have put 10 gallons through it so far and it works well. However, there is a faint odd taste that I am trying to figure out. I cleaned it thoroughly with soap and water, but I may need to clean it some other way.

  $2K Amazon Budget—Help Me Turn Digital Money Into Sawdust

  Presuming g this is just about basic home ownership: One approach is to look at by tasks you’d likely tackle. First off is painting and drywall repair. Some good name brand wall knives, disposable drywall cutting knives, trowel and some small putty knives. My dad and I have been painting forever and our tools are easily 20 years old. Just wash and dry after use. Get some name brand paint rollers, brushes and a metal tray or two. Some real drop clothes. You’d likely need to do some demo at some point too. A painters four in one or five in one tool is a great chisel, hammer, scraper and more in one tool! Trim removal tools and demo hammers are worth an investment. Check out Stanley fat max fubar. I’d guess maybe an overall $300-500 budget for all this? You’ll probably wind up replacing some outlets or fixtures so get some basic electrical tools. A decent multimeter, some wire strippers (I like the spring powered ones you squeeze) and some small wire snips or similar. An inexpensive battery powered screw driver helps here to as drills can be overkill here. $100? An electric pressure washer and foam gun is great for Keri g the house clean. Maybe $250ish? A basic mechanics socket and wrench set can be useful, not just for cars but appliances and some odds and ends. 1/2 drive is likely overkill. Maybe $200? Craftsman should still be honoring warranties at Lowe’s should anything break. That may be a good starting point for evaluation. Get a large adjustable wrench or two for some basic plumbing. Nothing else will do the trick here. I’d imagine you need some garden type tools too. A leaf rake, metal rake, flat shovel and spade shovel will all get used routinely on nearly any property. Depending on climate, a snow shovel or maybe a snowblower. That could easily eat half the budget here but unless it’s a huge driveway or you’re in he snow belt, I wouldn’t go higher. As others have mentioned, there’s a lot to consider with power tools. You are absolutely buying into a battery ecosystem and one that may even include lawnmowers and similar too. Two recommendations are: Hilti (expensive pro grade) is the only one with a warranty due to wear and tear. Everything else is mfg defect only. Hilti and Makita are the only ones where the company only owns that. The rest are part of umbrella corporations and I question how much some of these brands are cared for or may even last. Lowes and HD have also driven down the quality on a lot of tools (and mowers and blowers etc) because they want a certain price point instead of building what’s really needed.   Looking for insulated 1 liter water bottle

  Plenty of options mentioned here. My nieces used to say hydro flask was cool, now they are carrying owala. I like my Stanley thermos but it’s bigger than 1 liter and unwieldy to hike and walk around with. They have them in the 1 liter though. I’m rocking a no name bottle that was a hand out. It’s the right size and performs pretty good. Bottom says brand is h2go. I just put water and ice in it and rarely even wash it. It’s been dropped several times on concrete, and has a dent or two. I think dishwasher will kill the vacuum. If you are drinking something other than water, maybe black coffee, the whatever you can conveniently hand wash or get with a bottle brush. You can probably go by goodwill and take your pick of several, keep the one that works and give them back the others. Not making a responsible bifl option, but at least it recycles something. The type of bottle im using are handed out like candy as logo gear, probably thrown into a corner somewhere until they are taken to goodwill or thrown out.

  Anyone here use the Stanley Go Quick Flip Water bottle? what is the performance long term? I am worried about the button not working properly after frequent use.

  Mine started doing it as well like 6 months in when I started drinking Sprite out of it. But I also cleaned the cap itself and it seems to help. However, it happens again eventually I'm guessing it happens when it gets sticky with some liquid the the part under the release button. Wouldn't say it's something to worry about for longevity.

  Project Farm recently tested tumblers again, although the Zoji-whatever ones mentioned in comments here wasn't part. In keeping hot only Stanley and Corkcicle got an A+. Contigo and CamelBak an A Milwaukee an A- Yeti and BruMate B+ Other ratings were subjective, corrosion resistance of Stanley worse than Corkcicle as well as spills. Stanley more leak proof though.

  Agreed on this one, except you can get it in other colours besides green now. It’s the classic vacuum bottle model. I’ve got a Classic Vacuum, Aerolite, Quencher, and beer glass from Stanley and love them all. I use 1-2 of them daily, dishwasher them all the time, and they look good as new. And I’ve bought them all within the past 10 years, when presumably quality may have gone down with popularity, but haven’t experienced any negatives. My Aerolite even got run over by my rig tracks and is still fine. Little dent near the bottom on a sidewall, but it adds character.

  First, pre warm the bottle with hot water from the tap. Second, use something like a Stanley or a zojurishi tea thermos. My wife and I used off brand steel flasks for years in college and the tea was still hot at least til 1pm. By around 3 it generally got less warm, but even then wasn't bad.

  I use the green Stanley, but honestly a 30-oz insulated steel RTIC tumbler works for me too (well, until it goes empty haha) . The trick is to preheat it by filling it with boiling water while you boil another kettle for your tea. Your tea will be scorching you all damn day lol

  I carried a green stanley thermos of coffee every day in the coal mine and if you didn't drink too much of it early on it would burn your face off at lunch time. I saw some really old ones down there. The only weak point is the handles. I saw some handles replaced with fat zip ties and that worked pretty well. They have a lot of thermal mass, so pre heating the bottle is important! I never bothered to boil water for it because hot tap water did a good enough job for me, but you have to fill it up with hot water and let it sit for a couple minutes to let the heat transfer.

  I love my Yeti tumbler. Fill it with hot tea in the morning and it's still warm well after lunchtime. I don't care about it being scalding hot, it needs to be drinkable. There is a point when a product works too well. My dad has an old Stanley thermos that he fills with fresh coffee in the morning and he uses that to refill his Yeti mug. It's funny to watch him carry his two part system around. His Stanley is at least as old as I am. I'll be 40 this year. 😅 I remember as a little kid dad filling that Stanley with coffee first thing in the morning. And stories when I got older of him stopping at the local convenience store to fill it up. The ladies who worked there had it down when he worked and made sure a pot was hot for him. It has so many dents and dings but still works a treat.

  Green Stanley thermos. The one that truckers carried around . Mine is 40 ish years old. My metal lid lost its threads and the company mailed me a new one. It was constantly used when the kids were in Highschool. We would fill it with boiling water and make mulled cider, pour out the water and fill up with hot cider. We had hot cider no matter how cold it was. My daughter has a newer one that's about 10 years old. Occasionally you can find them at thrift stores and garage sales.

  Yeti 18 oz with the straw lid option. Fits in a backpack bottle holder, the car cupholders, lid unscrews easily, and ice lasts a long time. I had one for years (with stickers!) that I left in a Love’s bathroom somewhere between TX and OR but luckily my husband decided he likes a Stanley better so I took his.   We’ve somehow ended up with many of them in our family - Hydroflask, Yeti, Kleen Kanteen, Owala, and the Stanley water bottle version. Honestly, they’re all pretty comparable, but I do like that I can refill the Owala without taking the lid off and it seems to hold ice the longest. That said, I’m still most attached to my 40oz Hydroflask, I’ve had it for 8 years and it’s held up great and easy lids to replace.

  get something with a cap. Double wall at a minimum. Want it colder longer put ice in it and get it in heat radiating colors. Dad used Stanley thermoses for years for tea in sub zero environments. It works. Don't need to get stanley either. I've had a double walled 32oz capped water bottle for 8 years. With some ice it's unbearably cold for a long long time. I think the biggest heat loss in the new ones is through the thin plastic top

  I'm surprised you didn't have luck with the Stanley Ice Flow, I have had one for years and it and my Owala keep ice cold for over 24 hours. I went to an event on a Saturday, left my Ice Flow at the venue and it had ice in it still when I picked it up Monday evening. I also got my kids Yeti 18 oz water bottles with their names on them. I'd almost dare them to lose them now, but they are skilled forgetters.

  I thought I was on the coffee sub for a second. Seconding the French press suggestion! I have a Stanley camping French press it's double walled and good for two people! For a crowd I HIGHLY recommend a Sears Kenmore Percolator! They are INDESTRUCTIBLE! you can find them on Etsy from time to time and make a great cup of coffee! The only hang up is you need to unplug it by the time you are almost done with the pot. The heating element is spicy.

  Stanley IceFlow Tumblers

  I've been using mine for about a year as a daily driver and it's held up well. It's mostly easy to clean the spout with a q-tip. The two design flaws I would point out are: 1. The clank when you set the thing down is loud as hell, which is annoying if you're using it in the middle of the night 2. The lid is somewhat annoying to reattach, it requires a slight amount of care in alignment to get it to seal and that also is more difficult in the dark. To resolve the first issue, a silicone boot can be purchased on amazon or elsewhere fitted to the IceFlow. Otherwise it's a good mug. It keeps drinks cold and insulates well in high heat. The anti spill mostly works, the only time it will fail is if you overfill the jug, which is easily avoided.

  I’ve been using mine daily to bring coffee to work, without even bothering to fill it with hot water to preheat it’s hot from about 6:30am when the coffee is brewed until I finish drinking everything just before lunch at noon. If I were to bother preheating it, it would likely be the exact temp it was when it came out of the French press until 6pm without trouble. I’ve dropped it more times than I can count and while yeah it’s scratched but no dents or anything.

  The trendy new cups are surprisingly good. Normally when a blue collar brand makes a big hit product, the quality of that product, then their entire line goes quickly to shit. As of last year, well into the trend, the bougie cups were still pretty good. I'm still rocking my 10 year old Thermos, after replacing a smaller 25 year old one that I gave to a friend, so I don't know how, or if, their core line has changed.

They work great, if prepped with boiling water, I would say it stays hot for 5-6hrs. My 32oz yeti mug has equivalent thermal protection and use it more frequently the. The Stanley - BIFL.

  Why Stanley stops making trigger action bottles?

  If I were to guess, it's because when it gets hot, the pressure builds up and when you pop the trigger it can spurt hot liquid on you. This is, what I'd colloquially describe as a "skill issue" or perhaps otherwise called "user error" If you pre-warm the container this tends not to happen, or if you just lightly press the trigger to vent it it releases the pressure. Idk what everyone's saying about gunk and shit. I rinse mine daily with hot water, and deep clean it in the dishwasher at least weekly (if drinking black coffee, because it's unlikely for any mould to grow) or immediately after drinking anything with milk (because that stuff DOES go bad) The new aerolight, whilst a lot lighter and smaller (for the same capacity), is far less convenient to operate. The trigger action means even if I drop it, the trigger releases and seals it. Overall I'm disappointed and will be holding on to my two 12 Oz and one 16 Oz flasks for the rest of my life.

But, at least the main part of the container claims to be vacuum insulated. I bet the lid is foam or just air gap though, since it's plastic.

  My husband does use the Thermos brand thermos for coffee and food storage. It’s the old style metal containers with the narrow tops. If for any reason the Thermos is no longer keeping the contents hot or cold as stated, they will replace it. I had one coffee thermos replaced and on a food container they replaced the plastic screw in portion of the lid. Stanley also has a good warrenty and stands behind their products, Thermos does as well and I’ve been happy with them and will continue to buy them. We also had a TAL canteen (I believe they also sell food containers at Wal Mart) and tried to contact them to buy a new lid since theirs actually broke (Thermos lid never broke, just stopped insulating) and no one would get back to me to even let me buy a replacement lid so was not happy about that. The only reason we got Thermos instead of Stanley was because Stanley cost almost twice as much.

  I can only use glass for coffee. For me, anything else impacts the taste. I don't drink coffee out of anything except glass. If you are asking the question, you're probably not in that situation. I would recommend a Stanley (or something like that) if you can deal with the taste. It lasts for decades (if hand washed) and really keeps your beverages hot/cold. There are also some that are completely leak and spill-proof. If you're worried about taste, then glass is the obvious choice. For pretty much anything else, they're not the best. One drop and you're buying again. Plus, the ones with glass lids typically have seal issues after just a few months of use.

  Yeti or Stanley is what I’d do. If you want to get into cool physics kids cups have some cool designs Yea basically with like a little rubber flap or cover that kinda burbs air but reseals to hold the water. Kids cups do it where they won’t spill but they can break the seal and get water and air movement when they want it. It just has a rubber flap over the drinking area :)

  Have a dozen Yeti tumblers and cups - never fail, always useful - no clue why I have so many, but I actually do use them all for different things/scenarios. Their sealing chug cap is the best I’ve seen and I use them on both Yeti bottles and RTIC bottles - awesome design. Have a half dozen RTIC tumblers and cups that are honestly just as good as Yeti. Have a Stanley 42 and a Stanley Thermos with lid/cup. Love them both. Had a Takeya 32 that I recently got rid of because it was so beat up. Have a couple Owalas that we like a lot (my wife is big on these). Never saw any appeal of Hydroflask and don’t ask me why because I don’t have an answer. Never have had one and don’t think I ever will. No more insulated drinkware for me 😂.

  I bought one new in 2020, it has been awesome. Probably 100+ local fills, been camping with it a dozen times, in 5 different states. Holds beer cold for 12-16 hours depending on outside temp, drinkably cool for 24. I have had my concerns about the pin retention, but it has held up, so has the rubber gasket. Depending on how it was sealed, it will leak a couple drops that are trapped within the gasket when inverted or held sideways, but it is literally a couple drops, not a leak. If I feel cute, I may upload a photo later.

  I now have two of the 72-82 series for a total of 35.00 for both, one brand new in the box it came from, nice treasure find for me. Somebody cleaning out their parents house they just moved back into and found it in a closet, got that one for 20.00. Looks immaculate. Got another one with the removalable handle for 15.00, cleaned it up, looks brand new, just no cap. No dense scratches or signs of use from either. Getting leather holder that holds both for when me and my wife hit the mountain for snow shoeing or winter steelhead fishing. So cool. Thanks for this article.

  Number 7 type 13 Stanley jointer woodworking hand-plane. It was manufactured between 1925 and 1928, and likely was in use nearly the entire time by woodworkers and furniture makers through the generations. I paid $150 for it, and to buy something made today of the same quality, I would have to spend four times the amount. It’s an amazing tool that works as well today as when it was first used during the roaring 20s by some artisan furniture maker. I wish everyone could experience the satisfaction of using a well tuned and finely sharpened hand plane.

  Looking for recommendations for a water bottle- sleek, gray, leak proof

  I have owalla, hydroflask, Stanley as well as a few lesser brands. All of them keep water cold and tea hot. None of them are BIFL technically as the fittings and enamel will eventually break down, but definitely decades of use. If you want sleek, yeti is the best design with the non enameled stainless base. The others need a silicon boot to protect the enamel otherwise they chip and dent and don't stand straight after.

That's a killer feature for a lot of people. -For coffee/tea, Contigo is cost effective, keeps coffee hot for hours, and lasts forever -Hydroflasks keep water cold forever, but only the tiny ones fit in cupholders -Thermos has great designs for food storage that many other brands do not etc etc

I agree that the older versions are better, but the newer ones are still pretty sturdy and only have three parts.   I have a standard Stanley thermos that was my husband's granny's. She bought it in the 1970s and used it every day for her coffee until she passed away in 2011 or '12. My husband inherited it from her, and I from him. I'd say 40+ years (and counting) qualifies for BIFL. I did replace the gasket last year; $8 for 4 gaskets that I shared with friends with the same thermos. Classic vacuum 18/8 stainless steel, insulated, wide mouth, with the screw-on cap that doubles as a cup.

  For cold I love my owala bottle not sure how it would be for hot drinks, for hot drinks I use an old school Stanley flask and use the cup for when I'm having a drink. Thermos has a pretty good reputation though

  How do I even clean this?

  I use some Powdered Brewery Wash for any vintage Stanleys that I find and it's incredible. Mix one or two tablespoons inside the bottle with hot water and after 15 minutes of shaking the inside of the bottle is clean as the day it was made. I've used it to remove 20 years of coffee staining and it came out perfectly. It's really easy to find at any brewery store or you could order it in Amazon.

  I have a Stanley #6 handplane that would have been made in 1906-1915. It performs every bit as well as my late model Stanley sweetheart #4.

  Grandad almost certainly would have had a [Stanley Vacuum Bottle](http://www.amazon.com/Stanley-Classic-Vacuum-Bottle-Hammertone/dp/B000FZX93K/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1449424919). As /u/capolan notes, it would have been glass lined while today's are stainless steel, but they're otherwise pretty much unchanged from 75 years ago.

  [BIFL Request] A work boot for ACTUALLY taking out on the field that doesn't look beauiful

  I bought a pair of cheap Stanley boots with rubber on the toes i think they were 80 bucks at canadian tire. I'm a residential contractor and they have lasted 3 years surprisingly and are the most comfortable boots i have owned. Very roomy toes.

  I've had one if the Chinese made ones for just over 2 years (24oz model). I use it almost daily and have abused it quite a bit. It holds up quite well and so far I have not had any issues.

  I just bought a Stanley 24 oz thermos on ebay. With shipping it was pretty much the same price as a new one would have cost me. Like you, i wanted an older, made in USA version. I found one that was in good shape with only minimal wear. Easiest way to tell the difference is by looking at the bottom. Ive used it hunting a few times and it works great, couldnt be happier with my purchase.

  Stanley Thermos question

  I bought my Stanley thermos 6 years ago from a large box-grocery store. Still keeps a full pot HOT for over 24 hours. I pour some hot tap water into and let it sit while the coffee brews. When the coffee is done, I will then empty the water and fill the vacuum bottle with the pot of coffee and cap it. I used it working in a forge, now it's more for road trips, hunting, and studying. Looks brand new still.

  Stanley Thermos question

  Stanley does not make them in the USA anymore and they are not the same. Get one on ebay or go with a Zojirushi or Nissen. On ebay it should say where it is made, however the USA ones are heavier and feel like thicket metal, especially around the rim. My dad has the one we snagged at a garage sale when I was a kid, those things are tanks.
