I had the HM Aeron for 2 years. Bought it new during Covid. Recently (last year) I sold it on marketplace and bought a Steelcase Leap v2. Way happier with it. Much more comfortable and feels easier on both my back and my seat (Aeron has extremely firm seat).

Look for a used Steelcase Leap. You can usually get them around $300. Comparable to Herman Miller quality. I think I liked mine a little more than my current HM Embody and it was a fraction of the cost. Also check /r/officechairs

I use a Steelcase Leap v2 purchased from crandall Office Furniture. It is refurbished, but it was essentially new when I got it. Fully refurbished. All new everything. I was actually test driving an Aeron at a dealership and instantly knew it didn't fit my needs, but they had the Leap v2 as well. I fell in love with it right away. So, Crandall chairs come with a 12 year warranty. I've had mine for six years and a few months ago my gas cylinder started acting up. Crandall shipped me a new one, no questions asked. :) Other than that, the chair is as good as the day I bought it. 10/10 would recommend! I sit in this chair a minimum of 8hrs a day(work from home). It's super comfortable. Like, it's an ergo chair. So, it's fully adjustable to give your body the perfect sitting position. OR, you can sit in it like a full on heathen! Which is what I do. One leg tucked under, leaning hard to the left, reclined... You can't do that in an Aeron. For this kind of money, 100% get a refurbished Steelcase Leap v2 from Crandall Office Furniture. The Leap v2 is THE ergonomic office chair. It comes with a 12 year warranty from Crandall. It's essentially a new chair. All new foam, armrests, upholstery, gas piston etc etc. I work from home and spend a LOT of time sitting in this chair. They've got some decent ergonomic options that won't wreck your wallet. If you're willing to stretch that budget a bit, you could also look for a used herman miller - sometimes you can snag one for a decent price secondhand. Also, your setup matters just as much as the chair. Get your monitor up to eye level so you're not constantly looking down, and make sure your chair height is right. And seriously, stand up and walk around periodically - no chair is gonna save you if you're sitting for 8 hours without moving. Hope you find smth that helps

I know a lot of people are mentioning a used Aeron or Gesture but if you want something new, the Desky Pinnacle is $500. Has all of the features youd want for a mid range ergo chair. theres lumbar support, mesh etc. The Steelcase Gesture kept coming up for a reason. I heard it's great if you sit cross legged during games. For the Herman Miller Aeron, it's great but the hard plastic edges around the seat make it uncomfortable if you change positions much. If you like getting cozy or changing how you sit, that's something to keep in mind. Try to test in person if you can, or make sure there's a good return policy. Chairs are super personal.

Steelcase Leap v2. You can pick up a used one for not too much, but they also have a really good warranty if you can afford to buy new. They take a bit of getting used to - the sliding seat recline action is a bit weird and the way the back flexes with you rather than holding you rigidly feels less solid than a normal chair, but really those things are what make it work so well. I've been using one for 6+ years now and it's made a massive difference to my back. But also, get up and move around as often as you can.

There's obviously going to be a difference between a $100 and $1000 product. The quality is gonna be better, but one thing is that just because a chair is more expensive, it won't necessarily be better for you than some other one. Office chairs are a really subjective thing, people like to sit differently and all, so you need to try a chair before buying it. Adjustable armrests helped me the most when I had similar issues. I went with the Forma (around $720). The armrests adjust in pretty much every direction and the seat depth is adjustable too. It's been solid so far. Everyone's gonna say Herman Miller or Steelcase and yeah those are great if you have the budget, but the Forma does what it needs to without the $1k+ price tag.

Herman Miller makes the best Herman Miller chairs - if new is out of budget, buy one used - you can usually find one in the sub $200 range with a little looking. Steel Case is another good option, similar price range and availability. I can speak to experience buying a used steel case, sending in a warranty request, they honored the warranty and sent me a brand new chair, even with telling them it was a second hand purchase (i only asked if I could order a replacement part because it broke)

Herman Miller chairs are not uniquely ergonomic. Hell, for some people they're downright uncomfortable. What chair works best for you is a pretty personal thing. Top tier brands like Herman Miller and Steelcase are well-regarded because of build quality alongside ergonomics that work well for *many* people. If you know you want a Herman Miller, the best affordable option is just a used one.

They've both saved me loads of back pain, I do like the Steelcase a bit better for the adjustments but I'm pretty sure that's because the store owner helped me fit it and showed me all the adjustments. Steelcase leap v2 is my favorite. I think it fits my body best and is extremely comfortable. Experience with Aeron and embody, both are good maybe more people prefer the Aeron especially for it's modern appearance

I have Leap in the office and the Herman Miller in my home office. Both are excellent but for me the main differences are: ¹ The HM has a mesh that keeps you cool. I never get that warm feeling after seating for a while. The Leap keeps me warm ² In terms of pure comfort, I prefer the Leap. I'm quite tall and the Leap also has extends more to support my legs. ³ In terms of lumbar support, I much prefer the Herman Miller. Either way, both are excellent.

If you're a bigger person be warned, the leap has metal parts on the outside of where your thighs rest that dig into your legs. My chair was painful to sit in until I got a butt pad that raised me up a bit, now I love it. Mine is the V2 as well.

I had steelcase for over 10 years as a gaming chair. It’s not a product for lifetime, as the textiles worn out at the end (it wasn’t new when I got it) and one lever for height adjusting had broken in transfer. Still, sturdy quality and comfortable. It’s now in my garage as a ”thinking chair”.

Personally, I think the Aeron classic is actually a bad chair. Like the frame is not comfortable and has many hard corners that dig into my thighs. The aeron remastered is a much nicer chair that’s actually at the same level as the leap. Of these 2 choices, I’d go leap all day.

I’ve had both brands. I prefer Herman miller for a hot office, but I prefer the steel case for long sitting and especially the higher back model to deep recline and take a quick chair nap in. The higher back steel case model would be my general choice, but it doesn’t look as good and is hotter in summer. Can’t go wrong with either frankly.

It's my time to shine! Hey OP, I have both! It depends on what you like in a chair. I started with the Leap and later got the Herman Miller out of luck. I'd say that the Leap forces better sitting habits, but if you ignore that and start sitting in other ways anyway, you're gonna be uncomfortable. The miller is more comfortable but won't force you to sit right, so it depends on your needs.

Which you prefer will depend on your anatomy and how you move around while you sit. For me, the Aeron and Mirra are more comfortable than any Steelcase I've tried (both Leaps, Gesture, Amia, Series 2). They just suit my back the best, and I prefer their free rocking to the way Steelcases lock in place. Also, I've grown really dependent on their forward tilt feature. In comparison, other chairs now seem to sit way too far back. I'd also argue the Aeron has a stronger claim to BIFL status, since the Leap's upholstery flattens with time and is expensive to replace. The only part of the Aeron that wears out is the seat foam, which you can replace for less than $20. That said, Steelcases have a lot of advantages. The Leap V1 is the cushiest, most luxuriant office chair I've tried—you can almost treat it like a recliner. The Leap V2 is almost as comfortable despite the foam being thinner. Also, depending on where you live, Steelcases are easier to find cheap on Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist. I've snagged a Leap V1 for free and a Leap V2 for $75. I had to wait a *long* time to get a used Aeron for $300.

The Aeron has the king of rocking motion features, but that's where the plusses end. The v2's arms aren't attached to the back. So, when you recline, your mouse arm doesn't point to the sky. The main reason though... I sit like a full on heathen 90% or the time. What's awesome about the v2 is it is fully adjustable to give you that bolt upright, ergonomic perfection. With it's flexible back that conforms to your movements. OR you can sit in it with one leg tucked under, hard lean to the left at half recline and be as comfortable. I work from Home(eBay) and spend a LOT of time sitting in this dude. Plus, I have a pc gaming/building hobby. I just spend a lot of time here. I love my Steelcase Gesture. The tilt mechanism is unique, but the really special thing is the arm rests, which raise and lower, extend, and swivel in and out. That last thing lets you swing them inwards to actually support your arms as you type, and swing them out so you can get out of the chair. Super useful, and afaik unique in office chairs.

Steelcase Leap and Herman Miller Aeron are highly reviewed chairs. I actually tried both and preferred the Aeron. I also liked that there was less cushions on it as I could only afford used then. I bought it used like 5+ years ago for $450, and it's still good. Aeron has 3 sizes and B was fine (most common size). I have a C at work and it's too big and long (depth size). The downside of the Aeron is that there is no ability to change the depth of the chair.

Look in your area for a used office furniture store. They usually have the big names for huge discounts, and you can actually sit in them and try them out. Good stores will offer advice and even do repairs or make adjustments specifically for you. I got my leather Steelcase chair for about $600, and it currently retails for $1500+. It was in like new condition and they offered me an additional warranty on it at no extra cost.

I've had a Herman Miller Aeron, Steelcase Leap v1, and Steelcase Gesture /w headrest. I think the Aeron is really overrated. People who have only had cheap chairs from Walmart think that you need the mesh bottom to prevent swamp ass, but any cloth bottom chair will accomplish that. The two Steelcase chairs I've had have been much comfier, especially the Gesture with headrest.

I heard a lot of people can't stand the Herman Miller even with the posturefit lumbar. The mesh near the plastic frame is uncomfortable for some body types. Steelcase Leap V2 or Gesture work for more people because they adjust better. Find a local office liquidation place and test chairs before you buy. Used Aerons or Steelcase go for $300–$600. What feels great to someone else might wreck your back. Thing is, even the best chair won't save you if you're sitting 8+ hours daily. Get a standing desk. Switching between sitting and standing takes pressure off your lower back. Desky has a lot of affordable sit-stand options if you need something budget-friendly, and that combo beats parking yourself in an expensive chair all day.

For that price and durability, try the big and tall chairs from staples. Mine has lasted and Ive wore out a ton of regular chairs. Replaced about 10 of the pneumatic cylinders. The one I ended up going with has fixed arms, which are nearly perfect for my height. Ive had one steelcase chair and the arms were super adjustable, too adjustable. I leaned against them while take a drink too many times just to have it shift and spill stuff. Started killing chairs during WoW, plenty of 16hr days. I still game, but just a tiny bit in comparison to those days. Touch over 6ft, ranged from 225-310lbs, and I tended to plop down as a 20/30 year old. Tried to get a brand for ya and just see manufacturers codes, ive had this one for 6 years!

Ask your company if they will buy or chip in for an ergonomic setup for your home. Take a look at Crandall Office Furniture (no affiliation other than being a happy customer) for their remanufactured Steelcase, etc. chairs. They’re a good option if you can’t afford new and don’t want someone’s used chair seat foam full of Taco Tuesday goodness. For larger folks, there’s the Steelcase Leap Plus which you can occasionally find there or on sale on Amazon or other places. Second the advice that sitting for that long isn’t great if you can switch it up. Sitting for long periods can shorten your hip flexors, among other things, resulting in low back pain when not sitting. Sit stand desks let you alternate positions for comfort. A good mat helps. A walking treadmill pairs well with such a desk and can aid weight loss.

What's your budget for this? Assuming it's somewhere around $500 or $600, you can get the Desky Dual Laminate Sit Stand Desk for around $580. This one has two motors and doesn’t feel flimsy like the cheaper Amazon desks. Uplift is also great long term. Their bamboo tops and frames are still going strong after 6 to 7 years, and the warranty is easy to deal with. If you don’t mind used, Steelcase Airtouch or Mayline from resellers are built like tanks and usually much cheaper.

I have a fair amount of vintage furniture and things from the 1960s, so a set of Laurel lamps that get used daily in the bedroom, and a Robert Long chandelier in the dining room, plus vintage credenzas, a Steelcase desk, dressers, tables and chairs, etc. Solid wood (and aluminum) FTW.

I know everybody loves the Herman Miller Aeron, but to me, Herman Miller makes design pieces, Steelcase makes chairs.

I've been using Aeron chairs for over 25 years and like them a lot — the mesh is wonderful in our hot humid climate (and no A/C). But they're not for everybody; whatever you do, go to a showroom and spend some serious time in the chairs you're considering. Ideally, your dealer will have a generous return policy. I made the mistake of thinking that "bigger is better" when I got my first Aeron, and although it was very comfortable, I went down a size when I got my second and the fit was much better. A good friend switched from the Aeron to the Herman Miller Cosm and had this to say about it: "it's lovely. There's only one thing to adjust — the height. Everything else just adapts to your body. Definitely feels like the 'next generation of the Aeron'." And one of my bosses used a Steelcase Leap that he thought helped with his bad back. I don't think you could go wrong with any of these chairs.

For my office I got a remanufactured Steelcase Leap v2 from Crandall Office Furniture. They replace the foam/back and some other parts such as the gas cylinder. No affiliation other than being a happy customer. New was too expensive and I didn’t want to get someone’s Taco Tuesday seat foam. Perhaps there are other companies that do this.

Herman Miller Aeron or Embody are solid picks. Steelcase Leap V2 is great too and usually cheaper. All three will easily last 10+ years with heavy use. I'd try to sit in them first if possible since comfort is super personal but honestly you can't go wrong with any of those three. The 12 year warranties speak for themselves.

If OP wants something a bit more breathable tho, Herman Miller Aeron Chair mesh is a good shout too. Both are built to last, just depends if you're team cushion or team mesh tbh.

Herman Miller Aeron Chair is brilliant. Steelcase Leaps is a close second. Neither are cheap, but both are leaps and bounds ahead of any "normal" chair. Remember that you might spend more time in your chair than your bed, so spend accordingly. Me - I insist on Herman Miller. I had a job a few years ago with barbage chairs. It was exhausting to sit at my desk. We replaced the chair with a Herman Miller (I had used one at previous jobs). The different was (no surprise to me) night and day. Not sore, more endurance, easier to focus. etc.... I now own one of my own in my home office. I won't sit in anything else. You can usually get them used for under $400. The new sticker prices is super high, but used.... that's the price of 2 "normal" chairs, but it will outlast them by a decade. Herman Miller Chairs tend to last a couple decades.

The Aeron has been mentioned, but it doesn’t suit everyone (the bar across the front of the chair can be a bit uncomfortable). Definitely look at good office chair brands from an office clearance company. I went with a Steelcase Gesture and it’s amazing.

I've tried a ridiculous number of chairs over the years, and I keep winding up back with a Steelcase Leap. Mine has lasted a quarter of a century so far. You can probably pick up a used Leap in your price range. Full disclosure, though. I unfortunately don't keep returning to the Leap because I think it's *comfortable*, exactly. The butt padding is insufficient, it doesn't lean back as far as I want, and it lacks a headrest are my main problems (you can get a headrest addon kit though). Rather, literally everything else I've tried has been significantly *worse*. But I've never sat in a car seat I found totally comfortable, either, so it might be that the problem is me. Nonetheless, it's a solid chair that at least doesn't suck.

I went down this rabbit hole a few years ago and saw people commonly recommend Herman Miller Aeron and Steelcase Leap. I was so close to getting secret lab as well but ultimately thought it looked hot and bulky. I went with the Aeron mainly for the mesh (more ventilation, didn't wanna overheat) and I think it works really well for me. There's a huge aftermarket for these chairs so you can easily find them for a fraction of a cost used. You can also find parts easily if something breaks. Ive tried the leap in my old workplace and it's also very comfortable, but I haven't sat in one for hours so I can't give a good review on that. But regardless of what chair you end up getting, I really urge you to try them out if you can. They're much like shoes where there's no one size fits all.

Then you will know what YOUR chair is. But beside HM you have tons great ergonomic options that’ll last years Steelcase Leap V2, Autonomous ErgoChair Ultra 2. I bought Leap recently for my wife. I use ErgoChair for myself. Assembly for it was a breeze and it's very comfortable. It is firmer than most chairs, feels similar to the Embody with the backing with nodes. Compared to the Leap, there's more adjustability that it accommodates different body types that way imo

Hey friend! Have a lot of thoughts on this. For me: Herman Miller Aeron. I had a nasty back injury at the start of covid, and was working 8 hrs/day in the shittiest desk chair™. So I did a TON of research. HM, Steelcase, Markus, general gaming chairs, etc. and ended up buying a Herman Miller Aeron classic on Craigslist. Incredible chair, I'm officially a shill for them now. Since then, I've bought 6 more Aeron's for family/friends. 5 were the classic model, and I recently bought one of the new remastered series for myself as an upgrade. **For the classic model you shouldn't spend more than $350/chair.** They're incredible. Built like absolute tanks, amazing back support, great cooling, excellent 3rd party headrests, all green flags (though they collect dust and will catch headphone cords at an absurd rate). The Remastered chairs are expensive, but the Classic bought pre-owned are 1/5 the price and 90% as good IMO. Different folks prefer different chairs so definitely do test any chair out before you buy since it's an expensive purchase. Aeron authorized dealers typically only sell the Remastered so to get a true apples to apples, go to a refurbisher and find a Classic to try. Otherwise you risk talking yourself into a $1,300 brand new chair. Also try a Leap as much of the above applies. Different preferences between people. Ahnesty has a good video on how to find Aerons used from a few years ago on YT. Used that a lot.

The only work I've ever had to do on it was replacing the pneumatic cylinder once about 12 years ago, then a couple years ago the vinyl on one of the armrests cracked, and I replaced that. Parts are pretty widely available still, and the chair itself is very serviceable.

Firstly, get a good quality office chair. Even gaming chairs are really bad. Office chairs are better in pretty much every way, especially for gaming oddly enough. Head over to r/OfficeChairs for more info. Look at spending at least $200 if not much more. Look at Facebook marketplace. In my area, marketplace has a lot of cheap herman miller and steelcase chairs because there are a lot of offices. You should be able to get a great used chair for less than $500 once you know what to look for. The cheapest way to fix your back, is to learn how to sit with proper posture. There are a few great youtube videos like [this one](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XSd1sgO8cJk) that will help, but you generally need a decent chair to be able to have proper posture. In addition to posture, make sure to do some stretches every now and then. There are a lot of stretches you can do without even getting up. A good desk as well. It doesn't have to be super expensive and sit to stand, but you need more space than you think, especially working for moth. 30" of depth is a must for me. Ergonomic foot rest is a nice addition. Decent peripherals: Headphones, whether its good noise canceling headphones to focus, or the opposite with open back headphones to pay attention to your surroundings. r/headphones has helped me out before. Ergonomic keyboard and mouse. Logitech is generally a good brand, but do your research. Please get a wrist rest and a mousepad. If you can learn to get used to them, they make mice that look like shark fins, that help reduce arm strain and carpal tunnel. Additionally, since you go into the office, a good idea would be to get a mouse that has a wireless dongle, and Bluetooth, so you only need one mouse. Or just keep the nicer mouse at home and get a different one for the office if you are forgetful. Keyboards can get pretty crazy, just get a functional keyboard from a good brand and it wont die on you. r/keyboards is a good place to look if you wanted to get a nicer one. Any webcam that can do at least 1080p. Not sure if you need a webcam or not, but trust me, whatever webcam you buy is likely gonna be a bit better than a laptop webcam. This will help you look more professional. Monitor with adjustable height. Helps with the whole posture thing. An uninterruptable power supply is great especially if you have a desktop and if you have somewhat frequent black/brown outs. Just make sure you buy one that can handle whatever the maximum wattage is of all the devices plugged into it combined. If you have any questions or want any specific recommendations, just let me know. I have spent the last few years perfecting my home set up. If you only take away one thing from this comment, is learn about sitting posture and get a better chair.

I'm not promoting the Embody---other people love other Herman Miller Chairs, others love Steel Case--my body, this worked best--the Embody. (there's an office chair sub on reddit and plenty of better off reddit stuff). Organizers--having plenty of on hand Manilla folders and file cabinets (with hangers) to accomodate being organized. A dedicated drawer to office supplies-staples clips, binder clips , stapler, scissors ruler a few pens...game changer. Battery back up with a surge protector that covers power spikes. AC unit (window unit) in the room, space heater too. Big water bottle (the 5 gallon) with a pump unit (Amazon sells these so you don't need a whole water heater)

The plate was originally welded to another part in the tilting mechanism and likely not easily replaceable without disassembling the entire tilt mechanism. The tilt mechanism itself should be swappable with a generic tilt mechanism (or pay secretlabs for an expensive one) but secretlabs gas cylinder according to the YouTube repair video I watched is not intended to be removable from the tilt mechanism once installed…. Still awaiting my quote from secretlabs support but im not optimistic as ive seen other users post repairs in the 150-200$ range which im not willing to do since I know now the part is just garbage and wont last. At that price point Id rather buy a steelcase

From my experience they're super easy to clean, but ymmv. Except for dust on the underside (which Aerons do collect quite a bit if) I couldn't tell it's not brand new and I've had it for years. Depends on what part "unclean" bugs you. Also, if you haven't already, I'd go to a store and try sitting in any kind of chair you're thinking about buying first. Some people prefer the Leap, some the Aeron - you might try it and realize some chair just isn't for you

Best options are Herman miller Aeron and steel case leap v2, I use an Aeron in the office and a leap v2 at home. The Aeron forces proper sitting position which can be annoying but does let you work long hours, the leap is very adjustable and lets you sit however you want. I highly recommend finding them used even if you have to referb them, they’re not like cheap chairs that are junk if any part fails, you can get replacement parts, I got mine used from a store that does office chair referb so it came with new upholstery which was nice. If you go Herman miller please reference their size guide, chair size is indicated by bumps on the back near the top, 1 bump = small, 2 = medium etc

This is entirely based on your body and personal comfort. Steelcase, Herman Miller and Knoll all make great chairs that can be had for <$300 secondhand. But you need to try them out. Just picking an Aeron may not work.

I'm not made of money, herman miller aeron alternatives?
I've had good experiences with Branch Furniture. I've been using their Ergonomic chair pro after upgrading from a used HM Sayl I got for $300. I had their original ergonomic chair a year and a bit ago and had to return it as the lumbar was uncomfortable. I gave them another chance since their service was good though, as the Sayl I found was a bit meh. Had the pro for about 6 months now and it's very comfortable compared to the original chair, the Ikea Markus, and HM Sayl (not sure if it would be the case if it was brand new though). The price is also good imo, but if I was able to find a used Leap v2 near me for a good price, I probably would have hopped on that instead. If you can't find a good refurbed chair near you, I think the Ergonomic Chair Pro is good though, and I've been happy thus far. For reference I am 5'8" and 140 LBs, sit/stand about 8-11 hours a day working from home as I also game after work for another 2-3 hours.

My personal BIFL items 1. Darn Tough socks, with proper fitting shoes (I have wide feet, stopped wearing brands that don’t have wide feet options). 2. Cast Iron (Lodge) & Stainless Steel pots and pans (even tho it’s two, worth listing both). 3. Full-grain leather belt. I use Hanks everyday belt. 4. Any decent safety razor. Replacement blades are super cheap. I love feather blades. 5. Proper fit computer chair. I have the Steelcase Gesture. Best to try in person before getting it. And if able, pre-own to save even more money. This my personal items that I’ve actually tried and use till this day. Took lots of research and readings/watching reviews before buying these items.

Pioneer 10mm lever lifting belt - I think I am at 8 years with the thing and it is as good now as it was the day I bought it (better even, its broken in). I will not squat or deadlift without it. I will NEVER use another brand, If these guys ever go out of business I am going to buy an extra in my size and one a size up or a size down from my size so I always have one. They released a better lever (or so I hear, it looks like it can be more finely adjusted) and while I want it, I literally have a perfectly fine belt that looks like it will never die. The only way I would get the new one is if I lose enough weight/ gain enough weight to need a different size (slim/fat chance that will happen any time soon). Red Wing Iron Rangers - No other boot or shoe has lasted me this long, and it is not close. Customer service is outstanding and the only shop that has ever made me feel like they cared about me after I have spent money. I bring the boots in once or twice a year and they clean them up, oil them, and put on new laces for free, last time they even replaced all the rivets for free. When the sole finally goes I will have them re-sole it, and while that will cost it will be no where near what I would have paid for anything comparable. These boots have saved me money in the long run, which is saying a lot given they are like over $300. Rogue Gym Equiptment - I have a RML-490c rack, an Ohio Bar, a stainless steel power bar, some adjustable dumbbells, a sandbag, and all of it is top notch. I went with "buy once cry once" so I do not know how other stuff stacks up, its mostly steel after all, but Rogue has been wonderful and looks very nice. Titan is probably also great, but I haven't bought yet. Vitamix - After burning through three magic/nutri/whatevername bullets in a year I found a Vitamix on market place, and it just goes and goes and goes. I really could blend anything. I thought it was a little extra at first, because it was more than I had spent on any other counter top appliance, even used, but it is well worth it. It sure was less than the three broken blender combined. Steelcase Leap 2 desk chair - I got this chair used about 6 months after covid turned my workplace into work form home. It is just as good as the day I bought it. Watched some videos on how to properly personalize and adjust it and it is great. Well worth the spend. Honorable mentions: Bedrock Sandals. I lost my first pair during a float, but they were two years old and still going strong. My brother in law has had his for about twice that time and has had them resoled by the company at a decent price. Again, I tear through shoes, so two years out of that first pair is remarkable for sandals. Second pair is only a couple of months old, but they feel just as good. I really love all of my modular synths. Every time I have reached out to a maker for support they have replied so quickly and with such a good attitude. Make Noise, Joranalogue, Intellijel, Doepfer, NerdSEQ (seemingly one person, hello Thomas), and Erica Synths. Special shoutout to Erica Synths who saw that I could not get a piece to a shop and just sent me the exact part number to order so I could fix it myself. Special shoutout to NerdSEQ because Thomas is a monster developer who just gives his whole heart to this thing. He is still making better firmware, he is still answering questions in the discord and the forums. This is his baby and it shows every single day, what amazing work. It is an expensive hobby because of this, and I got most of my set up through some really lucky (for me) auctions and trades, but when I do buy new I love supporting these guys.

I found one on the neighbor’s curb during trash pickup day. It was missing the clip that is at the very bottom of the gas cylinder. The ball bearings that and some washers & bushings had also fallen out. I found replacement kit on eBay for about $15. The back lumbar pad was also cracking. Those can be replaced easily too with parts from eBay or amazon. I still prefer my Steelcase Leap V2 over this chair, but the HM looks better.

No. I’ve bought those for cheaper. You can get the one with lumbar support for that much or less. Ultimately I prefer other chairs though. Currently using the steel case leap v2. The tilt back on the Aeron tilts the back and seat as one, which is not as comfortable as just the back (like a car).

I went with the Steelcase Gesture for home and prefer it much more. That said, the Aeron is still a great chair, too, and I continue to use it at work.

my boss got one of these for $40. i got a steelcase leap v2 for $40. anyhow, yes, 300 is decent so long as everything functions properly. for $300 new, you're not going to find a chair nearly as nice and well made.

Average rate is about $300 for a used Aeron so that’s not a bad deal at all. You can easily resell it if you don’t like it. Is it the best used chair you can get for that price? Nah. I’d look for a used Steelcase Leap first.

My vote, yes, but you will likely want to do a few small things to it. FYI that regardless of whether you buy THIS chair, I would consider both the casters and piston on any office chair moving forward. Steelcase would be a decent choice as well and for the record I also bought a Secret Labs and would not do that again. Chair arms and back were fine, but the cushion did not sit well for me. And I gave $400 for my Aeron at the beginning of 'Rona -- worth every penny and still holding up great. My ONLY complaints about it are 1) they didn't have a size D for my wide-backside, but I fit mostly OK and it's been fine (YMMV) and then the armrests don't "hold" to the height I've set them to. Over the day they'll slowly go down, one more than the other. I just adjust as I need to, haven't needed to jury-rig it to "lock". Still, it was used and I knew the score going into it.

Well, Herman Miller makes more than just Aerons. Supposedly the Embody is much more forgiving and the back looks super comfy cause it kinda hugs you. I've also heard a lot of good things about the Steelcase Amia. I've only got personal experience with the Steelcase Leap 2 andthe Herman Miller Aeron (Remastered, size B). Both had their good and bads. Leap 2 was more comfortable to sit in when in random posture positions but it got hotter and the tailbone pain issue I had with it was a deal breaker. Aeron was not as comfortable for long sitting sessions but that's because I don't sit in the one position it wants you to be in. I want to try an Amia or its frankenstein version, the Lamia.

Sure. Aerons last for decades. But. The front edge of the seat pan can dig into the backs of your thighs. Some people have to use cushions. It also sort of forces you to sit a certain way. It doesn't accommodate slouching, throwing a leg over the chair arm, etc. And as somebody else said, you have to get the right size, because many aspects of the chair, like seat depth, aren't adjustable. For my money, a Steelcase Gesture was the better chair. But Aerons are popular and used ones are easy to find. So parts shouldn't be an issue, etc.

Not the OP but I have the Aeron at home and the Steelcase Leap at the office. I prefer Steelcase more. The Aeron is good enough I'm not replacing it, but I'm not thrilled with the armrest. Lumbar support foam also broke and I haven't replaced it.

Depends on your budget. I also own a Steelcase Leap 2 and it is more comfortable for sitting in if you like to wiggle and move in and you can usually find them pretty cheap on FB Marketplace or Craigslist. Not to say it doesn't have its problems too. The Aeron is way cooler temperature wise because of the mesh and the Leap series has an issue where it can cause pain on the tailbone area. That tailbone problem is why I bought the Aeron in the first place. I've heard good things about the Steelcase Amia. Supposedly if you take the seat from an Amia and put it on the frame/back of a Leap, you've got best of both worlds.

Herman Miller can be hit or miss. Those chairs have weird proportions and don't fit as many people as you'd think. If it's real then definitely go see it in person and try it. If it doesn't work out then l think you look out for a Steelcase Leap.

Law school is no joke — I went through something similar during my postgrad years. I tried a few fancy chairs, but what saved my neck (literally) was a **Steelcase Leap** with an adjustable headrest. It’s pricey upfront, but used ones go for a fraction and it adjusts well for smaller frames. Add a good footrest and it seriously makes a difference. Also: take posture breaks. Even the best chair won’t save you from the “law school slump.”

I hated the Herman miller chair, tried a few different sizes but they were all too stiff. I have a Steelcase Leap V2 and love it. I’m a graphic designer and easily can spend 12 hours in that chair between work and crafting/gaming. My butt used to go numb in others including the HM, but it’s been two years with the steelcase and no issues yet

People like the Aeron, but it sort of forces you into one position. It doesn't really allow slouching. Also the front edge of the seat pan can dig into your thighs, right behind the knee. I got a Steelcase Gesture a few years ago, and it has changed my life. The recline goes way back. And the arms aren't just adjustable in height and extension, which is common, but also can swing in and out, so they can actually support your arms while you're typing. But when I was in law school and reading a lot, I often had to tilt my head and arm so I could highlight important passages, and AFAIK there's no solution for that. Periodic massages from a certified massage therapist helped. You might also check out massage guns, or special attachments for cordless jigsaws. Good luck!

I have a Steelcase Gesture, and there are other good suggestions in other comments, but the best recommendation I have is to test any chair before you buy it. The best test is at least 30 minutes doing the same sorts of things you do day to day. Measure your desk height to be sure that the chair is a suitable height to sit with your feet flat and your legs at 90ish degrees (or plan on a footrest), check to make sure the arms will play nice with your desk if that’s important to you (I need to scoot my chair all the way in when I’m not at my desk since it’s a small home office). Before I ordered my Gesture, I found a coworking space in my city that had the chair I was interested in, so I was able to try it out for longer than 5 minutes. That really helped me decide to move forward with a purchase that has served me very well. Seeing it in person also helped me decide what options I did and didn’t want.

https://crandalloffice.com sells refurbed high end chairs Just got a steelcase Amia for my bday from them and it is in like new condition. Which is an upgrade from my previous Steelcase. I swear by steelcase chairs. My wife is using my old one. I picked one up from a garage sale 20 years ago for $5. It was built like a tank. It had a mid century sort of design. Unfortunately the wife didn’t like it and we had to get rid of it. I rub it in every now and then that we should have kept it ;)

Even the most basic $550 Steelcase Series 1 is a game-changer. I have a Series 1 and I also have a $1500 Steelcase Gesture that I got from an office surplus store for $300. Both of them are excellent for extended sitting.

Most comfortable office chair. But not like a Herman Miller
If you’re looking for something super comfortable but don’t want to go the Herman Miller route, I can’t recommend the Steelcase Leap enough. I’ve been using mine for over a year now and it’s honestly the best chair I’ve owned that isn’t a Herman Miller. The adjustability is wild—you can tweak the lumbar support, seat depth, armrest height and width, and even the recline tension, so it’s really easy to dial it in for your body and sitting style.

Almost anything human scale except their "budget line" - design driven and highly ergonomic 3. Steelcase leap - a power horse, my recommendation for plus size individuals as well.

and if you're sitting in a chair 8 hours a day 5-6 days a week just won't be the same as a Herman Miller or Steel Case Bonus points--you can get $1000 chairs reconditioned with some support from the resellers for considerably less. to each his own. Buy it for life is more likely Steel Case / Herman Miller and is not Office Max, Staples or Ikea----older person here having replaced all the latter stores chairs in 3-5 years. My body aches won the debate. Embody for my body has "fixed" chronic back pain that was caused by crappy chairs.

There are 2 types of Aeron chairs. The original Aeron is not comfy IMO. The hard frame digs into the back of my legs and is overall unergonomic. The best part about this chair is the reclining which is really deep. The Aeron remastered came out in 2017 I think so most second hand Aerons are originals. The remastered has significantly better ergonomics and a much more curved frame so it’s more comfy. That being said, I prefer the steelcase leap v2 because they’re much more ergonomic without the rigid frames Aerons use. I’ve sat on OG and remastered Aerons a lot but I have a Leap at home.

I hope it lives up to its hype, I’m on my 3rd different office chair and I can’t find one I like so I hope the leap ends my search lol. I do need to realize I’m coming from a large seat staples chair I’ve used for years and sat wrong so I’m going to have to force myself to have decent seat posture from here on out.

The important thing is to get a chair that fits you properly, and that you find comfortable. The Herman Miller chair in your picture are a decent quality chair that many people like... Personally, I do not find them comfortable, but that doesn't mean that others won't find them to be perfect for their needs. I prefer the more conventional style Steelcase chairs myself.

As others have said, just buy a used Herman Miller, unless Steelcase fits you better. I got one Aeron from a refurbisher and two others from private sellers on Facebook Marketplace. The good thing about the Aeron in particular is that eBay is full of parts if anything breaks down the road.

I got a steelcase leap v2 for 275 today from a storefront that sells office furniture. they had tons of other similar stuff in that price range. I would def. look into refurbished/used-- you can get lightly used great chairs for dirt cheap relative to retail prices.

Yup legit, rare brown real leather cover it seems. I'm sitting on my Leap V2 with coat accessory (japan sourced) that's in place instead of the lumbar adjustment that slides. Looking for Advice on Choosing a Reception Desk for My Small Business Office
It depends on your "check in" process. I would recommend a higher counter-type, because you can get one and off a stool easier than a chair, when you have to move around, reach for clip boards, etc. If it's just a traffic cop type reception, then a sitting position works. Also consider what it looks like when approaching, which is why I steer away from glass (which typically looks green, too). You need the material to be able to take abrasion, as people plop all sorts of things on the counter when they need to sign something or are looking through a gear bag. If you don't like staff eating and drinking at their desks, then provide some side screening. Your people deserve to be able to drink in between clients, so ask them to keep it set aside, but within reach. If you need storage, I suggest not having drawers, since they get left open in a traffic zone. Use cubbies, a short hutch on a work table, or narrow (paired) cupboard doors, since the swing is less than wider doors, even though wider is less expensive. I happen to be partial to old Steelcase furniture.

You need to go with a commercial grade office chair. I'd take a look at Steel Case Gesture. Not cheap but hopefully you can find it used. For reference I'm about 295# and 6'3, and haven't any issues with the chair in the last 4 years. I also have a Herman Miller Embody. It's also a good chair for the last 11 years (partner uses it now). I gave it to them and got the Gesture because I wanted a chair with a solid locking back.

Second the leap. Maybe personal preference but I had a leap v1 at work that I loved and they swapped me out for a leap v2, which I do like but not as much as I liked the v1. I bought a refurbished leap v2 for home as well, which I found very lightly used on Facebook marketplace for a very reasonable price ($150 I believe). I like the leap v2, but I loved the leap v1, which to me was much more comfortable

If you have an Office Furniture Liquidator near you, that's the way to go. If not, maybe try Facebook Marketplace. Offices are empty these days, so you can probably find something way better than your average retail store has for less. I prefer Steelcase over Herman Miller. I've had a couple Steelcase chairs that were fantastic and I didn't pay more than $200 for either of them. You can also buy new cylinders if you really love the chair.

In my experience, good quality office chairs have been more comfortable than “gaming” chairs. I like the mesh wire backed Steelcase chairs. Back when everyone was going WFH you could find them pretty cheap.

+1 to this, and well under $1k used. Also look for used office supply/furniture stores in your area. In lots of major metros post Covid/WFH, there are fewer butts in seats, and some offices have downsized. Fancy chairs that were set up for office workers are now sitting in some shady guy's strip mall furniture store. I got an Aeron chair for $530USD from a room full of them, so I got to try the different sizes and find the most comfortable one for me. (And not just Aerons, there were also the nice Steelcase chairs, etc)

OP, take these recs with a grain of salt. I never heard of this brand before this week, and suddenly there's a giveaway they're promoting on Reddit and this comment is on top of a "recommend me a chair" thread. I think they're astroturfing. Most would tell you that "gaming chairs" is a meaningless label meant to shovel trash to you, and that something by Herman Miller, Steelcase etc would be much better, and they're often available refurbished on on the used market from office cleanouts.

Yep, used Steelcase or used Herman Miller Aeron depending upon what feels good for you. Depending upon your area, they can often be found between $250-300 used. Check places like Craigslist or FB Marketplace and wait for a good price to come up.

I permanently injured my back slinging boxes for UPS in my 20s, I've tried 4 or 5 chairs since then. Not only is the leap V2 the only chair that makes my back feel better, it's also the only chair that doesn't exacerbate the problem. I guess everyone is just different.

As someone who had a sibling, same parents, who would regularly break and steal my things. I feel your pain deeply and I'm sorry people are being jerks without knowing the background of your situation. For the chair I was recommended Steelcase since HM was out of my grad student budget. I got a barely used Steelcase Series 1 for under $100. I tried all the versions in store first and had to be patient watching every second site. I live in a tech hub so honestly it didn't take long maybe 3 weeks. But you can get a really good chair at a great deal. Ask for whatever your dad's chair cost in today's market plus a realistic added amount because "I can't look for a great deal because I need it now". My parents pushed back but after while learned to accept I was serious.

I have had this Autonomous chair for about 4 years. Gets nearly daily use and has held up reasonably, except for fabric deterioration on the seat bottom. I would recommend getting the non-fabric version if anticipating heavy use This is not a BIFL chair, though. Materials and fabric on HON, Herman Miller, Steelcase are better. If I were to do it over, I’d rather get a used one of those than Autonomous.

The ergonomics of the Leap is far superior to the Eames executive chair. Aesthetically, the Eames are more appealing. I have the Eames chairs around my conference table. They don’t have the adjustments or long-sitting comfort of my Steelcase. As I said, Steelcase, Human Scale or Herman Miller are probably the best office chairs.

I actually have both of these chairs right now in my house, my wife uses a leap V2 that I bought used a few years ago, and she got a killer deal on an embody through her work so during COVID we picked that up so we both had nice chairs for WFH. I prefer the embody, but only by a little. The leap is excellent, so much so that I have one at my work as well (embody was over the budget for office chairs), but if money wasn't the chief consideration, I find the embody more form fitting on my back, and it's more breathable which I appreciate.

I can’t speak to the comparison directly, but I can attest the leap is fantastic. I’ve had it for about 1.5 yrs and use it every day for 5-6 hrs working from home and looks and feels brand new still. It has some great customization and support for my back, legs, and arms. I can’t see the Embody being worth an extra 250.

I think I’d only recommend the embody over the leap to someone who was too fat to fit in the leap. The embody was great when I was obese. Now that I’m not, it feels too big.

I find the steelcase gesture (and leap) way more comfy. You can adjust the arms on the gesture in more ways which makes a difference if you game or use your phone at your desk and the seat depth adjustment also makes a big difference, which isn't available on the aeron. But everybody is different, so totally get it if you love the aeron more.

I've said this about five times here. Steelcase Gesture. The only chair I've found that's comfortable for more than eight hours. The arms have a unique adjustment that actually lets them support your arms while typing. I do use an additional gel cushion for my extra bony ass.

Apparently mesh is the popular choice. I’ll throw my two cents in. I have a refurbished steel case leap v2. It’s generally considered the cushion counterpart to Herman Miller’s Aeron mesh chair. I love it. For the pros and cons in my research: Herman Miller Aeron is mesh and therefore breathable. It is a very adjustable chair, effectively able to conform to your body. The bad part, is that you basically have to sit in it with good posture and have the sizing right to get a comfortable sitting experience. I’m a bigger dude so I was nervous about that, plus sometimes I like to have poor posture (yes I know it’s bad). The steel case leap v2 provides a nice comfortable experience generally. It also has plenty of adjustments available for good posture comfort, and I’ve had no regrets. The downsides are less breathability in the back which is very important for some, and it has a shorter sitting period (chair cushions are usually rated for hours of use in a row, where they gradually compress over time and need time to basically reform themselves. I went from a two hour chair prior to the leap which I think after the refurb is rated for 6-8 hours and it’s been fine for me all work day with a lunch break)

For under $1000, check out Secretlab Titan EVO 2022 (great for heavier guys, super comfy for long gaming sessions) or Steelcase Series 1 (solid ergonomics, durable). If you want more cushion like a La-Z-Boy, try Serta’s Big & Tall Executive chair. All have swivel and wheels. Test a few if you can!
