  Buy new or replace seat cushions?

  A BIFL (or close to it) sectional is going to be $10,000 and up. In the USA, American-made BIFL brands are Taylor King, Hancock and Moore, Century Furniture, Sherrill Furniture, Vanguard Furniture, and Stickley. In terms of seat cushion foam, I'd look for a foam density of 2.5 lbs. or more. Any densities 2 lbs. or less will not be as durable. Keep in mind a higher density foam tends to be firmer although this is not always the case.

  What’s the most comfortable and durable furniture you own?

  King Hickory and Stickley sofas are excellent. I have 4 king hickory sofas and they look like the day I bought them (survived 2 kids and 2 cats with ease) plus they’re comfy as heck.

  What’s a small upgrade you made that ended up being way more impactful than expected?

  We got a Persian rug that's made from wool and I swear nothing stains it. I have 3 kids, some in diapers, and they make a mess. All I need is water and a towel and it comes out. I got it from stickley 75% off. The guy selling it told me only use water to clean it. I didnt think it would work, but sure enough its SOLID.

  Nothing from box stores, this includes pottery barn, RH, or C&B. And nothing that shows up at your doorstep in boxes (cough* love sac cough*) Look for King Hickory or Stickley if you can swing it. Flex steel is okay but quality has been declining ever since they started selling to Costco.

  best sofa that will last

  We replaced a terrible Crate & Barrel sofa with two great sodas that we love.  First question is budget: If you have $2500 or less to spend, just get what you like and keep it moving.  If you have $4000+, try to find a good local store that carries regional brands you probably have never heard off. I’m in Chicago, so we got sofas made by Smith Brothers of Berne, Indiana. They were not cheap before any customization and took several months to build and deliver. This was 2021 though, so production may have picked back up.  Their website is dated and the designs are pretty basic but sitting on them in a store was night & day compared to C&B, West Elm, etc or internet brands like Joybird.   These small furniture manufacturers aren’t as common as they used to be, but they are around. My mom found one in Texarkana, Texas of all places. But they are expensive compared to other options.  If you search this sub for Stickley you will find some other good recommendations.

  Avoid the box stores and go to your local regional mom and pop furniture store. Stickley and King Hickory are excellent options and easily found around the country.

  Too few details to start: do you want leather or fabric? Manual or power movement? USA or Canada? Fabric will be cheaper than leather and manual movement is cheaper than powered. $1,200 isn't a BIFL budget sadly. That is budget furniture, unless you're willing to buy used. See r/Frugal. BIFL or very close brands made in the USA would be Taylor King, Hancock and Moore, Century Furniture, Sherrill Furniture, Vanguard Furniture, or Stickley. Just as an example, a Hancock and Moore Cali Power Recliner in certain leathers from an online listing would be $4,729.73.

  Crate & Barrel isn't BIFL. 😆 The other poster got a very good deal, but that doesn't mean it's going to last 40-50 years. BIFL or very close USA-made sectionals start at $10,000. Sofas would be about $5,000 - $8,000 depending on size and upholstery mostly. BIFL or very close USA-made brands are Kindel Grand Rapids, Taylor King, Hancock and Moore, Century Furniture, Vanguard Furniture, Sherrill Furniture, and Stickley. La-Z-Boy and Flexsteel aren't BIFL. They've outsourced a lot of their manufacturing.

  Exactly. C&B is ply framed and notorious for sinking seating surfaces. They don't even post double rub ratings. Stickley and Flexsteel are quality for example. Pretty soon people are going to be posting stuff from Ikea on BIFL. God forbid you point it out or you are a jerk. 🙄

  Id try to get it reupholstered and new cushions. Or at least get a quote. If you need to replace, C&B’s quality has gone downhill imo. Look at King Hickory or Stickley instead.

  Keep the dogs off of the couch. From what you've said here, I would get a seamstress to make a slipcover for it. May be $1k, but it'll keep it going in the playroom a lot longer. But... BIFL recommendations... With kids and dogs, I'd go for leather, and make damn well sure it is full-grain genuine leather. If it says Bonded leather anywhere on it, it is junk. The leather should be made of leather, no polyurethane, no latex or synthetic binders... Just full grain leather. That isn't to say that cloth won't last as long, just that in my experience, leather is hardier and easier to clean. But I also have a 70ish year old sofa that is on its 2nd reupholster job, with cloth, and its in great condition... just kinda stained. Hancock and Moore is probably the best until you get into custom bespoke stuff. My parents H&M Sofa is probably 40 years old and while it certainly doesn’t look brand new, it still looks nice and is comfortable to sit in. Stickley is probably just as good as H&M for cloth, and 1/2 step down for leather. Next, there is Bradington and Young, Classic Leather, Smith Brothers, American Leather... probably some others. They’re after the H&M or Stickley customer that just can’t stomach the price. Some corners are cut, workforce isn’t paid as much, plywood frame instead of solid maple. Still probably a BIFL product for 99% of consumers, still made in USA, company will stand behind it. Then you get into the Flexsteel, Bernhardt, Palliser. Now we're still USA, but a lot of corners are cut. If it is reclining, the Mechanisms are imported, workmanship is done for speed - not quality, frames are plywood and stapled instead of jointed, foam quality is a notch down. If leather, you start getting into vinyl or bonded leather secondary surfaces, large gaps in joints and the like. Stitching isn’t as tight, etc. Then there is La-Z-Boy. They’re not what I’d call junk, but not what I’d call good either. It’s the lowest I personally would consider, but furniture snobs would call them bottom of the barrel. I’d call them just above that. Bottom of the barrel will be Ashley, Natuzzi, some other department store brands. Faux leathers, thin flexing frames, light duty mechanisms, cheap cores, cardboard over the arm-cap. You can sit in it in the store and it will just feel cheap and not durable. Imagine an old person who has to basically fall into a chair to sit down, or a fat person, or a drunk person, or a kid jumping in. It won’t last. Then your outliers: the Chinese imports. Some of it is really good, like Hooker. Probably about as good as a Bradington Young (same ownership), maybe the finish isn’t quite the same, but the structure probably is - just made using $2/hour Chinese labor. Some is horrible (what you’ll find in Costco or Walmart, and I’m a Costco fanboi and I say that). IKEA is probably in the Chinese category-some is good, some isn’t.

  Best High Quality Couches?

  I have a Stickley leather sofa that is still like new besides some scratches from a cat. We’ve had it 15 years I think. We also have chair from them that gets way more use and it’s still in good condition.

  Neither Ashley nor La-Z-Boy are BIFL quality whatsoever. Avoid. Flexsteel, Ethan Allen, Pottery Barn, Crate & Barrel, and West Elm aren't worth the money either. The higher quality made in USA brands are Kindel Grand Rapids, Taylor King, Hancock and Moore, Sherrill Furniture, Century Furniture, Vanguard Furniture, King Hickory, and Stickley. I don't know your budget. But from most showrooms, expect to pay around $5,800 for a 90"-94" wide stationary fabric sofa from the suggested brands. (Assuming prices haven't greatly increased since early 2024.) You can check each brand's website for dealers in your area.

  In terms of higher quality USA brands, have a look at Kindel Grand Rapids (specifically their "Kindel" and "Karges" lines), Taylor King, Hancock and Moore, Century Furniture, Vanguard Furniture, Sherrill, and Stickley. Many American brands tend to be traditional to transitional in style, although there may be a few modern models. Himolla, a German brand, offers more modern styling. Their motion mechanisms (e.g., reclining, movable headrests, arms, etc.) are very high quality. High end European sofas start around $10,000 from the likes of B&B Italia. Other brands can get way more expensive (Poltrona Frau, Minotti, Baxter, etc.).

  Alternative to Article Timber Sofa

  Stickley has a few MCM pieces that are close. Excellent quality. Whatever you wind up with, if you want BIFL, don’t get something from a big box store or something that gets shipped to your door in 50 boxes drop shipped from overseas.

  King Hickory or Stickley are great brands to look at and readily available and made in North Carolina which is the furniture capital of the US. If you want anything remotely BIFL avoid big box stores and anything that shows up on your doorstep in a million boxes.

  Oversized chaise longue

  I didn’t dig through the catalog - but we bought Smith Brothers of Berne. It’s like over 7 years old, have three little kids who are HARD on it. Held up amazing, no spring seats, no feeling hard edges of wood in the arms, cushions still very plum and firm, no sagging. Off tie top of my head other quality brands - Hooker, Stickley, Hancock and More. If you want BIFL - wayfair isn’t going to do it. If it’s not worth doing reupholstery, it’s not BIFL.

  You won't find a new BIFL sofa for $3,000 or less. I'd expect a USA-made 90"-92" wide fabric sofa to be $5,500-$6,000 in most showrooms. Prices may differ a bit since I explored them early in 2024. As for comfortable, I can't know what that means. But generally this is reflected by way of a foam cushion's Indentation Load Deflection (ILD) or Indentation Force Deflection (IFD). A lower number generally feels softer and a higher number feels firmer. As another person says, you will need to buy used to find BIFL. Kindel Grand Rapids, Taylor King, Hancock and Moore, Century Furniture, Sherrill Furniture, Vanguard Furniture, and Stickley are great brands.

  I sold furniture for years and at very BIFL focused regional family-run store with a couple locations. If you’re located in the NC area (the furniture capital of America) you could order something custom for this price. If not, you’re better off ignoring any sofa that shows up at your doorstep in pieces. They’re made overseas and are not good quality from the wood to the fabrics used regardless of their marketing promises of being “washable”. IMO you’re right on the cusp of some truly great craftsmanship available from King Hickory or Stickley. Both made in NC but readily available almost everywhere. Excellent quality hardwood frames and more importantly the quality of the textiles used is 2 steps above anything else near that price range. Just go sit on one and you’ll see what I mean. FWIW I no longer work there (another lifetime ago) but I now own 3 King Hickory sofas, they’re 15 and 10 years old and look like the day we bought them. Oh, and is something should break or tear they’re designed to be repaired too which is a huge plus.

  You will not find a new BIFL quality sofa for $1,600 sadly. That is lower quality and low budget furniture. Flexsteel, Ashley Furniture, Ethan Allen, Thomasville, Broyhill, and La-Z-Boy aren't high quality. West Elm, Crate & Barrel, and Pottery Barn are typically mediocre. Article is likely the same. Higher quality or close to BIFL is Kindel Grand Rapids, Taylor King, Hancock and Moore, Vanguard Furniture, Sherrill Furniture, Century Furniture, and Stickley. These sofas are made in the USA with domestically made materials; the occasional motion mechanism and fabrics may be imported. I got a quote from a Mainline Philly dealer for a Taylor King "Taylor Made" (custom program) sofa. This was January/February 2024. At 92" wide in a "Plush" depth and Grade 34 fabric, it would have been \~$5,800 before sales tax. This would be a typical price from most dealers for the higher quality brands I mentioned above.

  ISO BIFL cozy couch/sofa/sectional that also sleeps!

  King Hickory or Stickley make great sleepers. And are BIFL quality. I’ve never even heard of Annabei and can only imagine it’s not great quality. IMO build a modular sectional with the sleeper on the side you won’t use as much in your daily lives.

  You'd be better off looking for a store that carries quality brands. Stickley is the one I favor, but there are others that offer BIFL quality.
