Looking for a new daily driver work vest.
Skip softshell at the start here because it feels fine on a rack but once you scrape it across rough kit it goes downhill fast... Wind at 10k ft can slice through light stuff so the fabric carries the load more than the logo on it and tin cloth works mostly because the canvas is tight enough to matter without any drama Look for canvas around 10 to 14 ounce with proper paraffin or beeswax in it and make sure it is not just a quick spray job that fades out after a short stretch For insulaton, simple polymer batting like Climashield or Thinsulate usually keeps its shape while cheap fleece can end up a lumpy sweat trap Zipper should be a YKK number 8 or number 10 in brass and coil zips in the cold can go wrong fast Iron and Resin’s Rambler Vest and the Stormy Kromer waxed vest can tick these boxes if stock ever appears again and you might need to watch a few shops because availability shifts all the time and it can be a bit of a chase but worth it if you want something that works year round at altitude

Alternatives to Filson
I have a Stormy Kromer wool vest that I love. Put it through hell and back, camping and fishing, and it’s held up perfectly

Alternatives to Filson
Be got the Stormy Kromer Mackinaw in addition to the Filson (mod 90s and modern), so I can directly compare. First off, I prefer Stormy Kromer as a small family owned business made in Michigan over corporate Filson. SK hats are awesome and I own half a dozen. Filson Mackinaw is still a better jacket IMHO, even their modern ones, but SK is very good also. SK feels softer. Filson has better pocket design, including that map pocket in back.

Winter hat for baldy who runs warm?
I completely agree with you regarding acrylic, and there's a reason it's so prevalent in clothing - it's cheap. The biggest downside to the Stormy Kromer is the cotton liner. Once it gets wet it takes a long time to dry. But I've worn the hat hiking, in rain and snow, etc. It's not great if it's very windy or very cold, but it's a nice change from the standard beanie. It's also going to last a very long time, so that's cool. It's also sort of fun that while I am from MI and everybody is familiar with the hat, I am currently in Nashville and it's not a common sight. I've yet to see another one.

Winter hat for baldy who runs warm?
Merino wool is a game changer for the sweaty head problem - acrylic beanies are basically plastic bags that trap all the moisture. Those Stormy Kromer caps are solid too and way more breathable than regular beanies

Wool coat for the Northeast
You need to examine what kind of coat you want for the temperatures. It gets really where you are so there are a few styles that can work well: 1. Technical jackets with down insulation - Think canada goose, Fjallraven, Patagonia, and Rudsak. These jackets can last a long time if you buy their higher end jackets. Over time you might find wear in the seams and you can bring it to a good tailor for repair. My gf has had hers for 15 years and its still going, I see small wear and will bring it to a tailor sooner or later. 2. Wool jackets - Wool is a classic coat but will not be as insulating as your down choices. There are many styles of these coats that range from a peacoat to Filson style Cruiser jackets - Schott, Filson, Stormy Kromer, Weatherwool. These jackets last a long time and keep you fairly warm and theyll hold up just as well as the technical jacket but theyre a different style. layering is a must with these jackets IMO when its brick outside. 3. Shearling style jackets - These jackets offer a similar warmth to the wool jacket and relies on wool and leather. Certainly a different style for the Northwest but itll keep you very warm. Being leather, its the most expensive choice if you go with genuine sherling instead of polyester and cotton. N-1 Deck are a style of sherling jackets are very warm and you can find them from Buzz Rickson, The Real McCoys, Iron Heart. Schott also sells different styles of shearling jackets that you should look at Golden Bear is another company that does Shearling. All of these jackets can last a long time with enough care, the technical jackets needing the lesat amount of care to the wool and then finally the shearling which requires the most care. I think you have good choices and when it comes down to it, its about price and style. Used models of all the above are found on marketplace to ebay to grailed/depop/vinted.

Looking for a winter coat
Stormy Kromer makes a couple of great coats. They aren't parkas, but are great for being outside. They are pricey but have a life time warranty and they do have sales on a pretty regular bases. I've had one for the last 4 winters and love it. Duluth has their Whaleback coats on sale right now, I just got one and it seems like a solid heavier winter coat, waterproof with a hood.

I have to spend $150 at amazon this week
Swiss army knife and a good flashlight like an OLIGHT or Fenix... Also a good lighter. Zippo is a BIFL... Depends where you are going if it get cold a stormy kromer hat. If it's warm, some sort of hat for warm weather (sorry no opinion)

How are the mighty fallen
Weather wool is be all accounts great. When I was considering a new winter coat, the owner personally Skype me and walked me through why their fabric was different. Even mailed me fabric samples from the US to Europe. I would really look at Stormy Kromer as well

Whats your suggested BIFL list?
In cookware a cast iron pan is easily the lowest cost thing I can think of that will be BIFL. A good stainless steel pan will be BIFL. Faribault wool blankets. Stormy Kromer double mackinaw coat. Dehen1920 sweaters. I agree with the other poster about KitchenAid stand mixers, a good chef's knife, and carbon steel woks. I'm not sure if Filson has kept up their quality but I have had tin cloth heavy waxed cotton bib overalls and a packer coat for many years and they are really tough. Most people don't want wood furniture anymore and you can get entire dining room sets made out of oak or cherry for a few hundred bucks on places like NextDoor or OfferUp. Some of these sets are 50 years old and will last another 100 years if given basic care.
