The sun beam mattress pad works well for the bed. I am a chronically cold girlie in a northern climate so I am very committed to also having an electric blanket. Sadly they die every few years. I’ve just accepted it and purchase at Costco where I can return if they die too quickly.

This won’t work for your coach, but I have had good luck with Sunbeam electric mattress pads. I think mattress pads work better for heating your bed because they’re under you, and heat gets trapped under your blankets instead of going out into the room. Also (this is my theory, anyway), since it stays spread evenly on your mattress, it doesn’t get wadded up or twisted, which I think means fewer failures from wires and connectors moving and getting pinched, etc. They have several models, but I splurged on a fancier one that has dual temperature controls, so my wife can have her side warmer or cooler than mine.

RIP to this inadvertent BIFL toaster
You might be able to fix it, but its a good opportunity to get an old Sun Beam with radiant control and auto drop. They are gorgeous and very satisfying to watch as the toast auto lowers/rises slowly.

What's a purchase under $50 that has genuinely improved your daily routine?
There are 2 electronic devices that I genuinely think will still be kicking when im on my deathbed that I own and they both were bought this year while thrifting but are way older than me that I often use one of them is the emerson 77648 fan a model of fan that was first manufactured in 1937 I bought mine thrifting for 10 dollars and I had to replace the power cord the grease and the oil in it but I sleep with it blowing in my face every night my 2nd one that I recently purchased is a sunbeam radiant control toaster mine is a 1950s model but they were manufactured long before that other than having to adjust the tension of the tray with a screw on the bottom of it it worked when I got it I'll likely replace its power cable aswell I paid 6 dollars for it at a goodwill just a few weeks ago I gotta say with this toaster no only does it eliminate the jump scares of modern toasters but it also toasts bread much faster than normal toasters pretty sure that's down to power draw

Sunbeam radiant control toaster literally can make perfect toast and its much faster at toasting than modern toasters also doesn't need to have a lever pushed down to toast ..you just pop your single or 2 slices of toast in it ..it will lower itself and instead of jump scare inducing popping up like most toasters do it slowly raises itself up aswell I recently got one (a model from the 50s) and other than needing to adjust the tension on the lowering/raising mechanism (done by a single screw on the bottom) it works flawlessly definitely cleaned it out thoroughly before using it ..it was definitely well loved aswell aslong as you maintain these they will last a lifetime

With no moving parts? An early 1900's Wagner cast iron skillet. If my 1800's dutch ovens count even though I use them every couple months, that. Moving parts? I have a pre-wwii jar opener I use regularly. Also several sets of hand tools like pliers. Electronic? I use a 1950's Sunbeam toaster regularly, and a 1970's Sansui stereo receiver daily. Vehicle? I have a 70's Lincoln that runs like a top with nearly all original parts besides wear items and belts/hoses.

American Bedding System
I keep hearing that the younger generations are ditching the flat sheet. Here is why I think that's ludicrous: High quality materials: I could never, ever afford to have a quilt/duvet cover/comforter that is made out of what my sheets sets are made from. They are long lasting, all cotton, bamboo, or silk. Getting inside my sheets is like a pocket of luxury that would cost upwards of $500+ if I wanted that same feeling, sans flat sheet. Hygiene: My body goes between the fitted sheets and the flat sheet. Which means I can change my bedding to fresh clean bedding as often as I want because the duvet/bedspread never came in contact with my skin. This means I can sleep naked, fool around with my partner, have a sweaty sleep of nightmares- you name it, without having to deal with washing the duvet system and wrestling with a king duvet. For those of you who use duvets, especially a king size, you know what a pain it is to wrestle the duvet each wash. I wash my duvet insert maybe once a month and the cover maybe once every 2 weeks. I change my sheets, however, sometimes up to three times a week. There's no better feeling than crisp clean sheets and the flat and fitted sheet combo are what makes a consistently fresh bed possible. I keep multiple sets for winter (cotton flannel, thicker fabric) and airy light sets for summer. As for the duvet vs quilts/comforter/etc.: Duvets are the bifl option imo as well as the most versatile option. I sleep well in Michigan seasons (known for extreme winters and radical temp fluctuations year round) because I'm able to totally customize the duvet based on the weather. Also, invest in a heated blanket at least the length of the foot of the bed. Some folks avoid them but if you use them to warm up your bed vs sleeping through the night with them on, there's no issue. I have one the full size of our bed and it greatly helps our gas bill in winter. I got a Sunbeam King with dual controllers for less than $120.

I have the first model Braun hand stick blender, maybe early 90s? It still works! Several years ago I thought for sure it would break, it has a small crack, so I went on ebay and set alerts and all that to snag a good one and finally snagged one, never used, still in its box!! I haven’t had to pull it out yet, maybe I didn’t need it. I can’t understand why this thing won’t break, I’ve been wanting a new one my whole life 😂 After my old hand mixer gave out, which belonged to my mother from the 70s, I bought a Kitchenaid, it was a piece of crap and the mixers stripped out of the holders. I read reviews until I was exhausted and turned to eBay, set alerts, and sniped a professional Sunbeam hand mixer, looks almost exactly like my mom’s, only it is heavier and has a thicker cord. I’m not sure what year it is, it definitely looks like a 70s mixed someone put away and never used. I’ve used it for several years, it is a work horse, I also feel this is never going to break. I have my Vitamix, I think I bought it before 2010, maybe 2008? I got it at a fair, it had an extra pitcher for grains, but I used that for liquids just fine after the first tall pitcher finally leaked. I’ve since bought a stainless steel pitcher at Costco when they were there doing a demo. The salesperson said it would fit my old model, and it does, I love it. I think my old Vitamix could maybe grind concrete and not break. After my old Maytag washer broke after 18 years (it was after whirlpool took over, somehow it wasn’t a bad washer), I finally got a Speed Queen set. People say they are expensive, well, how many washers are you going to buy while this thing you could have had would live on and on. It’s going to outlive me, and that’s fine, it will be inherited and stay with the family.

I have a sunbeam that's been great, we have several. When ours "broke" it was really that the wires at the foot of the bed got twisted. Untwisted them and back to great. I just checked and we bough ours in 2017 so not quite BIFL but 8 years now, still going strong, two fulls and a queen.

I bought a Sunbeam T-9 toaster at the thrift store when I was 18 to take to college with me (it was old then). I still have it. I'm 68. My son wants to inherit it. It toasts as perfectly as it did the day I brought it home and tried it out, despite having had to replace the cord and dropping it at one point (slightly dented the top).

Definitely the way to go. I loved my Sunbeam heated mattress pad but I have acid reflux. You can't use a heated mattress pad with an adjustable base. I've been using a heated throw once I have the base adjusted so the wires don't get folded, and it only works about half as well.

Would also recommend a Sunbeam blanket. I've had one that got used regularly (except for the summer months) for about 6+ years. The fabric is a bit faded but still works well, no noticeable change in temperature. Stopped using it since I have a much nicer portable heater now, unfortunately it snores quite a bit and and has some problems with passing gas at night.

Just got wife a Serra heated blanket. It’s quite soft and warm, but I’ve no idea about how long it’ll last. Her previous was a no-name Amazon find that lasted for 2 years before it started to fail (cold spots). As far as mattress pads, we bought a Sunbeam about 4 years ago. It’s likely got another winter in it, but yeah, nothing with heating elements is going to last forever. The heat/cool cycles cause material stresses that just build over time.

I had one of these in the 80’s. When it would break I could take it to a Fix-it shop to have it repaired. I have a new Breville that’s a piece of crap. If it breaks it goes into a landfill. Read an article on how they’ve changed the metal in the coils so new toasters don’t do as good a job. Going to look for another vintage toaster.

After seeing the Videos of Technology Connections a few years ago I needed to own a toaster like this. It was a bit of a challange to find one in continental europe. The one I found was advertsed "converted from 120V to 230V" and came with the correct plug. Price was around 150€, crazy price for a toaster. After recieving it it turned out, that the conversion performed by the previous owner was to simply change the plug, internally the Toaster was still setup for 120V. If i were to plug it in, it would have pulled almost 5 kW from the wall. After checking the repair video from Technology Connections and looking at some manuals, I decided to properly re-wire the toaster. Original Heating Coil resistance was 10.900 Ohm, for 230V I needed to up the resistance to 40.047 Ohm. Found the proper heating wire to make new coils. After the change the final resistance came out to 41,14 Ohm. The toaster can now live its 2nd life in Continental Europe connected to 230V. Recommendations for heated blanket?
Same! Two months since your comment, and the original post is from a year ago, but I'm interested since my heated throw just died, I'm searching for a new one...it should be a simple online purchase. While it's great that we all have the luxury of reviews galore these days, I'm finding that scrolling through endless reviews (good, bad, or indifferent) complicates the search! I've been searching for the best-rated heated throw since 9 am (it's now 1:16 pm). Each review is contrary to the last. The throw is amazing/the throw is crap. The throw doesn't heat/the throw heats quickly, the throw sheds + doesn't launder well/the throw is soft + fluffy + launders beautifully... The comments on this post are helpful (searching for new/old stock is a great suggestion). The Berkshire recommendation is a good one, too (still available at Costco, but they only had white). My searches have revealed that many are disappointed with Sunbeam. While the name recognition is there, users mention how cheaply made the heated throws are, and even if it heats at first, will stop working soon after. Beautyrest, Brookstone, Serta, Westinghouse, and Black & Decker seem to have better reviews than the Amazon/Bed Bath & Beyond, Walmart-esque no-name heated throws but there are so many conflicting reviews! I don't know if some of the reviewers are extremely easy to please (and the others are all impossible to please), or if the various heated throw manufacturers have no quality control in place at all (one working heated throw off the assembly line is followed by a dud...and so on)?? I think I'm about to buy the Serta Malea Shaggy Heated Throw Blanket or the Brookstone Oversized Heated Throw Blanket or the Westinghouse Heated Throw Blanket (has the built-in, flat control), or the Sunbeam Royal Faux Fur Heated Throw (all on Amazon). Each one has simultaneous very good + very bad reviews. No grey area with any of them?! At least Amazon has a very generous return policy so if whichever one I go with doesn't perform well, it goes back. WHY is this difficult?! Since you commented two months ago, I'm curious what you ended up with?
