swann camera systems are pretty good, they're pricey though. But my family got one that was in the $500-$700 price range with eight cameras and a DVR. The way it works is that dvr is constantly recording and it saves footage going back to maybe a week or so and if something comes up you can save clips footage permanently. The truth is you don't need the majority of what cameras record because it's going to be pretty boring and not relevant. We hardwired our DVR and also connected it to a tv so we could just take a glance at it without having to wait for the super slow app to load. The TV is a small Vizio, nothing fancy but it works ok for what it is. The actual live feed will show a little icon to indicate that there's movement too. The swann system is something my family has had for about 7+ years and it's still going strong.

I got a bung of Swann indoor/outdoor cameras, and I love them. Good enough video/audio quality, wired/wifi connectivity, app control with no subscription. Halfway decent night vision, too.
