Mini Swiss Army Knife (or those cute fish ones from Mikov) were a hit last year. This year: the small Tweezerman nail kit (clippers, file, pushes) and tweezers, Ti-tape mini tape measure, Mooncat nail polish, an old embossing Dymo labeler, recipe cards (lots of options for these, I got cute ones from Paper Source), Smart Wool mittens, Aquaphor lip balm, and some fun candies from World Market. I try to make it functional but also some fun treats. Check out Boston General Store. That's often a first stop to spark inspiration for gifting for me.

My grandparents gave me a small Swiss Army knife when I was 8. I still have it 20+ years later — and it’s gotten me out of more jams than I can count. For a younger kid, maybe a quality piggy bank or a solid wooden toy that becomes decor later? Or even a lifetime library card moment — not tangible, but BIFL for the brain.

I got a swiss army knife from my grandpa when I was 6. When to try it out sharpening some sticks with my dad and almost immediately cut myself and started crying. Turns out when we got the blood washed off that I had barely pricked myself and most of the blood was actually from my dad. Learned a lot that day! Still got and cherish it! Although my grandpa once used the included toothpick and child me hadn't considered washing it, so that parts gone, and some years ago I wore out the spring on the scissors.

Kind of love this idea. A good quality leather wallet or a classic Swiss Army knife (when they’re older) could be something they keep forever. Even a nice fountain pen simple but meaningful over time.

Maybe when they see a bit older like 5 or 6 but a tiny Swiss army knife or a blade less version would be good. Let them carry around one, and when you need something, ask them for the tool. It will make them feel like they are important and helpful, that might be the best BIFL gift, a sense of self worth.

I asked for a really nice wooden box engraved with my son’s name, birthdate, weight, and height that we are using to store stuff like his first outfit and favorite toy and stuff. I hope he’ll keep it for years. Also, I still have my favorite stuffies from childhood but that’s a bit of a gamble. I would say something that holds up to being washed, bonus if it can easily be re-bought in case it’s a favorite. Nice but dainty jewelry can become an heirloom even. A nice Swiss Army knife would be a great gift for an older kid (I’d ask the parents first but probably around 10) that they’d keep for decades.

Many. But Swiss Army knives are high on the list. The big fancy ones just sit in a drawer and are rarely used. The smallest ones are actually the most useful on a daily basis. The "classic" is aptly named. Fits perfectly in your jeans coin pocket.

Looking for a good BIFL pocket knife.
Pocket knife only? Buck 110/112 series. They are heavy. For something lighter, Spyderco pm2 but it’s more expensive. Benchmade 940 as well but they are expensive for a pocket knife. Kershaw leek is a nice alternative to it. Avoid gerber and buck (either than 110/112), SOG as well Multitool knife? Swiss Army knife by far, they will last a lifetime. Leatherman for heavy use, particularly the higher end ones like the surge or wave or charge
