subscriptions are such a greedy practice for doorbell cameras, idk how they're approved. technology between diff manufacturers doesn't really differ that much, it's mostly the same, just make sure to go for ring and chime. rest is pretty much the same, i like tapo. it's from [tp-link](https://deo9gr5ha90bn.cloudfront.net/?q=GMKAO2088) and ive been using their products for a long time, def recommend

[I have one of these,](https://www.tapo.com/us/product/smart-camera/) you have to buy an SD card but nothing is in the cloud. I can view my camera on my phone and recharge it with a cable.

If you're paying monthly fees, you are doing it wrong. You get cameras with on board storage and free apps, you can download from the micro SD card as needed, or use DVR software for free on your computer and record to your hard drive. I don't pay any fees for my TAPO cameras or my SAANCE camera systems.

What are you running? I have Wyze, Tapo and Eufy, and none have subscriptions. All of them have microsd cards with continuous recording, except the battery cams don't have continuous recording. The downside to not having a subscription for the Wyze cams is that the cloud video is short and there's a gap between those videos, and I think it's the same for the other brands. That's not a big deal for me because I can view the continuous video on the microsd card from the app to see everything. I suppose another downside could be that if someone broke into the house they could also take the memory cards, but that's a risk I'm willing to accept. Some brands have a hub that can hold the videos, and the hub can be stored in a more secure location, so that's an option if I want to mitigate the stolen memory card risk.

I've used Tapo cameras for the last 8 years and have never paid storage fees. All videos are stored on the camera on a microsd card. I can monitor, control them and view storage on the app for free. They do have a cloud option, but I've never used it. Best consumer version IMO. Paid around $60 CAD for my three C200s

I use Tapo cameras with just SD card memory. My cameras are mounted along the roofline so no one is taking them. Cloud not needed.

Tapo/TP-link on most of their cameras has NVR support and also stores the data on an SD card that you can pull from when you use the app. I never would have bought them but I was picking them up for as low as $1 each at auction. I strongly strongly suggest using an ethernet cable instead of wifi. I setup a playlist for the cameras and can cycle through them on my PC or with VLC on my phone. I also have them connected to my jellyfin server so any tv locally can watch them if they want to.

Seconding Tapo. I've had the doorbell and three indoor swivel cams for a few months and they've been really good recording to SD. I'm coming from Wyze cams which turned into useless crap over the years.

My Tapo cameras have a a few options; cloud, SD card, or RTSP. I’m using both RTSP with my home server and SD because I had the SD cards before my home server. No subscription necessary. I’ve also got a Aqara cam and a bunch of Wyze cams that don’t require a subscription. I don’t recommend the Wyze cams though, at least mine had an RTSP firmware available. The Aqara works with HomeKit but that needs a subscription, but there is an SD option also.

I agree it's complete bullshit. I bought cameras from Tapo as they record to a local storage device. You _can_ pay for their cloud storage if you want, but they don't force it. They've been great so far; very happy.

I like TAPO. It’s from tplink they store your data on an as card. I got them because ring want to charge me double annual subscription in order to call my phone when the door bell button was pushed. This is critical to me because I can’t get ring notifications while driving but I can get phone calls. TAPO does it for free. I tried eufy but there was a delay on n the call (possibly my network is not optimized and it’s on my end) TAPO worked for me out of the box no subscription if I don’t care about uploading video to the cloud.

I use Tapo cameras. They have subscriptions as an option but it also has local storage options, so I just use an SD card to capture footage. If it fills up then the oldest videos are automatically deleted to make room.

Tapo C210. I added 128gb memory cards. 24/7 recording with motion and human events. No monthly. Paid ~$55 to set up two cameras this way a few weeks back.

I used to use an Amcrest DVR system with some wifi cameras as well. Had that for 10yrs or so w/o paying any subscription. 10 y/o cameras are pretty crap at this point so we sprinkled in Yi camera - mini sd cards for playback. Those were pretty great until they started putting unskippable ads upon app open. Why do they put game ads in a video surveillance app? So quickly got rid of those. Finally installed Tapo (TPLink brand) cameras to replace both. Seem great so far. Easy install, some battery/solar powered cams. Mini SD. No monthly fee. Can also add a DVR type of hub which can include a larger storage device. 5*

I have Tapo security cameras at my house that record locally to Micro SD cards. I have a Lorex camera system at my office that records locally to a DVR. Neither one requires a subscription.
