My kids are tweens/teens now, so my feedback is in retrospect. Boden was my favorite for special occasions. I have many pieces (pinnies and tees) saved. Hanna for pjs and babies. Tea for every day, but it fades. Gap and Cat & Jack for school. Now that my kids are older, I shop a lot at Zara, Abercrombie, and still Target.

LL Bean kids clothes are durable and last years. But my kids outgrow them so fast it’s hardly worth it. We usually just buy Amazon brand, Primark or Cat and Jack from Target, they tend to be more affordable then a lot of secondhand stores and they last for as long as they outgrow them - about 6 months to a year.

With that said I agree with above, kids move in and out of sizes too often so we do a lot of target/cat and jack since it’s priced right. But we do splurge some on some boutique brands for the kids when we want them to dress up nice.

We get most of our child’s clothing from Target, specifically the All in Motion line. Believe it or not, they’re pretty hard wearing. He always outgrows them rather than them wearing out or starting to look ratty. We do get more expensive outerwear, we like the kids down jackets from Bean, and some Lands End jackets and Patagonia jackets have been very nice. We get him decent shoes, Merrells and Xeros. Typically we don’t spend a lot on clothing for him because he grows. I can’t praise the target clothes enough. We have a hyper 11 year old boy that’s always moving, always riding bikes, playing outside, nerf battles with neighborhood kids, getting dirty, all the things. Those clothes really hold up.

I got my towels at Target and Costco. I washed them with All Free&Clear and bleach. Zero fabric softener. Fabric softener ruins towels and doesn't allow them to dry as well. And bleach your towels. Proper bleach usage will not result in white bloches.

I was going to vouch for the Target Threshold sheets and can’t say I’ve had the problem with the pillow cases but I fold the pillowcases hot out of the dryer. (I check my bedding halfway through drying and pull the pillow cases out when I’m unballing the sheets.) I will say though I think the pillowcases are a little short.

A $10 wooden drying rack from Target. At least it was $10 20 years ago when I bought it right out of college. All these years later, it is still as functional as ever and it not only it saved me on electricity bills but also helped my clothes last much longer by them not being exposed to the dryer.

Looking for a really warm blanket
I forgot what sub I was on, or I wouldn't have commented. Bit that being said, I've had a cotton quilt from target for 20 years and it's still as good as new, just softer. I can't handle wool, so to each their own. I will add not all of their quilts are the same quality. The cheaper ones are made cheaply. Sure, Amish is probably better.

Percale Orgnaic cotton Organic cotton + wool Target is probably the best bang for the buck. We've got a set that still looks new after 4 years. Quince LL bean. Best value for money we've used is in this list. We rotate between 3 brands and all are holding up VERY well.

I've gotten several hampers from Target that are lined with a cloth bag. When it's time to do laundry, you just lift the bag out of the hamper. They look nice, and the bag is easier to carry than a rigid container (plus, you can wash the bag itself, too).

I have bought Target brand, Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware and Frette. PB and FH are the same, dense and sturdy. Target is the softest and fluffiest. Frette stitches came undone nearly immediately. Least worth it.

Longtime LL Bean percale sheet lover here. Their quality has varied over time. It’s bizarre. I guess supplier issues… Sometimes you get fantastic sheets, cool and crisp. Sometimes softer. Sometimes scratchy for a dozen washes before they soften up. You always ended up with great sheets, but what can I have? The package seemed to vary over the years. I needed a sheet set in a hurry last year and hit up Target for their percale, and I may never go back. A fraction of the price, and every bit as good as LL Bean's. The elastic is even better at accommodation a non pillow top mattress.

I really like the IKEA highest level sheets (I believe they are the Natjamsin or something like that). If you go to the store they will tell you which are the highest quality. They are inexpensive but comfortable and crisp. Also I like Target Threshold sheets. I only like cool, crisp, or sateen-ish so I think we have the same preferences and these work for me for not much money at all. I've tried lots!

I really am not a fan of Simple Human. We had one in our kitchen and it just started falling apart after a few years. There’s too much plastic in their construction. We went and got a few stainless steel ones from Target and they are holding up better than the Simple Human ones ever did. At the end of the day it’s a metal box for my trash, it doesn’t need to be handmade in France.

Wirecutter or Consumer Reports for things I can't touch and try myself, like electronics and tools - they do not sell things, but they TEST things and rate them. Truthfully, with experts and parameters. (Hooray for ethical journalism!) Then you can click their link to buy the item on spamazon or wherever. Big box store (target, walmart, et al) for things I can touch and evaluate myself, like trays and baskets.

What are the best scissors for everyday use?
My son loses scissors, so I go through a lot of them. I buy packs at Costco once a year, and those are great. But my favorites that I hide from him are Ikea sewing scissors from their sewing kit, gold handle scissors from the Asian grocery store, small embroidery scissors shaped like birds with long beak blades, and a gold pair from Target that they only sold for one season.

Summer blanket recommendations?
Target sells a waffle weave cotton blanket that comes as large as a King. We have FOUR of them now because they’re SO good and we live in a very hot climate. They hold up magnificently well, wash and get softer over time, and work for living in a place that’s regularly over 100 degrees.

Hello! I'm Annemarie Conte, an editor at Wirecutter, and I definitely think you should try waffle-weave towels. Our pick is Onsen, which run about $45 apiece and are truly wonderful, but the Target Casaluna are also really nicely made and only about $11 each. (Target's textiles generally punch above their weight.) They are definitely "scratchier" than plush towels, so will be different from what you're used to. If you want to touch them in person, Macy's carries Onsen and obviously Target is Target. I recently tested the Quince version for an article (with the help of Jackie Reeve, our powerhouse textiles reviewer) and they were okay, but I'd definitely consider Target or Onsen over them. Overall, though, any towel is going to have an issue when it comes into contact with a sharp object, whether it's your cat's nails or your own nails, earrings, etc. (I was surprised but also not surprised at how much our textiles experts think about nails!). So that's definitely something to keep in mind.

What’s a kitchen item you bought once and never had to replace?
I have a sturdy stainless steel colander that was a wedding gift 22 years ago, and looks pretty much brand new. I think it was a Target brand (but the top quality tier.) There seem to be many similar options though this one is discontinued. The handles are all in one piece, and it has a raised base. Very sturdy stainless steel. I throw it in the dishwasher multiple times a week. Never a ding or a scratch.

Confession: I only buy clothes and most items made pre-2020
I generally just feel the material, I look for heavy cotton or things that just generally feel high-quality. However, I have had amazing luck with PacSun jeans. They don’t shrink and have held up amazingly. Lilly Pulitzer is quite expensive and gendered, but the quality is there. Old Navy is even okay. Actually, I’ve had a lot of Target clothes hold up as well!

What to buy for upkeep of house as a 22M?
I have Target sheets and Target towels that fell apart within 2 years. The stitching at the seams comes apart, the color faded in splotches. Even the kitchen towels have threads coming undone. But, okay. Maybe you could get a set 15 years ago that would last a long time but I’m not sure that’s true anymore. The battery vacuum… mine has been solid. I think I’ve had it since 2015/2016. Works great, easy to use. If I have to replace a battery some day that doesn’t seem like that big of a deal in exchange for all the benefits.

Found some BIFL favorites at the thrift this weekend!
It also depends how you treat the clothes. I’ve had clothes (t shirts) from Uniqlo, Target, and H&M last for close to a decade. If I could judge, I’d say only H&M has gone down in fabric quality, but if you don’t go crazy in the wash on them I feel they’ve lasted quite some time. Of course, what you use the clothes for is important. Daily wear to office is very different than use in active sport, for example.

What makes a good duvet cover? What do you suggest?
I know this is an old thread but it's a pet peeve the duvets never match the inserts, my preference being goose down, they usually measure the same no matter the brand but I've only ever found one duvet that had the same exact dimensions and it was from Target 🎯. It was their lower cost line, the more expensive Casa Luna had the annoying thing of being too long. It's just how they make them and it's ridiculous. I too have to have clean feet in bed!

The difference between generations…
Yeah I’ve got a lot of very cheap ikea, target and closetmaid (which are worse quality than the other two) flatpack furniture items that I got when I moved into my first college apartment and they’re all more than 15 years old now and they’ve held up perfectly through 5 moves. They’ve outlasted much higher quality furniture pieces that I bought or inherited that cost multitudes more, including an entire solid wood bedroom set that eventually all irreparably broke. That flat pack furniture is genuinely the oldest furniture I own now and not a single piece of it has ever broken.

I’ve had the same few ikea and target bookshelves (as well as several other similar flat pack furniture items from target including a desk, storage cubes and corner shelf unit) for over 15 years and they’ve survived 5 moves so far, some of those not even bothering to take them apart since a couple moves were across town at different life stages.
