  What’s the BIFL item that you love but everyone around you thinks is ridiculous?

  Imo, not for me, being that the bowls are still coated . While they sell spares I'm not keen on coatings being applied to cooking instruments. I went for a tatung instead as the bowls are straight stainless steel.

  considering the Toshiba mini rice cooker at $76, but unsure if it’s the right moment

  tatung deserves a spot on this BIFL list! it's simplicity with only an on-off switch means there's very little that will break on it. I think my grandpa's is still kicking.

  Tatung is legit super durable and no nonstick coating to worry about. Instant Pot is also a solid option if you want more versatility and stainless steel

  I went through this recently. Instant pot makes meh rice - better than nothing but if you are used to a proper rice cooker like cuckoo or zojirushi you will hate it. The pressure of the cooker changes the texture of the rice too much, even with the perfect amount of water. I did lots of experiments with differing water and cooking times because i *really* wanted it to work.  Tatung is the answer. Several people have suggested it. Entirely stainless steel so no weird Teflon flaking into your food. Rice is absolutely perfect. Better even than my cuckoo (which i stopped using because of Teflon problems).

  Shocked hasnt been mentioned. Tatung has like 95% of Taiwan market share. I'm told they are bullet proof and often handed down in Taiwan given they last so long. I too was looking for non stick. Works great, low frills so looks like it will last forever

  What’s a kitchen item you bought once and never had to replace?

  Kinda depends on what you cook, we're a mixed west/east cooking house so the list reflects that. And these have been collected across a 35 year span and frequent trips to both western and eastern restaurant supply shops, not all at once: Tatung steamer/rice cookers, Ohaus valor 3000 xtreme scale, vintage high carbon knives (mostly French), good Chinese cleaver (Master Wu Artillery Steel), Benriner mandoline slicer (blades are replaceable), carbon steel woks in two sizes, EZ Wok outdoor wok burner cart, cast iron and carbon steel pans, Vigor induction ready sauce pans in a variety of sizes, Russell Hobbs kettle and toaster when they were made in the UK, solid wood (olive, beech & bamboo) utensils (spoons, spatulas), Nordic Naturals muffin and cake tins, Vollrath half and quarter sheet pans, Vollrath heavy duty stainless bowels in a variety of sizes, heavy duty stainless steel measure cups and spoons, PYREX volumetric measuring cuts, Waring all metal commercial grade immersion blender (2 speeds, replaceable blades), Braun Universal Mixer, Vitamix blender (I honestly wouldn't buy this if I had it to do over, it's our most rarely used gadget). The food processor has been replaced (killed beyond repair a Cuisinart, bought a used Magimix, had just for year) and the KitchenAid Professional (HA) had to be repaired twice so we gave up and switched to the Braun for bread doughs and barely use it now. #

  Do you care about nonstick coatings?  I bought the Aroma Stainless Select to replace a 35+ year old National and I have zero regrets or complaints. It has one switch and that's it. Stainless steel inner pot, no PFAS and shit. I won't play cute tunes for you but it has earned its (small) place on my countertop. I got the one with a steamer basket, like $40 all in. Tatung would be my second choice if you want to spend hundreds

  I eat rice with every meal but I actually cool my rice and microwave it even with a fancy Korean rice cooker because it supposedly converts some of it into resistant starch that gets absorbed slower.  Also with rice cookers, the inner pot is the weak point if it's nonstick. You have to really baby it and make sure you never leave it in the sink because others in your house will scratch it up. Wash it immediately or just keep the empty pot in the cooker.  The other point of failure can be the non removable battery that powers the display/clock. They typically last at least a decade though and there are some tutorials on how to disassemble your rice cooker and install a new battery floating out there. The difficulty of doing this varies by model.  If you want a BIFL rice cooker though, the Taiwanese brand Tatung is known for their bulletproof rice cookers that have a stainless steel inner pot and cooks the rice a bit differently by steaming. I don't think most rice cookers, even the high end Japanese and Korean ones, are BIFL due to nonstick inner pots and non removable batteries.

  Tatung Rice Cooker, at least if you prefer simplicity as well. The outer pot is aluminium, the inner pot, lids and steaming accessories are all stainless steel. Runs on 220V. It's a very oldschool design and doesn't have logic, modes, a screen or anything, only 2 switches, but as far as I'm concerned that's fewer parts to break. Replacement bowls are available. I haven't had mine long yet but I've seen nothing either in reviews or handling the cooker myself that suggests it wouldn't hold up for a good long time. No complaints about how the rice turns out either. I also think the vintage look and colour options are cute but that's a matter of taste. The main hurdle was finding where to buy one in the EU, the TWEU online store was the only option I saw at the time. Much of the text on the site is still in Chinese even after selecting English, so that was a little adventure considering I don't know any, but it was straightforward enough to navigate and I received the rice cooker I wanted without issues.

  I've a 220V Tatung with a steel bowl, but it was quite expensive to import. Found it on eBay brand new from Taiwan. It makes great rice, can be used as a steamer too.

  Zojirushi v.s. Tiger Made in Japan rice cookers

  We are using Tatung that looks like 20 years old, it's a different routine to cooking but it is just as good so far. It's also versatile in function but basic in construction which I think this sub will appreciate
