Moccamaster. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong.
I had to grind a lot finer than I used to for a pour over. I ran a couple experiments to dial it in but went down in size a decent amount. It's not quite as good as a pour over but it's convenient to set it up the night before and use a wifi outlet to turn it on in the morning.

Moccamaster. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong.
Can confirm it’s great on Folgers grade coffee. I’d go with the hot plate version as you can throw the glass carafe in the dishwasher (gently, that glass is very thin).

Moccamaster. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong.
I’m a coffee professional, fwiw. My recommendation would be to keep the ratio you liked on your OXO. It really all comes down to grind size. My suggestion runs contrary to what most are saying here, and I’m going to encourage you to grind more coarse than you might think. There’s a high likelihood you’re getting less extraction with a finer grind size. Batch brews often benefit from a more coarse grind because of the distribution of fines at coarser grind sizes. Think coarse sea salt as a visual reference.

What’s the best coffee maker you guys have used??
Technivorm Moccamaster + Separate Grinder. This isn’t a single unit, but if you want great coffee every time, people swear by this combo. The moccamaster’s brew temp + flow is near perfect, and pairing it with a simple burr grinder makes a huge taste difference vs integrated grinders.

Let’s Talk Wirecutter: What Was Worth It and What Wasn’t?
Ditto. The drip section always fell apart and I hated the single dial control. I had to keep the user manual nearby. I moved to the technivorm and it runs flawlessly.

Technivorm with a $10 smart plug so you can start it brewing on a schedule or while you’re laying in bed in the AM. Machine is BIFL. When you have additional budget buy a Bartaza Encore grinder, also BIFL. Purchase high-quality freshly roasted beans and you are set for exceptional coffee without the labor or hassle of manual pour-over, french press, or the years long endeavor and thousands of dollars spend of learning how to pull great espresso shots.

Need a quality coffee maker
I have one, got it earlier this year after looking into upgrading. Happy with it. It makes better coffee than our old $70 built-in whole bean slicer one. And yes, slicer, the cheap blade coffee grinders aren't that good. Technivorm did have a bit of a sale recently for black Friday, so they do 'go on sale.' Coffee quality makes a difference too, whole bean with a good burr grinder is going to be fresher than pre ground, and that generally improves taste. We got an oxo conical burr grinder, it's a lot more consistent than blade grinders. That's under $100, you can certainly spend more. I guess it's not a need, you can use pre ground for a while and get a grinder later. But any pursuit of good coffee will lead to fresh ground from while beans. The last piece of the puzzle is maintenance/cleaning. You want a descaler (removes mineral build up) and a cleaner (removes oils). And do it on a regular cycle. Techniworm recommends every ~3 months. Dirty coffee machines will negatively impact flavor. It's not hard, just amounts to running several rounds of water through the machine.

I did pour-over coffee, aeropress, or moka pots for a long time and even had a pretty good espresso machine for a while. I got a Technivorm Moccamaster last year and love it. I've chosen my preferred bean, dialed in my grind size and amount on my grinder, and now I have consistently amazing coffee every morning, zero hassle, just joy.

Need a quality coffee maker
A BIFL coffee machine doesn’t have to be expensive, but some will be. What sort of machine is the Walmart one? I can explain a few of the terms you have seen but if you just want a recommendation for an awesome coffee maker that will last longer than you will, skip right to the bottom. The reason you get questions about “French press”, “drip coffee”, “espresso” etc. is because asking for a recommendation for a “coffee maker” is a bit like asking for a recommendation for a “food cooker”; it could mean a grill or a convection oven or an air fryer or a big green egg or a microwave or a camping stove. They’ll all do the same thing (cook food), but they’ll all do it slightly differently. So there are six basic types of coffee maker people tend to use at home if we don’t include Nespresso-type pod things (and we don’t; they’re not very good, horrible for the environment and *definitely* not BIFL). **Pour over coffee makers** are jugs that hold a filter; coffee grounds go into the filter, and hot water pours over the coffee grounds giving you coffee. Pretty much foolproof. You need filters for them. Definitely BIFL. A more-or-less top-of-the-range one will cost about £25. **French presses** (we call them **cafetières** in England) are glass beakers with a plunger and a wire mesh. You steep coffee in water, push the plunger down, and you’ll have some coffee. Easy to use. Easy to maintain. Definitely BIFL. A more-or-less top-of-the-range one will cost about £30. **Aeropress** is almost like a combination of the first two. A plastic cylinder holds coffee and hot water. Push a plunger down into it applies pressure to brew the coffee. Easy to use, easy to maintain. Was only invented in 2005 so can’t say if it’s BIFL yet. There are silicone seals etc that Inimagine would need to be replaced. The glass version, Aeropress premium is £150. **Drip coffee makers** are basically the same as pour-over coffee makers but they will heat water, keep coffee warm etc. Good ones *can* be BIFL but require some maintenance. A more-or-less top-of-the-range one will cost about £250. **Moka pots** are traditional little metal pots you can use on a stovetop to make espresso. Easy to maintain. Definitely BIFL. A more-or-less top-of-the-range one will probably cost you no more than £60. **Espresso machines** are the big expensive looking thing ms you’ll typically see baristas using in coffee shops. They force hot water through very finely-ground coffee at high pressure creating very rich coffee. There’s a fair bit of knowledge required to work them. Require regular maintenance. Lots of paraphernalia too. Can be BIFL. There are machines available for more than £20k so top-of-the-range is not really relevant here but superb machines for home use are about £600. You’ll also need a superb coffee grinder though. Ideally, you would know what type of coffee you currently make and what type of coffee you like to drink for a start. TL;NIR (too long, no intention to read): buy a [Moccamaster](https://www.eater.com/shopping/898703/technivorm-moccamaster-coffee-machine-kbgv-review)

Need a quality coffee maker
Honestly just get a decent drip machine like a Technivorm or Bonavita and call it a day. French press is just coffee grounds steeping in hot water then you push down a filter - it's more hands on but tastes different (heavier). Espresso is way stronger and concentrated, totally different beast For black coffee the temperature thing matters less than good beans and a consistent machine. Those Technivorms last forever and brew at the right temp automatically so you don't have to think about it

SAFE alternative to Bunn MyCafe Coffee Maker?
Professional coffee person and amateur opinion -haver here: you want a Technivorm Moccamaster. There are cheaper options that are also good, but this is BIFL, and the Moccamaster is built to last, easily repairable, and makes superior coffee to most brewers. There are ~ 20 brewers certified by the Specialty Coffee Association as meeting their strict standards and about 1/3 of those are Technivorm models.

Thank you BIFL Community, Looking Forward to Great Tasting Coffee for a Looooong Time!
I’ve had mine for more than a year! For set and forget coffee it makes even crappy beans great. My grinder is awful though. I didn’t want to spend a fortune on a grinder and now I get to buy twice :’) (the OXO Conical Burr grinder sucks for anyone looking. It constantly clogs and I have to disassemble or shake it out or vacuum it to resolve.)

Thank you BIFL Community, Looking Forward to Great Tasting Coffee for a Looooong Time!
Mine is hitting 10 years old and going well. Takes a little longer (like maybe a minute?) to brew a pot. I have the thermal carafe, and it keeps coffee legitimately hot for a couple hours, and then warm the rest of the day. It's been a workhorse. Making a full carafe just about every day. I clean it at 100 or so brews, and we have pretty good water so I haven't had to descale it that often. I just buy a 100 pack of filters and when that runs out, I know it's time to clean. Life time warranty, and Technivorm will rebuild it for free if it starts chugging. I might try that service soon. Been thinking of getting the glass carafe for ease of cleaning.

Looking for a coffee machine that lasts forever
If you make single cups of coffee, try a Clever coffee brewer. Just insert a filter, add coffee and water right off boil, stir, steep 2-3 mins, and then place on a cup to release the coffee. Rinse out and repeat. So easy. A coffee scale helps to get ratios right and an electric kettle is recommended. But overall very simple setup that lasts forever. Similar to a V60 pourover, but even easier. If you're looking for making larger pots of coffee, go with other recommendations here, like the Moccamaster.

If you’re looking for something that truly lasts, go for Technivorm Moccamaster or Breville Precision Brewer. Both have metal internals, easy to fix if something breaks, and parts are available for years. I’ve had the Moccamaster for 5+ years — no issues, just regular descaling.

Looking for a coffee machine that lasts forever
We're also extremely satisfied with our Moccamaster. I strongly recommend getting an RO system and only filling it from that. It greatly decreases the need to descale and clean the machine. We have [this one from APEC Water Systems](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00I0ZGOZM) hooked up to our fridge, which is one of those Samsung ones with the water pitcher in the door. For some reason it was really hard to find this info: the right stuff for cleaning it is the Urnex [descaler](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004L8V966) and [espresso machine cleaning powder](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001418KNS?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_1) (the latter of which is, as I understand it, basically dishwasher detergent).

Inuse a df 64 as my grinder for coffee. I also have a capresso bur grinder that is semi retired/backup. Its lasted about 10 years, and still kicking. I used it every day. Pour over chemex. Coffee maker Recs Moccamaster or Bunn for smaller pots?
Moccamaster makes a single serve coffee maker that brews a cup in about 4 minutes. It’s called the Cup One and we replaced our Keurig with it. It’s been great and the coffee is so much better than the keurig. If you get the larger moccamasters it’s pretty simple to make a half pot.

Moccamaster Coffee Brewer
We have both as well. The Bonavita is at our farmhouse which we visit a couple of weekends out of the month. Agreed the Technivorm is the best but the Bonavita is a close second. The mocha master is extremely consistent. 197° 100% of the time and that makes the difference. Brew time on 1 L is about 10 seconds faster than the Bonavita. Both are excellent coffee makers though.

We have both and the Bonavita is a very close second to the mocha master. Really about the only variation is the Technivorm disperses hot water at 197°F 100% of the time which is ideal for perfect coffee. The Bonavita has a slut variation from time to time maybe 195° to 200° which is no big deal. Just saying. I prefer the mocha master, but the Bonavita is about half the price.

Best device to make a pot of coffee?
Start with the Technivorm Moccamaster, like recommended here. For what you get, they aren't expensive. Only thing we hated was the fragility of the pouring spout on the pot, a small bump in your drying rack is enough to crack it. After then 3rd time, we just lived with the broken spout. The way we used to brew it was: 1. Put the paper filter in and rinse it 2. Have the funnel blocked, let the water fully run into it, then stir the slurry completely 3. Once fully stirred, then open it to decant into the jug Not sure if this is optimal or horrendous, but was what we did. Also, goes without saying, but get the best beans you can, and beans that suit the way you drink coffee (i.e. with or without milk). Finally, have a dedicated grinder, set to what you believe tastes best for you.

If you want a well built machine that is truly BIFL, then the Technivorm Mochamaster. The thing is like the Oreck XL vacuum in that it hasn’t changed much in 40+ years, but that it’s also simplistic. what is the best coffee maker you've ever used?
I've had the Technivorm for about 15 years I think and you can't beat the customer service and warranty service long after purchase. That said, made with some pretty crappy plastic parts except for the carafe and it makes good coffee but we've taken to using Hario V60 for pour over instead. The coffee is just as good if not better because we stir the slurry this way. I guess it depends on whether your priority is making a pot of coffee or a cup of coffee one at a time. The new glass line thermal carafe is a real upgrade one of several they did for free in addition to paid service for repair.

Drip Coffee Maker - Time for a new one
Another vote for Technician. Our Moccamaster has been absolutely bulletproof.

Drip Coffee Maker - Time for a new one
Yep. My mom and dad have had the same one since 2010. Got mine in 2017 when I moved out. Also have a one cupper at work. 9 years of daily use (2-4 cups a day 5 days a week) and still working like it was new. I know it ignores a lot of OP's requirements. But if you want a BIFL coffee maker, you get a Technivorm. It's that simple.

Can y’all help me pick a coffee maker?
Neither. Being smart-frugal should point you in the direction of anything but a pod-coffee machine. Cost per cup is obscenely higher than a regular drip machine using loose coffee (either ground or whole bean that you grind yourself). You are in the "Buy it for life" group, which looks at spending more upfront (or buying used) to get a quality made item. This many times saves in the long run with longevity of the product. The usually answer for drip coffee maker is picking up a Technivorm Moccamaster, which will last decades with minor maintenance and has parts availability. But if you are looking at staying on the cheap end of things, why don't you consider picking up a french press?

Coffee machine for life? (or at least a few years)
I got a Technivorm Moccamaster used on Craigslist in 2017. Still makes incredible coffee. The gal I got it from took good care of it, told me to descale it after each box of filters, and it’s still going strong. They have replaceable parts if anything goes wrong and it’s a very simple machine, I consider it BIFL.

What home coffee essentials have held up and lasted you over time?
I use that grinder as well, and the Technivorm Moccamaster is the real deal. Built like a tank and performs properly every time.

Ha, me too. I got the stainless steel and have since realized I would prefer one of the colors and have also realized I may not get to replace this machine. I wish I got commission. Numerous guests have had coffee at my house and gone out and bought their own MoccaMaster. I got mine after having coffee from one at a friend's house.

I use a baratza encore grinder, amazon scale, and a technivorm drip machine. Also used to just use a hot water kettle and a clever coffee dripper.

What home coffee essentials have held up and lasted you over time?
This was my "buy it for the rest of my life" purchase 2 years ago, after chasing the perfect cup through the latest design drip machines and vintage percolators and siphons. It sits next to my Kitchenaid burr grinder, also a BIFL that replaced a few trendy machines. The Technivorm video of their factory convinced me.

Not what you’re looking for, but when it comes to drip coffee makers the Techni Vorm Moccamaster is a buy it for life item. Extremely well built, and they sell service parts for repair instead of replacement should anything go wrong in the future. It sits on my counter next to my Dualit toaster which I bought for the same reason - build quality and serviceability
