A few brands I'll probably stick with for life
Tumi for backpacks. Bought mine 5 yrs ago it feels brand new even after daily use bringing to work every day and on every travel trip I've done Messermeister for knives Eddie Bauer for parkas. Going 10 yrs strong. Dooney and burke for purses/bags. Shockingly well constructed, my cross body small bag looks new and I've had it 6 years and throw it on my car floor Tempurpedic mattresses (obviiuouslyyyyy don't keep the same mattress for life lol but ours is 12 yrs old and feels new. Only buying a new one next year to size up from a queen to a king) Chaigoo twist red lace interchangeable knitting needles set My husbands American fender bass guitar Bio-ionic ceramic hair straightener

Little luxuries or upgrades that you made this year that makes your everyday better?
was forced to move last year. Threw away the whole bed frame and mattress. Brought myself a mid-price tempur pedic mattress and adjustable frame. I love it. I just wished I could have splurge for 1 model higher but I can live with it

The Best Mattress to Buy at the Moment?
Firm Tempur-Pedic (adjustable base) with a 3 inch (cooling) topper - best bed I’ve ever had by far. I’ve had a bad back for years and this thing keeps me sleeping like a baby with no pain when I wake up. I didn’t understand people “loving” their beds until I got this one. Bought it 3 years ago and it’s like new. Zero sagging and super sturdy. Since I use a topper and mattress protector, I imagine I’ll get more than the typical 10 years out of it.

The Best Mattress to Buy at the Moment?
I had 2 temperpedics, both amazing, medium firmness. But if i could do all over, id probably get a sleepnumber. I like the idea of changing firmness whenever i want, so kinda wish i got that. The split one though.

The Best Mattress to Buy at the Moment?
Latex is essentially king, in terms of support and longevity. Memory foam (the proper density and quality) is probably next in line. Mattress underground breaks this all down for you. You can get a latex hybrid which can be a good middle ground.

What are some good memory foam mattresses that you've found it worth buying?
Been using a Tempur-Pedic for like 3 years now and it's held up really well, though definitely pricey. Worth checking out some of the bed-in-a-box brands too - Purple and Casper get mentioned a lot around here for good reason

Suggestions for hypoallergenic mattresses?
Tempur-Pedic is solid but latex hits different for allergies though. I switched from memory foam to natural latex last year and the difference in air quality around my bed was night and day. No more waking up stuffy. The bouncy feel takes getting used to but my back pain basically disappeared

What is the equivalent of "Apple removed 3.5mm jack" of your favorite products ?
I went into tempurpedic to see what the modern equivalent of my wonderful tempurpedic symphony 2012 mattress was, and the people in the store hadn't worked with the company long enough to know the answer. This is an expected downside of a product outlasting everything else about the company.

Mattresses that actually hold up for years, what’s your pick?
Working in the mattress industry, Tempur-pedic is great. 9 times out of 10 when I have a customer tell me they’ve been sleeping on the same mattress for 20+ years it’s a tempur. Aireloom is also great for a more traditional style mattress. Hand made.

Anyone have any success with recent models of Tempurpedic mattresses?
Even more so because you’re a lightweight sleeper, because I don’t believe you’ll weigh enough to get the full comfort of the foam. I know what you mean, I was torn between the LuxeAdapt Hybrid, Soft and LuxeBreeze Soft. They all felt more comfortable than my Casper Wave Hybrid Snow so any of them would have been an upgrade. Eventually I just picked the Breeze because it was softer than the hybrid and cooler, but not too soft as the other LuxeAdapt Soft… even though I REALLY liked that one too. Lol

That’s brutal for the price! Definitely push for a warranty claim. For replacements, look into Saatva or Tempur-Pedic, they hold up better long term.

A good mattress, do they exist anymore?
I have a Tempur-Pedic. I use a mattress cover I bought on Amazon. I use a heating pad every day - no issues. The heating pad has an automatic shut off, so it’s not on all night. No heat marks or stains. My bed is around five years old. I have two covers so I can switch them out when I do laundry. I have cats - they’re not allowed to touch my bed without a cover on it. I would die if one of them harfed on it when I was doing laundry.

Out tempurpedic is 5 years old and it's as comfortable as when we got it. Was honestly a little stiff hard when we first got it but it has softened up a bit. It's a luxebreeze soft in king size.

Stearns & Foster is owned by Somnigroup International (formerly Tempur Sealy) — the same global mattress group behind Tempur-Pedic, Sealy Posturepedic, Bassett, and Mattress Firm. Doesn’t mean they are all the same but I went with tempurpedic bc I need pressure relief and that’s what they specialize in. So I think determine what you need- then pick the company

Looking for Mattress Recommendations – What do you think of these two?
I don't know if any mattress is BIFL. They get worn in/out. That said, I got about 12 years from our first foam, no brand latex. Then, another 12 from an earlier version Cloud. Just go a new version Cloud. They're the most similar to the old no brand, since my preference is no memory foam sink.

Name your top 5 BIFL items
My top five: 1. Tempurpedic mattress - going strong for 11 years and still feels like new 2. Blendtec blender - had it for 10 years and over 4k blends (it keeps track on the blender, which I love) and still going strong. I know the Vitamix is outstanding and told myself I’d buy one when the Blendtec dies, but here we are. Especially if you just need a blender and not necessarily all the additional functions Vitamix offers, Blendtec is durable and exceptional. 3. The OG Lululemon Wunderunder leggings - bought mine 15 years ago and they still look like new after years of hot yoga and group fitness classes. 4. Ethan Allen dining table - over 35+ years old. My parents gave their table and chairs to us. Wound up upgrading to new chairs from Ruggable a few years ago, but the table continues to be in exceptional condition. 5. Sorel boots - I live in Wisconsin, so my winter boots get heavy use and I’m impressed that my Joan of Artic pair are still warm and have excellent traction for the past 8 years.

The Best Mattress for Side Sleepers Right now?
I have had a Tempur-Pedic for about 12 years with no deformation and I sleep on my side most of the time. I’ve also had mail order mattresses in a different location apart from my home (camper, summer home) and they developed a bad sag in the middle after a fairly short time.

The Best Mattress for Back Pain Currently?
Latex mattress with an adjustable base. Being able to elevate your feet and the inclination of your back is what will relieve lower back pressure and pain. We had a tempurpedic for 10 years and just switched to a latex. Loved the tempurpedic but love the latex even more. My husband has had lower back issues for a decade and this is the only thing that allows him to sleep through the night.

The Best Mattress for Back Pain Currently?
I have a bad back too. After herniated 3 disks I couldn't lay in my old matress because it was too painful. We ended up getting a temper pedic medium firmness hybrid matress and it awesome. I found it by going to the store and laying in numerous beds and seeing which took the pressure off my back. I highly recommend going to the store. Even if you lay in each for 30 minutes its worth the time end effort. Mattresses are very much a person thing and your best one may not be mine.

Whats the perfect pillow for good neck posture when sleeping on my back and side?
For neck support and staying cool, go for a medium-firm pillow. Some good options: * **Coop Home Goods Adjustable Pillow** (customizable and cooling) * **Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud Pillow** (great support and stays cool) * **Brooklinen Down Alternative Pillow** (soft, breathable, and cool) Hopefully, one of these helps with both comfort and temperature!

Looking for a new mattress.
This is one of those things that is going to be different for everyone. People like what they like and don't what they don't. One person's amazing mattress is another person's nightmare mattress. I love my tempurpedic. I have sold mattresses for a long time and while you should not cheap out on your mattress the price is many times overblown.

My TempurPedic pillow is probably upwards of 20 years old now. But I guess memory foam doesn't get as gross as regular pillows do over time?

Anyone have any success with recent models of Tempurpedic mattresses?
I had a Pro Plus Firm mattress, but it was a horrible experience. I did my best to adapt, but after 60 nights, I decided to exchange it for a soft one—and it feels like heaven. It's a 25 cm mattress, so it provides great support for my posture. I believe that terms like Soft, Medium-Firm, and Firm describe the feel rather than the actual support level. Maybe that's not entirely true, but that's how it feels to me, and I'm happy I made the switch from firm to soft.

The pillow cube ain’t it
I strongly disagree. I’ve been through a countless number of pillows for years. Before this pillow, I’ve been using the tempur pedic cloud pillow for years which has been good. I’ve been having some of the best sleep of my life on the side cube deluxe pillow. I’m exclusively a side sleeper. I agree that the pillow isn’t good or designed to be used by back sleepers. It’s too think for that. But as a side sleeper, it gives me great support and I have been waking up with no neck or back pain. Also if you get their ice cube pillow (which is what you describe) it says it’s final sale, no returns. I got the side cube deluxe which can be returned. They charge $4 for “redo” service which will handle the return. I haven’t tried to return it so I don’t know what that process looks like.

What’s one item you bought that has lasted for YEARS and was worth every penny?
Timbuk2 laptop backpack. Bought it years ago back when they were still a smaller company and still making everything by hand in SanFran. Unfortunately they sold out and moved most of their manufacturing overseas since then. But I've got my OG bag, and when I tell you it has been through some SHIT but still looks like it did the day I bought it...! I took a solo trip to Europe in 2016 and that was the bag that I carried around with me everywhere - on the metro, the tube, the trains, all the sightseeing, every flight, etc. It has also been my only bag on shorter domestic trips when I am trying to travel as cheaply as possible (read: Spirit). I'm able to cram quite a bit in there and avoid a carryon entirely for a 4-5 day trip. Also going to be the 57464646 person to say Le Creuset. I have a bunch of it and it is truly amazing. Lastly, Tempurpedic. I adore my bed. Most mattresses only last 6-8 years but with a waterproof mattress cover a Tempur can last like 15. I have a bunch of chronic illnesses/pain and this thing has kept me from becoming completely useless. I've had it for about 15 years now and it's just now finally starting to need to be replaced.

[BIFL Request] Pillow that stays cold/Resists Sweat
I hear you with the hate for hot pillows. They were my bane for quite a few years. So yeah, the ONLY pillow that has worked for me to stay cool has been the very expensive Tempur-Pedic pillow. It has a decent return policy, I believe, so it's worth a time. And the cost can be amortized over the many years that it lasts.

[BIFL Request] Pillow that stays cold/Resists Sweat
If the sweating is related to the medication and not to excessive heat, then I'm not sure that any pillow short of an actively cooled one could work. If the sweating is heat related, though, then you aren't going to get much better than a memory foam / gel pillow. They do work the best for staying cool. I live in AZ and we keep our house notably warmer than most people are comfortable with. I had serious problems with pillows that never stayed cool for years and years. And then I got a Tempur-Pedic pillow six years ago and I haven't needed to buy a new one since. It stays cool without flipping or repositioning even during hot AZ nights and it's remained supremely comfortable after all these years. Very expensive, though -- this is the one I think I have : http://www.tempurpedic.com/All-Position-Pillows/Tempur-Pedic-TEMPUR-Cloud-Breeze-Dual-Cooling.asp It comes with a pillow cover that can be removed and washed.
