stretchy, skintight, preferably natural fiber, long-sleeved women's "base layer"?
I like the Terramar ones and the Lands End (tops only, the pants are bad) I also use Numi undershirts, though I haven't tried the long sleeve. And for sweat concerns there are also dress shields! also Uniqlo.

Help me find the perfect women's warm long johns
Try Terramar Silk Thermals. It's smooth, no itch, comfy high rise. Also REI Sahara Silk bottoms are soft and low‑profile.

How do synthetic base layers compare to merino wool base layers?
Check sierra. I got Smartwool and terramar merino sets there for under $50 each and recently saw similar prices. The terramar has pilled a bit after heavy consistent use for 2 winters, the Smartwool has not. That said, I do also really like my synthetic sets from 32 degrees cool. They cost me under $20/set and look brand new after 3 years. As has been mentioned they do get a lot stinkier than the merino.

Best longjohns/baselayers?
I spend a lot of time outdoors in the winter (EMS and also a ski instructor) and have been through all of the usual brands. I have a set of Terramar base layers that I really like, except they’re thin and not for extreme cold. The top is a 1/2 zip and fits snug, but not compressive. It also has thumb loops, which seem to be a rare commodity on mens base layers. Does anyone know of any other brands out there that come in different weights, are not super compressive, and also have thumb loops?
