What brands/products do you AVOID because of their poor longevity?
Nike sandals back around 2000 were \*awesome\*. At some point around 2008 they change and instead of using full leather on the sandal like they had, they switched to a thin strip of leather on the back heel and mostly some kind of black stretchy material everywhere else. The result was the black material with use stretched and tore. I have no idea what Nike outdoor sandals are like today, I've been with Tevas since 2009.

If you started your wardrobe over from scratch, what would you buy? (US)
I recently moved overseas to a much, much colder continent so I did have to a) declutter and sort through everything I own, b) pack the clothes I needed for the year in a single suitcase and then c) collect a lot of new stuff to suit the new climate. I also might have a few contrasting choices as I'm a young-ish woman who likes dressing up and wearing interesting pieces (e.g. there's not a single grey thing in my wardrobe). I brought with me: **Tops:** 10-ish t-shirts, most from second-hand stores or small businesses; 3 cotton longsleeves (to be transparent, they're all Taylor Swift merch); 1 merino wool and 1 merino/silk blend long sleeve; 1 thermal shirt; 1 corduroy button up/light layer; 1 men's linen button up; 3 sports jerseys for working out **Dresses:** 4 thrifted cotton dresses - 1 mini, 2 midi, 1 maxi **Outerwear:** my Kathmandu raincoat and another rain-resistant jacket; 2 sweaters; 1 puffer jacket **Bottoms:** 3 thin cotton or linen pants (all fun patterns); 1 pair of hiking pants; 2 pairs of bike shorts; 2 mini skirts; 1 thermal pants; Lululemon leggings **Shoes:** black RM Williams boots; brown blundstones; white converse; teva sandals. The converse are falling apart (4-ish years old?) so will need to be replaced by another everyday walking sneaker and I'm keeping an eye out for brown leather boots to better match some outfits. Plus socks & underwear, swimmers, hats, beanie, bags etc. I've purchased another merino wool long sleeve, some soft cotton lounge/pyjama pants, some wool/polyester trousers, some thermal leggings and some jersey trousers from Uniqlo, a coat from a vintage store, and a Patagonia fleece from a second hand store. I also bought some 100% wool trousers from a second hand shop but they accidentally ended up in the wash and shrunk (still feeling their loss). This is tiding me over well for now, but I'm still building up my collection of athletic/hiking/outdoorsy gear and hoping to do that as sustainably as possible - sourcing secondhand, buying from reputable (and inevitably expensive) brands, choosing natural fibres etc. Also on my list: another sundress (but holding out for the perfect one), a pair of leggings more suited to running (as opposed to yoga) and a long gingham skirt. Long (sorry!) but I've been thinking about my wardrobe a lot this year so had lots of thoughts to put down!

What alternatives to shoes do you use when stepping outside?
Teva Flops or Aldi Crocs. I also have some LL Bean moose hide slippers but those are almost exclusively for indoor use. I've only ever stepped outside with them accidentally.

I’ve been using Teva ReEmber shoes as my house slippers, they’ve been lasting way longer than actual slippers I’ve tried. I replaced the insole with a more supportive one. They do come in a bootie. The soles are sturdy and the top/inside is soft.

Should Birkenstock soles look this bad after 1 year of occasional use?
All local shops that resole Birks in my city all charge $95-110 to do so. I may as well spend the extra $10-25 for a brand new pair. I’ve tried, trust me. I wear Birks daily, work, pool, vacations, etc., they’re my go to shoe for every occasion. If I’m forced to wear something different, I’m a bit butthurt unless it’s hiking, in which I always wear Tevas. One of my favorite pair of Birks had to be replaced a few months ago. Over two years of daily use, soles needed replacing. I called every shoe repair shop/outlet I could find within 20 miles. They either didn’t repair Birks or charged $100+ to repair, with the cheapest being $95. I assumed it would’ve been cheaper to repair, but guess I was wrong.

What wide shoe brands do you recommend?
Soft Spots as sold as Zappos or Comfortiva! They come in W and WW. I have a pair in W and I’m a TRUE REAL 1000% WIDE where normal shoes don’t fit but idk if I’m a WW. Also, I have a pair of Mary Jane’s in wide by Danskos that fit. Other Danskos don’t fit in wide but those Mary Janes do! I have a pair of wide Teva Hurricanes in the croc material that I use all summer, and Hokas in wide for walking. I feel the pain of trying to find QUALITY wide cute shoes!

Teva makes a version of the hurricane that has a super thick sole, called ampsole. If you don't mind the extra height or platform look, these could be your answer. The fit (for me) is exactly like the standard hurricane, and the soles last twice as long.

Yeah, I've got a pair of Tevas I've had for about a decade that are getting a bit scruffy looking, and another pair I've had for five years or so that still look new. Granted, I only wear them in the summer, but there's no problems with the soles at all. Got the second pair used. I wonder if they were made better a few years ago.

My Tevas broke after light use, of course AFTER the 1 year warranty expired
They do now have a lighter and softer version. Don't know how well they hold up but I've not had issues yet.

Totally depends on what you are looking for. I live in tevas and birks but a lot of people think they don’t have enough support for long term wear. My mom really likes chacos which have a more supportive sole and very adjustable straps. My dad likes keen and Merrill sandals which fit more like shoes, have a shoe sole, and come in versions with a closed toe which can be good for various situations but still have the ventilation of sandals.

I wear Teva Olawahus as my indoor shoes and they're noticeably more comfortable on my bad back than almost any others, (except those Hoka recovery slides, those are magical for back pain). I find the crisscrossed straps to be more supportive than slides. The Olawahus aren't BIFL, but I've repurchased them maybe 4-5 times since I started wearing them 15-20 years, and they get worn all summer long. Pretty sturdy, except for the one pair that got chewed up by a puppy.

Cute Sandals w Ankle Support
I bought some Birkenstock Pappillio wedges for "nice" shoes and got another pair of Yara for every day. I'm still looking at the Tevas though, but will probably get another pair of Planka. I'll be two years post corkscrew fracture of the tibia with ankle repair. I have a plate and seven screws and pins, and I do pretty well in the wedges for church and out to eat after. I haven't done a full day yet.

Do you truly mean slippers (to keep your feet warm) or just something to wear inside? I live in NC so I wear sandals 8 months out of the year and slippers the other 4. I wear Teva sandals. I get an average of 5 years out of them. Super comfortable and you can wash them in the sink. Fair warning, they stink big time if you have sweaty feet.

I love activewear/outdoor boot brands. Keene boots are the most comfortable and I wear them casually but not necessarily everyone's style. Teva makes super comfy boots that in my opinion are much more stylish and can be dressed up or down so I can wear them with dresses or jeans. Both brands have removable insoles and the ones I buy are waterproof. Not quite buy it for life but they hold up exceptionally well if taken care of. I've got pairs that are 5 years old and clean up like they are new.

Seconding Tevas!! I’ve had mine (they’ve got thinner straps than these though), the Olowahu since 2021, maybe 2025, and used them almost every day since. I actually wore them instead of Chacos in Japan because the latter were hurting my feet; this led to me accidentally completing a moderate hike in them lol. Anyway, they’re super light which seems to be important to OP, 11/10 would recommend! I also ending up swapping my Chacos for a different Teva style

Best simple, not overly-engineered shoe for walking 12k steps/day?
Oboz are supposedly some of the longer lasting hiking boots nowadays. I got 2 years out of my last pair of sawtooths, and for me that's pretty good for hiking boots - I hike a lot and am rough on my shoes in general That being said, I'd recommend either switching shoes between activities if that 12k isn't all in one walk (ie, 2k around town commuting and then a 3 mile walk for pleasure later, wear blundstones to and from work then switch to hiking boots or trail runners) - or if it's regular daily hiking, buy 2 pairs and rotate day to day, shoes last longer if they can fully dry, or so I'm told / so it seems in my experience In the summer, I mostly wear tevas for real hiking and choring, and birkenstocks for casual walking around town / flat walks like rail trails, and gentle tasks harvesting on the farm

I had a pair of Chocos for about 7 years before they blew out. But it was trying to pull pull them out of mud in knee deep water a few times with a canoe on my shoulders on a portaging trip so I think they get some grace lol. They still lasted like 2 more years with a 1 inch rip. Tevas and chaco’s are nice

I know, the two pair I had lasted 12 years. I should have kept them and had them resolved. Fuck I loved them. My Tevas lasted for twelve years too until they met the 16 mile Trail called The Narrows in Zion Park. That was one fuckin hard in/out of water trail.
