  Boots for winter and wet weather?

They are super warm, but a bit heavy and restrictive.   so I tore a hole in that exact columbia in a week I have a north face mcmurdo. it’s just a hair over that price, but 6 years and still water proof. nothing crazy, but the zippers are two sizes?(I don’t know the terms, i’m not a clothing guy, but the zipper is much thicker and aligns better) same situation-I have a long walk into work and if it’s below 32 or at all windy- I wear it

  Has anyone attempted a warranty claim for The North Face?

  I have the same issue with my Denali. I just mailed it in and it got there in December. I haven’t heard anything back one way or the other yet but I just followed up via email for status. I assume with holidays things are a little slower. I hope it’s just a simple zipper swap as the jacket is fine outside of that and is maybe from 2018?

  What Snow Boots to Buy?

  They got a lot of use over the last 15 years, but only got to wear them once this year. They were the most comfortable boots I've ever owned, I feel terrible about pitching them. They lasted through raising 3 kids, sledding, shoveling and so many winter dog walks.

  Best winter parka money can buy?

  What’s your leg/head situation? I find if I don’t have a warm hat and long johns then it doesn’t matter how warm my coat is, I get cold.  I’ve got TNF McMurdo parka and it is the warmest coat I’ve ever owned. Only thing it is missing is a waist cinch but I’m planning on DIYing it or having a tailor add one.

  No idea what North Face’s quality is like these days, however I have one of their Gotham jackets that’s about 8 years old and I hardly ever need more than a t-shirt underneath even in -15C. Had an Arc’teryx parka for 4 years and eventually sold it. It was fashionable but not built for extended periods in the cold. I don’t like wearing too many layers and in -10 to -15 I’d still need a light sweater underneath to feel truly warm.

  How do you wear your coats and what is the intent of this for? There are parkas designed for the 20-40 F range, the 0-20 range the -20-0 range and the -20 and below. There are parkas designed for athletics and movement, for general wear, for heavy work, and others. Outer shells can be thin nylon to heavy duty canvas. So in that same price range the best all around parka will be your north face McMurdo. But for just about any other jacket there are better options.

  Need a Winter Coat That's Good in Snow/Rain/Sleet in sub zero temperatures

  You just need a good waterproof shell that cuts wind for rain/sleet. I just use a northface triclimate jacket in cold/sleet conditions. But many brands make something similar. I bought mine at marshalls 7-8 years ago.

  I went on this quest several years ago and decided to just get a decent backpack for a do-it-all solution. I have used a North Face Borealis for five years with daily use going to the office (laptop, accessories, lunch, water, coffee) and frequent weekend use on day hikes (water, snack, sweat) and camping and it shows essentially zero wear.   Is there a name for brands that only focus on highest quality?

  Luxury means exclusive most of times. I see luxury itens to be more conceptual rather than functional. It's ostentation, not purpose. Most common life time brands - le creuset - timberland - the north face ( Not all countries have the same quality products) Look for military gadgets, camping gear for extreme weather. Even clothes. Furniture - my advice is to check thrift stores and find the ones with great wood that survived decades; handles, knobs and hinges are probably falling apart, varnish probably blistering. Look for potential, not aesthetic. You can fiz furniture aesthetic, not structure.

  What are the warmest winter boots you've ever owned? Looking for recommendations

  Weirdly hard to buy. Even at the flagship REI, nearly all of their "wonder" boots had no insulation over the foot. I settled in North Face Chillkat V. They have 400 gram "Heatseeker" insulation, which I'm hoping is similar to Thinsulate, over the foot. Under the foot there's the regular EVA foam, insoles, etc. I'd tried the 200 gram Keen Targhee boots (not Targhee II or III; I believe they're discontinued) but they had no insulation I could detect over the foot. The Kamik Nationplus had no insulation UNDER the foot (nor any cushioning, shank, midsole or any other structure).

  Didn’t realize how attached I was to my old backpack until it finally started falling apart

  I feel this. I have a northface borealis backpack. When I went to the store to pick up a new one, the quality just isn't the same. It feels cheaply made and that it wouldn't hold up. Mine is still going strong. I did recently buy the osprey daylite backpack and really like it.

  What is the warmest down coat for under $500?

  As a jacket hound, owner of way too many jackets, there are 2 ways to go about this. A very heavy duty super warm jacket like you are referring to (like the north face McMurdo parka, Duluth trading Ruffer Puffer, and of course others in higher price ranges). These are very good options for very cold days - if you live in the north, they are smart to own (even to keep in your car for those bad situations of getting stranded). The warmest single layer jackets are heavy compared to high performance gear which is geared towards higher activity and need for flexibility (skiing, snowboarding, climbing, cross country skiing). Whereas the super heavy/warm single jackets are great for a football game in December in Greenbay or Chicago, standing on the ice ice fishing for hours, being at an outdoor Christmas market for hours in the cold and windy, of if you walk a mile or more to work in a cold windy city like Chicago on a frigid day).   The weakness of the single layer extra warm jacket is that on many days it is too warm for the jacket. Like running errands when you are in a heated car or indoors for much of the time. That said, I have 4 ultra warm jackets - 2 Canada Goose Parkas, 1 - 800 fill Mountain Hardwear jacket 20 years old and should be replaced), 1 - Arc'teryx Rush down jacket (wearing today in the teens). I spend a LOT of time outdoors, even when it's very cold (-20 to 10 degrees out). In these Temps, these parkas cannot be replaced by layering for a combined total cost of $1,000.  That said, for more active cold weather activities, the layering approach is the way to go. Then I like the following - mountain hardware Monkey Man fleece (get the square inner pattern fleece vs. a solid/smoother inner layer fleece), Patagonia for a mid weight down layer OR Arc'teryx for a synthetic down layer, and then a hard shell layer that has some sort of soft inner layer for added warmth vs. just a straight hard shell (that is really just a more rugged rain jacket). Then you also can look at soft shells vs. the hard shell as the outer layer on nice non precipitation days (even though manybsoftshells have a DWR sprayed on finish, they are not generally waterproof.

  Both are solid choices but honestly I'd lean towards the North Face for your needs - that 800 fill is gonna make a noticeable difference when you're standing around in the cold with kids, and 2017 isn't that old for a quality parka The price difference is steep though, so if budget's tight the Patagonia will definitely do the job

  If repairing is not an option I absolutely adore my North Face backpack. I have the surge which was the largest women’s backpack at the time. The bags they sell have a structured spine to make it easier for your back to carry heavy items so if anything I recommend a brand that offers that feature as well. I have had my backpack for 8 years and still looks brand new. I am a teacher who can be rough in things and I use it every day in the school year (usually is 15-20lbs), along with every flight. It’s the easiest to carry for long periods in comparison to my other backpacks. Plus as a carry on it fits under my seat just fine. But also, wear both straps! I have a bad back from dance and it makes me irk when students wear them hella low.

  I love my North Face RECON backpack for work. Great protection for laptops and plenty of storage for books and other electronics. For travel I have the Osprey Daylite 26+6. It opens up like a suitcase. My wife and I recently did a full 10-day trip with just Daylite bags as a carry-on.

  Canada Goose worth owning? If you live in cold climates?

  In the same climate. Never had a CG jacket but did invest in a high end North Face parka 10 ish years ago. Held up perfectly from everyday wear and dog walks during the winter. The only reason I no longer use it is that I no longer fit the size I bought. Replaced it with a Patagonia parka for this winter (it was on sale) and I’ve also heard good things about the brand. All in all it depends on what activities you are doing outside and for how long. Regardless of what jacket you get, layering when it hits -30C is always gonna make you feel cozier. When it’s -40C and below everything sucks, stay inside.

  I'd say they need either a bigger better bag or something from SwissGear, LL Bean school bag, NorthFace Jester, etc. Keep in mind not every pack is made 'one size fits all'. And just because it has the volume to carry heavy weight doesn't mean it should. I've got a 7yr old Swissgear bag for work that is like new (just for commuting), and Solgaard Venture that's been to 3 continents. Those plus a variety of stuffable daypacks and hunting bags... get the correct tool for the job. + that torn strap is repairable.

  Check out down jackets on 1688, Taobao, aliexpress, and so on. The ones that look like north face and Canada goose jackets (similar design but no logos/badges). These are high quality, thick fabric, down filled, and available for like $200. Will keep you plenty warm. Personally, I prefer a separate down puffer and shell. Easier to clean separately and I can replace one or the other if there are issues.

  If you’re using it for school, Swissgear makes affordable, versatile backpacks with a lot of pockets for one thing or the next. I had one that lasted me 10 years before starting to rip. Ogio makes really good backpacks for office and school too. Mines lasted 5 years so far with a good amount of abuse and weight. But I find their stuff to be more expensive. There are plenty of other options that make more specialized backpacks. Outdoor/travel brands: osprey, north face, Cotopaxi. Travel specific: aer, tortuga, matador, evergoods,: the list goes on. I find these aesthetic but I think I would have preferred the extra pockets and all where I find these other brands make really nice bags for large compartments with some organization pockets that might be good for minimal use of office supplies and more packing space. Some of the smaller commuter backpacks might be good to use for school. But I still love my Ogio renegade for standard use with way too many pockets. I have a glasses case on top for my safety glasses. Two zip pockets on each side for everyday carry stuff. Water bottle pockets. One of the water bottle pockets holds zip ties and twisty ties. Laptop and folders of course. Main pocket holds all my bulky stuff. Two secondary pockets: one holds all my Office supplies. The other holds flatter objects that I need separated from everything else for one reason or the next. Unfortunately this is padded which you don’t like.

  Jansport. They have a lifetime warranty. I am 42 and 4 years ago I pulled my high school pack out for classes I was taking and it ripped. Mailed it to them, replaced without issue. Also, The North Face has lifetime warranties as well. My hiking bag is a North Face Jester and I love it, 10 years with it and still going strong!

  Looking for a good quality winter coat

  Northern Maine resident here. I have a Carhartt Super Dux hoodie that seems to be my staple. I've only been here 4 years, and have a few winter coats in my closet. Carhartt, Columbia, and North Face. I also have a few vests to go underneath. I really like the Columbia one, as it has a reflective pattern on the interior that reflects heat back into me warm space. The North Face is the most waterproof of the four. The Carhartt jacket is untested as I got it at a yard sale over the past summer (brand new and I only paid $5, retail it was over $200). However, my North Face vest and this Carhartt hoodie have gotten me through the past two winters. I deliver pizza so I needed something easy on and off, while still being in the elements for like 20 deliveries a day. My actual winter coats all look brand new because they live in the closet. I may donate one or two to a cold looking person while on my routes this winter. I recommend an insulated vest as well as a good jacket. From inside out, you want: - moisture wicking layer to pull sweat away from your body - insulation layer to trap your body heat - outer layer that is wind proof and water proof To truly stay warm, please add: - a good hat. Your body will sacrifice a lot of is heat to keep your brain warm. A good hat will make the rest of your warmer. - insulated, waterproof boots. Make sure they are insulated. - wool socks. Not crappy 10% wool, but at least 70% there is no substitute - for me, gaiters are a must. Zip up or snaps (Velcro always wears out first). I'm in and out of the car so often and driveways and parking lots are just slush pits, so having a simple solution to keeping the cuffs off my pants and my shoes dry is vital.

For something a bit more affordable, the Osprey Nebula or North Face Recon are both solid picks. They’ve got plenty of space for books and gear, and the stitching holds up really well even with one-shoulder carrying.

  I like the look of Canada goose coats especially with the fur trim, plus they (idk if it’s all models or just some) have back pack straps so u can still have your coat secure to your body but without wearing the sleeves on your arms but all my life I’ve worn north face puffer jackets growing up in the pnw which have been good for cold weather, rain, and snow (when paired with a heavy coat or a thermal) I’ve heard good things about arcteryx but I’ve never owned one ETA: my current north face jacket my parents bought for me in middle school and I still wear today :) also I think they have lifetime warranty but idk

  What are the use cases for the jacket you want? I have different jackets for different purposes. I don't really like to wear my outdoor sports jacket / systems to work even on sub zero days. I also don't want to wear the jacket I wear to work for outdoor activities. I have a nice looking Patagonia down jacket that is good for business purposes on really cold days when a heavy wool/cashmere overcoat is too dressy. I can't find the model name on it though. For outdoor activities technical wear layers are the most comfortable for me. I had a nice Northface layer setup with pit zips and adjustable chest ventilation for releasing body moisture during strenuous activity then closing them up when less active. I had it for over 25 years but it slowly shrank so that it didn't fit comfortably any more. My daughter now wears it. A down puffer and matching interconnecting Gortex shell is a great setup for most winter outdoor activities. Adding base layers for extra warmth then shedding them when needed is the most comfortable for me.

  Has anyone attempted a warranty claim for The North Face?

  My experience was great. I sent some photos online, they started my case, asked some questions, about the jacket damage, which for me was also the interior lining flaking off. (looked like very bad dandruff on a black jacket). They asked me to send in the jacket, which i did, and they approved the warranty claim. They can't find a current match to replace it with, so they sent me an e-gift card which I just used. Paid $20 difference for my new jacket. Pretty awesome if you ask me. I'm based in California if that helps anyone.

  I was going to say something similar. I've got half a dozen tents and have seriously put them through the ringer. The real MVP is UV and waterproof sprays for maintenance. I like nikwax best but have used all kinds of brands. And always throw some dessicant, like silica packets, in when you pack it up for winter. With the right treatment, I had a $25 Walmart tent be the only one in my camping group that made it through an absolute deluge. I have a Coleman that was up for almost 4 months straight and get regular use l, for weeks at a time, and is still going strong years later. But if you want my all-time favorite, can handle absolutely anything, it's TheNorthFace VE 25. Been through sand storms, blizzards, days of rain. But it's a bit of a pita to set up.

  I have two Big Agnes tents and really do like them a lot. I've probably owned too many tents in my time camping, but I've been impressed with them. But you do pay a bit more for them. I've used friends REI tents and they're great for the price and a casual camper. As you said as well, TNF makes a killer tent too. Lots of good options, it's all about finding the one that fits your needs and budget.

  Patagonia Fitz Roy or the North Face Nuptse. These jackets are inherently not really BIFL as in they can be quite fragile, but Patagonia has a lifetime warranty. Ive sent my Fitz Roy in for repair to Patagonia numerous times over the last almost 20 years, and Patagonia strives to repair things than simply replace and throw in a landfill. And it's still warm as hell albeit shows its age. North Face will be more the style you are looking for based on this pic but Patagonia has the better repair warranty.

A heads up, the e-gift card requires a pin-make sure you find & use the pin. I reflexively used my pin and it locked the card, which ended up being an ordeal, but that's on me, not them

  To be fair to The North Face, I recently sent my 10+ year old backpack in to get repaired because the top handle was coming unstitched. I dropped it off at a TNF store. No charge. It came back fixed. 6-12 months later, it started ripping again, so I sent it in again. No charge. They decided not to fix it and gave me a gift card for the value of the backpack (like $80?) and I bought a new one. Pretty great warranty.

  Men's rain jacket that's actually waterproof

  The most important factor on a rain jacket is the dwr (durable water repellant) coating. DWR is a coating applied to a fabric like Gore-Tex which makes the water bead up and roll off the surface instead of soaking into the fabric. DWR does not make the fabric waterproof but it prevents the surface fabric from being saturated which traps moisture inside the jacket. Most waterproof fabrics will not lose their waterproofness but the DWR wars off and the jacket will "wet out". If you feel wet in a waterproof jacket, it is more than likely moisture or condensation coming from your body which is not able to escape the jacket. Maintaining your DWR finish is critical for the life of a jacket. Check out this link from Goretex for some illustrations on how it works. If you have a jacket that you liked in the past, there are ways to revitalize the DWR finish and can make the jacket feel like new.

  Great call.  I had my first north face Mcmurdo in the early 00s and it lasted me a good 15+ years, I donated it to a homeless guy as wanted a new one, although was nothing really wrong with it just general signs of wear.  Got myself a new mcmurdo and had it a about 10 years and it survived all weathers + 2 crashes/slides on my Vespa Scooter before I donated it to someone again as I wasn't so keen on the brand North Face.  TLDR: Incredible hard-wearing warm waterproof jackets that will last through anything and everything.

  North Face Bionic Apex jacket. My sister gave hers in 2012 that she'd already worn. It's been my main jacket through three seasons in the US Northeast. Comfortable from temps in the 60s down to the 20s. I don't like wearing brands, but this was a gift and it's just indestructible. Washes up like new after a good 15 years of constant wear. These are in the $200 range, but you can find them used in great condition. I just bought another one on Ebay for $38.

  Exped sleeping mat. It was the cheapest one and I've had it for 9 years. Very niche, but our Berg Kart (if that is the right English term lol). It was cheap because the steering colomn was crooked. Took it apart, straightend it, 2 years of fun for the kids. The North Face Duffelbag. It's 10 years old, still looks snazzy :) Fisher Price stacking/nesting cups. Random, I know. After 8 years of almost daily play in the shower, they still look so good.

  I second that, I got a North Face backpack around that age. I still use it 10 years later - a section of back padding got worn out but it's still perfectly practical and usable. Before that I couldnt even get a backpack to last me a full year

  Winter coats rain proof

  I’m from Mi and did a stint in Minnesota for a minute (regularly -20f weather lol). Either a North Face parka (they have a very good warranty policy), an Eddie Bauer, or a Fjallraven if you have the money. Usually the company sites rate them by warmth as well. Also would recommend getting my one that goes to just above the knees.

  Has anyone attempted a warranty claim for The North Face?

  They did deem it unrepairable, and sent a gift card. The redemption was a pain, only because I screwed it up. They send the gift card via email and there's a pin, I reflexively used my pin, which obviously was not the card's pin and locked me out of the card. Luckily the store associates were awesome and after a bit on the phone everything was good to go. So, make sure you know the pin and use it appropriately

  Has anyone attempted a warranty claim for The North Face?

  To answer your question, I would suggest sending the product in as they could repair it for free, provide you a quote for repairing it, or give you a discount for purchasing a new North Face coat. All of those option, will likely be cheaper than buying a new brand new coat out right without having gone thorough the company. I bought a North Face winter coat in January 2024. 1 year later, the zipper to close the jacket broke. On Feb 24, 2025, I wrote a brief description letter of the zipper problem, pictures of all tags and the condition of the the product including my name, address and contact telephone number. They provided me with a reference number and instruction to ship the item or drop off the item in person to their local repair center. Approximately 6 weeks later, I received my coat with the repaired zipper via Purolator delivered to my home address free if charge. When I was about to follow-up on my item, received it. I am beyond ecstatic about the level of customer service, integrity, transparency given by North Face. It was an easy and honorable process and for that, I will be only purchasing North Face jackets going forward.

  Merrel Moab 3s are tough as nails

  Check out the North Face Borealis They come in lots of different colors (some bright, some muted). It's a very popular college backpack where I live. I have had one for 4+ years and use it daily to bring my lunch, water, coffee, laptop, umbrella and paperwork back and forth to the office. I also use it when hiking/camping. The only wear is on the mesh pockets from the stainless coffee cup and water bottle. They have universal and women's designs that are cut differently.   If you take your jacket into a north face store or call customer service and ask them for a way to send it to them, they will repair it or replace it. I had a similar issue with a jacket and they repaired it like new

  Warmest socks recs!!

  Darn Tough Mountaineering Micro Crew Heavyweight Hiking Socks. They have an over the calf version too if you prefer higher topped socks. They are the only thing I will wear through MN winters now, haven't worn a pair out yet although I have a few that are starting to get close but I'm on year 5 or 6 with them so can't complain (and they will replace them when I finally do wear a hole through them). I got 7 pairs and just cycle through them every week so I only have to wash them once a week. The other thing that I pair them with are The North Face Thermoball booties, I got two pairs and alternate each day so I'm not wearing the same pair everyday, am on year 6 with the first 2 pairs I bought pretty much alternating them daily for 6 months at a time because MN winters last for forever... They are still going strong too.

  I bought a mcmurdo parka from the north face. So far so good. Also, here in Italy, it's almost always too warm to wear it. I really use it 3 months a year when I'm out at night or early in the morning. In Italy some other brands of bifl quality parka are moncler, add, colmar. I'd love to try a canada goose (or moncler) but they're out of my league since I'm on a low/mid 3 digits budget and those parka are usually 4 digits XD

  It happened again. Lining on my rain jacket is peeling off.

  They were good, but never bifl. I had a Columbia shell and zip in liner 30 years ago and the shell lasted about 5 years. The liner lasted longer. My most recent shell also lasted 5 years. The north face 3 layers gore Tex I had in between lasted more like 15, but it’s an entirely different type of jacket with different construction techniques.

  I’ve got the Northface arctic parka - I’ve had it about 4 or 5 yrs and it’s really nice and warm. I am petite (5’2) and it fits well even with layers underneath. It doesn’t get super cold in Seattle where I live but we go up into the mountains of Washington and Oregon a lot and it does get frigid there and I have always been absolutely comfortable wearing this parka, mittens and a hat.

  I got a North Face parka on sale 12 or 13 years ago and it is still awesome. It looks similar to the Arctic one but I'm not sure if they're the same make (mine looks puffier?). Never sheds feathers, still water resistant, zippers all still work, easy to wipe clean, great zipped pockets. It didn't fit while I was pregnant but otherwise I wear it hard every winter (outside every day, snow or slush; I have a lighter jacket for when I'm really moving, but I wear the parka hiking, snowshoeing, skating, etc if it's below minus 15 or 18 or so). I've carried fire wood around and the sleeves haven't gotten torn up, although I don't do too much outdoor work in the parka.

  Northface winter ski coat back in 2008 or so. Did the cliche / cocky thing where I went skiing with a lighter jacket because the temperature wasn’t that bad by the cabin then got on the hill and froze my butt off. Ended up buying a new coat at ski resort prices almost $500 But damn that coat still looks new with 15+ years of use. Worth every penny.

  I bought a north face triclimate in 2011, still wearing it today and it’s still like brand new, I’ve worn it in very cold temps skiing in Vail. Has held up great. I got it on clearance for like $120 but you can get them brand new in your price ranges.

  I have 3 of the North Face Arctic Parka coats (I buy them off Fb when I see them for under $75) and I adore them, I used to live in rural mountains and biked to work in the snow wearing the parka. The key is to make sure it’s 600 fill stuffing and Hyvent - waterproof. If it’s super cold, I wear long underwear and a 700 fill North Face vest under the coat and it has always taken care of me. I also run cold. I wonder if yours is a fake?

  North face down jacket. I've had one since 2008 and even had them replace a broken zipper for free about 10 years into owning it. Dutch oven has been amazing as well. My Honda HR-V. Maybe not quite BIFL, but it already has so much less maintenance required and fewer recalls than my previous Subaru. It's not as fun to drive, but I am fairly certain I'll have this car for the next two decades. Fail: Dyson cordless vacuum. Just so many issues with it. My husband has purchased some replacement parts, but the quality just feels like it's lacking.

  What's the oldest item you still use daily that has withstood the test of time, and what's its story?

  Cast iron pans from my great great grandparents. A North Face jacket I bought in 2008 still looks new. My 1974 Jeep CJ5 (used daily in the fact that I’m still rebuilding it). My Wolverine 1,000 Mile boots recently made it 11 years before being replaced and worn almost daily. Dad’s Realistic steeeo amp / speakers from the late ‘70’s.

  that's a goofy thing to say. my go-to snowboard jacket is a North Face from 2001 and the membrane is in like-new condition. the longevity of a gore tex membrane depends entirely on how the garment is used and how often it is washed. i'm not remotely surprised that gore is unwilling to repair a 10 year old jacket for free.

  What material water-resistant jackets are most breathable?

  Depends on your use case and climate. For example: On the trail: a poncho is probably your best choice, regardless of temperature. Although if it's really chilly (above freezing, though), a Gore-Tex shell with pit zips would be fine, albeit needlessly expensive. Opening the pit and front zips will allow it to dump heat as necessary. If you're going to be in a damp, snowy environment, I'd go with Gore-Tex (again, with zips). Waxed cotton will work, but Gore-Tex with mechanical ventilation will work better, be lighter, and is more easily stowed in a backpack. That said, a soft-shell may be a good option too, depending on how damp it is. If you're looking for something to put around town in, then a good umbrella and a soft shell or any half-decent rain coat is really all you need (I use a K-Way). Again, if it gets really cold (like, 0-5 C), GTX or any other proprietary waterproof membrane could be a good option, but GTX is likely overkill for a city setting. So, while soft shells, ponchos, other proprietary membranes, and waxed cotton all have their merits, I'm still inclined to go with Gore-TEX as a one-size-fits-all solution for the following reasons: \--It's still the gold-standard for water/wind protection. \--It offers the most versatility with respect to use cases and climates. \--It's lighter and more packable than other options. \--It can last a long time if properly cared for (I have a 25 year old North Face GTX shell that still performs very well). \--The limitations on its breathability can be mitigated via mechanical venting and maintaining the dwr coating. However, as with all things gear-related, YMMV. This is just one nerd's opinion.

  For me the futurelight jacket from North Face does the job. I live where it rains a lot and it’s windy and it works, while being very breathable, which was me is a must since I tend to get warm a lot and sweat. I also considered a couple of jackets from Patagonia (they were around the 300s for the model I considered)

  This is the right answer. The North Face, and other high-end ski companies, make great shells that you can zip a good mid-layer into. You want a shell with zip vents. Go for the performance lines if you want it to actually last. The mid-layer is basically a jacket in and of itself, and is used on non-rainy, and not super windy days. The shell should just be used when it's pouring or blowing really hard. You can't wash the shell. Atleast not often. And after you do you need to run it through the washer again with no soap and just Nikwax.

  I think you're on the right track with the North Face 3-in-1. People don't like the 3-in-1 because North Face positions it as a very serious jacket and it isn't. You'll be disappointed with a 3-in-1 if you're an ice fisherman, for example, but with what you've described I think you'll be more than pleased. One caveat you may want to keep in mind - BIFL and fashion don't usually go hand in hand.

  0 degree sleeping bag

  Get a hundred dollar mummy bag from Backcountry. If you have warm clothes to layer with, you can extend the temp range of whichever bag you choose. Also a nice inflatable sleeping pad will help with comfort and warmth. Personally, I have slept in an old 40 degree synthetic fill North Face bag on top of an old Kelty inflatable pad. This set up with sweat pants and a hoody has kept me warm enough in temps down to ten degrees Fahrenheit. Good luck with the van life! Also, a great alternative to an inflatable pad, is an old thick foam mat from your local surplus store.

  In that price range, buy 2nd hand if you can find it. Look for Mountain Hardwear/Higher end North Face. In your price range it is going to be a very heavy, very bulky bag....probably synthetic. Stay away from Coleman and other cheaper brands. North Face makes some inexpensive, lower end bags that would probably be on par with Kelty or REI brand. I'd stay away from those too. Honestly, I don't think you'll get BIFL quality for that price range (at least not brand new)
