What are your favorite niche BIFL items that are currently available?
Thermarest sleeping pads- Made in the USA and absolutely bombproof. My buddy has had his since the 90's and it still holds air perfectly well. Schott navy pea coats- I've had mine since I was 16 and still wear it. Super thick and timeless looking. I'll pass it down to my son someday. Kennedy tool chests- Still have my grandfather's machinist tool boxes and they're over 60 years old and the drawers are oh so smooth. They still sell the same ones today and the design hasn't changed one bit.

0 degree sleeping bag
I have a Marmot down bag and a Therm-a-Rest sleeping pad (without the pad, you'll just pull cold air from where your lower body compresses the bag and touches the ground). You should consider a sleeping bag insulation from air temps but a sleeping pad insulation from ground temps. A sleeping bag will not insulate you from ground temps because a sleeping bag works by having the air in the bag act as an insulator, and the bag beneath you has all the air squeezed out, so no insulation.

FYI you're going to want a sleeping pad in addition to a sleeping bag. The top of your body with the thick bag around it will be insulated, but the bottom, where all your weight is pressing down onto the bag, will compress the bag, make it thin, and aid in heat transference away from you (i.e., your back will "pull" the cold from the bottom of your van into your body). The filling of a bag itself isn't the insulator. The air trapped between the bits of filling is the insulator. The bag underneath you gets all the air pressed out of it under your body weight, meaning no insulation. The sleeping pad goes underneath you and the bag. Pad was necessary. 30 F temps in Iceland with no pad but a 15 F rated bag was fucking miserable.
