  My coffee maker needs replacement - but is Moccamaster more hype than BIFL?

  You want a buy it for life coffee maker?  But a stainless steel, thermos, French Press.  No filters to replace, though you might consider changing out the screen every ten years or so.  More or less unbreakable, makes great coffee, lasts forever, costs about  30.00-$40.00.

  Looking for a narrow tall insulated bottle

  I managed to find 600mL Thermos stainless steel metal flasks, with screw tops when recently travelling through Japan. Not sure how rare they are, but I grabbed two while I could. Same diameter as a regular soft drink can.

  I second Zojirushi. Thinksport is good as well. The classic stainless bottle she's thinking of is probably a Thermos brand though. They do have 16 oz, unfortunately without the handle. Coleman has some on their site. It's a sub brand named Contigo. We have a few of them and absolutely love them. They stay hot for a long time.

  With a new style of water bottle popping up every year, Which one have you stuck with?

  We used Nalgenes for decades and still do for camping. I wanted to get away from plastic and wanted an insulated option, so switched to the Thermo flasks from Costco. We've had a couple sets in rotation for years now. When working out, I find I need a controlled flow mouthpiece as I sometimes aspirate water, which always results in an instant asthma attack when it happens. So I picked up an Owala this spring after my daughter got one as a gift. I really appreciate the mouthpiece design and it's solved my aspiration issue, so it's become my primary bottle.

  I bought a kids Thermos water bottle in 2023 at Target. Not too big or too small so my travel water bottle. Now have an Owalo at work since we have water bottle fillers on our fountains. Great bottle except doesn’t fit car cup holders.

  Still using my thermoflask. Basic green. Change out the lids when I need to. Don’t put it in the dishwasher even tho I suppose I could. There’s something to be said for a 133 year old company. It’s basic, boring & going strong. So is our 30 year old boring green thermos.

  Thermos brand water bottle from around 1998. Keeps my water cold and fits ice cubes. Most of the paint is chipped off and it has a lot of dents, but it’s been around the world with me. Only holds 500ml but that’s more than enough for me for a day.

  Why are we allowing posts that are not in the spirit of BIFL?

  The real issue is “same model, different quality.” For example, a steel thermos from the 1980s is about 150 g heavier than its 2025 “updated” sibling—heat retention isn’t even close. Or vintage cast-iron comes glass-smooth; today’s versions need sanding so food won’t weld on. And old solid-brass zippers outlive the coat; modern “eco” ones lose teeth after two winters. Makers shave metal and swap screws for rivets so you’re back shopping in five years. That’s why “mine has lasted decades” isn’t enough; quality continuity has to be part of the rule. If the latest revision is watered down, label it Candidate, not BIFL.

  I find the actual Thermos brand to be the best. I have a Thermos coffee travel mug that I've used since 2016 that keeps coffee hot all day (warm-ish by end of day). It has been dropped so many time, I've had to bang it with a hammer so the bottom is flat. Same experience with larger thermos' and the soup/meal type.

  I have a regular 40oz Thermos brand one. I dont think you need a more fancy thermos here, its a very simple technology. Your issue is probably you aren't leaving as little air space as possible. Air space is your enemy and will cool the liquid faster as you keep opening to take sips every now and then. I make coffee the night before at like 10-11PM. Wake up at 4. Coffee is still too hot to drink, need pour some out to cool it in a mug for a 5+ mins. At work it doesn't cool to a comfortable drinking temperature till 11-noon. I leave the thermos open at work till it stops pluming steam out the top around 7am if I want more sooner.

  I have used a cycling water bottle before. It can keep water cool, but it only lasts for half a day. It is designed with a compartment, which is lighter than a thermos bottle, but the price is higher. If you really want to keep water cool, I prefer a thermos bottle, which is relatively cheap but heavier.

  People who bought new Stanley in last 3 years, are you happy with it?

  The trendy new cups are surprisingly good. Normally when a blue collar brand makes a big hit product, the quality of that product, then their entire line goes quickly to shit. As of last year, well into the trend, the bougie cups were still pretty good. I'm still rocking my 10 year old Thermos, after replacing a smaller 25 year old one that I gave to a friend, so I don't know how, or if, their core line has changed.

  Huh, that's what we have too. Maybe it lost it's vacuum, or just misses a bunch of heat from it's lid. I admit that i assumed just foam insulation because of the construction and the performance. But, at least the main part of the container claims to be vacuum insulated. I bet the lid is foam or just air gap though, since it's plastic.

  My husband does use the Thermos brand thermos for coffee and food storage. It’s the old style metal containers with the narrow tops. If for any reason the Thermos is no longer keeping the contents hot or cold as stated, they will replace it. I had one coffee thermos replaced and on a food container they replaced the plastic screw in portion of the lid. Stanley also has a good warrenty and stands behind their products, Thermos does as well and I’ve been happy with them and will continue to buy them. We also had a TAL canteen (I believe they also sell food containers at Wal Mart) and tried to contact them to buy a new lid since theirs actually broke (Thermos lid never broke, just stopped insulating) and no one would get back to me to even let me buy a replacement lid so was not happy about that. The only reason we got Thermos instead of Stanley was because Stanley cost almost twice as much.

  I have the Thermos brand one for kids that my child uses (the one with the spoon under a flip portion on the top) - and I sub in the school, so I checked if it was actually warm still. I pack it hot at about 7am and at noon, it's still warm enough to be a bit steamy when opened. Occasionally, it'll get brought home because school lunch was more appealing, and it's still warm at 4pm. I do have a non-researched theory that the size of the container vs volume of contents will matter - the fuller you have it, the warmer it seems to stay. But seriously, it's just a suspicion I have. So I make sure to purchase the appropriate size for what I'm keeping warm.

  You’re looking for 32oz. Right? I don’t have any of those. I like them. They hold their temp. The double lock is easy and secure. And they just look nice. I use them for coffee, soup and sometimes drinks. But the opening is so small it doesn’t fit my big fat mouth and I can’t get ice cubes into them. Looks like the bigger ones have the same issue. So I mostly use thermos brand and leave the zojirshis to my kids

  My 35 year old Stanley and my 25 year old Thermos keep coffee or tea ( Stanley for coffee , Thermos for tea) hot until the next day if needed, now if we can just figure out how to keep stuff hot in a PARTIALLY full vacuum bottle.( or Dewar flask if you prefer).

  Question is what's going in the thermos and what form factor does it need to be? For example: -Stanley's fit in cup holders where a lot of similar products do not. That's a killer feature for a lot of people. -For coffee/tea, Contigo is cost effective, keeps coffee hot for hours, and lasts forever -Hydroflasks keep water cold forever, but only the tiny ones fit in cupholders -Thermos has great designs for food storage that many other brands do not etc etc

  I have a Direct Drink Thermos double-walled flask. I don't use it every day, though. Sometimes I use it for a few days, then don't use it for some weeks, but I've used it over the course of maybe 3 years now? So far it's held up fine, although I found that it leaked a little recently but I feel this might be because I put the cap onto the bottle whilst the cap was closed, making me wonder if it traps air. I normally attach the cap whilst open and then when fully screwed on, will close the cap. Never had leakages before.

  Zojirushi is a fantastic brand as far as insulated bottles and jars go. They are pricier than Thermos brand but worth the added cost. That being said Thermos makes a damn good product.   Go to the camping section at your local walmart, and look for an ugly green metal one that says "thermos" on it in big letters. I have forgotten that one on top of my car numerous times, just to turn around half way to work, and go pick it up out of a snow bank, and my coffee is still hot all day long. That is looking to be the cheapest option, as they are anywhere from $13-$20.

Zojirushi is what you want to buy.   Water bottle that looks like...a water bottle.

  This might not be what you're looking for, but it seems close enough that I wanted to mention it. I like the [Thermos Intak](http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001EGO64U) water bottle. I've got a couple of them. It's got a small spout which makes is easy to drink from. The top is easy to open, but also has a secondary latch that ensures it won't spring open by accident while in a bag (say, with electronic devices). It's durable like a Nalgene but, in my opinion, less unwieldy. (More wieldy?) It's also got a little counter on the lid to keep track of how many bottles you've consumed, but that feels more gimmicky than anything to me.
