  Daily driver laptop thats lasted 22 years.

  Same! Found a t440p thinkpad at a garage sale for 25 bucks--replaced the screen, trackpad, memory, processor with a faster one I found on ebay from a chinese seller, storage with a cheapo ssd, new li-ion battery, and overstock old ram--installed linux. Only cost me 175 total or so, which is insane (including the cost of the laptop itself) Literally the best little laptop I've owned and continue to use... and the best thing about old thinkpad laptops is that they are SERVICEABLE!

  Yep. I bought a used Thinkpad off of eBay probably 7 or 8 years ago to use as a garage computer. I've installed a couple of different flavors of Linux on it since then, but it's still running great. I have to keep it plugged in anytime I want to use it because the battery is pretty much shot, but the OS is 100% functional even with that old hardware.

  Yes I have that one too and can feel the quality with it. It’s been a while since I used it but I remember the keyboard feel being very nice. The only real thing that was worn was the paint on the bottom. I installed FreeBSD on it, but it’s a dinosaur so even basic web browsing shows the age. The T420 is good for sure. An SSD and the ram capacity extension bios flash gave a breath of life for several years. I have issues with mine like the bezel cracked in several spots, the rubberized coating on the lid got sticky, and the clit mouse stopped working. (One of the biggest Thinkpad joys.) The keyboard irrigation system was mind blowing and I forgot about that feature. I’ve had it work before and the realization goes from shock to “oh yeeeeah” as your lap starts getting wet. I remember an electrocution test they did which was on YouTube. Sometimes chicklets can feel nice, especially on MacBooks, but the keys tend to wear down when you type a lot. Some models are terrible though and the keys get stuck when they’re dirty.

  Yep, I got a thinkpad from 2016 and I just run Linux Mint on it. That is sometimes its own kinda hell, but it has a Disc drive, an SD card slot, full size USB ports, and a removable battery.

  Which laptop should I buy in 2025?

  ThinkPads; they’re tanks with keys, built **really, really** well and usually the favorites across all industries (from offices to construction). They have some very interesting features. maybe buying a new one is expensive, but 80% of regular people get them second-hand, giving them a new life. They’re cheap, and if something breaks, the replacement part can be found in seconds and for very little money. You can even swap parts between models (my screen is from a T14 and the keyboard from a T450, btw, mine is a T490 with an i5). They’re the best laptops for their price / quality ratio; their only downside is that they don’t have a GPU for gaming, some do, but then the price goes way up.

  Which brands/products have gotten better over time?

  If you buy a business class laptop like a high end thinkpad and slap Linux onto it, that thing could outlast you. Consumer class tech is mid and doesn't last more than 5 years but then again most iPods only need a battery replacement...but yeah monitors and TVs are way better now.

  PLEASE HELP IM LOOSING MY MIND

  The answer used to be thinkpad but they've been soldering in more and more of the hardware and I think they're pretty hard to repair and keep running now. Even so my work Thinkpad yoga L13 is pretty sturdy, not too heavy, and does have pretty great battery life. I think they still pass some sort of Mil-spec test for shock and spillages(?). Non of the interface stuff (screen, touchpad, keyboard) is as good or sturdy feeling as my MacBook Air however.

  I don’t think here’s the right he place to post this but I’ll throw in my thoughts. No laptop you ever find will be “buy for life” or without issues. Computers, like cars and other machines, will not just work. There will always be a time when they are out of date or an issue arises. All laptops will also have reviews of some issue h to hat caused them to break. That being said if you are looking for a mid to high end one, almost all will work well. If you want something that has a good track record but isn’t super flashy, I’d recommend any workstation thinkpad.

  Brands That Used to Be BIFL — But Aren't Anymore?

  Still Thinkpad! there lately has been, however, a certain tradeoff between repairability and aesthetics (which I can't blame them for: it was probably difficult to promote chunky computers in the face of the macbooks of the world) and, additionally, some small issues that didn't use to happen. All in all, though, I would (and do) still recommend buying a second hand Thinkpad to anyone who wants the best bang for the buck.

  Don’t underestimate old laptops.

  Every personal laptop I've ever purchased has been a refurb of whatever work laptop I had and liked. Thinkpads, Latitudes and Elitebooks. They eventually get updated from Windows to Ubuntu or Linux Mint. They'll all probably be with me until I die or whenever parts are no longer available.

  What's the best BIFL item you own?

  For me, it’s my old ThinkPad X220 - over a decade later, still rock-solid, keyboard feels amazing, and parts are easy to swap. Also my Sony MDR-7506 headphones... built like tanks, great sound, zero fuss. Both have survived drops, spills, and constant use without missing a beat. True bifl champions in my setup.

  I buy refurbished business laptops. They are build well and last if you take care of them. Thinkpads are great for this. You get massive bang for the buck on those! One of mine is nearing 20 years old and works great. Just make sure to change out any HHDs for an SSD. It'll really speed it up for day to day tasks.

  Depending on your application I would suggest a Thinkpad T480. They are old now. But, cheap and repairable. Do some research on here. some newer lenovos are recommended I believe. But, they just are not the same.

  Laptop sold as refurbished aren't really refurbished, they're essentially second hand and have been (hopefully) fully tested and restored to factory. Having said that, I would now only ever buy used ThinkPads, a far better investment than buying brand new consumer grade machines.

  it sound like a used T or X series Thinkpad it all he really needs - honestly just buy what he already uses, he doesn't need all the bells a whistles of something new nor all the BS they put on them... plus if he's about to retire he's probably old enough to have no desire to learn any of it anyway. My Mom needed a new computer about a year ago so I got started building her a really good solid Thinkpad only to realize half way through that it was going to be far too much for her & ultimately just ended up buying her an updated version of the Dell she was already using and used to

  What is your current BIFL item you recommend to everyone?

  I'm calling bullshit on those claims, because they fly in the face of reality. My experience has *also* been the exact opposite of what you describe, and my background is also in tech with previous work in IT. You're the only person I've *ever* encountered who would claim Thinkpads are not worth fixing. They're famous for being quite repairable, and there's a reason there's a huge resale market for Thinkpads (just like for Macs). I've worked with both Mac and Thinkpad systems for decades (plural) although my newest system is Framework. I'll buy that Apple systems can be durable as long as you don't need to repair/upgrade but your claims about Thinkpads are simply false. > Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon lasts about 4-5 years in daily business use Bullshit. Companies lease for 3-5 years because the hardware becomes outdated and the asset value depreciates rapidly. It's not worth keeping laptops for longer than that... including Macs. There's a huge secondary market for off-lease corporate and institutional Thinkpads, because they *will* last as much as a decade plus. I still occasionally get comments and question on posts I made about repairing Thinkpad X230 and similar systems, in the mid 2020s... and that's a 2012 model. People absolutely still buy and use them, often running Linux, and if you hop over to r/thinkpad you'll find people showing off running systems going back much further. The vast majority of ex-lease Thinkpads still work just fine, and they sell like hotcakes on that secondary market. Wipe them down, clean the fan or blow it out with compressed air, maybe swap the thermal paste for good measure, and they're basically good as new. > It’s still dead silent and runs like new. I have the Macbook Air 2022 in use currently. Tell that to my partner's 2020 Macbook Pro, whose fans spin up constantly and intensely seemingly without reason. You're falsely conflating the difference between ARM and x86 processor energy demands with the lifespan of the hardware.   Finding Laptop To Buy

  Dude you said budget friendly and people here are saying macbook's.if you dont mind second hand go for any M series Macbook. People are starting to upgrade from M1 so maybe that might fit your bill. If you arent to worried about Operating System then go for a thinkpad. The only way to get really good hardware and be budget friendly is learning linux. If your up for it i think you can find an older thinkpad that gets better optimised by a linux OS like Ubuntu

  If your only concern is saving money over the long term then I would agree with the 600 other commenters as far as computer suggestions. But if you have other concerns such as not buying a disposable computer and trying to increase the life of just the one laptop then go with a custom built gaming laptop or pc. Find a custom pc builder near you and ask them for the lowest build that will meet your needs. Likely around $900-1000 for light gaming like COD, Fornite, Sims; even less money if you play like mystery/puzzles. Get as far as you can until it gets slow and then go back to the same pc builder for upgrades. It may cost only a little less than a new one, but you are still using the same laptop and not creating waste. To add to some of the comments I read about gaming laptops such as Alienware and MSI, these are incomparable to options like MacBooks and Thinkpads because you are able to change out components on gaming laptops. And while Apple has amazing repairs services they aren’t going to help your laptop keep up with technology. They will try to sell you a new one with trade in values.

  Business grade Dell or Thinkpad. I have Thinkpads from over 10 years ago that still run fine today. Business grade machines are on another level. Laptops and desktops. And often you can get nice deals on used fairly new models. Business and schools liquidate every so often and upgrade. Then you see scuds of em on the second hand market.

  Laptops have generally become substantially more durable since SSD came along. I am running a 2018 Dell here. But the old Thinkpads were like tanks in build quality, I had one before my Dell. The more recent ones may still last long, but it's not the same build quality as before when I was looking to replace my old one.

  I use my MacBook Pro's for at least 6 years at a time, could probably use them longer but I typically choose to upgrade just because I want a new computer. I have friends who still use the ThinkPad X200's they bought off eBay for $70 and installed GNU/Linux themselves.

  For BIFL, I’d skip HP at this price point, build quality and longevity aren’t great. Look for a refurb ThinkPad (T or X series) instead, built like a tank, easy to upgrade, and will outlast most consumer laptops. You’ll thank me in five years!

  This is true of everything with components that can't be visually examined for defects, but laptops and computers especially, in my experience - nothing has 100% reliability. I think that standards for reliability have also been dropping recently as well. For physical durability and build quality short of tank laptops like the Toughbook Thinkpads are an excellent choice. For component durability it's all a crapshoot, essentially, unless you're willing to go with older laptops.

  I just bought a Thinkpad 11e (AMD) with 128gb SSD on Cyber Monday for drumroll..... $200. Yes it's an 11.6" screen and yes that screen's viewing angle leaves a lot to be desired but holy hell, this is NOT the build quality of a $200 laptop. This thing doesn't have the cheap-o plastic flex and it's rugged (probably not to the extent as the aforementioned T or X series though).
