LL Bean Engineer boots (2013, top) vs 2025 "Bucksport" (bottom). Am I crazy or are these a drop in construction quality?
Chippewa no longer really makes any heritage stuff and has had a drop in quality. No idea who makes LL bean but they still say Goodyear welted but for 200 probably not great. Other brands worth looking at Red Wing (300+, unless you wait for Seconds) Wolverine (notch below, do not pay more than 200-250 for 1000 miles) Thursday (200 and probably close or maybe a bit better than that Bean) Urban Wolf Club (170, better than thursday but long wait times) After than you satrt getting into Grant Stone, AE, etc and north of 500 bucks

Ok but Made in Mexico is about the same as made in canada or the usa though. Volkswagens and Toyotas are made in mexico. Its a cut above made in Indonesia. You ever buy a a made in mexico fender guitar? Its essentially the same guitar, all they do is add cheaper electronics and dont roll the fretboard to nerf it (easy fixes). So made in mexico is actually really good quality nowadays especially with certain goods like clothes and shoes. Thursday boots are pretty damned good boots for 200 dollars, theyre made in mexico. Saddleback leather bags are all made in mexico.

Chippewa lace up with round toe. Had a Jcrew version in a cordovan color that I’d wear with a suit, chinos or jeans. Might be able to find those gently used on the resale market for just under $200. Great, versatile, weatherproof with vibram sole. Looks like they make their own version called Jcrew field boot now. And what I see on the Chippewa site now is slightly less officey than the old Jcrew ones I see, but still office appropriate. Thursday boot also looks solid, but I don’t have experience with them. Main things you want are good materials and well constructed. Get full grain leather, or rapello suede, Goodyear welt & rubber lug sole - like vibram. The lug sole won’t last as long as a leather bottom more dressy option, but it is what you need for your schlep, especially in the elements.

Recommendations for Derby/Oxford style dress shoes?
No problem. So, from a construction / longevity point of view, Beckett Simonon mostly use a Blake stitch, not a Goodyear welt. Blake is much better than a glued (cemented) sole and can be resoled, but: – Not every cobbler has the machine for it. – Each resole takes a little more out of the leather, so you usually get fewer “lives” out of the shoe than with a Goodyear or storm welt. If your top priority is maximum lifespan and easy resoles, I’d still lean toward a Goodyear-welted pair (Thursday/Meermin Linea Classic or anything similar you like the look of). If you particularly love a Beckett design and you’re not wearing them hard every day, they can still be a solid option – just worth knowing you’re trading a bit of potential lifespan for that sleeker Blake-stitched look.

Not bangs that give this look
I can't see the pic you shared, but I've had a pair of Thursday Quests in a dark oxblood for about one year and they still look shiny & great, are comfortable for walking and standing, and are cute enough for my 22yo daughter to steal. The lug heels & soles are rubber, but harder than sneakers, and the tread is quite deep so only starting to wear where it is fine. They do crease a bit but the leather is thick so with proper storage and care I expect to have them for years.

Clothing and footwear brands that hold up over time
Boots: red wing, bobbies, Thursday. Anything resolable will last forever. Clothes: J Crew especially on sale,Patagonia, madewell, Huckberry has some good men’s stuff too although can be a little pricy. I would generally stick to natural fibers with the exception of technical pieces like a ski jacket or workout shirt Care: the most important piece to lasting as long as possible. Re-oil your boots as needed as they’ll be susceptible to faster wear if they dry out. For clothes, learn when and how to wash different garments. Clean freakz on tik tok is a great source for all things laundry but in short, don’t actually wash your clothes until they need it due to smell or stains. Natural fibers especially tend to be more odor resistant than things like polyester. If you’re just doing a standard wash for stinky clothes, cold wash is probably all you need save those hot washes for when you really need to get stuff out. Also get a front load washer if you can it’s much easier on your clothes then a top loader. Finally lower heat on your dryer if you can adjust that it’s easier on your clothes. Heat and friction are what really kill the longevity of your clothes

Walking Shoes Recommendation?
Birkenstocks for everyday sandals, or Bedrock sandals if you want a pair of hiking sandals that can double-time as casual sandals Basic canvas sneakers (e.g. Converse) for quick and casual errands, or leather sneakers if you want something a bit smarter. I personally like Converse slip-ons (they look like laceless versions of the All-Stars) An inexpensive pair of Goodyear welted boots (e.g. Thursday Captain) for everything else. Just go Asian-style and wear socks or go barefoot indoors instead of dedicated "lounge shoes."

Same here. Everyone saying a single daily pair of shoes can't last more than a year hasn't owned a pair of Timberlands original full grain leather boots. I've recently replaced my mostly daily 6+ year old boots with a brand new pair, but the new one is just for looks and for SHTF events. The only pair of shoes I'd trust for a zombie apocalypse. My old pair is still heavily used for rough trekking in sand, snow, mud, etc. It just needs a cleaning and wax every several months or so. Not the same style OP is looking for, but it works for me. At this point I cycle through several pairs of different shoes but none will last as long as my last pair of Timberlands. For OP's style preference, Thursday boots are great but won't last nearly as long.

I watched way too many Rose Anvil videos and had a similar take on the Alden Indy’s after cutting them in half saying that they definitely weren’t built to that price point. I’ve got 3 pairs of Thursday boots and I really like them. I’ve put the most miles on the President and Diplomat, but have the black Cadets for my actual dress boots no problems with any of them.

Thorogood’s BFL? Even though I found them in the dumpster?
They are GREAT for free, but I would never pay. If you’ve ever seen them cut in half (you can find it on YouTube), you’d know they severely cut corners now. Their construction is not what it used to be, especially for the price, so you might as well go with Thursday or Jim Green and save yourself the money for similar (in most cases *actually better*) construction. However, even after their decline, I would never turn down some free Thorogoods.

Boots that will last a long time
I've had some Austrian ones for a few years now, got a new sole on them now because I wore the original one into nothing but they're my first pair of boots that haven't fallen apart within a year. Unlike my Wolverine boots, which cost more (surplus was $60 before shipping, Wolverines were $100 at Farm and Fleet) and didn't last whatsoever.

I would hope that $4-500 boots would be significantly better than $2-250 boots. Grant Stone compares to Parkhurst, Oak Street, Truman and the like. There is no comparison to Thursday. It would be like saying a Lexus is better than a Hyundai. Thursday offers a good value at $200, and are far from the floor. They should be compared to Johnson and Murphy's, Allen Edmonds, modern Florsheim and the DSW brands. For the under $300 brands they amongst the better options out there. They don't offer the value of Urban Wolf Club but they are a better mass market option. The problem is they attract people that have never bought "expensive" boots before, or are coming from sneakers and have no idea what to expect. The amount of welt joints posted on the Thursday sub thinking they are a defect is incomprehensible.

Sneakers or boots for daily wear.
Get a pair of boots with leather upper, Goodyear welt and cork insole. the Goodyear welt will allow for your outsole to be replaced endlessly. The leather upper, if you take care of it, can last a lifetime, and the cork will eventually mold to your foot, making it extremely comfortable. However, the initial break in period will be uncomfortable until the leather stretches and the cork starts to deform more. I have a pair of Thursday boots and Red Wings. But there are tons of people over on r/goodyearwelt that can help

Make sure you buy them well in advance so you can break them in before you travel. I have a pair of Thursday Presidents that once broken in are very comfortable. They have a faux Dianite rubber sole and Poron insoles.

Fair warning: Thursday makes GREAT boots but in my experience they run a little tight/small compared to other boots of the same style made from cheaper materials. Even now that I’ve fully broken mine in, I wish I’d ordered them larger. Highly recommend, just something to keep in mind!

No problem! I actually bought another pair made by Beckett Simonon (not sure if I spelt that right) that had the same premise of Thursday and found that pair to be significantly worse than the Thursday sneakers. I wanted to try something else but the pair from Beckett wore through the inner lining very quickly when I’ve never had any issues with the Thursday sneakers. So morale of the story is just stick with Thursday lol

Thursday boot company…any good?
I've had a pair of Captains for four years now. Much of that daily wear for work, they've seen dirt, mud, snow, water, and everything else. I've had the rubber part of the heel replaced once ($35 at the local cobbler). The insoles are completely toast though. I had to rip them out and replace with some standard inserts.
