  Getting smells out of a vintage Jansport Backpack

  The people who have said you need enzymes are correct. I had some linens that had a musty smell after being pulled out of storage. It just wouldn't go away. I finally concocted this strange mixture - enzyme heavy washing detergent (I use Tide Free & Clear Oxi), 1 oz Nature's Miracle odor removal laundry add-in, 1 scoop oxi clean, at least 1/4 cup of white vinegar, and a tsp of Bissel Pro Pet Urine Eliminator carpet cleaning concentrate. It might be overkill but it works. The carpet cleaner was a small stroke of genius born out of desperation. The smell went away and stayed away.

  Powdered tide or gain or 365 sport detergent from Whole Foods. Any laundry detergent with lipase. You want the enzymes. Also use Biz.

  Washing machine, I know it gets asked about a lot but…

  I bought a pair of whirlpool machines (metal tubs) with a zillion reviews from lowes 12 years ago and they have made it through cloth diapers and a big family. I've had to replace a few parts in the dryer, but their cheap and easy to diy repair. For washing dirty stuff you want a top loader. I would recommend getting one that has the option for two rinses. A few other tips from someone who has washed a lot of pee out of things....Cotton jammies and sheets can be very helpful. Also don't use detergents with fabric softener or fragrances as they can coat or cling to items. Of the mainstream detergents Tide free and clear gets a lot of love in the cloth diapering community for rinsing out clean. It has been my go to through the diapering and bed wetting years.

  Don't put your shirts in the same laundry load as heavy items with zippers and velcro. That's the biggest reason why shirts end up with holes. Wash your clothes in cold water with a high quality laundry detergent like Tide. Never use fabric softener, scent beads, or dryer sheets. Hang dry delicate and stretchy items. Use the dryer on low or medium heat, again separating things with zippers and velcro and anything that can snag fabric. Unless you are doing work that causes you to regularly snag or burn your shirts, laundering them properly should make your shirts much longer than 3 years.

  Do you buy eco-friendly products?

  i do use some "ecofriendly" products, but there are some normal products that work so much better, and in mi mind, no worse than the suposed better for the eco. as you generally have to use a lot more of the weal products..you can't beat products like Dawn, and cold water tide. i wind up using way less, than the others. IMHO.

  Tide sticks work wonders on coffee stains on clothing. I'm not sure if they would help here, but I think it's worth a shot

  Got our speed queen about 2 years ago and no issues with clothing damage or wash quality luckily. Replaced a front load samsung and would never buy anything other than SQ from now on tbh. Using All free and clear or tide scentless/dyeless detergents.

  Tide pods hygienic clean-free and clear. I also stopped using fabric softener for the most part and greatly decreased my detergent use. I would throw 2-3 pods in a load and. Ow I wash smaller loads with 1 pod.

  I use warm water for nearly everything. The detergent doesn’t dissolve in the cold tap water that goes into my machine in the winter. I use about a tablespoon of Tide free. I use vinegar in the first rinse to get the soap out. Then the second rinse is cold water that gets the rest out.

  Not good imo. We used to use Kirkland brand but in the last 2 years it changed formulation and now it doesn't clean anymore. We switched back to Tide.

  Everything here is right on, but very few specific recommendations for detergent :) I use either the Tide Free & Gentle High Efficiency Hygienic Clean or the Tide Free Ultra Oxi Liquid . The caveat being that these may be exclusive to Target. I know the Hygienic Clean used to be. At any rate, beware that exclusive deals are a thing. The other thing people here have noted is use much less than the either the directions on the bottle or the little cup you pour the detergent into in you machine say. I use maybe 2 Tbsp for a large load. The one other thing I add Borax to the wash as well, 1 to 2 Tbsp. It really helps with odors in particular.

  Tide pods hygienic clean free and clear work amazing for our household of 3 dogs, 2 teenage boys, and my husband and oldest son who work outside manual labor jobs. Never need rewashing unless I’m treating a missed stain. We are all bound to dermatitis from detergent.

  It's probably your detergent. Can't recommend persil enough. If you don't wanna try that, tide is the next best. Worked for a cleaning company for a few years and we used persil on all our cleaning rags. That got out some crazy stains!

  I’ve had mine for 10 years now. We have an enormous family, it’s not unheard of to do 8-10 loads a day. I’ve used Tide and now Charlie’s, never an issue. Could it be a water issue? I’ve had to use in-wash water softener made for laundry at some houses with hard water.

  I wash almost everything on permanent press. Seems to be the sweet spot on not being too rough or too gentle. I have TR-7, not sure if you have the same model. Laundry detergents in general have gotten too gentle. I think only tide and persil really work. You might need more in a high water washer than you did in your front loader.

  One of my best friends works in R&D for a major company that makes soaps and detergents, and they are always trying to come up with a competitive product to Tide. It’s just really fucking good and it’s a step above a lot of the competition. I would love to find an alternative, but anything else is kinda handicapping your washer, unfortunately.

  I use many Seventh Gen/ Eco friendly products EXCEPT laundry detergents. It never seems to clean the clothes and they come out of the wash smelling like I used nothing at all. I use the free and clear versions of Tide or Arm and Hammer in my commercial top loading Maytag (it was a tossup between that or a Speed Queen) in cold water and everything comes out clean.

  I have a speed queen. My towels are 30 years old and I don’t have any trouble with them coming out clean. My water heater is turned up to about 140°, and I use hot water. I use a little bit of tide detergent, the unscented version. I usually put it on a soak cycle. I like my towels to soak in the hot water. Then in 20 minutes I go down and reboot it to warm water wash and cold water rinse. I put one cup of vinegar in the warm water. That gets the soap out. Seriously, I have no idea why your towels would be coming apart.

  Can't say anything about the machine itself but the only 2 brands of detergent worth buying are Tide and Persil (Kirkland's Signature is fine because it's made by Persil). In Consumer Reports rankings 17 of the top 20 spots are one of those 3 brands. Deft Pacs is the highest rated not of those brands at #11. 7th Gen's highest rated is scored at 55 (vs Tide Plus Ultra Stain Release at 84) and is ranked in the 30s. If you want something wtih no fragrance, Tide Plus Hygienic Clean 10x Heavy Duty Power Pods is the best rated fragrance free.

  Have used the tc5 for close to five years now. It cleans everything I have thrown at it with no problem. Never had the problem you are describing. Regularly wash dog bedding and towels used to clean muddy dog paws. The washer gets the dirt stains out no problem. We use Tide and tide pods for the detergent though as I have found the eco/weaker type of detergents to not clean as well for the dog stuff.
