  Please Help Me Choose!

  Its $185 new, but I love the Timbuk2 Authority Laptop Backpack Deluxe. Have used this bag daily for 4 years, traveled with it and stuffed it full of junk. It has held up remarkably well despite my abuse. The laptop pocket is internally suspended so if you drop the bag, your device/s are protected. The tablet sleeve in the main pocket is also off the bottom of the bag. The main compartment is not as wide as a swissgear, but it is tall. You should be able to fit everything you described above in it. Also the straps are the most comfortable out of any backpack i have ever used. Check out some youtube reviews on it and if you can justify the price, you wont regret it. The Authority delux version (there is a standard version also) has a zipper pocket in the second compartment which is useful for wires and stuff. See the third picture in the amazon listing.   What BIFL mistakes have you made?

  I’ve had a single Timbuktu messenger bag since 2010 and still use it daily.  You may prefer something else aesthetically, but it’s not like they hid what it looked like lol It’s 100% bifl.

  A few brands I'll probably stick with for life

  Chrome and Timbuk2 have both treated me well. I got a warranty replacement on my chrome bag 2 years after I bought it, and all I had to do was take a picture of the warranty tag cut out of the bag. Had a brand new one in a week, and didn't even have to pay shipping.

  Which Carry On is the Best?

  Timbuk2 makes a set of bags. The have a new model called FreeStyle that I don’t have any experience with but their older one called CoPilot is great. I have a medium as a carry on and I’ve done around a million miles with it. When a piece of plastic shell inside broke, I sent it back to them and they replaced it and sent the bag back to me.

  osprey from your list makes quality stuff - they're reliable if you want smth that works for both travel and outdoor use. timbuk2 is worth looking at if you want smth more urban/casual, tho the organization isn't quite as dialed in as some other options. for nomatic, [this one](https://d3oc4tmn8qmbnq.cloudfront.net/?q=GMKAO1784) might work - it's the 20l expandable version. should handle carry-on no problem. main thing tho - don't go bigger than you acc need. if you've got a 13" laptop, get a bag sized for that instead of going oversized 'just in case.' makes a real diff in comfort and weight.

  Stylist (women’s) work backpack that fits a 16” laptop

  A Timbuk2 Authority backpack is what I own, though I'm 4'11" in height so YMMV. It will fit a 16" laptop, but your bottle may have to go into the middle compartment to be carried comfortably. The side bottle pocket isn't very big, and due to there only being one bottle pocket, can lead to shoulder pain after a period of time. Not the best recommendation, but it's what I own and the brand has a range of well designed bags you can take a look at. I'm generally very happy with the pocket placements and the build of the bag.

  Need a backpack for everything

  Don’t get a leather backpack unless you plan on never getting it wet. I’ve had a Timbuk2 Spire for years now that I use while walking, cycling, and on my motorcycle. I use it for work, groceries, sports equipment, traveling, etc. It is my “do everything” bag and it excels. In general, I prefer a rucksack style bag unless you really need compartmentalization for delicates. Even then, I usually prefer having cases for my delicate things and tossing that in the bag.

  I have to spend $150 at amazon this week

  \- **Bag:** Timbuk2 Classic Messenger bag. I've had mine for 6 years used as a full-time commute/computer bag, occasional range bag, then as a diaper bag for a few years, then as my fishing bag most recently. The only issue I've had is a broken buckle but that was my fault closing it in a car door. **- Multi-tool:** Leatherman multi-tools: My dad had the same one 20+ years before he died. I've been using a Free p4 model for 4ish years with no issues through a lot of both hard use and daily use type tasks, and very little care (re-tightened screws twice and apply a little oil occasionally). **- Knife:** Essee Izula 2, affordable, great lifetime warranty, small enough to EDC and for delicate tasks, tough enough to baton wood, the blade shape and size make it very versatile. Does require basic care (dry and oil) and you may not like the sheath that comes with it. **- Wool blend Socks:** My smart wools have lasted me like 5 years, my wigwams are my most comfortable, my darn toughs are also great. **- Good underwear:** My ExOfficios have lasted seemingly forever. I've been married 9 years today and I'm pretty sure a few of the sadder pairs in my dresser are almost that old. Saxx are incredibly comfy but don't last. **- Light Jacket:** I've had a Patagonia Jacket since 2009 that is one of my more used jackets, patagonia repaired the main zipper two years ago for free/cheap. Jack Wolfskin wind shirt/jacket, also had since 2009 and it's been pretty brutally treated through Military stuff, backpacking, a short stint doing heavy pipefitting, and a lot of hunting/fishing. I've literally just partially retired it in the last few weeks for a Helikon-Tex Woodsman Anorak, I'll still keep the wolfskin for a farm work layer until it completely dies. **- Wallet:** I've had a Rogue Industries front pocket wallet as my only wallet since 2015, the only reason I need to replace it after 10 years is because I got the nylon one instead of the leather, pretty sure the leather would last at least 15-20 years. **- Water bottles/thermos:** Classic Nalgene bottles are very rugged and last forever. Classic Stanley thermos, it will take a house fire to kill it. My insulated Kleen Kanteen has also taken tremendous abuse and clumsiness.

  Honestly if you're a one shoulder strap carrying backpack it sounds to me like you should be looking into messenger bags instead. Perhaps my favorite messenger bag that I've ever purchased is the [Timbuk2 Classic Messenger Bag](https://www.timbuk2.com/collections/all-messenger-bags/products/1200cust-custom-classic-messenger-bag?variant=40578607317034). It's sturdy with heavy duty plastic clips, lots of spacious pockets, and comes in many different fun color combinations. It's also got a pretty good water wicking exterior with a waterproof inner lining so your stuff stays dry as long as you are not in a torrential downpour for an extended period of time. They're pretty spacious and you can get them with little reflectors hanging off of the clips. They also have a lifetime warranty on their products. I think I've had mine since 2011 or so and I got it second hand at a thrift store so it's probably older than that. If you bike this one's not too bad to wear while biking (though having a two strap carry backpack or panniers is obviously better).

  I bought my wife Deuters and it looks quite sturdy. And we both have Jack's Wolfskin jack pot deluxe backpacks and so far after 2 years they feel like new ones. We also both have Timbuk2 messenger bags but Timbuk2 also sells backpacks. These are bit pricey but after a year of almost every day use, occasional heavy grocery buying, and using during travel - probably the best bifl bag I have ever bought. Would recommend.

  Definitely agree on this. I carried a second hand Timbuk2 for about 6 years. Prior to that my boyfriend had it and used it for maybe 7-8 years, every single day. That bag got stolen from me, and I found it in a trash can, gave it wash, and kept wearing it. The only issue after 14 years of use was a couple broken zipper pulls. I saw a colleagues new one fall apart after 8 months or so and decided to look elsewhere when I bought a new backpack. The only reason I got a new one in the first place was because I needed more space.

  Which messenger bag should I get?

  If you’re carrying two laptops plus chargers lunch and bottles you want a bag that holds its structure. Otherwise everything will slump to the bottom and dig into your hip. Messenger styles with a wide base and some padding in the walls make a huge difference. The Commute is built for that kind of daily load and keeps its shape better than the slimmer options. The Bellroy stuff looks clean but tends to get tight once you add bulk like a lunch box and tumbler. I’d say go Commute if function matters most. If you want something more classic leather instead of nylon I’d look at Latico Leathers too since they’ve got bigger messengers that don’t sag.

  Searching for Everyday backpack

  You'll be hard pressed to find a waterproof all in one...if you look at timbuk2, Arc'teryx, maybe some paddle bags with roll top like NRS; that may have something. My go to is Osprey packs. Use a rain fly or some have one built in. I have used there warranty multiple times with very good success and support. My backpacking 85L is going strong 20yo.

  Second for Timbuk2 bags…I have a 25 year old messenger bag that is still going strong. Spent 8 years as my laptop bag for work, then 17 as a diaper/whatever bag transporting kid stuff as at home parent. That thing has seen a lot, and been a lot of places. All the zippers still work and the materials still look decent.

  I just went through a messenger bag/ briefcase buying spree on eBay. I got a buffalo Jackson, tumi, Timbuk2 and a Filson. I think the Filson is the winner for me but the other 3 are also very Solid pics. The Buffalo Jackson is a little big for me and the Timbuk2 was a little small. The timing is beautiful black leather and very practical but the Filson original briefcase just feels right to me for the style I’m going for. But you really couldn’t lose with any of them. Found them all on EBay, the Filson was of course the most expensive($230) and the Tumbuk2 was the lowest $60. The other two were $150 to 160

  Take it from me—rocked a messenger bag for years and it wrecked my shoulder. Ended up with nerve damage I’m still dealing with. Switched to a backpack (2 straps) and never looked back. If you’re dead set on a one-strap setup, at least get a padded shoulder strap add on from Amazon. It'll add some cushioning and helps keep it from sliding around and grinding into you all day. Your future self will thank you.

  Looking for Duffle Bag Recommendations

  I am partial to my Timbuk2 Wingman. It's been 11 years since I got mine and still going strong. Not necessarily a true duffle (more like a backpack duffle) but has more bells and whistles than a standard duffle.

  None brand new. If you are OK with non leather then something like Timbuk2 or Patagonia could fit the bill.

  Can't decide on a backpack

  I travel for work and use my timbuk2 daily. Only notable damage in the last 5 years is some really small wear on one of the lower padding squares from some rough concrete. The bag spends a lot of time on the ground or being stuffed into cars and under seats so I’d say that’s more than reasonable wear level.

  Bought myself and my wife Jack Wolfskin backpack. This thing will be given to my grand grand children I think. Also, got myself Timbuk2 messenger bag. Feels extremely sturdy. Good set of tools,/knives/cutlery is pretty much a bifl buy.

  Good ones: - 2004 Toyota Corolla, tbh - timbuk2 messenger bag, still very serviceable 15 years after I bought it used at a thrift store (although it hasn’t been my main bag the past 4 years). It shows wear, of course, but no structural issues - Ariat heritage paddock boots. I used and abused them for 15+ years in mud, snow, manure, barely ever cleaned or conditioned them Disappointments: every single pair of army surplus combat boots I’ve bought. They last me several years of hard field use at most. Mine always wear through at the crease in the toe, and/or the soles crack.

  After my Disneyworld with my family my old Jansport backpack just isn't cutting it anymore. Time for me to get an upgrade.

  I use Osprey for hiking and TimBuk2 for work and both have been very comfortable! I have obviously lugged my Osprey day pack for miles at a time (I back trampoline is amazing) and I have lugged my TimBuk2 to and from work everyday as well as all over airports. I think that at the time I bought my TimBuk2, Osprey didn't have a bag with a padded laptop sleeve for a 17" laptop, otherwise I epidemic bought a slightly different Osprey.

  Also ask over at r/onebag You'll get a lot of comments here for Osprey, (which i also can recommend firsthand) But also you'll get suggestions for Tom Bihn, Mystery Ranch, TimBuk2 brands. Tom Bihn probably outta budget, but the other 3 brands are all very well recommended in BIFL.

  [BIFL Request] Cross-body pouch/clutch minimalist bag

  I had the same issue. What I really wanted was a flexible system with some kind of small organizer with I could either use on its own or chuck into a larger bag. The thing is I want a lot of secure pockets/compartments to keep essentials organized and separate, but also immediately accessible. I never did find exactly the right thing and ended up with a Timbuk2 Classic Messenger in XS size. It's perfect on its own, but is still too bulky to throw inside another bag, except maybe a large bike pannier. EDIT--I did consider the Tom Bihn Side Effect, but it a bit too small to fit my tablet and I found the Timbuk2 on sale.
