  I suggest looking at altra fwd via and topo atmos. Hoka is just not a wide toe box.

  Topos and Altra have some of the widest toe boxes out there. In my experience they last as long as any other running shoe, typically 300ish miles.

  Bombas Socks have really let me down. Any recommendations welcome!

  This isn’t answering your question, but hear me out. The fact that your socks are wearing out in that central area indicates to me that your toes are being squished into the shoes that you’re wearing and you’re putting an inordinate amount of pressure on that one spot when you walk. This problem is common, but unhealthy nonetheless. If I were you, I’d look into brands with anatomically shaped toe boxes. Altra and Topo are a good place to start, but I really like Barebarics and Wyde.

  Looking for shoes for EVERYDAY wear.

  Nicer running shoes are probably the vibes, you’ll see Hokas/Altra recommended here (I like topo as well). Most running shoes like that aren’t really a BIFL product though, and sometimes you’ll see brands in this space market how many miles they expect the shoe to last from running. I suspect these recs are often are astroturfing with the they’ve risen to prominence here recently — the real tip to get these kind of shoes to last is to buy 2 pairs and alternate them, letting the shoe rest for a day will let them last longer than if you bought a pair, wore it to the ground and then bought a new pair.  You may find success with Birkenstock style shoes lasting a while as well, but they’ll also need resoled eventually

  I would have him try on a bunch at rei. Hoka Clifton works for me but doesn’t work for my sister or mom. My mom likes oofos and my sister likes topos

  Wide sneakers suggestions

  I second Altra and Topo. They have a true wide toe box, not just a wider footbed with squished toes. I also would recommend many minimalist style brands, but it sounds like you are looking for more cushion. Lems is a brand that might be a compromise — worth checking out, anyway.

  My podiatrist said Hokas are too narrow. I’ve had 4 pairs of Hokas and switched to Topos, which are perfect.

  A new or lesser known brand you're trying, hoping it becomes BIFL-ish

  Topo. We’ve been buying their bags since they had a tiny little shop here in Denver. Im a little upset that they are so well made because they never get worn down enough to have it as an excuse to buy another.
