  Self Propelled Electric Snow Blower for small to large qty of snow

  Same considerations couple years ago, done with heavy duty shovelling, occasional big snowfall in Toronto area. Maybe the battery driven units are better nowadays but have been pleased with my Toro 721 model. Gas is the way to go when it’s heavy and deep. Single stage is more than enough for me. Still takes a little effort but I’m not killing my back etc. Should last forever with simple maintenance…

  At that price and size I'd recommend gas sadly, the "buy it for life" recommendation would be ariens s18 or equivalent toro single stage. To keep the electric runs running you'd need a second set of batteries and to swap that out making the cost peak past 1k.

  Toros are awesome. I liked all 3 of the Toros we had growing up, but got a Honda for some reason. Not sure how Honda got a mower so wrong but they did. But truthfully, I am using what I thought was a cheapie 80v Greenworks that’s been going strong for 5+ years now.

  I just sold my almost 20yr old one- (I had a crack in the decoy the side discharge and it was flexing funny. if I knew how to weld I would have fixed it)- always started on the first pull even after the winter. I did use premium fuel in it and ran the tank dry at the end of every season as well.

  Toro’s are well built. Have an aluminum tub myself that just doesn’t rust. Regular oil changes and sea foam or equivalent in the gas every now and then takes great care of the maintenance

  Honda, toro, Briggs, any of them a few years old will last decades. I have a Honda and a toro from 1990 that still run like a top. For maintenance the biggest Game changers for me- Make sure you are using ethanol free gas and run until dry when storing for winter. Occasional sea foam additive

  After owning a commercial toro (lightly used from a golf course) for over a decade, I switched to an electric Greenworks 80v three years ago and will never look back. Not considering electric is a bad move IMHO.

  Personally I would say Toro Super Recycler with Personal Pace. A coworker recommended Toro after he bought a Honda self propelled, because he regretted not buying the Toro. The Personal Pace system is a game changer. 23 years later I still use mine every week and it fires right up after a single pull.

  Why don't you want self propelled, it saves so much effort/work.  If money isn't an object go with a commerical Toro, if money is a consideration the Toro super recycler from a proper mower retailer (you won't find the good ones at the box stores)

  Most small engine power equipment would fit on this list, Toro and Briggs have significant dealer and part support, and a huge swath of cheaper third party parts. Same for MTD machines. Stihl, Echo, Husqvarna all could fit in this list as well. There are a million brands of generators and other equipment that all use Honda-compatible engines and parts

  What’s one item you bought that way outperformed its price?

  I have a 2009 Toro mower that I found on the side of the road with no spark plug or air filter a couple years ago. I put in a new plug, carburetor, air filter, and blade and it's been working fine ever since. I leave it outside uncovered and it still fires up every time. I'll be asking for an electric mower on my wedding registry for the storage and environmental benefits, but in terms of durability and price, it's hard to beat a stupid simple gas mower

  You should start with the biggest metric of a lawnmower which has zero to do with the Brand Name of the mower you buy: Engine Torque. No one in the history of man has ever decried their mower has too much power. So you should seek out the highest torque engine in a mower you can find. But the ad or the big sticker on mowers has a HP rating? That's for the ignorant consumer, don't look at it. But the ad or the big sticker on mowers has a cc sizing? That's for the ignorant consumer, don't look at it. You find the torque rating of the engine by reading deep into the product listing or visiting the engine maker's website. The torque kings are the Kohler 200cc engines with the Kohler RRH625 having 10.4 ft/lbs of torque. That is based on my prior research and maybe there's a new king, but do your research.   the key component is the carborator, specifically whether it's made of plastic. Plastic carborators inevitably break and fall apart. Look for a metal one. Honda and Toro are great brands, just make sure the carb is metal.

  Best Electric Weed Eater?

  I’m very happy with my Toro 60v trimmer. It’s powerful enough that I use it to clear trails through the woods for hunting, particularly after I added a more aggressive line. It’s a bit more powerful than the Ego I tried, but I know that Ego has a few models.

  Basic Gas Mower 5-6HP?

  2k will be plenty for a good residential toro (go to a landscape supply place, not the box store.) Get the super recycler with the aluminum deck, you'll get the smart stow, self propel (I know you said you didn't need it - I highly recommend makes it much less work), and electric start if you want it.

  20 Year is, still mowing the lawn

  Our Toro that old still runs, but the latches that set the level don't hold anymore. In theory, we could have found replacement parts, but at that point the cost per year was down below $10. Eventually, we'll put it on the curb for someone else to tinker with.

  Looking for advice on lawnmowers

  Find your local "tractor store". John Deere, Toro, Jimmy's Lawn Supply who is a dealer for three brands. Visit one, visit them all. Get a commercial unit that they recommend. Open your mind that they may have a used unit and that's OK. I have 2 acres of lawn and use a commercial JD 60" and back yard takes 2 hours and front takes 1.5 hours and I alternate front/back each weekend. I got the JD used with 200 hours on the clock for $3000 but new it featured a low 5 digit pricetag. Not trying to be an active asshole, but you need a commercial unit for the size. Many a person started mowing 2 acres with a Home Depot special then got a "prosumer" model then finally got off the wallet for a commercial unit. The big difference is time as I could mow my back acre is probably 30 minutes going full tilt but some Home Depot jank would probably take 4 hours. And my JD gives zero fucks regarding tall and/or wet grass as bogging is NOT a thing with a commercial mower.

Even paying the upper end of market value for the used market, you still get a much nicer product than what the same money would buy new, and you get to help keep more unnecessary stuff from being produced Its a bit intimidating to start buying expensive stuff online, but once you get a feel for how sellers in a particular niche tend to advertise and document things, you can get a very good idea of how the things will function.

  Snowblower - for hills

  You should really include the budget you're working with. Everyone's first suggestion is going to be Honda, but that reputation comes with a BIG price tag. Snowblowers come in a lot of variations, I'd recommend getting most anything name brand with tracks (skip the home depot brands) and maintain it well, store it inside and clear off as much snow as you can every time you put it away. My city averages 131 inches per year. I just inherited my dad's ~2009 toro when he got a Honda on tracks, and it still works great. He just wanted tracks. My neighbour has a 2008 year old arien(?), the arien works, but it doesn't throw snow 50 feet like the toro or Honda. Realistically, 15 years here is probably a lifetime of snow in DC. Really, the best thing I can suggest is checking in the r/Newfoundland or r/StJohnsNL subreddits. St. John's is full of hills and is regularly listed in the top 10 snowiest cities. If you include the amount of snow you get you might get some lighter duty suggestions.

  None. But the top 3 are Ariens, Honda, and Toro. Ariens can probably claim the longest life, units from the 60s still in use, Honda would be next with units from the 80s, followed by Toro with 90s. Toro's main problem is that they always seem to try and reinvent the augers.

  15 year old Toro 824 still going strong. Hand grip steering is great option. Saves humping the machine around every time you get to the end of the driveway. Starts up year after year. Just drain fuel completely before storing away.

  BIFL Request: Snow Blowers, does electric hold up?

  My recommendation is to really look at historical snow falls for the area. I moved to Michigan and basically did what you described and regretted it because in 6 years we didn't get anything more than about 8" in one go and 3-4inches most of the time. So I had this massive snow blower that could handle 12" or a bit more no problem, but only doing 3" at a time. My dad got a toro that was over 100lbs lighter than mine and never had it bog down, never had issues. My brother got an electric that also worked great.

  There are Ariens from the 60s still in use, a bit less for Honda and Toro. I can not answer the battery units. None have been around longer than 10 years. It's more dependant on where you live, the type of snow, and how much.

  I have had a Ryobi 40v 21in( single stage ) for the past three winters. It handles the Midwest winter just fine. I did have to replace a battery that wouldn't hold a charge. oem batteries are still available. From and bifl standpoint. Batteries could get sketchy should you need to go third party, if/when Ryobi redesigns them. There are plenty of Ryobi units on eBay, so parts are findable. I also found a corded toro 16in on marketplace, and that is my backup and potentially a more bifl option.
