After living in Japan for a bit one of my best friends has said that he always feels like a barbarian when he uses a toilet without a bidet, and I always judged him a bit thinking they can't be that good. Then my wife and I just spent 3 weeks in Japan and using Toto Washlets or equivalents everywhere we completely agree with him. We were already going to hire an electrician to do some work around our house, and adding some outlets to the bathrooms for bidets has been added to the list.

Same here! I’ve had my Toto bidet for about two years now, and it’s still going strong. I was a bit nervous about installing it at first, but following some YouTube tutorials helped a ton, it wasn’t nearly as hard as I thought it would be. Daily use has been a game-changer and I honestly can’t imagine going back.

I also have had one about the same amount of time. My daughter, when she was younger, once pushed down the soft automatic close seat because she was impatient and she broke the seat where the gear attaches. Toto’s service was excellent. I sent it in, they serviced the entire seat, motor, etc., and sent it back for a nominal fee. Very much in the spirit of BIFL.

Bidet setup has been commonplace in every household in Japan long before North America caught up. Toto has the longest track record, and it can be found for a great price at Costco. I have the higher end versions of Brondell. It’s still going after 6 years, besides the seat has yellowed from the heating function. When it needs to be replaced, I’ll get a Toto since it is more and more prevalent for companies to use the cheapest parts possible (and usually most unethical production source). The MSRP prices generally end up not making much of a difference in the long run in savings.

Cheapest? Any spray nozzle and hose with a T-coupling from any hardware store for probably <$25. I recommend getting a stainless steel unit for cleaning purposes, but plastic will work fine. J I have a Tushy 2.0 in one bathroom and just ordered another. Honestly, they're a little overpriced, but they work great, are incredibly simple, and easy to clean and clean around. (2.0 is \~$90, 3.0 is $120 which is a LOT for what it does). Japanese Toto's for the expensive version (>$300) which are self-cleaning, but if you're spending that much, make sure to get the ones with the carbon air filters -- they REALLY cut down on unpleasant aromas.

You will see a lot of comments on here that the basic, sub $100 ones work just fine. And they do! *However*..... there is something to be said for the higher end models, as well. I have a Toto (can't remember the model) that is fully customizable per user - Water temperature, pressure, position. And also has a dryer feature and a charcoal filter to cut down on the stink. It is also self cleaning, and removes from the toilet with one touch of a button for easy cleaning of the toilet and the underside of the bidet. My wife and I find that we have very different preferences so the customizability is incredibly helpful for us. And, quite frankly, our asses deserve it.

Since we're in the BI4L area, just a thought about bidets, especially here in the UK where we have poor selection of the standard recommendation (Toto). There are now a lot of toilet seats that you can buy off places like Amazon. I highly recommend going: (i) a separate seat bidet, rather than a toilet specifically designed with a bidet; (ii) an electric plugin connection (can be hard without destroying your tiles, but still). When we did our first bathroom, I went with the mid-tier option you can bet in the UK (still several thousand); which had the all-in-one toilet. I regret this now because basically the seat is proprietary and was made of cheap plastic. Go instead with any of the cheaper units (around £200 off Amazon) that you can can put on any standard toilet. It's not BI4L but it's fully compatable to being swapped out in the future with the cistern. Finally, the £200 unit I bought feels pretty much as good as the Toto ones I've used.

As others have mentioned, a bidet. But specifically, a Toto Washlet. I think I spent around $400 on it, and it’s absolutely amazing. I cannot go back. I’ve heard people mention that it is the Ferrari of toilet seats, and although my experience with bidets is limited solely to the Washlet, I would have to agree!
