  I never thought they were buy it for life----but in the old days, speakers, microphones, wired headphones of good quality lasted and lasted now---ear buds, wireless headphones--not going to last long. Refrigerators Washer machines One thing that did improve--gas cars in the past 30 years got better than predecssors (honda toyota subaru etc.

  Toyota fanboy here. 300k miles on my 5th gen 4Runner, 215K on my LX470, and I had over 200k on my Tacoma before I wrecked it. Beyond maintenance, brakes and belts, and the occasional alternator they’ve all been rock solid. I’ve heard lately they’ve been having some issues, but the older generations that I’ve bought I have been pretty much perfect.

  For me, it’s been Origin USA for my clothes & boots. Glock for pistols, kershaw (only the USA made ones) for pocket knife’s, wusthof for kitchen knife’s, Toyota for cars/trucks, saddleback leather for wallet/belt/briefcase/totes. Side note, Saddleback just started making boots but they are more than double the price of my tried & true OriginUSA boots. I still love my iron rangers from red wing as well so they’re a great buy.

  Toyota Prius. Put the seats down and you can supply a job site. I used one for work and fit like 15 tools bags in rigging and chain hoists. Great gas mileage. Plenty o room. Even seen people use them for campers.

  110k per year is insane. 423 miles a day based on 260 workdays a year, 7 hours of driving at 60mph. I have an 07 Toyota with 750k. Was doing good until covid hit, now it sits most of the time. If i had kept it up, should of hit 1mm sometime in 24.

  As With all cars they need maintenance. Engine mounts, suspension, gaskets and seals will even tally go bad and leak. It’s really toyotas engines that are really good and reliable.

  I totally agree! I'm 20 years older than you and just bought my third car. My first was an old school Volvo 240. Then a late 90s Camry V6 that lasted 28 years, and this month I bought a second Camry V6. I drive less than most so I've never seen 300K. Both the 200K+ Volvo and Camry were sold to people happy to find them

  If you want reliability, Honda CRV and Toyota RAV4 are the go to choices. You could also look at Lexus and Mazda. I tried the Honda and Toyota and ended up with a 2021 CRV (partly because I’m 6’4” and found it a much more comfortable size for me).

  I’m on my 4th timing belt, the most important thing. I do it every 100k miles. I just did this one a little early. I’ve also done two suspensions. Change the oil regularly and keep all the fluids topped up. Easy peasy. My brake booster needed to be changed like 5k miles ago. I can’t believe how long the parts last in these things.

  RAV4 probably. The Escape was discontinued, last one was built last week. Bit of a shame since the hybrid Escape was far and away the best Escape. Mazda designed the engine and the eCVT was nearly identical to the Toyota design. Gas Escapes are garbage. I own a hybrid RAV4 and Escape. The Escape hybrid was nearly $10k less vs a RAV4 hybrid with similar mileage and specs. Fords are Fords, but a lot of shit needs to break before it becomes a bad decision.

  Probably the 1.3 I'm guessing? They wouldn't pull the skin off a sausage. I had a 1992 1.6 hatch as one of my first cars and that was a revy little thing for what it was. I briefly owned a GTIR Pulsar, and god, what a fun car.

  Rav4 FTW. 50 mpg is my record, 40+ was typical. Downside: 4x8 plywood is just a little too wide, no real towing capacity, made of tin foil so one deer collision can total you.

  I’ve only ever seen this from Volvo and Toyota. I knew someone who operated a yard and Volvo was very interested in one of their cars that managed to survive 750,000 miles in Northern Wisconsin. I know Toyota used to sporadically reach out to some local municipalities near me every now and again to see if they’d like to trade in one of their high mileage utility trucks so they could tear it down for research.

  Yeah, there's a pretty big Toyota fan community for the Tundra and the Tacoma. I have a Tacoma. 2021. I totally understand why people love Toyota now. She's rock solid. I mean, I love this truck. She's been with me through so much, and I honestly feel like she's a member of my family. The fact that she can last to a million miles is really comforting. Like if you get a Dodge Ram, you know, they're gonna top out at 200k.

  I wrapped a 1972 Toyota truck over the 1,000,000 kilometer mark. I bought it off a travelling salesmen that toured North America. He was the original owner. I rebuilt the engine and had to do a lot of sheet metal work to the body due to it rotting out but everything was original. Sold it for $400 to a teen and seen it driving around the same town 8 years later. Amazing truck, that just couldn't be killed.

  I’m 43 and only have had 3 cars in my life only Corollas and Camry. I get a new one around 250k miles. They are great reliable cars that run well with basic maintenance. Only wear and tear items have I ever replaced with the exception of an alternateer on one of my corollas at around 200k miles. As long as I can keep going to 250k I will keep buying them.

  Toyota Venza longevity?

  I have the 2010 Venza limited . I absolutely love this vehicle. I am restoring it. I'm looking for a front seat that has the dvd / play station in the head rest. All works , just the leather is wearing. My vehicle must have been the swag of this model in 2010. It has all the bells and whistles...I paid 8 k for it in 2017 with 70,000 miles.

  What brands/products do you AVOID because of their poor longevity?

  I disagree, I think generally modern cars are more reliable than they were decades ago. You could argue they peaked 10 years ago and there’s been some decline in reliability from some brands, but a modern Toyota or Honda can still outlast almost anything from decades past. Domestic brands have certainly faltered in recent years, but the reliable cars they made in the 80’s, 90’s, and 2000’s were always the exceptions and likely examples of survivorship bias. My family is very Lexus/Toyota loyal and I’ve seen several of our cars cross 250,000-300,000 miles with almost exclusively basic routine maintenance.

  I had one of the early Toyotas from the 1980s. In 30 years that car was in the shop for a total of 6 days. I changed the oil and spark plugs religiously, adjusted the valves every two years. The first brake job, I bought a lifetime warranty on the brakes, requiring Midas to replace the pads for the life of the car. Best $69 I ever spent.

  Not exactly BIFL but a fantastic purchase. I bought a Toyota Corolla when I was low on cash. For $1200 with 400 000 km on the dial. I said I'd be happy if it lasted me 18 months. I sold it 6 years later (last year) for $1100 with $450 000. In that time aside from fuel and registration I estimate that I spent less than $400 per year in maintenance.

  Yes very true, platform matters. I wouldnt be caught in a Hyundai honestly, those arent it in terms of longterm quality. Im driving a 2018 camry that will be good for another +200k miles. Its at 130k now and have had no problems whatsoever.

  We got a steal on a low mileage 2005 Camry ten years ago and it’s still just chugging away. It was supposed to be a hold over until we paid off our other car’s loan but that time came and went and the thing just works even if it is a little battered and embarrassing to drive. It’s a great station car. Took a good hit one night in the parking lot too so I’m happy it was that hunk of junk and not our nicer car.

  I sold my Toyota Corolla 1991 back in 2017. Over 300,000 miles and probably still on the road. Currently in a 2007 Lexus RX that just hit 210,000 miles also still going strong.

  I bought a 2005 Toyota Corolla off a friend 12 yrs ago for 2K, drove it for 5yrs and then my daughter inherited it. Zippy’s got like 205K miles on her. Cheap AF to insure, easy to work on, my daughter says she wants to get another 200K miles out of her.

  A used Toyota corolla. Got it with 29,000 miles on it. Drove it for 15 years, passed it on to my daughter who drove it for a few more years. Gifted it to someone who continued to drive it. Don't know for how long. The only thing it needed from me or my daughter was oil changes and tires. I did get the belts all changed at around 100,000 as well. Best investment I ever made. I had previously owned a Ford and a Chevy and had no idea that a car could be so reliable.

  That’s a good point, people love to complain when things go downhill but don’t say much when they improve. I’d say Apple’s laptops have actually gotten better again lately. Way better battery life, cooler design, the M-series chips are wild. LEGO too! The sets now are insanely detailed compared to what we had as kids. Even cars like Toyota and Hyundai have really stepped up their game over the years

  Toyota Venza longevity?

  I'm still driving my 2010 Venza as well. I'm at 235k miles, and Toyota estimates a life expectancy of 250k. I suspect it could go to 300k or beyond. It still looks good (I get compliments and shocked expressions when I reveal her age), and the ride is still quiet and smooth. My complaints are minimal: the famous ill-fitting interior trim, above-average brake wear (it's a heavy car), and above-average costs for minor things like tires and headlight replacements. Gas mileage is meh. I'm looking for my next car now. I'd like something slightly zippier and more fuel efficient, but I will miss the quiet comfortable ride of my trusty Venza.

  See i was team kettle- until I was introduced to a hot water pot. The water stays at a chosen warm/hot water temp for immediate use. I use this several times a day. To make coffee, tea, in cooking. Its my favorite kitchen tool. I can not go back to anything less its spoiled me so with convenience. And I completely concur about the Toyota. When I was young I balked at Toyota. Now that im mature... I know i dont want anything less.

  The Camry Hybrid just hit 20 years in production and might be a better indicator of BIFL potential. Scanning forums, the first gen seemed to be the shakiest, and something similar might happen with the Corolla I'd look at a current gen used Camry Hybrid because of the larger sample size vs expecting the first gen of any car to be BIFL.

  A Toyota is your best bet. If you want a hybrid, a Toyota hybrid is your best bet. You still see 2000’s Priuses all over the place.  Now, Why the heck is he driving 4 hours a day? That’s insane. For a $50k salary? Killing quality of life but also spending a serious portion of a $50k salary on driving. I can’t imagine a scenario where there isn’t a better job closer to home. I’d rather make $30k and be walking distance to work. Holy crap

  I don't know about the US but in the UK toyota and lexus do a 10 year warranty. So you can buy a 5 year old car that's already depreciated hard and still drive it risk free for another 5 years before repairs become your problem. It's the obvious move for anyone tight on cash.

  Doesn't really count as it's just a matter of time, but I have a fairly pristine 2005 Toyota 4Runner with the v8 engine (2UZFE) that is bulletproof. Surface rust on the frame but none on the body. 250k kms and the thing just keeps going. Will be spending $2500 soon to have the frame dry ice blasted and rust-proofed. These 4Runners are rare as theyre the only generation (4th gen) to come with the v8 landcruiser engine. Toyota quickly realized that coming out with a cheap v8 model negatively affected their Landcruiser and Lexus sales so they pulled that cord pretty quickly and never offered a v8 4Runner option since 2009.

  2011 Toyota Camry hybrid still going strong

  I'm late to this post but I'm at 318,844 miles this morning and same...just the regular starting battery has been my biggest repair. She's just starting to nickel and dime but things that I should have done anyway, like new spark plugs and coils (first time replacing these). So last night I had a sudden warning chime after just pulling on the freeway. I SWEAR there was a message ON THE DASH that said "water temp to hot (or high?)" but I can't find anywhere that says the 2011 Hybrid actually has words that pop up. It only shows the idiot lights which I know, but that message really did show up. Anyone else ever see that?

  Toyota, Lexus, Honda, and Acura are consistently the most reliable cars. If you take care of them they can last 30+ years. If you have the means, buy outright. Another trick is to look for salvage titles and find out why they were salvaged. You can nock 20-30% off the price for a minor fender bender. Run from anything with water damage (flood salvage). Tips: 0) Figure out what car you want and just google for common issues. 1) Ask for a maintenance history of the car. And see if those issues were serviced. 2) Run a carfax on the car to check for major crashes/flood damage. 3) Find a reputable repair shop in your area and pay the 100-200 for an inspection. It will normally pay for it's self. 4) Check the tires to make sure they don't need to be replaced.

  We have consistently bought toyotas/Lexus and not been disappointed. They are extremely reliable cars with basic upkeep. I'm currently driving a 2009 Toyota and am just now thinking of replacing it. We bought it used and I have put 80k miles on it and it just now is needing some repairs. If you have a lower budget I highly recommend doing the same. A toyota can easily get you to 200k miles/20 years old, so even if you get it at 100k miles/10 years old, you still get a car with a lot of life left in it. A camry is always a great option unless you have older children and need some more space. We still had a carry when we had young children and it was a great car. If you can pay off a car, then compare APR on the loan with the % you can get on an HYSA. If what you can get back on an HYSA or treasury bond, keeping in mind you pay taxes on the interest, then you should put money in to some form of savings and pay down the loan over time from that. But that's not the case right now, certainly not when looking at a used car loan-interest rates on loans are higher. So your best bet is to pay as much upfront as you can, get that monthly payment as low as you can, and aggressively pay off the car loan, putting as much into paying down the principal as you can. Shop around for a loan--you don't have to go with dealer financing as the dealer usually has worse rates than a credit union. Then, once the loan is paid off, put the money in an HYSA or treasurey bonds and start saving up for the next car.

  I have been driving a 2010 Toyota Camry since 2010 and I highly recommend it! It now has 186,000 miles. It has never broken down, nothing on it has ever just “gone out.” I have only had to do a few repair things here and there for upkeep. I highly recommend it also because it is roomy for long trips and transporting stuff, but it’s not big and bulky to drive. It has been a great investment! I plan to get a newer model next year and pass the 2010 on to my daughter who will be starting to drive.

  My sister has only had Buicks. Loves them. Went to a Buick dealer last year to check out a used Hybrid Highlander. While waiting on the deal I hopped in the Buick SUV. Gorgeous vehicle. Really nice interior. My sales guy had worked 10 yrs for Toyota and then 10 for Buick. He got in the car with me. Told me about the good features. Then lowered his voice and said the Toyota would be the better buy. Said it’s a far superior vehicle. It’s not as fancy, even being the Limited, the Avenir was more packed. The prices were $5k apart, Buick being new was more. Said the ‘23 Hybrid system was bulletproof. They made the deal I wanted. Previous owner wanted the Caddy electric. Nothing wrong with mine. I bought the Highlander. I’ve had it almost a year. I’m loving the HiHy.

  Buick isn't in the same universe as Toyota for either reliability or quality. Our family has had multiple Buicks in the past and the fit and finish is truly garbage. My last Toyota, a Prius, gave me zero problems (except it needed a new starter battery) for 139,000 miles.

  I've had My corolla for 20 years with no problems... and I bought it used from a Hertz lot, one of the best decisions I have ever made. People look askance at buying a rental car but if you are buying a used car, my opinion is that Hertz, or any other rental agency, is going to be more diligent about staying on top of oil changes and other maintenance than many typical individual car owners.

  For 4 cylinders and all-around, the Corolla is going to be hard to beat. GM small block V8s are good, but that limits you to trucks, Camaros and Corvettes. I wouldn't vouch for much else from the GM stable.

  Buick is a part of GM. GM and Buick have been around for a long time but their reliability has never been anything to rave about aside from a few vehicles over the years. Toyota isn’t as reliable as it was in the past but it’s still the kink of reliability with Honda being a really close runner up. When buying any car do more frequent maintenance then what is recommended these days.

  Agreed. I have a 2007 Toyota Yaris, and I’ve not had to replace non-wear parts on this thing, yet. I’ve had to bandaid certain things, like the catalytic converter that I’m sure is going to fall off tomorrow, but it still drives well and runs well. I suck at doing preemptive maintenance on it, too, so it’s all stock from the factory floor, even the timing chain and shock springs.

  2003 here with 210k. Mother in law rear ended someone on march and insurance wanted to total it for the body damage. Everything else is fine. Took the payout, minus salvage and it's still going. I feel terrible that it looks the way it looks but as long as it's mechanically sound, it will be the a to b vehicle for as long as I can keep it.

  1. Tie between my 2006 Toyota Tundra and 1994 Toyota Camry. Both well over 300k miles and run just fine with normal maintenance 2. Darn tough socks, I am on my feet 16+ hours a day in all kinds of environments and they hold up like crazy 3. Le Cruset skillet, I splurged and got the expensive cast iron. When my partner dropped it and it broke in two, the outlet store replaced it zero questions asked 4. Filson medium duffle, again a splurge purchase, but it’s the perfect size for me for a three day weekend trip and it looks sharp 5. Carhartt Sherpa lined jacket, bought it in 2002 while still in the military and it’s gone through every winter since with just a little fraying on the sleeve and some discoloration from staining

  I have lovingly, and with no regrets, dragged a ford station wagon through 20 years. Full inspection and proper maintenance every 6 months. I've replaced things like the ac, the steering column, and various suspension parts. My long time mechanic who is not a body person (and also my genuine friend at this point), has learned a number of body skills on this car. All totally worth it and still cheaper than car payments. Meanwhile, my partner's 15 year old toyota chugs along good as new despite a barbaric level of 'basic' maintenance. I spent so much time just convincing them to do a yearly oil change and buy some decent tires and rims. It makes me so MAD every time I get in it and it drives like a dream. Meanwhile, the ford that I babied like my first born (though it's a model that doesn't even deserve it) has finally jalopped it's last jaloppy breath and I'm out looking at new cars. Buy a Toyota, just don't buy one with a turbo right now. They've worked out a lot of kinks on the hybrids now though. I'm going to go with Honda, because I can't stand toyota seating. It's the only thing they get consistently wrong - and that's not just me.

Brick house on a raised foundation - siding needs replacement and slabs crack 4. 90's Trek aluminum bicycle - no reason to spend $1000s on a new bike when a little thrift store action gets you something lightweight and made out of aerospace-grade bonded aluminum - it will never rust. 5. The cheapest Admiral washer/dryer combo you can get. Mine were $350 apiece, the washer body needs replacing due to rust but it's going strong 15 years later and they still make the same model and have barely raised the price. $400 for 15 years of washing is a no-brainer.

  Depreciation and going 400k do go hand in hand. In fact one represents the other. A car depreciates to represent how much value it has left. A 100k Kia depreciates more and worth less at 200k miles than a Toyota with the same miles and year. If a Toyota is known for going 400k you’re more than likely buying a Toyota at 200k vs a Chevy at 200k cause odds are it doesn’t have much life yet. Depreciation equals perceived remaining value of a car.

  The FJ is more utilitarian, less comfortable to drive. It's quirky as hell with weird things like the half-doors, the 3 windshield wipers, lights on the mirrors, etc. I am from Michigan, where they are sort of rare (everything rusts away thanks to road salt), but I am in Nashville working for the year, and they are everywhere here. It's fun to have in MI because they are so uncommon, especially when you see them in the Upper Peninsula (MI) with a tent on the roof like mine. Not ideal for Nashville because it's SO busy here and it's not the car you want to use for a commuter with horrible traffic. With the Nashville traffic and hilly terrain I get 250-260 miles out of a 19 gallon tank of fuel. On flat, rural MI roads I can get 320 out of the same 19 gal tank. I like them both. The FJ is more fun, but the 4R is more practical/comfortable in my experience. I'm sure this is a disaster to read, but it's 4 AM and I'm getting ready to go to work. Sorry about that!

  That 4.7L in that Tundra is a 'million mile engine.' I like Rams, my dad has a 2009 that he purchased new. It's been good, but it's on the 2nd engine, 2nd trans and 3rd rear diff. He bought it when Dodge was offering their 'max powertrain warranty,' so everything was replaced under warranty. In that instance, it was totally worth the savings not buying a Tundra. Without the warranty though, it could have been an expensive way to save a few dollars up front. Just something interesting to think about. Despite that, the Ram still sits on the driveway (still under warranty)...surrounded by Toyotas.

  Price seems high but they are good cars. I will say you shouldn't expect it to drive like a car, it's shit on the highway and doesn't get good mileage. I've always wanted a 3rd gen 5 speed but never stumbled across the right one. Also my anecdotal experience: I bought a 2015 SR5 in 2018 for $25k out the door. I can't remember how many miles it had but they were high, 80k maybe? Anyways it sat on a dealers lot for a month or two (red flag for them). It also was a dealer that I know sold a lot of new cars, so they hate having used shit sit on the lot. I test drive it one day and didn't go back for two weeks, but kept in light contact with sales. When I went to buy it I showed up 30 minutes before close. They wanted like $28k I think but I had been pretty firm on $25k. So of course when I get there it's my price plus all their financing fees and bullshit. They beat my Credit Union's rate so I told them I go with their financing if they gave me $25k out the door and if they can't do it I'll leave and they can close up and go home. Anyways I put 35k highway miles on it in a year, put 2" lift and bigger tires on, took it off road exactly once because I was working so much. I traded it in on a high powered German luxo barge for exactly what I paid because it didn't actually suit my needs for a vehicle, but rather my wants. I still loved it, and wished I had it back now because I'm not doing that many miles anymore, and I have a lot more time off to go camping/exploring/driving off road. If you look around I bet you can find a decent 5th gen with desirable mods for less

  I bought my 2003 SR5 with 36K miles in 2006. Approx $19K out the door. Drove it for 14 years as a daily driver. They chew up brakes like crazy and had some hardware issues with hood latch. I even got rear ended a couple times but my trailer hitch went 2-0. Sold it for $4500 right before the Pandemic with 175K miles. Upgraded to a Lexus mostly because I wanted newer tech and 4WD. The RWD does save you a couple bucks on gas but not good in the snow. I’d go for it as long as the carfax is clean and maintenance is up to date. Remember, you pay for it up front but 4Runners hold their value so well you might still get $12K out of it with 200K miles.

The only things I see on some of the older ones were head gaskets but those were more early 2000's models. I have been an auto tech for 25 years and id say they're one of the most reliable vehicles you can purchase. And one of the ones that holds their value better than a lot.

  I have a '06 V8, 125,xxx, bought it in 2017 with 60k. Oil, Fluids, and timing belt every 90K and it will run to 300k easily. Find a 2006-2009, particularly the V8. I wouldn't say it's BIFL, but it's as close as it can be for a car IMHO. Fun fact, the first generation of the V8 was certified by the FAA for use in planes.

  Yeah that's about the going rate for those things. I personally don't think the price makes any sense.  The 4runners are very good vehicles, but they have their issues like anything. You should really test drive one first because they are not for everyone- they don't ride particularly well, they handle ponderously, they get horrible fuel mileage... They don't have particularly roomy or comfortable interiors considering how large the vehicle is.  If they are maintained properly, they will last for a very long time. It's they are neglected, they will usually still last for a reasonably long time, which is why people buy them.

  Yes, more or less. Definitely drive for 20+ years if you do it right. I have a 2007 4Runner V8 at ~300,000 miles and a 2009 Land Cruiser at 160,000 that are still killing it and look new. Take care of them, and they’ll take care of you. I should also note that those are the only two models of Toyota made at their Lexus factory in japan, so they hit in a higher weight class, LC in general.

  These are my 2¢ as someone who has driven Toyota cars and trucks most of my adult life. I currently daily drive a 2002 Tacoma with ~210k miles on it. This is all mostly related to pre 2022~ish Toyota products Toyota is indeed known for reliability, but be aware that this comes with trade-offs in other fields. Firstly like you see here they are expensive relative to other similarly aged cars. Secondly, repairs/maintenance can be costly because toyota OEM parts are expensive as hell because they tend to be well engineered and overbuilt. While they are known for their reliability, they are not perfect so repair cost is definitely something to keep in mind. At 100k you are definitely outside the manufacturer warranties so you will probably be paying for any repairs out of pocket. Also Toyota tends to be behind other car companies when it comes to extra features you get for the money you pay (if that’s something that you care about, I personally dislike having a bunch of extra tech/screens in my cab). As for the pros of Toyota. If you stay on top of your maintenance and don’t beat the hell out of it, you will most likely have pretty hassle-free ownership experience. While repairs can be expensive, Toyotas in my experience are relatively easy to work on if you are mechanically inclined. 4Runners are pretty popular amongst people who want to do their own mechanic work, so there is a wealth of information available as to how to just about anything on them. Toyotas offerings lean more toward being utilitarian than many other brands who include more conveniences and comforts for the same price points

  Love my 2007 4runner - got it fourth hand from a family member for free, it’s approaching 300k miles and still runs like a charm. I just drove it around 2000 miles through the Rockies and had no problems whatsoever! Decent mileage too, I get on average 400-430 in a full tank, mostly driving long highways or mountain roads without a ton of stop and start. It’s about the same as what I used to get in my Subaru, and almost double what my friend was getting in his CRV.  I plan to run this car into the ground, and every time I take it in the mechanics always remark on how well it’s holding up. $25k seems pretty steep for a used car, but if you find a similar model with a more reasonable price and are willing to keep up maintenance then that car will be with you for a long time.

  Fwiw, I daily a 1997 Taco that I've had since 120k. It has 220k on it now. My biggest investment has been new shocks. I have spent maybe 5k total on it over 20 years. My dad's 2004 F250 has had probably 40k worth of work done and it still creaks and groans and I suspect it'll need a new tranny if we try to sell it with 180k on it. There's a reason why Toyotas typically require a larger upfront fee.

  I have an ‘06 4Runner V8 with just over 300k that still runs like a champ. My biggest gripe (at least for this model year) is the secondary air injection system (SAIS) is notorious for sucking up water and breaking. When this happens, it disables the TCS which is annoying. What’s worse is that it’s located behind the engine so it’s a ~$1700 repair. Luckily, there is a mod that can disable it. I believe Toyota has since relocated the SAIS intake so that it doesn’t suck in water anymore.

  My 03 4runner has about 300k on it now.   Before I owned it the previous owner didn't do the timing belt, due at 120k but it snapped around 200k and had to get a good deal of engine work done.  I bought it off the mechanic who did the work and it's been excellent through my abuse since then.   A/C compressor went out around 270k, but otherwise nothing beside routine wear and tear maintenance.  Gets awful fuel economy though, but i work from home so it mostly gets driven when I'm towing the boat or going camping.  If you live in rust prone areas you need to really stay up on protecting the frame with fluid film and such or it will rust away from the inside.

  My 99 4Runner was the most reliable vehicle I ever had. The thing was an absolute tank. I took care of the maintenance but I was not gentle to it and never had a single problem. On those you did have to keep up with the timing belt but the newer ones like that one have chains so no worries there. I’d buy it for that in a heartbeat knowing I’d get another 200 plus out of it.

  I fret when thinking about the day I will have to replace my 1999 Toyota 4Runner. I bought it 14-ish years ago for $10k cash and have had to do only a few 'major' fixes to it. It's really just about maintaining it. I'm at 349, 800 miles now! It has a few dents but still runs like a champ!

  I have a 97’ with 375k (2.7l grocery getter). I got it for $750 in 2012. I do most of the routine maintenance myself since these cars are so easy to work on. For me, parts are also very easy to find even with a 97. I can’t recommend a Toyota enough especially an older 4Runner.

  I’d say keep looking and checkout the 4runner sub for research. The price seems high for an almost 10 year old 4Runner that’s a SR5 (base) trim. See if you can get a cheaper deal from a private seller. I don’t know if it’s BIFL (*no car or truck really is unless you absolutely baby it*) it’s a damn reliable SUV. Mine is about 15 years old and it’s been a tank. Just regular maintenance and wheels. My big complaint is that gas mileage does suck though. I average about 15-18 mpg in mixed driving.

  I have one we bought in 1986. It’s an Amana Radarange. Still works like new. When we had the kitchen redone, I made them put in a cabinet big enough to hold it. I also drive a 2006 Toyota 4Runner that I bought new. Outside of it is beaten up, but the inside looks like new. I’ll probably be driving it until I’m too old to drive.

  A few things: 2006 Toyota Corolla— bought in 2012 for $7k, and it’s still going strong today. IKEA ektorp couches— bought them in 2016/2017 because the covers are removable and washable. They’ve survived 4 kids and a German shepherd (who used to play in the mud and then come in and jump on them)… probably washed the covers at least once a month, sometimes even multiple days in a row due to kids/dog, and they still look great today! We bought an extra set of covers just in case, but we’ve still never had reason to open them. Uppababy Vista stroller— bought in 2018, and have used (and abused) it ever since. It’s survived 4 kids, often having 3 in it at the same time. Fun fact: the basket underneath is super strong, and can hold a 2 year old and 4 year old together, while having an infant in the bassinet above. We’ve used it as a portable bassinet in the house, daily walks on sidewalks, at parks, over mulch, gravel paths, 12 hour days at Disney, on cruise ships, etc. It’s probably the best baby purchase we ever made. I don’t think there’s been a single day in the past 6 years that it hasn’t been used.

Bought new and still the daily driver. 1984 Toyota truck my dad bought new and passed down to me in 1996. Other than regular scheduled maintenance, it has only had a water pump, clutch, and clutch master cyl replaced. All original, down to the 41 year old power steering fluid. 1975 Maytag washer and dryer pulled out of the scrapyard for free almost 20 years ago. Still kicking. Unless you can do all your own maintenance no car is BIFL as you'll eventually get a repair bill that makes ownership untenable. My advice if you are getting an apartment is to go with a Corolla or if you can find one, a Gen 3 Prius with under 100K miles.

  What gen? My nephew has a 5g that he just abuses and it has been great other than he snapped a leaf and keeps kissing trees and has around 100k miles iirc. The even older ones ran forever. I actually just picked up a 2020 bc my nephew’s truck has done so well. The work ones are all the new 6g and we haven’t had them long enough to know if they will be reliable. The older pre-Atkinson motor Tacos were near indestructible for what we do, but we don’t have snow and I’ve heard they melt in the snow.

  As a Canadian, I am doing whatever I can to talk up decoupling from the US auto industry. I don't understand why we can't have JDM vehicles here. We aren't big enough to make our own car models, but other countries could ship us anything 75% built or whatever and we could complete them here. For an example: Japan could send us the Alphard. You don't need to sell 100,000 Alphards for it to be a success, you just need to sell 100,000 Toyotas. Open up the model range. It uses the same hybrid drivetrain as every other Toyota that I know of. Just send us Toyotas without the drivetrain, let us make the drivetrains here, and we can put them in ourselves.

  Gotta love those old reliable Toyotas. I’ve got a 2000 4runner at 261,000 miles currently. I assume you have the 3.4 V6 engine also. My advice for you: replace your lower ball joints with Toyota OEM asap if you don’t know the history of them. Recommend replace every 100k miles WITH TOYOTA OEM LBJs as preventative maintenance. When they fail, your wheel falls off while you are driving and breaks suspension parts and body panels and may cause you to crash. If you have an auto transmission, Replace your radiator every 100k miles with Toyota OEM to prevent pink milkshake (which most likely causes death of transmission). Especially change it asap if it is brown instead of black. If you live where they salt roads, protect your frame from rust by undercoating it with wool wax of Surface Shield. I have more tips. Good luck.

  With tariffs driving up the cost of new vehicles, the price of used is skyrocketing with them. $5k won't get you much, sadly. Without knowing your needs, I'd stick to brands known for their longevity, durability, and ease of maintenance (e.g. Toyota, Honda, Subaru, etc.).

  Your biggest problem in Europe is the local emissions regulations for instance in London you need to have at least a Euro 4 compliant vehicle, diesels need to be much more strict Euro 6 standard at least. And this is only going to be ratcheted further. Toyota Land Cruiser Toyota Hilux, Lexus LX and GX, Lexus LS. Rav 4 hybrid and the Lexus NX hybrid - my main worry would be the CVH transmission

  Your next step should be stepping in a dealership and sitting in a few of them. There's also a taller one called a cross or something. The corolla isn't far from it in size. They are definitely on the less engaging side of driving, but their hybrid models can't be beat around towns, and they get you in a state of zen when driving.

  Buy it and put on the bypass oil filter, it will do you very well. Price wise there is nothing wrong with that. And there is nothing to really go wrong on them like the new generation with a lot of extra parts. However if you are a carpenter I would also look at a 2007 I think it is Chevy/GMC Diesel for similar price if I had to tow a work trailer a lot.

  I think it is still the case. I have literally never owned a new car, bought 10-15 yr old ones with 125k miles. Get a Toyota or Honda or Acura or a Mazda. Something with a reliable engine. I mean I have bought a truck for $1500 bucks and 200k miles that went another 80k miles with only another $1500 put into it. That's a 03 f150. You will always have to do maintenance. It's worth it to buy a Prius that's even got a dead hybrid battery and paying 2k to replace because it's cheaper than a 30k Prius. Depreciation is so high on a new car purchase that you might as well buy two used cars and just assume one will die.

  A 5.7 tundra is the most reliable 1/2-ton truck in that era. However there’s a couple things you should watch out for: These are still plagued by frames rotting, if you don’t live in a rust state no problem but otherwise look carefully and would recommend getting it coated with something like fluid film in the future. The transmissions aren’t weak per say, but if you’re doing significant amount of towing with with heavy loads you can have issues eventually. The next down 2020 ish truck on the reliability scale I’d say is the f150 with a 5.0, which would be getting you more truck and features for less money. Just wouldn’t be quite at the same level of reliability but it’s miles ahead of what Chevy, dodge, nissan were up to.

I think honda and mazda are also pretty high up there... Any car can last a long time though, as long as you do the proper maintenance on time... Unless it's a kia/hyundai... those things are made of paper machet. Or a VW product... those are made so complicated that proper maintenance is nigh impossible...   I have had excellent luck with Toyotas. I had a 2000 Land Cruiser that we put 355,000 miles on and was still in great shape when I sold it. We had a 2009 Prius that we put north of 250,000 miles on. Again it was still in great shape when we sold it. I currently have a 2017 LX 570 that has 120,000 miles on it. It is doing excellent. The cost of ownership of an LX is way less than the cost of ownership on my previous Volvo XC90 or MB GLK 350.

  Got an ‘05 Camry and ‘14 Outback. Both have all of the manual controls I want. I don’t want a “smart” car. The only modern update I’d want is CarPlay just because I want the bigger map. Anything else on that screen can gtfo. I want a dumb car that I don’t think about operating while driving. I took a Uber ride in a Tesla once and it was absolutely terrifying how often the driver was interfacing with the tablet.

  No car is BIFL when not maintained. The majority of cars, if driven safely and carefully, serviced regularly (once per year for low mileage cars, 2x per year for high mileage cars) by a reliable mechanic, and cleaned regularly and carefully (including engine bay), will last significantly longer than 10 years. There are however some brands that will last longer than others even if the above is done. Brands I would personally be happy to own long term: Honda, Toyota, Ford (if they have a wet belt, stick to the replacement schedule or before), BMW, VW, Skoda, Mazda, Subaru. There will be other brands I haven't listed too, but that is off the top of my head. Some will also last longer due to simplicity, less electronics, availability of parts (popular car generally = more parts available), etc.

  I’d argue the hybrids are probably more reliable than the gasoline versions. Toyota has had the Prius out for decades and it’s insanely reliable. The e-cvt drivetrain makes it even more simple and durable. They’re now in the recent RAV4s and probably in the refreshed Camry unless I’m mistaken. EV I agree though I wouldn’t touch a Toyota EV ever. Way better options out there

  The honeywell air purifier in the corner of my living room is at least 8 years old, and shows no signs of slowing down. For pet stuff, like litter boxes and food/litter storage bins: Iris USA. Durable, solid, the bins are airtight and come with casters. Based on anecdotes: Toyota. My father drove a '98 Corolla coast to coast and back when it was \~15 years old, without any difficulty. My mother just parted with a '05 Corolla with about 350000km or 200k miles on it, and she only gave it up because there was a crack in the frame, it ran *fine*.

  so basically there aren't any. people are gunna chug their brand loyalty soda. but 🤷‍♂️ find the classic formula a car with a low tress engine and a manual or classic geared transmission. Toyota Camry has a 2.5 liter non turbo making like 160hp. that thing will run along time because it literally don't make enough power to matter. trucks aren't gunna be that way, they have had a power race for a couple years now. they all make huge power for tiny engines.

  As a car guy - the tldr answer is Toyota. They still build cars to last and to be easily repaired. You will pay the price though these days - some models IMO are priced absurdly for what they are. But in general, the less there is to break, the better. Less conveniences like parking sensors and cameras, heated and auto dimming mirrors, automatic lift gates, etc. Avoid sunroofs and moonroofs like the plague. Engine-wise - pick one with no turbo and with port injection only, or both port and direct injection. Get AWD only if you reaaaaly need it - e.g. you live in a rural area with lots of snow. Winter tires do much more for handling than AWD. Avoid CVTs. If you can drive a manual - the best option. Two exceptions to the Toyota reco: the new Supra which s a BMW, and the GR86 which is to a large extent a Subaru so engine reliability is probably not the best.

  I am not loyal to any brand… excluding Toyota I will only ever buy a Toyota (unless their longevity goes to shit, which seems like it isn’t and won’t any time soon). I have seen Camrys go 350k, 200k, kids in high school would drive Corolla’s with 400k+ miles on them. They are simple machines with little to no flair, that get you from a to b and don’t brake, if they do they’ll at least say “don’t worry man we’ll at least get you to the shop” you drive it to the shop and they look at an axel split in half and go “how in the ever living fuck did you drive this 20 miles to get here” and you’d say “I thought it sounded a little funny but it drove fine other than a little rattle” Oh you bought this Camry when your child was one because your BMWs engine blew up when you sneezed on it? Well I hope he likes this car but it’s gonna be his when he turns 16…oh your on your 4th Mercedes? Huh I haven’t bought a car in…wow 20 years maybe it’s time to buy one my 4Runner does have 500k on it, meh it’s still rolling just fine alright see ya later got a 2 week 1000 mile off roading trip in the Mojave desert with this puppy!   My 2011 Camry was totaled after someone hydroplaned into me. I use part of the insurance money and got a 2007 Avalon. Toyotas for life! They've gone 300k+ miles, unless they were in an accident, or the idiot son-in-law decided he wanted to customize it while forgetting that he's a moron and can't tie his shoes even with a video with step by step instructions.

  My 06 Tacoma cracked 250,000 miles yesterday. Still purrs and gets better gas mileage than ever, and the guys at the shop love having me bring it in for whatever minor thing is going on, they always comment haw it’s in great shape and should just keep on going! Best thing I did was “downgrade” from my 00 Tundra. Doubled my gas mileage, got limited slip differential, it did cost in comfort, bed space and towing capacity though. All life is a compromise.

  Michelin tires have never let me down. Long-lasting, good traction, no flats, good ride. WeatherTech floor mats have saved my carpets. Pyrex kitchen ware, Civivi and Spyderco knives. Honda and Toyota have been good for me up to 250,000 miles.

  They just stopped making them but the 5th Gen 4Runners have proven to easily run 300k miles+ with proper care and feeding. ….once my ‘98 4Runner kicks it, I’ll probably get that next. Or a mid 2000s Land Cruiser.

  Toyota 4Runner/Tacoma/Land Cruiser (last generation—not the new ones, at least for now). Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Camry are all top of game for longevity. That said, check out current Volvos. I would favor the T5 models over T6 due to less engine complexity. They also offer an optional comprehensive 12 year 150,000 mile extended warranty on new cars, and at least until recently their CPO cars could get 10 year unlimited mileage. My family has had Volvos since the 1950s, and I find the current ones still have many of the qualities of those cars. They are very solid, well-made, overall reliable, but do have some nickel and dime problems. People on the Volvo forums all like the longevity, reliability and ease of repair of models from the early to mid 2000s, aside from a few years (2014-2017) when they first came out with the current 4 cylinder engines.

  I have several Toyotas of about the same vintage and it’s still very easy for me to get parts. Most things I’ll go through amayama for, then aftermarket or dealer. There’s also about a dozen or so examples of any given model on any given day down at the scrapyard.

  Most cars aren't going to last a long time anymore, I'd say the closest will be any Toyota hybrid. Those have proven to last a long time. Stay away from all CVTs (not e-CVTs, those are very different). If you like trucks, I would say the Nissan frontier as it keeps the old V6 and transmission that they've had forever. They are actually quite reliable. I would not trust any turbo 4-cylinder truck or car to last more than 150- 200,000, mi.

  2009 Toyota Highland Hybrid. 230k miles. Completely tortured it with poor maintenance and irratic driving. Pulled far too heavy stuff. I would leave today on a 1,000 plus mile trip without a care. Bought its replacement but still drive this one 99% of the time.

  My Frye leather boots (I have 3 pairs, 7-10 years old) and all are still going strong with original soles. I will get them re-soled when needed. My Scandinavian 100% wool sweaters (I have 6 of them, all over 30 years old). Not quite BIFL but I inherited my partner's father's 2007 Toyota Prius. It just hit 100k miles at 17 years old. I hope to have it for another 17!

  Well, take those claims with a big grain of salt. Sure *some* cars in the 70s/80s were crap, especially many American-built ones. But I drove 1970s Japanese cars well into the 1990s and never had an issue with any of them. Put 200K plus on several different Datsun (Nissan), Honda, and Toyota cars before selling them, never had one really break in any way that was permanent or expensive to fix. I drove an 1974 Datsun coast-to-coast four times in the early 1990s with zero problems. Friends had similar experiences with Japanese cars. American cars, however, were a different issue. I remember being stranded alongside the road many times in the 70s/80s in vehicles that were made by Chevrolet, Ford, Chryster, and AMC in particular.

  Depends on what you're buying. A 20,30, 40 year old Toyota or Honda will give less major headaches than one you can buy post 2020. A 40 year old Mercedes is a better reliability bet than anything German vehicle in the past 20 years. American cars have always had the, "hey shit breaks, go buy parts and fix it". Now cars are iphones, "this thing is going to be great until the very minute your lease is up"

  Did you buy the Lincoln new? If so, and if it's in the budget, look at the bigger Lexuses like the TX and LX700. The Toyota Sienna is also amazingly roomy/comfortable/efficient if you can do a van.

  In the states, the time-tested best large SUV is the Suburban/Tahoe/Yukon/Escalade. Recent generations added a whole lot of tech fluff and they need more maintenance than they used to, but the platform can still be trusted to go pretty damned far, especially on lower-trimmed models with the 5.3. Change your oil on time and AFM won't be a problem. The next best choice would be the Toyota Sequoia. Its less complicated than the new Land Cruiser and easier to work on. Value for money is a little bit less because a Toyota badge still adds a premium to the pricetag.

  Can you give a price range or certain features that are must haves? In general, you can't beat Toyota or Honda, or their luxury brands: Lexus and Acura. Subaru is also solid (they're partners with Toyota). If you're considering an suv, and have a lot of money to spend, I would get a Toyota Land Cruiser . There's a reason why you'll find 15 year old land cruisers for over $10k. Econo car, I'd pick a corolla over a civic because the Corolla has a timing chain instead of a belt. Midsize sedan, Honda Accord. Full size, Toyota Avalon or Lexus LS460. Out of all the cars, if money is no object, I'd get the LS460. Truck, nothing beats a Toyota. Small suv, Honda CR-V. Mid-size suv, highlander, pilot, or 4Runner.
