  Is it worth it to spend 1K more on a Trane HVAC over a Goodman all things more or less equal? Any realtors on here? What about resale value?

  I would spend the 1k. From my experience Goodman will have issues. While the parts have warranty the labor won’t. The 1k over 10 years is negligible

  We have a Trane and 10 years later - it’s been flawless. The key is to do maintenance and keep them clean.

  The installer matters more than the brand. Having said that, Trane is more selective about who can carry the unit vs. Goodman. Inside they more or less all use the same parts. How much is the system? Also same SEER to same SEER and comparable systems? Variable fan, single vs double stage heating and cooling etc. make sure you’re comparing apples to apples. I’d spend the $1k more for the Trane probably if the installer was solid and the features are the same. Depends on the reputation of the Goodman installer. Did they both do load calculations or just assume it was correct and replace with what was there?

  Not sure what the market is like where you are but if I saw a Goodman I’d assume you did things on the cheap. If I saw a Trane then I’d assume you took good care of the house. Am I most people? Does that matter in the market you’re in? Is that even a valid assumption? Answer is probably No to all 3.

  I just installed a Trane 80% furnace in my home, DIY (it was a $200 Craigslist find, cost me about $1000 or so to reduct the house and install the furnace up in the attic). Furnaces are pretty simple appliances until you get into heat pumps. Personally, I don’t think the more efficient furnaces are worth the extra installation headaches especially if you are replacing an existing 80% furnace.  Most brands are pretty similar, and your best bet at getting a good life out of the system is to have it sized and installed correctly and by a team who actually cares about their work.

  The reality— it depends. And it depends within a brand. There are instances where there are essentially no differences — for example Trane model x and American Standard Y. Same company. Different brands. Equal quality. Just labeling. But there are other instances where same factory, different labels, and different quality. There are instances where a model may be made exclusively as a sale item (same label, same look, slightly different model number, but different internal quality). Craftsman sometimes did this.

  More info needed. Gas or electric furnace? Gas or electric water heater? Tanked or tankless water heater? Why one brand for both? Buy best in class for whatever type of unit you're after. Furnaces you're probably looking at Trane, Carrier (I have a Carrier 80% gas), or Lennox. Tankless water heaters, probably Rinnai, Navien (I have a Navien tankless gas), or Takagi. With gas furnaces, lower efficiency generally leads to more reliability in that they are simpler systems without the condensing. Plus the added cost made it like a 12 year break even for me over the gas savings. With tankless water heaters, buy a flushing kit and learn how to use it. Do it no less than annually, more if you have harder water. Can't help ya on tanked heaters.

  I know HVaC are not bifl but what is a very long lasting one?

  My HVAC guy swears by Lenox and Trane but said that Daikin have a better warranty. I haven’t researched any others as I have been extremely happy with my Lenox for several years.

  Just replaced my 25-year-old HVAC (Trane) and it was still running. Just not as efficiently. The new one (Trane) is a bit bigger and dual fuel system — heat pump and gas furnace for below 35F. I’ve used the same small independently run business for 25 years. Yearly tune-ups really do lengthen the life of units in my opinion. I also run mine low and slow at 64F in winter and 74F in summer. My HVAC said my new unit should be good for 20+ years.

  Parents 1966 Trane furnace. It’s pure analog and probably not super efficient but it still does the job.

  Yep, arguably the best inverter heat pumps on the market. They merged their U.S. operations with Ingersoll-Rand (Trane) in 2018. They’re now METUS: Mitsubishi Electric Train HVAC US. Most of Trane’s side-discharge inverters are actually Mitsubishi units. It was a 50-50 U.S. merger to market and sell in North and Latin America but Mitsubishi Electric (the Japanese parent company) is still its own entity.
