  I adore my 935 for air travel. I came to the same conclusion as a more casual traveler. Yes, it is heavy, but I haven’t had a single issue yet traveling in North America. Your mileage may vary, but if you’re looking for unkillable, it’s a great choice. Unrelated but I also often just pack it in the bed of a pickup because it’s weather sealed.

  Not quite. There is a separate line for pilots and FAs https://aviation.travelpro.com/ Platinum Elite is pitched to them as separate luggage for “leisure”. That said, I have Platinum Elite and swear by it. Really bomb proof for normal travel and have had free replacement via the warranty.

  If you do plan to travel a lot internationally (particularly outside of the US/East Asia), get a quality bag but I wouldn’t really worry too much about BIFL. There’s so much theft that I simply assume my luggage could get stolen at any point, so I would hate to lose an expensive bag. A travelpro is good enough, but not so expensive that if it gets lost or stolen, it wouldn’t hurt too much to replace.

Travelpro have great reviews here, FA's use them, but they give a discount to Pilots and FA's because they know that people check out what baggage they use.. smart marketing. They're worth checking out if your budget doesn't allow for B&R.

  From a travel pro( ex FA), I recommend TravelPro. Why? Because the practicality beats out every other brand I ever looked at (including the higher end brands such as Tumi, LV, Briggs, etc). They are recommended because they’re the best functionality wise and the quality is great too. I really appreciate all the thoughtful inclusions and compartments built into these carry-ons from this brand.

  I will second travelpro. Bought the crew series 10 years ago when my first job required travel nearly every week. Haven't traveled as much the past 5 years but it's still going strong. Had a couple zipper pulls go missing but those were replaced under warranty. Will also add, it's generally only international domestic routes (ex. routes between 2 European cities) that require the slightly smaller carryon size. Any flights that I have had to or from the US have enough room for US sized carryons, even on non-us carriers.

That matters when something eventually gives out. **• Premium lines from crew trusted brands such as the bigger Travelpro models** These tend to feel sturdier than typical consumer luggage, and a lot of frequent travelers and airline crew like them for long term durability. **• Large reinforced hard shells (for example Level8 or Samsonite premium lines)** If you prefer a hard shell, look for thicker polycarbonate, strong zippers, solid wheel assemblies, and reinforced corners.   TravelPro is solid but check if they actually make anything that big - most of their stuff tops out around 120L from what I've seen. You might need to look at cargo/expedition cases at that size, something like Pelican makes but those are gonna be heavy as hell

  I had a problem with the zipper on my Travelpro elite carry on, emailed customer service with a picture. They asked about some details (serial, production lot, etc) then shipped me a brand new one. Super easy and great customer experience. I have 3 of them in various use and won't ever buy another brand. Just not worth the $50 savings.

  Are you mostly a domestic or international traveler? Do you need/want a secondary compartment for suits/shirts/dresses? Do you like flat packing or do you care? Expandable or not? What else do you travel with as a personal item (backpack/purse/briefcase)? I’ve had my original Briggs and Riley international carry-on for 15 years now. It has seen millions of miles and over 70 countries. It has been to jungles in SE Asia, safari in Africa, quaint European cities, tons of tropical islands, etc. I’ve had it serviced once in all of that time (just this last year) when I finally got around to having one of the interior screws replaced alongside 2 missing zipper handles. I also have the medium sized B&R which is awesome because the carry on fits inside. So I can go somewhere I know I’m going to shop (I once brought home 50+ lbs of LEGO from Germany in that bag), check the medium size and roll the carry-on to the plane. My mother was an o&g executive and traveled extensively and always swears by her travel pro. Beyond brand, make sure the bag has the features that you will use most (size/shape, expansion, suited, outside handles or inside handles, spinner or 2 wheels).

  The best part about Tumi is the design. You can really tell that a lot of thought went into the placement and size of all of the pockets. My travelpro seems indestructible but the pockets make exactly zero sense. It's like they just made sure the shell was durable and then randomly slapped a bunch of pockets on it without a single thought about how people would use the thing. The worst part about tumi is the warranty. I have no idea why they don't stand by their products. They are easily good enough to justify a ten year warranty.

  TravelPro, if not this then Briggs and Riley.  Osprey backpacks work pretty well, the Dayk Lite 26+6. Tumi was my bag of choice for the better part if a decade but really went downhill when they went Nylon and dumped the lifetime warranty. For two decades I flew every Sunday Wednesday and Friday mostly US Air. It was TUMI then. I'm a casual now, maybe 10 flights a year.  My BnR Garment bag looks brand new after 5 years. I swapped out my Osprey for the BnR XL backpack 3 years ago with similar results.  Osprey was starting to fray at the seams and straps but man it held its own.

  I don't necessarily need to, but my company provides the benefit so it would be stupid to not take advantage. Last year was the first year of it, I bought a TravelPro suit case, a suit from men's wearhouse, and a few dress shirts, etc. I recently found out it was going to be continuing into the foreseeable future, so I'd rather spend it on nice things that will last rather than replacing the same things every year.

  I’ll give you an idea as someone whose family has been and currently is the Authorized Warranty/Repair Center for most of the major luggage brands for over two decades. If you’re traveling only a few times a year, you don’t need to splurge and buy an entire set. Instead, buy a few pieces that are practical, lightweight, quality, and affordable. Currently, I would say the one brand that has all of the above without breaking the bank is Delsey. They have several styles you can choose from and they are, for the most part, great quality and come with a fairly comprehensive and easy warranty. TravelPro is also a good one, depending on the specific style/model. However, if you are the type of individual who just wants the best, even if not traveling often, then the GOAT currently and for the past several years has been TUMI. TUMI’s quality is top notch and it is reflected in the price. But…if there happens to be even the slightest problem with your piece, their warranty is currently unmatched in the industry and is a smooth process. One thing to look out for is TUMI vs TUMI Tech, which is the lower end of the TUMI line, and although decent, not comparable to the original TUMI. Years ago, some of the major players were of course Samsonite and Hartmann. However, once these brands became too big and began buying others out, their quality decreased significantly. Oddly enough, Samsonite purchased TUMI and upheld its quality, while watching the parent brands quality decrease. You remember the times when Samsonite was eponymous with any suitcase? Unfortunately that isn’t the case anymore but luckily some brands have still kept quality as a priority.

  Samsonite, Travelpro. Samsonite for the hard case but light ones and for the warranty. Simple, durable. Travelpro because pilots buy them for durability... buuuut... Pilots don't have weight or dimensions constraints, and they need practicality over the ability to pack as much as they can in a restricted weight and dimensions, while also being ok to pay way more for a work tool that they use multiple times a week compared to an average joe travelling max once a month.

  Agreed. I've had my Travelpro set since 2013 and everything is in great shape except the zipper pulls are almost all missing. I've been too lazy to get them repaired and just make due pulling on the zipper itself, but otherwise no complaints 12 years in of pretty heavy use (at least 8+ trips a year).

  Seconding travel pro. I have a similar travel lifestyle as you and my travelpro carryon has by far been my favorite suitcase. I like the soft fabric one as a carryon (has more give to pack it full than a hard case), and the first one ive bought I’ve had and flown to Australia, Hawaii, Mexico, and all over the US since 2019 with no problems. I have a separate hard shell one that I use for a checked bag—can’t remember the brand of it but I got it for free through Southwest because they broke my other checked bag I’d bought from Marshalls (first time flying with it lol). Haven’t had any issues checking the new bag or my travelpro. I also recently bought a smaller travel pro carryon for Europe travel, but I had never actually been stopped abroad with my other one I was just ~anxious~ about preemptively following all the rules. Also, if you don’t check bags often, I’d also recommend a packable rollable duffle instead of a full suitcase. I use that as a second checked bag sometimes, and it was like $20 from Walmart.

  The biggest issue I’ve had with mine are zippers. If I don’t lock the TSA zippers, the equipment the airports and airlines use will rip them off the bags. Travel pro have designed them to do this. The only downside is having to pay the $10 shipping fee for them (so far Travelpro hasn’t charged me for new zippers yet… just the shipping. And I’ve had to request new zipper tags twice now).

  So far this brand has been the most robust luggage I’ve owned. Used to travel a lot and sometimes a short trip would damage some budget bag. Even after slowing down with travel, used to go through cheap luggage all the time. My most robust and longest lasting pieces of luggage are a duffle bag my father bought for me at a local flea market from some budget luggage booth and my trevelpro rolling bag I got years ago. Everything else, including various brand names, has long been disposed of or destroyed. The Travelpro still looks brand new except for scuffed up wheels after numerous trips across the country, both as a carryon and being checked in.

  Get a Travelpro softcase but make sure you buy the Platinum Elite. The outside fabric is thick and well constructed. The wheels also roll great. I also had the Travelpro Crew Classic but it ripped in around a year so I wouldn’t buy that again.

  What the others said. I use the traditional 1535 and 1615 AIR. They’re smaller interior dimensions than other brands of the same size, which forces me to pack more efficiently. You can abuse the shit out of it because it’s just a pelican box with bolted on handles and wheels; all of which are user replaceable. Stand on it, sit on it, stack it, whatever you want.

  A long time ago (\~20+ years) they used to be, but then they were acquired by private equity (early aughts) and then later Samsonite. They were the go-to for professional travelers (consultants, etc.) but now its B&R and LuggageWorks and (at a lower price point) Travelpro. You can see from the way they advertise that they've shifted to being more of a fashion brand. I would argue that Coach leather goods also decades ago were really high quality but then shifted focus to fashion.

  I use a travel pro tote bag... holds everything you describe with the added bonus that it has a sleeve that fits onto the handle of a roll aboard for traveling. I am on my second one now, previous one lasted about 14 years with daily use and was still functional just looked very worn.

  I have had victorinox (great warranty, heavy AF), B&R (solid bag, also heavy) and TravelPro roller boards. I like the TravelPro the best. I’ve just received a PeakDesign rollerboard though and I suspect this will be the keeper. Their bags and other camera and travel gear have greatly exceeded my (pretty high) expectations. And I did appreciate the unique compression. But it was heavy and the wheels did not glide as expected. I’m bringing my cheap travel pro carryon on my next trip because I’ll be alone, I’m getting older, and don’t want to worry about it. I’ll probably sell my B&R.

  I own both BR and TP. BR for check in and TP for carry on. BR is overbuilt and can take a beating several times over. Add the lifetime warranty, it’s worth the price. Carry ons don’t quite take the beating as check in but so get a fair share of mileage. TP platinum elite soft side for the longest warranty (I think the travel+ soft side gets it too).

  What are some of the best products/brands you love splurging on?

  Quality blender is up there for me too, I am a Blendtec guy but Blendec or Vitamix, either way, if you use a blender regularly it makes a huge difference. I also have the Dyson hair dryer, I got a deal on one of the refurbished models with a coupon, seemed like a ridiculous purchase but that thing is really good. Doubly ridiculous because I really only have a beard to blowdry but a damp neck is not a good thing if you didn't know. Since you mentioned Dyson - Their vacuums are pretty good but in the end I'm not a huge fan, I think bagless is inferior, but a great vacuum is a real convenience, not a fun one but it makes life easier. I recently bought a Sebo D4 and that thing is next-level. Zojirush water boiler/dispenser. I like electric kettles but in the USA with our 120VAC they're slow. The Zojirushi dispensers will hold water at 208º and they last forever. Older models had gaskets that required occasional replacement but they sell the parts, my current one with the double-wall design has been on pretty much for ten years straight except when I unplug it to go on vacation. Great convenience appliance for coffee and tea lovers, especially for someone who does a French press every morning. Great kitchen tools, knives, cookware, utensils. They're all just hunks of metal in the end so anything good quality is buy it for life. Apple electronics, although laptops, phones, etc. can't really be BIFL. Porsche car - Not necessarily the cheapest to keep for life but they claim 70% of the cars they've made are still on the road. Not brand-specific but decent home audio, especially a 5.1 or better surround setup for movie and TV. Even YouTube documentaries sound so much better, you get spoiled by great audio, I find even narration lacks impact and presence when I'm listening to a podcast through earbuds vs. watching on my surround system. And while audiophilia gets people spending ridiculous amounts of money with the proliferation of cheap consumer electronics the last few decades you don't have to spend much to get a way better experience. Bicycle stuff, but not really brand specific and I don't go as crazy as a lot of enthusiasts, but don't mind spending on good bikes, good gear and good accessories. Ekornes Stressless furniture - very comfortable to me, IMO even most expensive furniture isn't really comfortable or ergonomic, a lot of it is plush, superficially comfortable but not supportive and wrecks your neck and back if you spend a lot of time in it. Similarly, Herman Miller Aerons for office duty. Travelpro luggage - most of their lines aren't expensive enough to be a real splurge, but very nice and durable, way better than cheap luggage some of which seems to be single-use these days.

  How much do you travel? I think most reasonable quality luggage is functionally BIFL or BI2xFL. My Travelpro carry on is soft shell (2 wheeled) and is at least 15 years old, probably over 20 as it was handed down from my mother. I'm not a flight attendant nor do I travel extensively for work, but I am in Europe and that bag as been on planes 16 times so far this year and another 4 times on trains and is no worse for wear. The only reason I'd consider replacing it is I prefer 4 wheels, which I didn't care about when my mother gifted it to me. All of that to say, buy what you want -- you probably won't have to sent it off to the states anyway.

  Briggs & Riley wheel problem

  I just came searching for this. I purchased a Baseline Spinner Carry On and was confused why it kept drifting in random directions so thought I’d see if others had reported this. It’s super annoying. Looking down at the wheels I noticed that while I was rolling it often not all the wheels seemed to be making sufficient contact with the ground or had too much friction and are not rotating which would explain this. My wife has a TravelPro Platinum I just bought and my son I using a Hartman carry on. Both of those roll effortlessly. B&R should really fix this. As it is I may consider returning the bag though I like it otherwise.

"Affordable" luxury brands like Tissot to high-end brands like Ball, Longines, Raymond Weil, etc. Quality 100% leather goods...belts, bags, purses, etc. Apple MacBook, iPad Airs, and newer model iPhones... even if you're an android/PC user, you can download most of the software/apps so you're still compatible. Bonus...Apple products have high resale values & trade-ins. Gift Cards... avoid prepaid Visa/Mastercard as they have fees for non-use.

  Comparing TravelPro bags

  Yup! TL/DR - I went with the Maxlite 5 because it's a little lighter and seems to have better quality interior materials. The Maxlite 5 weighs 6.8 lbs, Walkabout 7 weighs 7.1 The officially listed dimensions are identical but the Walkabout 7 looked to have a bit more depth (maybe 1/2") but it's hard to tell with an unpacked softshell. The Walkabout 7 has an "8-wheel" design while Maxlite has 4. I didn't see any difference when I rolled them around, though they were empty. The exterior front pocket on the Maxlite 5 zips down further and has a nicer look to it IMO. The Maxlite 5's interior pockets have a more compact mesh which seems more durable. They have the same limited lifetime warranty. The build quality of the handles are identical as far as I can tell but look slightly different, particularly the branding. I contacted Travelpro directly through chat on their website. Not very informative. They just said the differences are purely aesthetic.  Pics of both are in the link below. Maxlite is on the left.   Samsonite or TravelPro Suitcase

  Can you get the Maxlite Pro with the two wheels instead of 4? I had two suitcases with the single spinner wheels (not Travel Pro, but Swiss Gear) and they gave out long before the suitcase did (and I ended up donating them). The smaller carryon handled a bit better with the single spinner wheels, but the larger one was a beast. I cant vouch for the Samsonite bags that you linked because I am in the USA but I have had great luck with that brand. I had two soft side checked size bags for probably 15 years and I used them on a regular basis until they finally gave out. It was probably the wheels or the handles that gave out first. I bought them in the late 90s and used them until around 2014. I have had a hardside carryon for the last three years and it has been great. It is a really well built bag. My husband actually uses it more than I do. I don’t have a Maxpro bag but I do have a hard side Travel Pro checked suitcase that I really like and it is well made. I have had that one just about 3 years as well.

The tech space in them takes up less space than in a hard side suitcase. Also maybe it is just me but while I thought I would like the hardside bag with the laptop pocket I decided it was easier if I just kept that in my personal item bag. I also have a carryon suitcase from Beis, and I like it a lot. They make a smaller international size suitcase now so I would look at that. I really like my Beis carryon on and I have zero complaints. The wheels are nice, the handle is padded, I rarely have to use the extension panel. I have a large hardside suitcase from Away and I am super happy with that case as well. I had to replace a handle and they sent me one quickly and haven’t had a problem since. Their carryon suitcases get a lot of love. Quince also makes a duplicate of the carryon for about $150. I have heard good things about Monos as well but I don’t own one.

  I bought my daughter a medium checked size suitcase as we were taking a trip to Europe. We went with the Heys brand. The suitcase is nice and works well for an under $200 (USD) suitcase. If you really want to spend the money then go with Away, Monos, or Beis. Those brands (plus Heys) come in trendy colors. If they are okay with soft side luggage then look at Travel Pro as well.

  You might like Travel Pro! I feel like they're a step up from Samsonite for luggage brands but more affordable than Briggs & Riley. I got my Maxlite 5 carryon suitcase from them in late 2019 right before a trip to Disney and its become my favorite piece of luggage! I had chronic pain and mobility issues at the time and needed something light and easy to maneuver. I'm also a lugggage/bag fanatic (been debating buying an Aer bag recently!) and its hard to impress me with bags especially because of my pain issues and this suitcase has. It doesn't have a ton of fancy features but the durability is top tier. Its gone on countless trips with me. You can stuff anything in it and bang it around as much as you want and its fine. I've stuffed random Christmas gifts in it, multiple souvenir popcorn buckets from different trips, including one shaped like the green alien from Toy Story (that was after my disney trip) dog toys, a coffee maker, you name it. I also frequently lug it through snow & ice from the car to my in-laws house and the wheels have held up completely fine. My fiance's travel pro suitcase is even older. I think his is going on 11 years old now?? And still works like new!

  I ended up with the TravelPro Flight Crew Carry-On and I love it. I really wanted to splurge on the Briggs & Riley bag at the time but it was hard when the TravelPro bag looked pretty competitive at a great price and with a great warranty as well. The one thing you are really missing out on from the Briggs & Riley bag is their compression system and the fact the poles are located on the outer case of the bag making the inside a perfect cube. Although I usually just line those sections with socks and underwear so it ends up being flat anyway 😅

  I've been a loyal B&R customer for close to 20 years and that is now coming to an end. Countless stories of them making it difficult for warranty claims online. I tried to get some zipper pulls and they wanted me to ship the suitcase back to their repair center instead of tossing a few in an envelope and mailing them to me. My son needed a new carry on suitcase and I just bought a TravelPro Flight Crew 5 for 1/4 the price. Heavy duty, no frills......just like the original B&R bags.

  When I was replacing my everyday travel case, I asked the people who travel the most - pilots and flight attendants. TravelPro came up the most.   According to Travelpro, "Lifetime" is 2 years for a zipper. I'm left disappointed by their warranty service.

  Interestingly, as of 5/1/25, the Platinum Elite product is the only line among their “better” products that still does NOT have YKK zippers. Their new in 2024 VersaPack+ line does as does their newly reintroduced Crew Classic line as well as the Travel & Leisure line. I suspect that we will see it gradually roll into release on the PE line as the existing inventory sells down because their newly introduced PE backpacks and underseat bags all now have YKK zippers when they previously didnt have them. i think that they've added so many lower end price point driven product lines in the name of volume (that don’t have the quality of their better product) and the whole brand reputation has suffered as a result. These lesser products have smaller wheels - some even have single rather than double spinners, thinner “light“ extension handles with fewer adjustment heights, no bottom assist grip, many lack TSA locks, etc. Yes, they can hit an attractive price point and their sales numbers go up but at what cost? I think their better product is still a very good value for the money and mine has so far performed well both domestically and internationally but their ”value” product lines are hurting them both in consumer confidence and reputation.

  Those cheaper aluminum suitcases aren’t going to last, especially with the spinner wheels. If you’re willing to spend $300 per bag, much better to go with a travelpro with rollaboard wheels. I managed to snag one from one of the crew collections that they don’t sell through their regular website, and it’s the best. And for a carry-on, Patagonia duffels are my favorite and still fairly comfortable to carry as a backpack. Go for the MLC if you want some sort of organization; I know it comes in black.

  See if your family will let you get a Travelpro. They're a high end brand like Samsonite. They even invented the suitcase with wheels iirc. The travelpro maxlite is shockingly light. But to explicitly answer your question: yes. But the bag sucks

  Pretty sure travel pro is the brand pilots and flight attendants use for travel bc of how durable they are / good the warrenty is. Personally I buy Samsonite, def not BIFL but the one I got from marshals 9 years ago is going strong, might have to replace the wheels soon but that’s not bad

  In a Pilot, I’ve had my travelpro for 5 years now and it’s probably done more flying than any normal person would ever do in a lifetime. I’ve replaced the handle(easy and cheap) and the wheels(just rollerblade wheels) and it’s still kicking. Highly recommend it.

  Airline Pilot here: I daily a luggage works stealth. Heavy, ugly, but easy to repair/ get parts. I parkour it on and off curbs all the time with no hesitation. The wheels come off easy for replacement/ clean out all the gunk. About once a year I do that and tighten every fastener I can find. 3 years of work use. Broken 1 zipper and 1 snap on the strap that holds the handle in the stowed position. If I wasn’t flight crew or was a little gentler on my stuff I’d 100% get Briggs and Riley. If that wasn’t in the budget I’d get a crew model from travel pro.

  Do you think BIFL is actually cost effective?

  For me, it comes down warranty and reputation of the company. Areas I have invested in: \- F&T Wax trucker jacket - last you a life time and then some. \- Kanto speaker system for computer. I switched out already 3 cheapy speakers within 5 years. I know this one will last me as long as I can take care of them. \- Computer desk from Flexispot this thing wont collapse on itself. (I have seen desks do that) \- Bombas underwear/socks - I wouldnt call them BIFL but buy them to be comfortable for X amount of years. Sure I can buy 300 shitty socks and underwear that would last me my life time. Knowing every day my ass and feet will be uncomfortable is not something I am okay with. The underwear is pretty good and creates a nice visual presentation. The socks no comparing to any other socks. \- Travel pro carry on suit case - I travel alot and having a suit case where it can hold 10-15lb backpack on top without tipping over is a major plus for me. \- Seiko or Orient watches or traditional watches in general - I personally think every man needs an actual watch. Smart watches are cool I own one. They are obsolete within a few years and materials are subpar for price. You pair a nice watch with your outfit I guarantee people will notice. In addition, watches are miniature art pieces. Coop sleep pillow - Best pillow I ever owned and since I have to sleep every night it is a no brainer. Overall, I dont think everything is BIFL I think somethings should be buy because its good quality and comfortable. Sure I can spam buy socks, pillows, or buy the subpar suit case. At the end of the day those things will still work. I tell you this my feet are comfortable. My sleep is set up for maximum quality. My travel journeys wont be as frustrating knowing whether my suitcase will get checked or fall flat forward when you have to take a shit at the airport.

  Can this be replaced?

  Had the same thing happen on my Travelpro bag. Popped by my local sporting goods store and picked up replacement rollerblade wheels and bearings and within a few minutes had the wheels replaced. Easy peasy and super inexpensive. It rolls like new nowadays.

  Buy Once Cry Once items?

  Maybe not quite as bougie, buy for someone who'd only ever owned Kmart special luggage and agonized for 2 years on buying it, I do not at all regret what I spent on my Travel Pro Platinum luggage set. It was north of $600 for everything I wanted in the colors I wanted. I travel semi-regularly and work a job where frequent travel is always a on the horizon. My brother who used to do travel work for a living and went through luggage like tictacs, liked it so much he bought the exact same set. I adore all the little thoughtful features and how nicely they roll.

  I’m going to go out on a limb and say that if you check luggage often, no brand will last forever (though some warranties might replace). I have seen even the toughest bags completely destroyed on the tarmac and caught in machinery. I’ve also had bags lost forever. If you are checking your bags, read the warranty carefully about what is covered and the process for claiming (mailing off luggage for repair can take a long time). All that considered, I’ve been happy with my mid-range TravelPro. However, I do not consider it BIFL.

  Travelpro Warranty Confusion

  As I said in my other posts, I've taken the bag over lots of irregular pavement and cobblestone streets and haven't broken a single one - so I haven't needed replacement parts. However, if I did - paying $20 for a new set of wheels wouldn't even make me blink (the bag costs between $200 and $400 new)

  When You Got To Travel, What Luggage is the Best Buy It For Life?

  Travel pro wheels also are the same size as roller blade wheels so you can go into any skate shop.   Also (from experience) the OeM wheels use a plastic bushing whereas the roller blade wheels use ball bearings.   I’m rocking some bright orange poly wheels and they’re smooth as glass on airport floors.
