What are the best E-Bike brands and models under 2000$
get a real brand name, e.g. Trek. a bike that looks and rides like a non-e bike. as light as possible. no weird off-brand aliexpress or amazon bikes that do not have top tubes. from a real bike shop. this advice will get you a bike that is serviceable and not a piece of crap that will end up as scrap in 2 years.

My 1999 trek is still going strong. It takes some maintenance, but that's partially due to age. It takes a lot less maintenance than a 1999 car.

Why are bikes so unreliable?
I have two bicycles, one is a 1973 schwinn road bike and the other is a 1999 Trek mountain bike. While not daily uses, they both see around 1000mi per year. The only things I've had to replace on both are the same things I've replaced on my car due to regular use; tires, brake pads and chains (belts for the car equivalent). Bikes however scale quality with price. A 250.00 bike is very different than an 1000.00 bike. They ARE absolutely BIFL if you dont get a Walmart special.

1. A PC running Linux - no reason you can't be using a computer from 10 years ago for your day-to-day 2. 1990s Toyota/Honda - no reason you can't be driving a good car from 25 years ago for your day-to-day 3. Brick house on a raised foundation - siding needs replacement and slabs crack 4. 90's Trek aluminum bicycle - no reason to spend $1000s on a new bike when a little thrift store action gets you something lightweight and made out of aerospace-grade bonded aluminum - it will never rust. 5. The cheapest Admiral washer/dryer combo you can get. Mine were $350 apiece, the washer body needs replacing due to rust but it's going strong 15 years later and they still make the same model and have barely raised the price. $400 for 15 years of washing is a no-brainer.

Brands you swear by that have Buy It For Life quality products
Any good quality road bike say from Trek, Giant, Specialized, but my favourite will last a lifetime. But tons of others brands. Also given the depreciation of these things you dont need a new one, refurb an older one with good quality parts (Shimano etc) at a bike shop. At the end of the day the core of a bike is a frame nearly everything else can be replaced. Decathlon’s Tribans are a good alternative on a budget.

What's the oldest item you still use daily that has withstood the test of time, and what's its story?
My bike is an early 80’s Trek touring bike. I bought it on Craigslist during the pandemic and I ride it around New York for all my errands, it’s become a big part of my life! When I ride a block I’ve never been down before I like to think that maybe my bike has already seen this part of the city with a previous owner, of which I’m sure it’s had a few.
