  Tumi for backpacks. Bought mine 5 yrs ago it feels brand new even after daily use bringing to work every day and on every travel trip I've done Messermeister for knives Eddie Bauer for parkas. Going 10 yrs strong. Dooney and burke for purses/bags. Shockingly well constructed, my cross body small bag looks new and I've had it 6 years and throw it on my car floor Tempurpedic mattresses (obviiuouslyyyyy don't keep the same mattress for life lol but ours is 12 yrs old and feels new. Only buying a new one next year to size up from a queen to a king) Chaigoo twist red lace interchangeable knitting needles set My husbands American fender bass guitar Bio-ionic ceramic hair straightener

  The best part about Tumi is the design. You can really tell that a lot of thought went into the placement and size of all of the pockets. My travelpro seems indestructible but the pockets make exactly zero sense. It's like they just made sure the shell was durable and then randomly slapped a bunch of pockets on it without a single thought about how people would use the thing. The worst part about tumi is the warranty. I have no idea why they don't stand by their products. They are easily good enough to justify a ten year warranty.

  Personally I wouldn’t buy a set. I would buy a good quality weekend bag (smallish duffle) that can double as a personal item and then a cabin luggage acceptable hard case. Money left over? Buy a bigger duffle bag. This is based on my 25 years of international business travel. First you need less than you think you do, and second you want flexibility. For brands on the bags there are many but check sales at brands like Tumi.

  We got two full sets of Away luggage as wedding gifts 6 years ago. I’m a consultant and travel extensively for work, domestic and international, and my Away luggage all looks brand new. I love the Bigger Carryon for domestic travel. I’m literally on a plane right now coming back from an extended work trip in Italy with the biggest Away checked bag. Zippers, locks, straps, wheels — everything on them all still function perfectly just like when we got them. I love them. My husband just got me the newer Bigger Carry On zipper expandable bag as he knows I am obsessed with my Away luggage. It’s perfect in winter when clothes, shoes, etc are all bigger and bulkier. Can’t say enough good things about them! I am a diehard Tumi fan when it comes to backpacks though.

  I’ll give you an idea as someone whose family has been and currently is the Authorized Warranty/Repair Center for most of the major luggage brands for over two decades. If you’re traveling only a few times a year, you don’t need to splurge and buy an entire set. Instead, buy a few pieces that are practical, lightweight, quality, and affordable. Currently, I would say the one brand that has all of the above without breaking the bank is Delsey. They have several styles you can choose from and they are, for the most part, great quality and come with a fairly comprehensive and easy warranty. TravelPro is also a good one, depending on the specific style/model. However, if you are the type of individual who just wants the best, even if not traveling often, then the GOAT currently and for the past several years has been TUMI. TUMI’s quality is top notch and it is reflected in the price. But…if there happens to be even the slightest problem with your piece, their warranty is currently unmatched in the industry and is a smooth process. One thing to look out for is TUMI vs TUMI Tech, which is the lower end of the TUMI line, and although decent, not comparable to the original TUMI. Years ago, some of the major players were of course Samsonite and Hartmann. However, once these brands became too big and began buying others out, their quality decreased significantly. Oddly enough, Samsonite purchased TUMI and upheld its quality, while watching the parent brands quality decrease. You remember the times when Samsonite was eponymous with any suitcase? Unfortunately that isn’t the case anymore but luckily some brands have still kept quality as a priority.

  Tumi is well regarded. I travel about 20 times a yr for work and think nice luggage is over rated. Personally I buy used and have literally gotten luggage off the street. Like literally a nice empty hard shell cary on was found on the streets of Toronto, still using it. Also got a large Antler hard shell case found next to a dumpster after burning man. Still using that too 🤣🤣

  $175 for an Original Briefcase in clean shape is a solid buy that’ll look right with a suit, just expect patina and minimal organization. For the eBay deal: keep all communication and payment on-platform, and ask for close-ups of the bottom corners, strap holes, leather cracking, zipper teeth, and interior stains; confirm the “Made in USA” tag and that the zipper runs smooth with no mildew smell. Navy shows scuffs more than tan, but a damp cloth and occasional leather conditioner on the strap (sparingly) keeps it presentable. It’s water-resistant, not waterproof, so stash resumes in a poly sleeve and your laptop in a slim padded sleeve. Comfort fix: add a sheepskin or Tom Bihn Absolute shoulder pad and an organizer like a Cocoon Grid-It or Bellroy Tech Kit for chargers and AirPods. I’ve used WaterField’s Bolt for travel and a Tumi Alpha 3 on client days, but Latico Leathers is what I grab when I want softer leather and hidden pockets for daily carry.   Top Opening Checked Luggage - Lojel vs 4MYTU

  Hi there. I purchased a Cubo Medium and it cracked within the first year of use. Not impressed. I am a frequent traveler and while the design is nice being top opening, the material for the outer shell simply cannot handle the wear and tear of once-per-month, checked-in usage. There are also some weak points on the back of the luggage and the handle is only medium sturdy. I would highly recommend going with the B&R Baseline or Tumi Alpha dual access for check-in options. Lojel did not honor their "first year hassle free warranty" and I had to jump through many many hoops to try to get a replacement. If you are looking at the Cubo carry on options, they are pricey compared to the Delsy top opening carry on you can buy at Costco for about $100. I have the Delsy Front Lid Opening Carry on and it is an exceptional value.

  My picture doesn't do it much justice, but Sam's Club is currently carrying one hell of a nice travel bag... It's $30 and this thing has sooo many pockets, a really nice build quality, and just a smart layout overall... Definitely worth checking out

  Passport holder suggestions

  I ended up getting a tumi one. It's a quick hook and it fits two passports, boarding passes and my airpods. The most important thing is that when I unhook it, it first in my pocket perfectly. I understand the risks but I think the convenience outweighs it when traveling as much as I do.   I have a nice Links of London one with my football teams emblem embossed in the leather (a gift from someone who works at the club meant for players😂) I love it …but they really are the most pointless things- passport control HATE them and refuse to look at the passport until I’ve removed it. They won’t even touch the leather to pass it back haha Passports are tough and don’t need protection but if you do have more than one passport and other documents you want to keep together then Tumi, Briggs & Riley or Victorinox are all good.

  I've also had a beloved Tumi carry-on - a stiff interior shell covered with ballistic nylon - from the 1990s, and the telescoping handle started to stick. Tumi no longer carries the parts and I guess they've deemed it irreparable... wonder how hard their service department tried? A real bummer as the body of the luggage itself was still in great shape and could've gone another 30 years. I was offered the same $150 gift card as the OP.

  I just went through a messenger bag/ briefcase buying spree on eBay. I got a buffalo Jackson, tumi, Timbuk2 and a Filson. I think the Filson is the winner for me but the other 3 are also very Solid pics. The Buffalo Jackson is a little big for me and the Timbuk2 was a little small. The timing is beautiful black leather and very practical but the Filson original briefcase just feels right to me for the style I’m going for. But you really couldn’t lose with any of them. Found them all on EBay, the Filson was of course the most expensive($230) and the Tumbuk2 was the lowest $60. The other two were $150 to 160

  The crazy thing with Tumi backpacks isn’t that they last, it’s that they don’t age. Old school LL Bean and Jansport backpacks last but they’ll look like they’ve been through a lot. The exterior of my Tumi backpack looks basically new after 10 years of commuting. The only real flaws I’ve found are that they’re heavy (durability comes at a cost) and, at least in mine, the material that lined the inside of the water bottle pocket cracked and flaked but I use an insulated bottle anyway so that doesn’t bother me much.

  The one I bought doesn't have any expansion (or compression). I bought the 21" version (the size of the case, have to add a bit for handles/wheels) . I do really like the B&R bags and the compression system is great. I'll continue to use mine, hopefully, for years. However, with the increase in price, potential decrease in quality and a "no questions asked" warranty that doesn't seem to work as advertise, I'll pay $225CAD for the Flight Crew 5 vs $850 for the B&R going forward.

  I’ve had a Tumi brand suitcase we bought off a Costco surplus retailer about 15 years ago. The quality from the Costco Tumi line is supposedly not as good as a regular one, but it’s held up perfectly and is still my suitcase whenever needed. If you can find their stuff at a discount, I think it’s totally worth it.

  I was just as shocked when I found out how much they are. It's crazy. But it is a damn good bag. I would never buy another for that price, so hopefully this last me another 10+ years.

  It was a crazy experience, I used to own a MetroPCS shop in Philadelphia and I would have people coming in all the time trying to sell me stuff. The dude came in one day and had this bag, I think I paid $60 for it. I had never heard of the brand before, but It looked like a well-made bag and the guy seemed like he was in a real bad situation so I was like "why not?" and bought it. When I found out what it was and how much they retail for I was absolutely shocked. I figured, $200 bucks or so but it was listed for over $700 (which is insane for a backpack) so I got a hell of a deal and it's been my everyday bag since.

  It's my do everything bag, it's basically a part of me. I use it every day for work, laptop, charger, a lunch, meds, headphones etc. When I travel it's my carry-on where I keep everything that I don't want lost. I don't know anything about the company or their shady or not practices but it's a great bag.

  I should add that I didn't pay full price. I bought it off a crack head (literally) in Philadelphia for a song, but they are ridiculously expensive. Luckily, I haven't had to use the GPS function, but it's nice that it's there. It's an excellent bag. It's been through a lot with me, and it's still holding up. Some of the nylon inside is freeing, but structurally, it's in near perfect condition. I don't suggest anyone pay $700+ for a book bag, but if you have money to burn (or know a crack head) I have nothing but good things to say about this bag.

  Luggage (again!) but deciding what to buy is only half the battle

  My feeling is that with Tumi you get quality but also a lot of the money goes for branding and marketing (I never heard of the other brands till I did the research but I see Tumi stores in every airport).

  You left out Tumi? I’m a fan. We each have a set. One Briggs & Riley and the other Tumi. I like the black ballistic nylon of my Tumi compared to the green of the Briggs & Riley. Mine looks brand new and the Briggs & Riley shows marks and stains on it from baggage handling etc.

  Buy it for life Luggage

  If you travel for work literally every week like myself, buying a high end bag isn’t a bad idea. Samsonite is not high end btw. Most if not all of the top shelf companies offer a LIFETIME no questions asked warranty. A guy on this thread said he was going through 3 suitcases a year. He probably spent enough that year to get a Tumi bag.

  Big, good laptop backpack?

  I don't know if they make one large enough for a 17", and they're pretty expensive, but check out Tumi. I bought one probably 15 years ago and it's been my daily work bag ever since, often lugging multiple laptops and tablets around. It still looks new if you don't look to closely, and it's not showing any signs of needing repair or replacement.

  What brands do you trust to always deliver a high quality product?

  I travel a lot for work and didn't skimp on luggage. Tumi suitcases are BIFL as they have lifetime warranty. Took both my suitcases for service twice in the last 10 years and they replaced the wheels, zippers and inside parts that were wear and tear for free! Only downside is that I can never change my backpack or buy new cases for myself as my current ones will never die. Cost is a big thing. Backpack 800$. Cabin luggage 900$. Big suitcase 2000$ approximately.

  What’s the best luggage for under $150

  I have sampsonite line 8 and Briggs and Riley. Briggs is hands down the only BIFL of those three. 150 does not go far. Check Facebook marketplace and Craigslist for tumi and Briggs. Travelpro has gone to shit. The rest is cheap Chinese crap.
