How can a company continue to make money if their product lasts forever?
It made sense post WW2. No inventory overhead, free advertising by using Tupperware parties to showcase them to friends, family, and local community, and also giving a way for women to earn money which was very empowering at the time.

Yes and No. The MLMs exist to suck money away from people by promising them Big Money for selling the widgets. And they make these salespeople buy a bunch of widgets. But then the widgets don’t sell. So now this person has to go find some other sucker to become a salesperson so they can unload their worthless widgets on the new salesperson. Tupperware didn’t promise us riches. They promised us a cracker container if we’d host a party. And we got the container. And that was great. :)

It seems like their model was really to minimise risk and overheads by offloading that risk to franchisees or whatever they're called, as opposed to actually trying to rip them off. It seems there was real money to be made by those who sold them. Plus to sell Tupperware or Avon in stores would actually massively undermine their own workers/franchisees. Consider that these (almost entirely all) women were probably mothers who wanted / needed a second income - or in many cases perhaps divorcees and single motherd in a world which had perhaps only had one or two feminist waves. Tupperware and Avon were giving women a livelihood. They'd be fucking rude to undermine these ladies by selling their wates at regular stores. Now it's of course common for both sexes to work. Whilst we should be thankful to feminists for their part in driving equality, the fact that capitalism is failing means two incomes are actually necessary for most households. I wonder if Tupperware shares are cheap?

I'm going to get down voted to hell for this comment, but I'm married to a man whose mother is a Tupperware lady. My house is with a number of Tupperware fails. I have Tupperware brand items that most people don't even know exists. Over the years, I've wanted to get rid of a lot of it but didn't want to be offensive about it. Cookware with handles so heavy, they tip over in the handle's direction. Cookware lids so heavy and with such a poorly designed handle that they rotate in hand. Incredibly poorly balanced knives. Unbalanced, bizarrely shaped flatware. All kinds of "Chef Series" pieces that I highly doubt any professional would care to use. Huge, super clunky citrus squeezers. All things I didn't ask for but we're foisted upon me by a mother in law with a basement filled to the brim with Tupperware. The Tupperware containers can be nice, and yes, they last forever. But Tupperware has lots of fails. In some countries, I think loading up on Tupperware everything (gadgets, flatware, cookware, etc) in your kitchen is a substitute for doing actual homework, and dare I say... actual cooking. I will die on that hill.

Did this have a cheese grater than fit on top? If so yeah I think we had that. We used a different Tupperware- possibly the lettuce keeper because the lid was domed- we used for a specific Xmas cookie. My cousin and I would fight over control of that cookie jar for the overnight merguines.

My grandmother had 3 of these un different colors. One was for potato salad, one was for macaroni salad and one was for shrimp salad. Probably not great to use these days, but I ended up with 2 of them. Spice jars in multiple sizes
Look up "Modular Spice Container" On amazon. Tupperware makes the originals, but it looks like there are some decent quality copies now that are cheaper. Super good containers. Stackable, air tight, have a shaker and pour spout, and you can label them with stickers and a pen or sharpie if you like. I've had a set of these things for well over a decade and a half, maybe longer.

I’m still using most of the kitchen items I bought in the 90s. A LOT of it is Pampered Chef. I’m still using my Pfaltzgraff dishes I got for my wedding in 89. Appliances, linens, and electronics all wear out but my Tupperware and Pampered Chef stuff still works really well.

Any 'manual' coffee maker is going to be your best bet. Areopress is my preference. You could also go with a pour over (V60), French press or moca pot. French press is great, but the glass ones tend to break eventually. If you like cold brew, Tupperware makes a great cold brew maker that is super durable, and looks good.

What is your most unintentional BIFL item?
Random box full of wooden backscratchers that was buried in my grandmothers basement for at least 30years, found them in 2009 when she passed. We have them scattered around each of our houses and use them not only as scratchers, but also as extend your reach tools for grabbing things that have gone under furniture and such. They’re sturdy as hell and will definitely outlive me. She also had an old kitchenaid stand mixer from the 1960s that finally gave up the ghost back in 2010 ish after a marathon fudge making session 😂 I’m in LOOOOVE with Texas ware plastic bowls. My favorite, was my granny’s and purchased sometime in the 60s (go figure right lol). It’s ugly as sin but in perfect shape. So far they’re the only bowls I’ve ever found to have a completely smooth inside, so you don’t have to worry about things getting stuck in the lip that’s around the bottom of most mixing bowls. No cakes with random unmixed dry ingredients just chillin at the bottom. They come in all different sizes and colors and I usually find them on eBay or in thrift stores. The Tupperware canisters that mom and I both use for flour/sugar/etc were also granny’s and purchased sometime in the 60’s-70’s. They still seal perfectly. Flannel mens long night shirt that was bought as a gag gift for my grandfather in the 70s, I have it now. Several Pew pews that are older than I am, still in excellent condition. Calphalon pots and pans purchased in 2010, still in perfect shape after being used pretty much daily since. Solid slate top pool table purchased in the 50’s that’s still in excellent shape and has had 4 generations of our family and friends shooting pool on it. Otherwise we have a bunch of things that are older than I am (35) or that were purchased during the first 10-15 years of my life, that are still used all the time: freebie plastic kids cups from various restaurants that are still alive and kickin, some of the thicker plastic collectible cups from McDonald’s and Burger King, ceramic Campbells soup bowls, plastic paper-plate holders, an awesome mini fridge that finally stopped working last year - going to see if it can be fixed, old navy workout pants/leggings from 20ish years ago that are perfect aside from some bleach stains acquired during cleaning the house, 50+ year old well loved moka pot that was passed on to me, 20ish year old pampered chef self warming ice cream scoop, ottlite lamps in different sizes used daily over the last 15 years never changed a single bulb, I use an old pair of firefighting gloves for oven mitts - I wore them for my first 2-3 years while firefighting (06-08 ish) before I got a new pair and these were retired to my kitchen as they’re still in perfect condition, the bedsheets that every kid had in the 90s with 101 Dalmatians and lion king print, a king sized feather bed/comforter purchased in the 90s and used daily since. We’ve had a bunch of great things purchased over the years that have lasted WAY longer than we expected them to. My hubby is still somewhat surprised when I pull out random things in great shape, that he’s never seen and I tell him they were my grandmothers when she bought her first house. I furnished my first house with so many different things of hers, especially kitchenware and furniture, and they’ve held up perfectly, so why spend the money to buy new ones 🤷🏼♀️

my mom got an orange peeler forever, probably still has it from a Tupperware party once I think it was a door prize. I had the hardest time finding a similar one but I use it every day and I’ll have it forever. We also had the farberware popcorn pot with the perfectly made lid. But that’s about it. Other than two carved native rocks my son found under a huge tree in our yard, those things I can’t lose. I keep thinking I’ve lost them and they show up again lol two houses and 8 years so far. One is a little herb bowl and the other one is a bird.

Tupperware gifted from my MIL who is 90. She said it was originally sold for lettuce, has a tray that’s removable and keeps what’s in it above the liquid. It’s perfect for watermelon. She said she thinks she got it at a Tupperware party in the 50’s. It says made in the USA Orlando,Fla on the top.
This is actually a celery keeper sold in the 1970's. The lettuce keeper was a round green bowl with a spiked piece that went through the core.

[Request] My lunch just exploded in my bag ruining everything inside of it. What do you use to carry food to and from work?
I have a fabric bag. It looks like the disposable paper bags but is reusable. Some synthetic material. I bought it at an Earth Day festival in 1976 or 1977. The printed Earth on it is a little worn but otherwise in good shape. I've carried it on its own and in tote bags and back packs. Inside, sandwiches in plastic sandwich bags, yogurt in factory containers, soda cans, leftovers in a wide range of containers. Often a ceramic plate, flatware, and a napkin in the bag also. My favorite containers are Lock-n-Lock but I've used Tupperware, Rubbermaid, Snapware, and reused takeout containers for soup, etc. Never a problem. I usually run it through the clothes washer every ten years or so whether it needs it or not. If your lunch "exploded" in your bag I have to ask what you did to cause that to happen.

This Shu Uemura eyelash curler that I’ve had for over 20 years
Of course, it's BIFL. All it does is pinch eyelashes. It's not really a built for the grind tool. This is the cast iron of cosmetics instruments. This post has inspired me to post my 3rd generation Tupperware measuring cups and spoons.

Any fundamental differences between Tupperware 1424 vs 679? Lettuce keepers.
The 679 is an older model. My mom bought hers between 1980-82. If you care about bpa's you want one manufactured after 3/2010.

Airtight cookie jar/container
Tupperware makes modular mates and spice storage that are airtight and will keep bugs out. They are pricey but they work.

Unpopular Opinion: "BIFL" as an excuse for overspending
My blender from the 1950s, my cheese grater from the 1930s, my can openers from WWII, my corn fritter cast iron from the 20s, my mid century cookie cutters and pressers, my vintage Pyrex, my 60s Le Creuset and Dansk enamel ware, my 50s glassware, 1940s Navy handwarmer handle-less Corning coffee mugs, my old Melmac Texasware, my antique silverware, my 1980s enamel colander I bought at Pottery Barn, my old Marie Callender pie tins I use for nachos and breading, my old old Tupperware, and my extremely old unopened bottle of bootleg prohibition whiskey that's in my cupboard just to look at for kicks.
