  Metalhead here. An old rocker was telling me I need a denim vest for gigs and sewn patches. Ideally sleeveless. Any ideas?

  Look into brands like Iron Heart or check out the heavier weights from Brave Star or Unbranded Brand, we're talking 21oz+ selvedge denim. It's a splurge, but they are literally made to last forever and fade like crazy.

  Maybe, but OP is talking about going from wranglers and your recommendations are pretty damn pricey for someone used to buying wranglers. N&F and Unbranded are good bang for your buck, imo. Personally, I can't justify $200-$300 on a pair of jeans.

  I like Unbranded, generally well made jeans. The simplicity of designs makes them timeless IMO. I do prefer Iron Hearts heavier weight denims. More resilient, age better, etc. Really made to withstand a beating. I agree tho, I don't see any jeans as BIFL, but you can own good pairs for a couple decades unless you're really hard on them. I have a pair of Iron Hearts I bought in 2016 during a visit to Portland. I'm not really hard on them, but they look like they did when I bought them. I should also note, zero washes. NONE hahaha. Every month or two I toss them outside in the sun for a day. I'm slightly embarrassed to admit that haha.

  The “Unbranded” brand is an affordable entry point for high quality selvedge denim, and while it isn’t truly BIFL it can be repaired to extend its life and develops character as it ages.

  r/rawdenim might be worth searching. Naked & Famous and Unbranded are good brands with decent pricing. There are very few denim mills left in the United States and I'm fairly certain the ones that are left do not produce raw selvedge denim. You can find quality jeans made in the US, but the denim will likely be sourced from Japan. Some brands still have some jeans made from dead stock raw denim from cone mills in North Carolina, but sizing will be limited. Brave Star Selvedge has some. After that's gone, they're either getting it from Cone Mills in Mexico or a Japanese mill. Gustin has American made denim and may also have us made dead stock denim. Those all have options under $200 (sometimes under $100, if you're patient and check regularly for sales) and they size up to 40-44.

  High Quality Jeans under $150?

  \+1 for Unbranded (great entry point into raw selvedge) but you might want to stick with 100% cotton 501's and see if sizing might be the issue. If jeans are too tight they tend to wear out at high-friction areas like the crotch and thighs so maybe size up and see if that's any better. I think a bit of a baggier fit is more comfortable as well.

  What are the best jeans brands (and model)?

  I love Levi’s 501s. Make sure they’re 100% cotton (no stretch) and if you can afford it I’d recommend the premium line. If you want to go up another tier, try looking at raw selvedge pairs. I love my True Guy fit from Naked and Famous. If you want raw selvedge for a bit cheaper, Unbranded is another great brand I wear.

  I was gonna mention my 21oz Unbranded jeans! They’re at the lower end of raw selvedge but still really amazing.

  I definitely agree with your point. There are lots of good quality clothing options out there right now - you just usually have to pay for it. There are exceptions though: for example, a pair of thick, selvedge jeans by Unbranded cost around $100 and will last ages. But many people expect to pay $25 for a pair of pants and at that price point, you'll never find anything good, unless you learn to thrift.

  Is selvedge denim actually better/more durable/BIFL?

  I don't know about bifl, but they will be higher quality than regular jeans and most likely last a lot longer too. The unbranded brand are pretty cheap (for raw denim) and it seems like one of the more respected brands out there. I myself have only owned more "budget" brands of raws though so I can't compare them to the $300 brands. I do own a pair of unbrandeds though that are still going strong after about a year, (though they are black and admittedly don't see as much wear as my gap japanese selvedge raws) and I'm hoping to get a pair of their [slim straight 21 oz.](http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00YE2THZY/ref=mp_s_a_1_16?qid=1449118422&sr=8-16&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=unbranded+jeans+men&dpPl=1&dpID=41i5oCHpusL&ref=plSrch) for Christmas.
