  I like the Terramar ones and the Lands End (tops only, the pants are bad) I also use Numi undershirts, though I haven't tried the long sleeve. And for sweat concerns there are also dress shields! also Uniqlo.

  Uniqlo was my go-to until they thinned the material. My drawer is full of their old stuff and I am nervous about them breaking down. Some are 10 years old. My mom has a breakdown of the material percentages of the ones she likes vs the newer blends. I didn't bother trying the cashmere because it was see through and I sometimes wear them on their own. Good to know it still.may work as a base layer.

  Looking for women’s boxer briefs that aren’t Woxer

  I was coming here to suggest them. I haven't worn them in a while for various reasons, but the ones I had held up really well, and they sell a variety of inseam lengths. You also avoid the whole cock pocket/bunched up fabric in the front issue. For men's boxers, Pair of Thieves is what I wear, but Uniqlo can be good, too. I was all-in on Mack Weldon, which were very comfortable, but spendy. Their 18-hour jersey boxer briefs do hold up, though.

  Basic brands like gap and Uniqlo often have solid basics like this. Pretty easy to find a cotton or blend, depending on the amount of stretchy and tight you actually want/need. I wear mostly gap long sleeves under my sweaters, and they work great! Had them for at least a decade by now.

  I’m a female in the military and I only wear boxer briefs. The brands I wear are 1. Comfneat (women’s amazon) 2. Uniqlo (men’s boxer briefs ) 3. Pair of Thieves (men’s boxer briefs) I wear a size medium in all these and i only wear black cotton ones!! Highly recommend!

  Fibre content matters more than anything, so start there. Go for high merino wool or long staple cotton with just a touch of elastane, because anything mostly sythetic will trap odour quickly and feel unpleasant before long. Flatlock seams are worth seeking out since they sit smoothly under a sweater. Single jersey is usually the safer knit because it has stretch without turning the shirt into compression gear... though some shops market it oddly and it can be hard to find exactly what you want Woolx Mia and Icebreaker Siren pieces usually line up with what you're after, and for cotton the older Uniqlo U long sleeve tees using long staple cotton were solid if you can still track them down. Raglan sleeves are useful because they stop the shoulder seams biting under wool layers and they move more comfortably. If fuzz irritates your skin, superfine merino in the 17 to 18 micron range tends to feel smoother than cheaper cotton and it feels more breathable and soft and comfortable and light all at once making it easier to wear under knits.

  my kid is wearing mostly his cousins hand me downs rn, but i generally buy on sale/clearance from h&m kids/baby, old navy and gap baby. old navy for some basics for a cheaper price (on sale) my toddler grows like a weed and is quite tall for his age so he outgrows things very fast. h&m things usually fit a bit bigger/long so i get more use out of them which is what i always prefer. I'm always told by people my son is really well dressed which always makes me happy as i do like to dress him up! A lot of his hand me downs are also from h&m and my nephew IS the best dressed toddler i know haha. I have had pretty bad luck with carters and nike stuff, runs small and shrinks a lot! i only use cold water to clean and low/air dry to dry all my things but they still shrink. for colder weather/thermals the wal-mart thermals are super comfy and the uniqlo warmest ones WILL keep ur kid cozy (they are expensive but imo totes worth it). but def lurk on the apps and check out the stores if youre ever in the mall i always find some deals in the sales/clearances

  Have you looked into merino wool blends? I know you said no wool but the really fine merino stuff feels totally different from regular wool - way softer and less scratchy. Uniqlo's heattech line might work too, it's synthetic but super thin and smooth seams

  Primary, Uniqlo, miniBoden. Hanna Andersson used to be best in this category, but not sure how they are now because my kids outgrew it a long time ago, but even towards the end of their tenure wearing it, the quality had gone down. They had a new CEO that cut costs, and I think that CEO is now out, not sure how it is now. Carter's also used to be good quality for the cost - again, not sure if they've been enshittified or not b/c my kids have outgrown them. But they used to be very good quality! Hopefully still are.

  I have had some success with what limited items i chose to buy from Hanna Andersen on clearance. I also really liked the heatgear layers from Uniqlo. You will find weird things out about your kid, like maybe reinforced knees are not reinforced when your child is involved. I focused on how things felt - shirts and sleepwear should be soft and breathable. Pants should be more durable. Sweats and leggings will not be, so don't spend $$ on those. My kid grows fast so I didn't even have time for them to really destroy much other than pants and a shirt or two. So I also didn't buy a ton in each size. Currenty they have 2 pairs of shoes because they outgrow them every 12 weeks right now. One for play and one for school. I have some in the next size up ready to go when they get there.

  Reasonably priced natural fiber clothing

  I shop on Vinted for clothes because natural fibers are so pricey. Pact are good for leggings and basics, Dillinger, smartwool, and icebreaker for merino, I also have a few 100% merino wool tops by karrimor that I love love love. I found them in a massive clearance sale on sports direct and got four black and four grey tops. But I’d happily buy them again even if they weren’t on sale. Had them for nearly two years now and they look new. The leggings didn’t hold up as well, but I also wore them nearly daily for two years ago. Son de flor make the most amazing linen dresses and I got all of mine exclusively on Vinted for £45-80 each over the last year and a half. It’s probably my all time fav clothing brand. Uniqlo have good basics that are natural as well, and I heard good things about quince but haven’t tried them myself. If you don’t mind bamboo viscose, I have leggings from fishers finery that are ace. The crotch area seams aren’t amazing now that I’ve abused them in the gym and wore them all the time, but they lasted well over a year as well and have pockets! They’re a mid of bamboo viscose, organic cotton, and some elastane, but it’s hard to escape elastane unless you buy 100% merino.

  Uniqlo heattech is decent for the price. I kept using it during exploration work in just below freezing temperatures. It kept me warm as long as i was moving and dries fast. Outside of work i prefer icebreaker merino base layers though, they are more comfy and feel warmer when you're just walking or doing casual stuff.

  Merino wool base layers - which are the most durable?

  If you need a long sleeve base layer just go to a thrift store and buy a lightweight merino sweater. Most times I go there's plenty on the rack. I used to buy them for under $10 and they've all out lived proper base layers. Failing that a Uniqlo merino sweater is way cheaper than icebreaker and is going to last you much longer.

  You can get decent synthetic base layers from Costco or Uniqlo, nothing wrong with them, they are warm, but merino is definitely nicer and a step up in comfort imo. I have some meriwool brand ones from Amazon which I think are good quality and didn’t break the bank

  You’re going to get a lot of answer bias here, because the people shelling out money for merino wool are going to be pretty die hard about it. I think it all comes down to your personal preferences, your use cases, and what your experience is like. For example, I got a full base layer set (pants and shirt) from Uniqlo for like $40 and it keeps me completely warm. I do sweat in it, and yes, if I workout or an active all day, I’ll like a shower when I get home, but I’d do that anyways regardless of what I’m wearing. I shower and throw my clothes in the wash, and I can do everything the next day with no issues.

  No synthetic dont work as well. If you are in an absolute crunch for budget, but need some right now, then consider cotton ones. I had a pair of jockey cotton ones (the older ones used to be thick, they new ones are doable if you layer). The new ones I think are 60pc cotton. The old ones i have are 90pc cotton non stretch.maybe search for cotton ones i had heard something called indera and Uniqlo had em.

  I never believed it until I hit up my recent thrift shop, but second hand. I’m a woman but I look in the men’s racks. I got a 100% Italian cashmere J Crew sweater for $25. I also love the brand Sézane. They’re French and the quality and craftsmanship is unmatched and pretty fairly priced. Free returns if you’re not sure on sizing. Massimo Duti is also another good option (made in Italy and solid quality) and the Zara website sells their stuff. Also, most Scandinavian brands are high quality. There’s a Swedish H&M outside the US called Weekday and some of their basics are solid. Got a 100% wool sweater for 50€ and it keeps me so warm. Downside is they don’t have stores in the US :/ . I also try to get reformation at sample sales. If the weather is super cold, I’ll wear a 32 Degrees (Costco) or Uniqlo base shirt. Typically $5-7 and add infinite heat! I’ve tried Quince but I found the quality lacking.

  I have heard mixed things about bronze snake and have not tried their shorts myself. For relaxed fit shorts that last I would look at uniqlo carhartt WIP or patagonia as they are comfortable and hold up well for everyday wear.

I've been on a similar hunt and recently discovered Forms & Folds - they make premium basic t-shirts in 100% cotton for both men and women. What caught my attention was their focus on construction details like reinforced collars and quality fabric that actually holds up over time. Their cotton feels really soft but substantial, similar to what you're describing. Also seconding the Uniqlo recommendations in the comments - their heavy cotton tees are solid. But if you want something that really focuses on those construction details you mentioned (thick collars, quality seams), Forms & Folds might be worth checking out.   I totally get the struggle of finding that perfect basic tee! The features you mentioned - thick collars that don't stretch out, side slits, and that perfect soft fabric - are exactly what separates a great t-shirt from just another cheap one. I've been through this same search and recently discovered Forms & Folds, which makes premium basic t-shirts in 100% cotton for both men and women. Their construction quality is really impressive - reinforced collars, quality stitching, and the cotton feels substantial but still soft. They're definitely more of an investment piece than Old Navy pricing, but the durability seems worth it so far. That said, from the comments here, Uniqlo's heavy cotton tees and Kirkland from Costco seem to be the crowd favorites for that sweet spot of quality and price. The Uniqlo ones especially get mentioned a lot for having those thick, structured collars you're looking for.

  If you find it itchy, I recommend a very good base layer, basically an undershirt. "Heat tech" from Uniqlo - he can buy online. Super lightweight, like it only weighs 3 oz or something LOL Very affordable, comes in many colors, sells all year around, and it keeps you unbelievably warm. I swear by it and so does my entire family LOL They last forever, too.... Washes well.

  Noted - I’ll try the cashmere first. I like Uniqlo but there isn’t one near me!  Sometimes I buy things at their stores in east Asia. But I usually avoid long sleeve stuff since the sizing is different. I have an emergency sweatshirt from Japan with very stylish accidental crop sleeves lol.

  I totally get your frustration - finding that perfect basic tee is like finding a unicorn! I went through the same search after my favorite shirts started falling apart. Based on your description (thick collar, side slits, soft fabric), you might want to check out Forms & Folds. I discovered them recently and their premium basic t-shirts are 100% cotton with really solid construction. The collar holds its shape well and the fabric is incredibly soft - reminds me of those quality Old Navy pieces from back in the day. They make both men's and women's styles. Also seconding the Uniqlo recommendations in the comments - their heavy cotton tees are solid too. But if you want something that really captures that vintage Old Navy quality feel, Forms & Folds might be worth a look. Good luck with your search!

  If you started your wardrobe over from scratch, what would you buy? (US)

  I recently moved overseas to a much, much colder continent so I did have to a) declutter and sort through everything I own, b) pack the clothes I needed for the year in a single suitcase and then c) collect a lot of new stuff to suit the new climate. I also might have a few contrasting choices as I'm a young-ish woman who likes dressing up and wearing interesting pieces (e.g. there's not a single grey thing in my wardrobe). I brought with me: **Tops:** 10-ish t-shirts, most from second-hand stores or small businesses; 3 cotton longsleeves (to be transparent, they're all Taylor Swift merch); 1 merino wool and 1 merino/silk blend long sleeve; 1 thermal shirt; 1 corduroy button up/light layer; 1 men's linen button up; 3 sports jerseys for working out **Dresses:** 4 thrifted cotton dresses - 1 mini, 2 midi, 1 maxi **Outerwear:** my Kathmandu raincoat and another rain-resistant jacket; 2 sweaters; 1 puffer jacket **Bottoms:** 3 thin cotton or linen pants (all fun patterns); 1 pair of hiking pants; 2 pairs of bike shorts; 2 mini skirts; 1 thermal pants; Lululemon leggings **Shoes:** black RM Williams boots; brown blundstones; white converse; teva sandals. The converse are falling apart (4-ish years old?) so will need to be replaced by another everyday walking sneaker and I'm keeping an eye out for brown leather boots to better match some outfits. Plus socks & underwear, swimmers, hats, beanie, bags etc. I've purchased another merino wool long sleeve, some soft cotton lounge/pyjama pants, some wool/polyester trousers, some thermal leggings and some jersey trousers from Uniqlo, a coat from a vintage store, and a Patagonia fleece from a second hand store. I also bought some 100% wool trousers from a second hand shop but they accidentally ended up in the wash and shrunk (still feeling their loss). This is tiding me over well for now, but I'm still building up my collection of athletic/hiking/outdoorsy gear and hoping to do that as sustainably as possible - sourcing secondhand, buying from reputable (and inevitably expensive) brands, choosing natural fibres etc. Also on my list: another sundress (but holding out for the perfect one), a pair of leggings more suited to running (as opposed to yoga) and a long gingham skirt. Long (sorry!) but I've been thinking about my wardrobe a lot this year so had lots of thoughts to put down!

  Looking for a winter coat

  I hear you. I just think that alot of these brands are not inherently better in quality and are currently just jacking up their prices due to brand name. e.g I have shirts from no-name walmart brands and primark which have lasted me much longer than the shirts I got from ralph lauren polo, even though they costed a fifth of the polo shirts. Is Amazon Essential cheap, yes. But they have a couple of gems here and there. One of which I think is their puffer jacket/hoodie. Also my 18$ primark thermal fur lined baselayer is much warmer and much better constructed than the 120$ base layer I picked from arcteryx. Another gem I came across was this Soft-knitted fleece shirt from Uniqlo. Got it as a gift. It was super soft light, super soft and I was blow away by how warm that thing was. So much so that I had to take it off indoors (granted I do get warm easy). Just checked and that thing is 29$. Ofcourse in alot of cases, expensive = better quality, but I think when it comes to clothing, that isnt always true.

  Sweaters for sensitive skin

  Look for sweaters made of cashmere, merino wool, and silk. Acrylic is a wool alternative that is less likely to irritate sensitive skin, but tends to get matted looking. Also highly recommend wearing a base layer under sweaters - Uniqlo heat tech is my go-to. Provides extra warmth and keeps the sweaters cleaner. The natural fibers actually don’t need to be laundered often. I also have sensitive skin and I can wear wool if I wear a base for protection. I have sweaters from over a decade ago from j crew, madewell, Victoria’s Secret, banana republic, and even H&M. They still look great. These brands are sadly using less natural fibers now. So I’d recommend shopping secondhand.

  Looking for a winter coat

  Do note, you don't have to look puffy or wear tons of things to beat very cold weather. When temps go down to 10F or below, one of the most important things is a base layer (32 degrees have them for $7-8. Uniqlo are great and like $20-30). Then wear a regular T-shirt and jeans on top and then one of the jackets mentioned above and you should be good.  Now if temps go below 0F, then you might have the add a down/synthetic vest or a fleece sweater/shirt over the T-shirt.  The top jacket will still stay the same.

  Looking for a winter coat

  Eddie Bauer Stadium Coat or Alpha Industries N-3B slim fit. Wear a cheap base layer (both top and bottom) from Uniqlo or 32 degrees and you should be good for 0F temps. We had 5F temps a couple days ago. I was out in my t-shirt and Jeans with the Eddie Bauer Stadium Coat and was toasty. Kinda felt like out in the open wearing a warm blanket. I also have Alpha Industries Slim Fit N-3B. Tested that one out too in 5F temp and it was equally warm.  You can find the EB stadium coat for $199 right now. Alpha N-3B is $250, but you can get 30% discount if you qualify via govx, bringing it down to 175$. My last Alpha N-3B lasted me 10 years before I lost it during move. Don't spend 3-5 times the money on other things like NF, or Patagonia or Arc'teryx or any of the other expensive brands.

  If you want something that actually lasts, go for heavier-weight cotton. Uniqlo U (not the regular Uniqlo tees) are solid, dense, don’t twist after washing, and survive a stupid amount of cycles. If you want even better: Hanes Beefy-T or Gildan Hammer. Not fancy, but they’re tanks. Longevity is mostly fabric weight + how you wash (cold wash, low heat dry).

  On one hand I've had a Uniqlo wool crew neck sweater for like 8 years that I paid 40 bucks for. 100% got my money worth. On another hand I have Filson brand wool sweater knit in the UK with wool from a sheep's first shearing. Also a sweater from Merz B Schwanen with merino and cashmere in the blend, knit in Portugal. I would rate both as extremely good quality. Both were around 300. You don't need to pay 700 for a sweater. And tbh a sweater isn't really a good candidate for buying for life. My Filson sweater I've worn really hard, hunting, camping, skiing, as well as casually. I've begun to have to do some darning on it and eventually it will wear out. Knitwear is not inherently durable IMO.

  Muji and Uniqlo offer pretty decent good quality at affordable prices. For example, thick wool knit sweaters at $50-80 I usually get from Muji and they are great.  Fjallraven is also another brand that makes high quality items are a slightly higher price, but no where near the prices you listed. Stay away from designer brands, they markup solely because of their name, but does not necessarily mean they are high quality.

  Before 2014, I was in the same boat as you, but a reddit post about "breathable underwear for large guys" in \~2014 helped me find these, so I hope they work for you as well as they have worked for me! I've had the same 14 pairs of Uniqlo AIRsm's in my rotation since 2014. I liked them so much, I got several more over the years and now I have \~25 in my rotation. The oldest ones still look and feel as good as day 1. I'm a 230lb, 6'1" guy for reference. I wash my laundry weekly with regular Tide detergent, and dry on medium/low heat without dryer sheets. I think 11 years qualifies as BIFL for undies!

They have airism underwear and the breath well, keep everything in tact, and seem to last a while.   Bulk yarn purchase by a company is a fraction of what you paid and automated knitting machines are of course the norm for any mass manufactured clothing. Hand knitting is cool for bragging and making your own stuff, but machine knitting is the exact same thing just more consistent and faster. The 3d-knit stuff from uniqlo is quite cool, they make seamless knitted pieces of clothing including complex parts (think I saw a sweater where the sleeves were not sewn on once).

  Where are you shopping that those are normal prices for you? I live in Canada (albeit the warmer part lol) and ive never paid more than 250 for a winter parka/coat. I go for reasonable brands anf shop their sales. E.g. Columbia, LL Bean etc...  Under that, a baselayer tee + a wool sweater is plenty. I cant imagine paying more than like 150 max for a sweater. Fleece works too for cheaper. E.g. uniqlo, banana republic... make sure you know how to take care of wool sweaters. A lot of people ruin wool with improper washing thrn blame the quality.  Winter clothes are about layering, not $1000 parkas.

  What are you buying? What do you think of staples like Uniqlo and J. Crew? Merino wool sweaters should last a long time and don’t need frequent cleaning. Likewise coats generally don’t get washed. I bought a wool/cashmere top coat from j crew end of season last year for sub 100. I expect it to last for probably a decade.

  Seconding u/tjc4. There’s a ton of great stuff out there. I’m wearing a $200-250 sweater I got on sale for under $100. I have a stack of $40-50 secondhand sweaters.  My new sweaters are outstanding and $250-300 at full retail? But also, most of the time how you take care of your clothes has more bearing on longevity than materials and construction as long as you aren’t buying SHEIN garbage.  My clothes from non-niche Gap, Uniqlo, LL Bean, Banana Republic don’t fall apart because I read labels and avoid high heat in the dryer.  There are plenty of other specialty brands out there making great stuff. But good stuff isn’t cheap, and a big part of that is labor costs. Too many people want high quality clothes with sweatshop price tags.

  For casual style, Get a Uniqlo dawn jacket. For more formal, look for wool, the highest the wool content the better. 100% wool may be really expensive though. Like someone said in a different comment, the weather is not that bad, you need to get used to it. I also moved to NJ from warm weather. Now I think 40-50F feels nice.

  Best winter jackets?

  Apparently Uniqlo's down jackets are really good. My husband literally only wears that and he's used it through both Chicago and Boston winters. It's lightweight, so easy to travel with and folds down into a bag so, it's very convenient. It looks really nice too. And for the extremely cold days, just layer the down jacket with a wool sweater. Marmot has great jackets as well but they're really bulky. I have a Ralph Lauren one from Macy's that looks nice and pretty good for harsh winters but it's so bulky. Honestly if you can wait till after winter around February/March, Macy's has sale on their heavy winter jackets and you will get great deals on some expensive ones.

  Jeans used to be made with all cotton denim and natural indigo dye, as with everything, they shifted production to a more industrial process. Many jeans also have polyester for the stretch. These modern jeans have a few advantages, they are almost all pre-shrunk and pre-washed so they don’t shed any dye when new and can be more comfortable. If you want longer lasting jeans, you’ll have to look into selvedge denim which are made with higher quality fabrica but they may shrink a lot during the first few washed and may take some time to break in, they may feel a bit rough at the beginning. Levi’s has a selvedge line and other branda like Uniqlo has a budget selvedge jeans. There are many other brands. You can also find other modern jeans that are not selvedge and high quality but I do not know which ones.

  Which moment made you switch to the "buy it for life" mindset?

  A wardrobe full of somewhat deteriorated/damaged clothes, tiny holes in seams or on visible panels, socks with worn out heels and toe holes, always annoying, but never enough to just trash it. I made an inventory on stuff I bought in the past that still remained in good state, so far I opt for Uniqlo Airsm short sleeve oversized t-shirts, they feel more synthetic than organic stuff, but after three years look as good as new besides the neck imprint being washed out (plus they dry over night when traveling). Socks were a surprise find, the Quechua Sock Hike 100 High from Decathlon have lasted as well multiple years on me now. I have one pair of airism boxers with a buttoned front, don't ask me about the exact classification, not skin tight, but very thin and smooth in material. Uniqlo doesn't stock them in this style anymore, and I'm open for alternatives. Pants are usually Levis 501, I can easily buy them blind as I know the model size that fits well, but they usually wear out around the center seam between the leg pieces after two years. I still have other clothes of course, but by putting more rotations on the proven items, I can reduce overall wear on what I need only occasionally.

  They're in high friction, sweaty areas. Uniqlo socks and underwear aren't that expensive. You can easily replace a weeks rotation of socks once a year without breaking the bank. Airism boxer briefs easily last multiple years but are by no means BIFL.

  You said you aren't interested in paying for brand, and I think there aren't any brands that do everything well. Instead it might be worth looking at individual items for attributes like material, construction, and sourcing. If you aren't going to buy a bunch of clothes at once, it would probably be better to decide what you want to buy before going shopping (like a singlet tank, walking shoes, or such). Uniclo is generally pretty good at synthetics and construction, but not great at naturals and sourcing. I have a lot of clothes from Old Navy that held up okay, but their current selection just isn't my style (lots of black or white blank graphic tees). Secondhand is really nice for an agrigation of different items in person when not looking for something particular (depending on the area and shops available) (Plaza Thrift and Plato's Closet have pretty decent stuff occasionally for people that like window shopping). I got a fishnet shirt from Amazon that holds up well, but I specifically wanted a fishnet shirt before searching for it.

  This is a frustrating answer, and honestly I am frustrated that it has been my experience as well, but I would not recommend trusting any brand wholesale when you are looking at the lower end of the price range. Heck you can't/should t at higher price points these days either. Check out the usual suspects (Uniqlo, gym shark, old navy ,etc) but always read labels and get hands on with the pieces if you can. In the same brands they will have great products made from natural fibers and others made with a ton of polyester with bad manufacturing. Also, with workout gear you actually want synthetic fibers to help with sweat wicking. Last comment is if possible I would consider going a bit above the lowest possible price to get something that is ideal for your needs. Not some high end brand that is all name but moreso Uniqlo competitors or slightly above. Nadaam does a pretty solid job at affordable cashmere, j crew is solid for a lot of classic pieces, and like others have said Uniqlo is still a good fit for what you are describing.

  There’s a difference in cotton grade that does not need to be advertised. That being said, those white t shirts from Uniqlo U series are 100% awesome. But they do not survive many washes well and drops sizes, talk about shrink to fit.

  Assume you mean MEN’s T-Shirts? I really liked the colors and fabrics offered by Buck Mason. I bought a bunch only to months later find small pinholes in the fabric. I’m done with them I’ve tried Classic Tees, BYLT, Mack Weldon and probably a couple others and never was impressed- mostly the fit was terrible (for me) Believe it or not, my current fav is Uniqlo. They’re about 1/3 or 1/4 the price of the Buck Mason and the quality seems good. The only downside is aside from your basic white, black and navy, the other colors kinda suck. But as far as quality goes, I think they’ll last as long as I don’t stain them. I also picked up a few of their base layer (like thermals) undershirts and they’re pretty good too

  Merino is a great fabric; it's great at wicking away sweat, drys quickly, and is naturally antimicrobial, but I wouldn't suggest it as BIFL. Even the expensive brands can still be a little abrasive. Merino requires more careful care than cotton and it has a tendency to develop holes. That said, seven years on, my Icebreaker merino t-shirts are still going strong with only a few little holes here and there. I just make sure to wash them at 20/30 degrees Celsius on a delicates cycle using a dedicated wool detergent. I would give another vote to Uniqlo t-shirts. I've had their suprima and AIRism t-shirts and they have lasted me years.

  What kind of jeans will last forever and have really good quality?

  You won't find the answers here. When it comes to jeans redditors are usually like "yo, you only want to spend 150 euro for jeans??? You can only buy some entry level jeans and no guarantee they last more than a few months. Go with 500 euro Japanese jeans". For real tho - Levis and Carhartt have treated me well so far. Levis have tons of different models tho - some are good, some are on the level of Zara and Bershka. One pair that was surprisingly good was Uniqlo's 100% cotton jeans. Not amazing but for the price they lasted plenty of time and always looked good.

  I’d say avoid anything too lace-heavy if durability is what you're after, that stuff always goes first. What’s worked for me is sticking to seamless microfiber styles, especially from brands like Uniqlo or Calvin Klein. They stay smooth under clothes and actually survive regular washes. Also, I’d be wary of trendy online-only brands, a lot of them look great in ads but don’t last. Stick with ones that have solid reviews and are easy to return if they don’t work out.

  Totally feel this :) I’ve been shifting toward pieces where the quality speaks through fit and fabric, not logos. For basics like tees and shirts, I’ve found that focusing on material and cut matters way more than the label. Sunspel and Lady White Co. make great plain tees, and Uniqlo U is surprisingly solid for the price. That said, the biggest game-changer for me was going made-to-measure for some core pieces, no branding at all, just clean lines and tailored fit. I work with a shop in NYC (Michael Andrews Bespoke), and everything feels elevated without saying a word. Once you find your silhouette, you realize how little you need the name on the tag.

  Cotton, linen, hemp, silk … there are a lot of summer fabric options made out of natural fibres! I buy most stuff secondhand and based on feel/quality, but Uniqlo do 100% cotton jumpers that I quite like. I like to buy from smaller designers if buying new, but TurnBlack and Sika Designs are two companies I can think of that ship internationally and use natural fibres (very different vibes!!) It’s not good for wool to be washed too often, so for it to be BIFL you want to wear an underlayer anyway!

  1. Edwin Jagger Double Edge Razor (10 Years). Any metal one would do but double edge is way better than Gillettes. 2. Oxo Carbon Steel Skillet (2 Years). I have other Cast Iron pans that are BIFL but my carbon steel gets the most use because it’s much lighter and easier to maneuver. 3. Stainless steel tea strainers (5ish years). I drink tea on a regular basis so having a tea strainer is a must. Any would do but I like my Oxo tea strainer the best. 4. Matcha Strainer/sifter from Japan. I bought one from Daiso and it broke in a few weeks. This made in Japan one from Ippodo looks like is gonna be BIFL. 5. Uniqlo U Crew Neck T-Shirts. Maybe not as BIFL as it is clothing at the end of the day but they’re thick, 100% cotton, and I still haven’t gotten rid of any of mine yet. Probably have close to 10 pairs of this t-shirt lmao.

  Yes, you're probably right, I only know people from Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens, in different situations, I don't have a complete image of the country. My most expensive clothing purchase ever was the denim jeans mentioned in the post, and it was hard to choose, 180$ but I use them like 3-4 times per week, and probably I'll keep doing the same for years, I hope that, so for me it was a good buy. Also I don't buy clothes usually and I try to buy something durable when it's necessary, for example for basic t-shirts I buy the Shake Wear ones for 7-8$ each one or the Uniqlo U in Spain for 15-16$. I think they are the best ones at that price range.

  A counter-point: I have a Uniqlo crew neck that’s going on strong for 10 years already I don’t own a dryer so I just hang-dry, and avoid buying as much polyester crap as much as possible. Sure I have no doubts that brands like Patagonia are long lasting (I own a few of their shorts and tees), but as long as you avoid synthetic stuff (elastane in small amounts is generally fine), your clothes can go far. It’s easy to fall into the “buy more quality > buying more quality AND quantity” trap really. I’ve been there.

  How to identify branded or unbranded clothes or fabrics that are not " fast fashion" and high quality, long lasting?

  As a layperson who loves clothes, the biggest thing for me is not considering fast fashion brands and spending a bit more for less. Fast fashion is a strategy, and isn’t the same as inexpensive clothing. Avoid Shein, Zara, and to a lesser extent H&M as their model is to crank out cheap copies of current trends. On the other hand, Uniqlo makes solid basics at lower price points because they do invest in fabrics and designs years in advance of the clothes hitting the market.  After that, it’s about learning what you like and experimenting to see where quality and your budget intersect. A lot of people will point to things like fabric weight or stitching, but if you aren’t a professional this is far harder than it sounds. So don’t sweat it too much.  If you aren’t a clothes person, then buy what you like and take care of it. Honestly the washer & dryer  are more big culprits for clothes falling apart. Heat and agitation break down garments.  Places like Walmart or Target may occasionally have decently durable pieces, but you’ll have better luck going upmarket. Places like Uniqlo and the Gap are great for basics. If you can wear J. Crew monitor the sales. Ralph Lauren makes good stuff. Find a piece you love and buy two of it instead of five crappy pieces you don’t enjoy.  Brands like Quince that bait consumers either cheap cashmere are crap. I wear Everlane shirts to the gym, but their stuff isn’t great so I only buy them on deep discount.  But if you are interested in clothes… Research brands or manufacturers. New brands like Buck Mason or Imogene + Willie are making great stuff, some in the U.S. However, country of origin isn’t as important as people think, because places like China and Vietnam have some incredible factories creating quality garments the U.S. can’t make today.  Secondhand & vintage are great sources to experiment and learn. High quality trousers are *expensive*. Most of my trousers new would retail $300-800, but I didn’t pay $100 for a single pair. And you can tell the difference in construction and materials, even as a layperson.

  For most of my casual and work casual stuff I honestly just get Uniqlo. I find their generally slim fit clothing cuts fit better for me. For dressier and more “dress to impress” clothing I go to Club Monaco. Pricey but has not disappointed. Both Uniqlo and Club Monaco will tailor to fit as well to make sure it looks clean on you.

  Your budget is your budget, so for sweaters you are looking at deep discounts or secondhand. You can get great sweaters (Made in England, Made in Scotland, Made in Italy) secondhand for $50 and under if you know your measurements and are patient. I have multiple American Giant hoodies (as others have mentioned) that are YEARS old. I love them. They are a bit over $100 now. If you want a decent $50 hoodie get one from Uniqlo. I have two. They are fine. I don't care if they get shit on them when I cook. Or find something cool secondhand. People get pretty pure about synthetics, but a little polyester can help durability. I have a 90/10 Champion sweatshirt that's great. Paid $40 for it secondhand.

  Commercial brands that are actually a bit worth the price?

  For t-shirts I can say this: \- Carhartt WIP - average, good option if discounted \- Carhartt workwear - even if worse than used to be K87s are probably my top 2. I have about 10 of them, each washed at least 50 times and mostly keep the color but the shape, collars etc are still as good as new. Great option for 25 eur \- Selected - they had a line of oversized, thick basic Ts (with pocket or not) for about 40 eur. They hold up great (including collar, seams, etc.), look great. Worth every cent \- Next - great look, quality, very thick etc. but.... collars are they worts I've ever seen. All wrinkled and stretched after 1st wash. You can't even wear shirts/hoodies over them as it's super annoying. Some models are also shorter than other brands. Was supposed to be a hidden gem but turned out to be dissapointment \- Uniqlo - good option for less thick Ts - they hold up nicely. Only some of them ad bit twisted seams after few washes (which always happen with lightweight Ts) \- Zoo york - bit short for, average quality. Not worth the price \- Dickies - got a bunch of lightweight ones. Some hold up decently, some started looking bad fast. I wouldn't pay more than 20 eur a piece \- Weekday - very good option. Hold up nice are are still inexpensive I also tried a bunch of popular zalando brands like Esprit, Pier One, Jack & Jones, United Colors of Benetton, Tom Tailor, Redefined Rebel, Zalando Essentials etc. and they're allright options to buy in multipacks cheap that you can wear couple times with shirt and then use for gym or whatever. Maybe except Tom Tailor which is total garbage For shorts I strongly recommend Uniqlo Linen Blend - by far best shorts I ever had For Hoodies I'm actually looking for a good option myself. Recently tried Volcom (used to be amazing, now total garbage), Carhartt WIP (very good quality but big pricey), Timberland (average), Uniqlo (good quality but they fit odd, and seams don't look that good), Dickies (thick, huge disappointment, loose color, shape, peel off like crazy). I need to buy sth and considering Carhartt workwear or Fallen zip hoodies but entirely like how they look. Patagonia, Armada, Arc'teryx don't have any nice zipped models. I heard some skateboard brands still make good quality hoodies (except Volcom for sure) so maybe I'll dry DC but I don't love the look either...

  Uniqlo basic tees and their selvage jeans are good everything else is sub par quality. Muji has better quality shirts. Charhartt wip are pricey but worth it. Work boots. If you can afford redwings those are amazing. If you cant, wolverines are good intro boots. Ive had a pair for 10 years and counting ive only had them repaired once. Watch I chose a seiko automatic not too expensive but reliable easy to maintain and relatively stylish. As someone that walks as a main mode of transportation there are NO BIFL sneakers/shoes so buy whatevers comfortable and just trust that youll need to replace them after a year (or 2 max) and since everyones foot is different youll need to find a shoe that you have tried before buying. Rain coat columbia is the best IMO. North face is literally the heaviest out of the rest. Patagonia is OK but theres something about it im not comfortable with. Backpack. Waxed canvas. Just remember to check the wax on it regularly. No specific brand in mind its more of the upkeep I have literally 20+ different insulated tumblers ive only used 2 on a daily basis. One is a standard 22oz silver one with no paint coating. Its all beat up but it has character and since it doesnt have paint my ocd doesnt get triggered. The second one is an old hydroflask back when they were just starting and not a money grab company they are now. Its an open top cap one for coffee. Lunch box, zojirushi lunch jar. Yes this is pricy but as someone who is well in his 30s and brings lunch to work this is awesome cause it keeps food hot for 8hrs (warm till 12hrs) ive had mine since college. This thing is pretty indestructible im pretty sure it would out live me. Also since im also part asian zojirushi rice cookers are built to be handed down generationally. Right now im out of what else to recommend but let me know if youre looking for a specific item ill let you know my thoughts on it. Yeah other people would recommend the best most expensive but on an actual practical level im a pretty safe bet to ask.

  If you need dress shirts, I've heard good things about Charles Tyrwhitt. Haven't gotten their shirts myself, though. I used to buy Brooks Brothers, but they've REALLY been enshittified. Uniqlo's OCBD shirts are pretty good for the price. For "going out" clothes, it really depends on your style. You can do a lot with a jacket, T-shirt, chinos, and leather boots.

  I feel one reason for deteriorating quality is the market need to keep prices relatively stable. I’ve been buying the same cable every couple years from Anker. The prices haven’t moved much but the quality has shifted. And that’s fair. 10 bucks in 2010 were very different from 10 bucks now. If they keep quality, the prices won’t be affordable. So I get it. That said: I’ll caveat my answer by saying here’s the brands that do high enough quality for the price they charge. Anker. Nike for socks. Uniqlo for their basic cotton T’s. MacBooks. Yeti.

  I agree. Uniqlo got their fast fashion items, true, but the 100% cotton stuff and heat tech are legit. I don’t know many shirts worn on the daily (outside of office) that can be true BIFL since depending on washing and usage it varies A LOT (I mean, none of my clothes have gotten bad lately, but my dad does A LOT of gardening and in summer he breaks at least 1-2 shirts in his fights with the bushes lmao).

  It also depends how you treat the clothes. I’ve had clothes (t shirts) from Uniqlo, Target, and H&M last for close to a decade. If I could judge, I’d say only H&M has gone down in fabric quality, but if you don’t go crazy in the wash on them I feel they’ve lasted quite some time. Of course, what you use the clothes for is important. Daily wear to office is very different than use in active sport, for example.

  Having lived in Europe, you need shoes that are good for cobbled streets and don’t cause blisters. Try getting some Muji or Uniqlo thermal socks and then boots that have a good rubber sole (won’t slip and grip the road) as well as something that is WATERPROOF. All the brands you mentioned won’t last a day in European winter rain or snow. Even Zara has better options.

  What counts as fast fashion?

  For me its less about labor and more about the types of materials used and the styles. If someone is constantly copying runway looks within 2-3week with polyester blends and plastic ridden clothes, thats fast fashion. Zara, Shien are the biggest offenders. H&M is actually fairly transparent with their supply chain, but that doesn't make them any less of a fast fashion brand IMO. Uniqlo doesn't have the best track record with labor, but I don't put them under fast fashion as they stick to the same core styles season over season with plenty of naturals and most of their money goes into fabric R&D. Thats not to say you should buy from them - if you want ethically sourced goods then don't > run in Taobao Taobao is just a marketplace, theres good sellers and bad sellers, but *generally* the reason sellers there are able to get items so cheap is because of the cheaper labor & materials. Thats not to say don't buy one, amazon has the same sellers, same quality, same bad enviornmental impact, its just not as sustainable as a metal hair clip. > getting my fabrics/sewing material/yarn off of Taobao due to the prices being reasonable and also because it’s the easiest thing to have access to due to their not being any DIY stores that sell materials nearby Nothing wrong with that, not fast fashion at all.   I don't, I feel the current nano puff has very odd stitching, loose threads everywhere, one seam outside the sleeve holding it together which failed on mine (similar to [https://www.reddit.com/r/BIFLfails/comments/1g1zuc7/patagonia\_jacket\_sleeve\_ripped\_open\_after\_less/](https://www.reddit.com/r/BIFLfails/comments/1g1zuc7/patagonia_jacket_sleeve_ripped_open_after_less/) ). At least their warranty was good, full credit, maybe it was a fluke - but I bought an R1 with that credit and it had issues with the zipper threading. Full refund that time, repair would take a few months. In comparison, my uniqlo ultralight down is in perfect shape, significantly cheaper, warmer, and just as packable (yes its down - but they have a synthetic "pufftech" line, haven't field tested it, feels just as good though). I also like alpha direct fleeces in lieu of the R1 - lots of companies make them for around the same price, pick whatever fits best. I much prefer the construction on RAB down jackets, norrona and OR for shell jackets, and for basics just uniqlo.

  Very Light Zip-up Hoodie

  Doesn't actually look heavy enough to me. The aircon in my office building in SG was set to ~16-17c and I had one of these: http://www.uniqlo.com/us/product/men-fleece-full-zip-long-sleeve-jacket-146201.html Some people had gloves and hats too. It's surreal. :)
