Military Surplus is underrated
As others have noted the US Navy pea coat is extremely warm. 100% wool. Lots of sizes on eBay listings. I missed mine from college days in western Kansas (1973) and just bought one off eBay (42L) for $35 plus $14 (these coats are heavy). I also have a 1965 US army field jacket for yard work and walking our dog.

Best winter jackets?
Any old US Navy pea coat. Preferably Kersey wool, but Melton wool is a close second. You may want a down parka for the extreme cold, but a pea coat is stylish and will last forever.
