  your math makes sense, but full grain leather jackets can easily last 8+ years with minimal care - they often last decades. the textile parts are the weak point though, especially elastic cuffs/waist. those might wear out in 5-7 years depending on use. the buffalo jackson ones you linked look decent. for that price, you could also check schott nyc or vanson - they're known for lasting forever. minimal care is fine: condition with leather cream once a year, store on a wide hanger, don't get it soaked. the leather will outlast the textiles, but you can often get those replaced by a tailor.

  Vanson is what you want for leather. Not cheap, not crazy expensive either. Just really high quality leather made to last a lifetime and slide down pavement if you want.

  It is impossible to get a good quality leather jacket for under $500 new. Even around 500 I would be very suspicious. Also, never buy a leather jacket from a fashion brand (ASOS, Banana Republic, Zara, etc). Their leather is always paper thin and usually not actually leather (I wouldn’t consider “genuine leather” to be real leather). Your best bet if you want to spend under $500 I’d look for used/vintage from brands like Schott, Aero Leathers, Vanson, or something similar. Make sure it specifies the leather type (cowhide, goat, horsehide, etc.). Also, avoid Wilson leather jackets, they were the first mass-market leather jacket brand in the US and are low quality.

  $99 “leather” jackets are going to be bonded leather most likely which is just leather scraps glued and sanded together. The overall stitching will be poorer and the pattern won’t be as good. For $1200, you could get a nice high quality leather jacket that uses full grain leather, quality hardware and stitching and good patterns. If youree on a budget I would look at vanson or used Schott

If you want something that will last decades, look for full-grain or top-grain leather, since those are the most durable. Steer clear of “genuine leather” if you can , it’s usually lower quality and won’t hold up the same way. For brands, you can check out Schott, Vanson, Aero Leathers, or Lewis Leathers if you want heritage-level quality. If you’re looking for something more affordable but still solid, smaller makers like ZippiLeather do custom jackets using high-quality hides, so you can get a great fit and construction without paying big heritage-brand prices. The key is proper care , condition it every so often, keep it dry when possible, and it’ll easily become your own 20-year jacket.

  You mean the competition weight leather? It just means the leather's outer surface has been sanded down a bit to make it more consistent. It has less natural texture but that's it. It's no weaker than if it were full grain, not at the thickness they use. Go by whether you like the material's feel and look. It's unique among all the motorcycle jackets I've tried, and one of the few which feels inherently protective. Alternatively, just ask for a different leather. They have deer skin, which is great stuff. They might also source you a unique leather if they don't have something comparable to what you want, but I don't know how likely that is. I went to their factory once, and they had a one off jacket with an amazingly soft, thick feeling leather they said they used only for that one jacket. Not a line of jackets, just the one example of the jacket they had on hand. They said it wasn't something they normally work with, it was a special request, which didn't work out because the customer rejected it. I would have got that jacket if it had fit.

  Top grain and full grain are pretty much the same thing. They are both the top layer of split leather. Full grain has not been sanded and top grain has so it will have an even finish. I’ve owned Vanson gear. It’s really nice stuff,

  Vanson makes a good product. Right down the road from me actually. The local club has tours and meets at the factory often. That said, I got a used Alpinestars GPplusR or whatever it's called for a steal on marketplace. It's a very nice jacket but it has textile panels where it doesn't need the protection so that it stretches and is comfortable.
