  What signs do you look for to tell if something will actually last years?

  Pay attention to the details….made with good materials, joints/seems/welds should all be impeccably well done, packaging should be sufficient and thoughtfully designed, etc. I write this staring at a pair of Italian made Vasque hiking boots I bought almost 30 years ago.

  BIFL *women's* winter boots, waterproof, arch support, please

  I totally feel your frustration with the women's vs mens boot quality difference, it's maddening how often this happens. For New England winters with your specific needs, I'd suggest looking at Danner women's Mountain Light or Mountain 600 boots - they're built with the same quality standards as their men's versions and have excellent arch support without any faux fur nonsense. The full grain leather holds up incredibly well to winter conditions and they're resoleable which makes them truly BIFL. Another option worth considering is Vasque women's St. Elias or Snowburban boots, both have solid arch support and come in narrow widths if that helps with the wobble issue you had with Keene. Since you mentioned overpronation support specifically, you might also want to look into custom orthotics regardless of which boot you choose - I actually went through IAMBIC (they do custom fitted shoes and boots) for my foot issues and the difference in support was incredible, though they might be outside your timeline since custom work takes longer. For immediate options that should work well, I'd also check out Merrell Thermo boots or Salomon women's winter hiking boots, both brands tend to have consistent quality between mens and womens versions and good arch support built in.

  Asolo is garbage and their customer service sucks donkey d!ck; what's my next boot brand?

  I have a pair of vasque sundowners. Over 35 years old. No problems except for scuffed leather . Vibram soles don’t disintegrate (weightier than pu though) making way more reliable for the money.

  I have had 2 pairs of Vasque Sundowners last about 20 years. Honestly bulletproof. Soles went full flat no tread before the uppers or lacing ever showed a problem.

  What’s one item you bought that way outperformed its price?

  Vasque Sundowner Hiking Boots. I paid $99 for them in the late 90's. Still going strong. I don't use them all the time, but they are super comfy and I can't imagine ever needing to by another pair. I did have to glue the soles a few years ago and replace shoelaces a few times but overall great purchase.

  Non-popular sneakers which will last at least couple of years

  I’m still using a pair of Vasque that I night back in 2010s somewhere.   I guess their shoes being so sturdy put them out of business.

  Best hiking boots for men - Suggestions needed.

  My favorites are Vasque and Oboz. Have gone through many pairs of Keen, Merrel, Soloman, North Face etc over the years. Every pair of Keen boots that I have owned has fallen apart faster than any other brand. It’s a shame because I like the fit of Keen. Vasque is going or has gone out of production but this means you can find some great deals on their boots right now.

  Merrel Moab 3s are tough as nails

  Not exactly, and nothing that consistently holds up the way Merrell used to - across different lines and styles. That said, I have found that a combination of different brands will fill certain voids, like Teva for water shoes, sporty sandals and insulated slipper-shoes; Ecco and Vionic for casual/street shoes; Dansko and Earth Shoes for more fancy work pumps, etc. For hiking and trail scrambling (I used to run, now I scramble, lol), I rely on old Merrells and occasionally a truly ancient pair of Vasque leather boots that have been re-soled a few times.

  Hiking shoes - all my footwear gets a worn out heel from the inside and I am desperate to find something that lasts.

  Columbia makes the worst footwear. I won’t let my scouts / explaining how many pairs of Columbia I have seen fail on back country, multi-day hikes. I love the Columbia brand for clothes…. Just not boots! Most of the boots sold at REI has been well vetted… Lowe and Vasque are the two that feet my wide feet 👣
