Can we chill with the gatekeeping…
It's not a complicated issue. Look at BIFL in terms of the expected, or what should be the expected lifespan of a product. One item that's a good example is blue jeans. Most companies are either no longer making or are making limited versions of denim pants. Now they use blue stretch fabric and make false claims that they are blue jeans. It's fair to ask what companies are still making blue jeans. If the gate keepers keep whining, we will be left with no choice but to ask which booger picker or back scratcher is BIFL. The same with pet rocks or stone mortar and pestle. Whatever little items that will last for several lifetimes. Oh, BTW, Victoria cast iron is nicer than Lodge. It's embarrassing that they can manufacture better quality cast iron pans in Columbia and sell them for less than Lodge pans cost. Come on Lodge, step up your game. Make American cast iron great again.

What frying pans are we buying? Tired of nonstick pans that only last 6 months.
Between the two of you guys this is the dream cookware set I have come up with for my house too. All clad pots with a big flat bottomed “everyday pan”, a set of 3 Lodge skillets and a two burner griddle, Le Creuset Dutch oven and braiser, Victoria comal, carbon steel wok and a “cheap” All-clad nonstick for my kid to cook her eggs on. We have lots of cookware but we cook at home daily. I feel like this variety covers almost all the bases and I’m able to make just about everything with the carefully chosen pieces I have. Hopefully I won’t have to replace any of them ever again except for the single egg pan.

Your BIFL item from third world and developing countries?
I have a cast iron tortilla press from Columbia (Victoria brand I think?), I use it pretty regularly. I bought it years ago when I was catering my sister's wedding, I think I made over 800 tacos that day.

What brand / type of pots & pans are worth investing in as a young adult?
Victoria cast iron is nice. Better than Lidge and you can often find it for good prices at Macy's and Amazon. You might want to try carbon steel sauté pans. Otherwise Allclad is a popular choice.
