Huh. This is so odd. I have a 6300 (which is identical to a 5200 except that it has three pre-sets), and it gets things so incredibly smooth. I tried a lesser blender after loosing the 6300 during a break-up, and hated it and eventually got myself another 6300. (I missed the blender a lot more than the boyfriend!) I wonder if you got a lemon or something?

I had a Blendtec and it was garbage. It’s how I ended up on the r/Vitamix forum. It couldn’t blend the seeds of any fruit at all. Had a lot of trouble with simple blends. Just absolute garbage.

Need BIFL Recommendations as a Graduation Present!
You have some sweet parents. A few thoughts: don't expect breville to last. It's nice initially, but designed to break (eg. my breville food processor died in 2 years because of capacitors designed to fail. In contrast robot coupes and vitamixes last decades with abuse). I can think of a few excellent presents depending on what category: kitchen: a good knife, a good Dutch oven (either really old cast iron, or staub/le creuset). For coffee, I like a good grinder or a travel French press. Woodworking: some really great chisels, or a nice hand Plane. If you're more a utility woodworker, an excellent block plane. Measuring/marking tools are nice too. Lee Valley and Lie Nielson have heirloom quality western woodworking tools. Covington and sons is my recommendation for Japanese woodworking. Not sure about sewing or painting, as IMHO those are very into disposables. Maybe a PB Swiss screwdriver? They make BIFL tools, and some of the very best bits on the market (but are very expensive). I have my eye on the precision stubby for computer stuff.

As someone who didn’t want to spend the price on a vitamix but kept killing other blenders (ninja). I will say that I LOVE my vitamix for certain things, and hate it for others. If you are making a sauce for something and want it to be completely homogenous and smooth, vitamix all the way. We are dairy free and often make sauces with root vegetables and nuts. And I don’t even have to soak the nuts before blending. Just throw them in and it does such a good job that it’s fully smooth, no grit whatsoever. However, I much preferred my ninja when it comes to making THICCK smoothie bowls. Vitamix can, but you have to fight with it a bit and use the tamper and it just makes awful noise 😂 the ninja I just turned it on and it did its thing. Also, I think the ninja did better with smaller amounts in the blender. But again, the vitamix is worlds better when it comes to smoothness, especially with harder ingredients. So if that’s a thing that matters to you 🤷♀️

It’s just stubbornness bc he’s always wanted a vitamix, and I got my blendtec used for $50 bucks - like I’m not getting rid of a perfectly-working blendtec I got for $50, those deals don’t come around every day!! Haha. I do like that mine has a lot of pre-set modes that his doesn’t.

Partner has a vitamix, I have a blendtec. When we moved in together, they’re the only “duplicate” item where we each kept our version. They both get used a LOT as we’re avid cooks and bakers, so we felt justified in making cabinet space for both!

What's one kitchen appliance you've owned for 10+ years that still works perfectly?
**Vitamix blender 5200** bought in 2007 and it still runs great. have bought the cheap replacement part, drive socket, (under $10) twice over the years. Super easy to replace it. This thing is a work horse and works as well as new. It made it through teenagers figuring out how to use it and abuse it. Since then I’ve bought the grain pitcher and still use it too. Never had to replace another thing on this tank and imagine I’ll have it for years to come.

Depends on if they get used -- and how often. For me, the "worth it" appliances are: * Robot Coupe R2 Dice with all the attachments (there are two kinds of food processors -- Robot Coupe and "less than.") * BlendTec blender * Robot Coupe or Vitamix stick blender (big price difference here -- the Robot Coupe is superior, but at a hefty price increase) * Kitchenaid (or better yet Hobart) stand mixer with at least the grinder attachment if not others * PolyScience Sous-Vide pro * MoccaMaster and LaPavoni coffee makers * Zojirushi or Cuckoo rice cookers My coffee grinder is no longer made. So I bought a couple burr replacements. It is unlikely to ever die.

My go tos: -digital scale. Get the combo cord/battery kind -portioning scoops. Volrath makes a burly ambidextrous one that will last for generations. The numbered size is how many scoops go into a quart, so a #16 is 2oz (and perfect cookie size, imo) -Microplane. The flat, no handle one is the easiest to clean -Mandoline. I like my Japanese style benriner. They come preprogrammed with a taste for human flesh, so be respectful and be careful -blender. Kitchenaid and vitamizx are fantastic home versions that look nice, but I swear by my waring bar blender. Two speeds, ugly, but an absolute beast. -stacking bowls. I'd would recommend metal, as there's no chance of chips and knicks and whatnot, and they're durable af -Silicone spatulas. Softer they are, the quicker they tear, so get the firm ones. Kitchen supply stores like cash and carry have the red handled ones that are durable af, but they will stain if you use a lot of spices. Worth it Unless you're using a gadget several times a week, stick with more universal tools; kitchens infrequently have space for all the bits and bobs that end up getting used for one project and then forgotten about. Mono-taskers, as Alton Brown likes to call them,aren't the handy solutions they're billed as, and as long as you have a good knife, a good pot and skillet, and a few essentials, you're golden

Until my daughter moved in for a little while during the pandemic and then when she moved back out again, she took it with her. 🤣 But seriously, I got it for grinding wheat berries into flour and it was great for that. But during the pandemic, local stores stopped carrying wheat berries, but my daughter ramped up her smoothie game, so it's fair that she took it. Last I saw, the Vitamix was still going strong, which is more than I can say for any other blender I've ever owned.

I’m a kitchen enthusiast who has spent 20 years upgrading my kitchen tools. - All-clad Tri ply stainless steel. - Staub or Le Creuset cast iron Dutch ovens - Cast iron fry pan (keep it well seasoned and it will eventually become just as nonstick as a nonstick frypan. Better yet buy a vintage one with a smooth interior) - Shun or Global chef’s knife and paring knife - fiesta ware dinnerware, or simple white Corelle - cast iron griddle pan that you can place over two eyes on your stove, keep it seasoned for non-stick goodness - electric appliances will eventually wear out, but Breville small appliances are very well made and long lasting. - Norwex microfiber cloths - kitchen aid stand mixer - heavy gauge baking sheets and jelly pans - go to a restaurant supply store - Rubbermaid plastic containers (from restaurant supply store) - vitamix blender - invest in upgrading your kitchen cabinetry with pull out drawers and sliding shelves to maximize space and organization.

You are not going to lose weight drinking apple juice my friend, nor will a masticating juicer produce clear apple juice. A decent blender would be more versatile. Ninja, Vitamix etc. Then you can throw in whole fruit and vegetables and benefit from the fibre, make smooth vegetable soups etc. FYI pre-cutting fruit and vegetables helps to make them more accessible and increases the amounts you are likely to eat.

Juicing removes a plant's fiber, which is good for digestion and helps you feel full. As a result juice is closer to sugar water. I would recommend making smoothies instead, and vitamix is commonly recommended here! You can start with smoothies with more liquid or more milk, to get closer to the consistency of juice.

that’s extremely upsetting. our vitamix is 10+ years old and i’ve had a problem once with it where the switch stopped working. I was able to open it up and reattach some wires that had come loose and that was maybe 3 years ago. it’s worked great ever since. making stuff thats supposed to be simple extremely complicated makes zero sense to me!! why would a vitamix need a chip?!

Currently eying this vitamix on FB marketplace.
When we moved to Long Island we didn’t expect to stay there for a year, so I didn’t bring my vitamix with us. After 3 months I couldn’t not have a vitamix, so I bought a used one that was probably 20 years old by then (the one with the stainless steel container and stainless steel body if memory serves me well), it worked beautifully and I left it to my local friends. I’m sure it is still going strong.

I love my Vitamix, but bought a Blendtec on Facebook marketplace. That thing is a beast. Doesn't heat up as much as Vitamix, easier to clean the container, and fits under my cabinets. I love them both , but for different reasons. Keep a lookout for either on refurb lists or marketplace.

My mom goes through blenders faster than a cat knocking things off a shelf. But seriously, She uses her blender daily. And every year she needed a new one .. until I bought her a Vitamix in 2017. I did not disclose how much I paid for it, just told her, this here, is THE blender of all Blenders. When I tell you this woman loves her Vitamix Blender! Going on 8 years now and it works beautifully. She has 2 containers one for sweets and one for spicy (salsa-making). She raves about it to anyone that will listen. I personally got the Ninja when I first married. HATED IT! The blades while a neat concept sucked! Green smoothies were chunky, cleaning it was a PITA, I cut myself on those stupid blades so many times while cleaning it. a year later got me a Vitamix, haven't looked back since. My Vitamix is now 10 years old. Do it! You won't regret it.

Vitamix is the answer for most people. Their home blenders have motors rated at 2hp and 2.2hp. Their commercial blenders have motors ranging from 2.3 to 4.2 horse power. Vitamix commercial blenders range in price from $500 to $1,500. If you have the money for 4.2hp, I imagine it can blend as much ice as you want for hours at a time.

Omg—metrics, too!! I took advantage of a great sale 8 years ago and never looked back! I do so much with it, including grinding nut butters with that smaller scraper jar. It’s so well-built, and far more quiet than my bestie’s top-of-the-line Vitamix. Good to know the refurbs are strong—thinking to get another for my summer spot!

Honestly, it's a fine blender. But in hindsight I would just prefer a Vitamix as of the issues I have and the fact that I really don't like the crappy push button operation of it vs the analog dial on the Vitamix. I'd also like the tamper for the Vita. And FWIW - the "programs" on the Blendtec are completely useless for me and I just manually press the up and down buttons (where I'd rather have a dial).

My mom was a regular blender-killer, until she got the Vitamix which then outlived her. It will shut itself off to avoid overheating, so if you push it too hard, it won't break but will interrupt your smoothie making.

I’d watch out for Blendtec. Their consumer ones don’t measure up to their commercial ones. My parents burned out the motor on theirs after a few years of infrequent use. Mainly making smoothies. Go for Vitamix

Blendtec has a digital screen with buttons. Vitamix has a knob in a potentiometer. I have encountered broken vita mixes and broken blendtecs. Vitamixes are significantly easier and cheaper to repair.

Bosch it seems is slipping now in the mid 2020’s. Depending on service availability, I don’t think there is a ‘Just get X’ for dishwashers currently. Definitely Vitamix for blenders, but I’d also say the 5200 with the tall carafe is the correct one.

I see Vitamix blender at estate sales all the time — along with other BIFL items like kitchen aid mixers, Pyrex, corningware, lodge etc. There’s no need to buy that stuff new.

Everyone always recommends Vitamix and also blendtec which is what I have, and have been very happy with it for 5 years now. I use it daily to blend all sorts of things and it still works really well

Vitamix is great. We make lots of frozen fruit smoothies in ours. We've had it for....15 years? I think we've had to replace the canister, because we accidentally turned on the blender with something inside and the blades turned it so hard they cracked the original plastic canister. But that's user error! We've since replaced it with a steel canister.

As an owner of a blendtec consumer blender, I will say I think there’s a bigger gap between the consumer and commercial version for blendtec vs vitamix. My sisters vitamix seems bulletproof, whereas I’ve already burned a motor on my blendtec, and we don’t even use it much. The commercial versions of the blendtec seems like an entirely different product class.

My moms Vitamix is 18 yrs old and still going strong. The only thing she’s replaced are the blades. And she’s a daily use sort of person. I got one for myself and so far no complaints. I got the one that fits under the counter and I love it.

After burning through a few consumer ones, went with a [commercial one](https://www.webstaurantstore.com/avamix-bx2000v-3-1-2-hp-commercial-blender-with-toggle-control-adjustable-speed-and-64-oz-polycarbonate-container) . Things a tank. After my experience with Ninja (crappy blender shipped with really sharp blades to game reviews), I've avoided all the trendy ones. No reason to doubt all the Vitamix fans here, but restaurant supply isn't a bad way to go.

The Blendtec's jar is fairly straight walled.....the Vitamix jar is more tapered. The difference leads to the Blendtec needing to run at higher speeds which adds more air causin frothy, nearly carbonated textures. Vitamix has a tamper, Blendtec doesn't. As a result, of jar design and no tamper....air pockets form which can't be popped without stopping the machine or risking cutting up a wooden spoon (while it's running). The Blendtec spatula is awesome, as it's nut grinder mill thing for making batches of pesto or peanut butter.....but it's an add on.

I have a Blendtech, and although it is better than your average blender, I regret not getting a Vitamix. The on off switch in the back is broken and I'll sometimes get some strange smell from the gear where the cannister meets the base. Overall, it's ok, I wish I would have gone with the old reliable rather than the new guy.

Just look at Jamba Juice and other smoothie stores and you’ll see that most if not all use VitaMix blenders. They are designed for commercial use, their blenders are workhorses of the blender industry.

Making small batches with a Nutribullet is quicker and better? How would making batches with a significantly less powerful, single serving blender be quicker and better? Nutribullets are more expensive in the long run. They aren’t very durable, have a fraction of a warranty, and are far less serviceable. I’ve been through two of them with once a day average use. My Vitamix is an older model my parents gave me that gets used two to three times a day. They bought it in the 90s and it’s still going strong. The only issue it has had so far was with the speed potentiometer. That was an easy fix by simply taking it out and cleaning the contacts. My Vitamix model was discontinued about 18 years ago which was 5 years before the first NB model came out. Replacement parts are still available for my VM. The same can’t be said for the early NB blenders. I found the VM easier to clean. A quick rinse then fill halfway with warm water and a drop or two of dish soap followed by throwing it on the blender worked well for me.

Vitamix. But my Nutribullet is also going strong after 4 years and i use it alot more than the Vitmix bc it's smaller. Tip is NOT to overfill and make things in batches. that said, I have an Osterizer blender from the late 60s/early 70s in lovely avocado green that still works just fine, won't crush ice as well as the newer high-speed blenders however.

I used my Vitamix to blend ice cubes, banana and other things for smoothies for ten years before replacing the blades. I still have it 10+ years after that. Works great. They're expensive, but worth it.

DO YOUR DUE DILIGENCE I’ve had mine for almost a decade and it blends as perfect as the day I got it. r/vitamix can help You have to load them as instructed and engage the motor specifically in the manner it’s designed for. There’s different models, the 5200 is tried and true. Read the booklet that comes with. If you want to save a few bucks, wait till Black Friday

I have a Vitamix. They make it very clear that you need to load them and engage the motor in a very specific way so as to get optimal usage from the motor without burning it out. Some people either ignore or don’t bother to do the research. If you just crank it up, yeah, it’s a very powerful motor, you can burn it out

Well I bought a Vitamix in Feb. have used it a minimum of 1-2 times a day since then and it’s still awesome! Unrelated to the blender I had an issue with a missing part in a box and had to call customer service. They are freaking amazing!!

Vitamix. There's a lot of things where "just get the X" is annoying and leaves out a lot of quality stuff, and ignores a potential lack of quality on the "x" mentioned. But Vitamix (as of 2025 so far at least) is one of the few "just get the vitamix" answers worth giving. Yeah there are other options but the vitamix is such a solid option I'm just going to go with it. I've had mine for a while, haven't abused it much but have used it a lot.

I have a vitamix from 2011 I use every day. The motor is as good as new. I needed one new canister during the warranty period, then I needed a second so I bought a stainless steel one and it's leaps and bounds better than the plastic. So I'd recommend a vitamin and suggest you spring for the steel canister from the get go.

This is the answer. I’ve used my vitamin nearly daily for the last 12 years. I’ve never mad issues with the motor, but I’ve replaced the pitcher and several of the components once or twice. Replacement parts are available on the website and easy to swap.

Have you considered user error? I worked at a smoothie shop with Vitamix blenders and my boss drilled it into our heads that we needed a mix of frozen, non frozen, and liquid or else we’d burn up the blenders. We’d also take the blenders off the base about halfway through and give them a good shake.

I picked up a refurb last year, Venturist, I believe. I use it a couple times a week and still looks and works flawlessly, though a year is hardly a timescale to determine BIFL. Buddy of mine had one for 15 years used nearly daily. He killed it trying to make a full kilo of peanut butter all at once.

I bought my Vitamix as a refurbished unit in 2017, and it's still in flawless condition. I used it a few times a week and it's never so much as faltered. I'm a huge fan of refurbished items direct from the manufacturer, but also I think i've had good luck with refurbished stuff in general - my dyson big ball animal vacuum was a refurbished unit i bought in 2015 and it's lived through 3 cats (2 long hair) a bunny, 2 corgis and a mastiff mix that sheds more than all the other pets combined.

Vitamix is the lobster of counter too machinery. It'll live forever. It'll outlive your fridge, your sink, your house, civilization itself, and still be grinding away. BUT... I just don't think it's a the best ever blender. It's a challenge to get a smooth blend fast and it can heat up a lot. We have a food processor that may not last as long, but it performs better (ex: Vitamix hummus: difficult and still a smidge lumpy at the end. Food processor/blender hummus: smooth and consistent faster, no heating up). This is just my experience-based opinion.

I think the standard is Vitamix but we have had great luck with our Ninja’s. We had one last 10 years and it only died bc someone spilled something sticky into the side vents and I assume it went into the motor. Our second ninja is now 4 years old and doing great!

I worked in a cafe that had both Vitamix and Blentec before switching to fully Blentec. Both are indestructible, but the Vitamix would need manual agitation for thick or icy drinks, where as the blendtec was awesome for everything. Way better at handing icy drinks. We also got rid of a dedicated milkshake maker and started using it for thick shakes, something a Vitamix would choke on. The deal sealer was the sound cover. It makes an enormous difference with icy drinks. Still loud, but not I can’t hear a damn thing while it’s running loud.

Blendtec is the super high end answer if you're looking to blend up literally anything. Vitamix is an industry workhouse, but do not put your carafe in the dishwasher or let it soak for an extended period of time. The 5200 series has been used in professional kitchens for DECADES. Their customer service is fantastic should any issues arise as well

I have had the following for years if not decades, and have never regretted the price: All Clad pans, Vitamix, Portmeirion plates and ramekins (dishwasher, fridge, freezer and oven safe; they have literally been dropped on wood floors and been totally fine), Kyocera ceramic knives, Wüstof 10 inch chef's knife, Vollrath Wear-Ever Cookie Sheet Pans, Peugeot pepper mill (solid as a rock), Kitchenaid mixer, Hamilton Beach Heavy Duty food processor, Williams Sonoma gold pans, all metal apple slicer, all-metal juicer, all metal Microplane, metal bowl set, 10 piece glass bowl set, metal whisk, set of 3 plain wooden spoons, wooden cutting boards, all silicone spatulas (handle coated as well) Basically, if you find a kitchen tool that has no plastic anywhere, and is made of good quality metal, get it. Also refer to America's Test Kitchen recommendations, as they really put kitchen tools to the test. Also, I almost hate to say it, but my Tesla Model 3 has lasted 8 years now, and my only maintenance needed has been to replace the air filter, windshield washing fluid, and tires. Also, with every SW update, the car gets better/more features. Not buy for life, but buy for a decade at least. I may not stay with Tesla in the future, but I will be staying with electric cars, for the super low cost of maintenance and acceleration alone.

I had Miyabi, Henckels, all kinds of fancy pants $500 knives. This $26 knife beats the shit out of them. Sharp, strong, throw that bitch in the dishwasher… sharpens to a razors edge and holds it. 5 years old, still like new. It’s also super thick, so you can abuse it pry bones then go finely chop garnish. I love this goddamn thing. Bonavita Coffee maker - 12 years old works perfect. Outdoors/sports/hobbies: Tikka rifle - will go to my grandkids. TRX - training system - nylon webbing - no reason for it not to last forever Pentax 645 Medium Format lenses. I’ve been using them across camera systems for decades now. Still like new, so smooth and beautiul. Got them new old stock from Japan 20 years ago. Unbelievably cheap at the time. Like $75 a lens. I have 4-5. You can adapt them these days to any mirrorless camera. Yep — and definitely yes to epoxy. Vitamix says never store liquid in it and to wash/dry right after use, or the seal breaks down. Kind of ridiculous for a “self-heating” blender. I love mine, but the container design is a joke.

We are in the US. Sorry you’re dealing with this, We went through this a couple years ago. Pans: all clad copper core. Love them. Very nice upgrade from our old pans. Other kitchen items we splurged on: breville espresso machine and toaster, vitamix immersion blender, vitamix blender, wusthof knives Mattress: big fig king mattress with adjustable base. Most comfortable bed we have ever had. Adjustable base is amazing.

What are some of the best products/brands you love splurging on?
Quality blender is up there for me too, I am a Blendtec guy but Blendec or Vitamix, either way, if you use a blender regularly it makes a huge difference. I also have the Dyson hair dryer, I got a deal on one of the refurbished models with a coupon, seemed like a ridiculous purchase but that thing is really good. Doubly ridiculous because I really only have a beard to blowdry but a damp neck is not a good thing if you didn't know. Since you mentioned Dyson - Their vacuums are pretty good but in the end I'm not a huge fan, I think bagless is inferior, but a great vacuum is a real convenience, not a fun one but it makes life easier. I recently bought a Sebo D4 and that thing is next-level. Zojirush water boiler/dispenser. I like electric kettles but in the USA with our 120VAC they're slow. The Zojirushi dispensers will hold water at 208º and they last forever. Older models had gaskets that required occasional replacement but they sell the parts, my current one with the double-wall design has been on pretty much for ten years straight except when I unplug it to go on vacation. Great convenience appliance for coffee and tea lovers, especially for someone who does a French press every morning. Great kitchen tools, knives, cookware, utensils. They're all just hunks of metal in the end so anything good quality is buy it for life. Apple electronics, although laptops, phones, etc. can't really be BIFL. Porsche car - Not necessarily the cheapest to keep for life but they claim 70% of the cars they've made are still on the road. Not brand-specific but decent home audio, especially a 5.1 or better surround setup for movie and TV. Even YouTube documentaries sound so much better, you get spoiled by great audio, I find even narration lacks impact and presence when I'm listening to a podcast through earbuds vs. watching on my surround system. And while audiophilia gets people spending ridiculous amounts of money with the proliferation of cheap consumer electronics the last few decades you don't have to spend much to get a way better experience. Bicycle stuff, but not really brand specific and I don't go as crazy as a lot of enthusiasts, but don't mind spending on good bikes, good gear and good accessories. Ekornes Stressless furniture - very comfortable to me, IMO even most expensive furniture isn't really comfortable or ergonomic, a lot of it is plush, superficially comfortable but not supportive and wrecks your neck and back if you spend a lot of time in it. Similarly, Herman Miller Aerons for office duty. Travelpro luggage - most of their lines aren't expensive enough to be a real splurge, but very nice and durable, way better than cheap luggage some of which seems to be single-use these days.

They won’t - it would be too unsafe from how insanely fast they go. I have the stainless steel cup for my vitamix and love it but I wish the shape was more like the plastic ones, as the vortex isn’t quite the same, and you often do have to use the plastic smusher.

Recently had my cheapo modern blender die and wanted something more BIFL. Hopped on the ol' eBay to get it. Behold, the Osterizer 847 from 1972! What can I say? I'm a sucker for avocado green. Made sure the blades were sharp enough and have been making smoothies in my kitchen since no problem.
My 94 year old mother still has her Osterizer from 1972 and it gets the job done for the most part. I had to buy my wife a $400 Vitamix a few years ago because her everything-but-the-sink breakfast smoothies was killing the modern cheapos annually.

Which is the best blender amongst them?
I've been using this [Vitamix](https://x.com/IpkizzzGroup/status/1941594366004347296) blender for a month now and it's much better than I expected. It's lightweight, easy to clean, and doesn't leave anything stuck to the bottom. It's much quieter than my previous one, and all of my smoothie ingredients go into the glass—nothing is left over. The best part is that I don't have to deal with sharp blades when cleaning or disassembling it, unlike my previous blenders.

I have the first model Braun hand stick blender, maybe early 90s? It still works! Several years ago I thought for sure it would break, it has a small crack, so I went on ebay and set alerts and all that to snag a good one and finally snagged one, never used, still in its box!! I haven’t had to pull it out yet, maybe I didn’t need it. I can’t understand why this thing won’t break, I’ve been wanting a new one my whole life 😂 After my old hand mixer gave out, which belonged to my mother from the 70s, I bought a Kitchenaid, it was a piece of crap and the mixers stripped out of the holders. I read reviews until I was exhausted and turned to eBay, set alerts, and sniped a professional Sunbeam hand mixer, looks almost exactly like my mom’s, only it is heavier and has a thicker cord. I’m not sure what year it is, it definitely looks like a 70s mixed someone put away and never used. I’ve used it for several years, it is a work horse, I also feel this is never going to break. I have my Vitamix, I think I bought it before 2010, maybe 2008? I got it at a fair, it had an extra pitcher for grains, but I used that for liquids just fine after the first tall pitcher finally leaked. I’ve since bought a stainless steel pitcher at Costco when they were there doing a demo. The salesperson said it would fit my old model, and it does, I love it. I think my old Vitamix could maybe grind concrete and not break. After my old Maytag washer broke after 18 years (it was after whirlpool took over, somehow it wasn’t a bad washer), I finally got a Speed Queen set. People say they are expensive, well, how many washers are you going to buy while this thing you could have had would live on and on. It’s going to outlive me, and that’s fine, it will be inherited and stay with the family.

My grandfather’s cutco knives. They’ve got to be 60 years old now? I don’t even get them sharpened, and I use them every single day. 3. My cutco garden pruners. I was going through crap pairs all the time. Dull, breaking, etc. These things are so durable. I love them more than anyone should love garden pruners. 😂 4. My aunt’s gold hoop earrings. Pioneer 10mm lever lifting belt - I think I am at 8 years with the thing and it is as good now as it was the day I bought it (better even, its broken in). I will not squat or deadlift without it. I will NEVER use another brand, If these guys ever go out of business I am going to buy an extra in my size and one a size up or a size down from my size so I always have one. They released a better lever (or so I hear, it looks like it can be more finely adjusted) and while I want it, I literally have a perfectly fine belt that looks like it will never die. The only way I would get the new one is if I lose enough weight/ gain enough weight to need a different size (slim/fat chance that will happen any time soon). Red Wing Iron Rangers - No other boot or shoe has lasted me this long, and it is not close. Customer service is outstanding and the only shop that has ever made me feel like they cared about me after I have spent money. I bring the boots in once or twice a year and they clean them up, oil them, and put on new laces for free, last time they even replaced all the rivets for free. When the sole finally goes I will have them re-sole it, and while that will cost it will be no where near what I would have paid for anything comparable. These boots have saved me money in the long run, which is saying a lot given they are like over $300. Rogue Gym Equiptment - I have a RML-490c rack, an Ohio Bar, a stainless steel power bar, some adjustable dumbbells, a sandbag, and all of it is top notch. I went with "buy once cry once" so I do not know how other stuff stacks up, its mostly steel after all, but Rogue has been wonderful and looks very nice. Titan is probably also great, but I haven't bought yet. Vitamix - After burning through three magic/nutri/whatevername bullets in a year I found a Vitamix on market place, and it just goes and goes and goes. I really could blend anything. I thought it was a little extra at first, because it was more than I had spent on any other counter top appliance, even used, but it is well worth it. It sure was less than the three broken blender combined. Steelcase Leap 2 desk chair - I got this chair used about 6 months after covid turned my workplace into work form home. It is just as good as the day I bought it. Watched some videos on how to properly personalize and adjust it and it is great. Well worth the spend. Honorable mentions: Bedrock Sandals. I lost my first pair during a float, but they were two years old and still going strong. My brother in law has had his for about twice that time and has had them resoled by the company at a decent price. Again, I tear through shoes, so two years out of that first pair is remarkable for sandals. Second pair is only a couple of months old, but they feel just as good. I really love all of my modular synths. Every time I have reached out to a maker for support they have replied so quickly and with such a good attitude. Make Noise, Joranalogue, Intellijel, Doepfer, NerdSEQ (seemingly one person, hello Thomas), and Erica Synths. Special shoutout to Erica Synths who saw that I could not get a piece to a shop and just sent me the exact part number to order so I could fix it myself. Special shoutout to NerdSEQ because Thomas is a monster developer who just gives his whole heart to this thing. He is still making better firmware, he is still answering questions in the discord and the forums. This is his baby and it shows every single day, what amazing work. It is an expensive hobby because of this, and I got most of my set up through some really lucky (for me) auctions and trades, but when I do buy new I love supporting these guys.

Good cast iron, and carbon steel cookware. A good carbon steel wok can last a lifetime. A good kitchen knife...doesn't have to be fancy, a good 8 inch chef knife from F Dick, Dexter Russell, Mercer (about $10-20). Anything from Tom Bihn. The bags are very thoughtfully designed, and tougher than chrome/timbuk2 bags. A really good screwdriver. Grace screwdrivers and Bahco are my favorites...with Vessel from Japan being a new fave. Vitamix. Robocoupe...refuses to die. FWIW, a Breville food processor died on me after only 2 uses of intermittent use.

Overall, I think stainless steel pots and pans are the best and most versatile. Zwilling (made in Germany) are very good. For skillets, I've found that you don't need SS, Carbon Steel and Cast iron but it's nice to have options. I've realized that the difference between high-end and mid-tier is negligible here. My reco: - Lodge for Cast iron (anything else is a waste of money). - Tramontina (mid/low-tier) and All-Clad (upper-tier) for SS. The difference between tramontina and D3 for clad pans is not noticeable. Copper core is a bit better, but not enough to make a big difference. Choose Tramontina or All Clad D3. Anything else is a waste of money. - As for carbon steel, I have only tested Ikea, DeBuyer, and Matfer. Among all, DeBuyer is the best (IMO). Together with Matfer these are my BIFL. Don't even bother to look at IKEA, they are flimsy and not worthy. I like the commercial series of Kitchen aid. The Stand mixer and Blender are perfect. I also own a Vitamix blender. All of them are BIFL. Do you have a specific utensil that you are looking for?

I buy cheap and if it breaks then I go for the bifl one. Harbor Freight tools, oxo kitchen tools. My first instant pot died on me so I got the eco pro or whatever and it’s lasted nearly a decade. My first rice cooker failed so I bought a Panasonic. However, on registry/wish list I put bifl stuff because I didn’t want people to feel bad when their gifts broke. KitchenAid mixers. Vitamix blender. Wüsthof knives. Stuff I learned about from this sub. Then a friend bought me my entire wish list. I’m set for life on many things, as is my daughter who will inherit.

funny. My goodwill brother B&W printer is one as well. And I recently got the vitamix kaboodle. I buy merrells. They last forever. I buy good power tools despite rarely using them so they'll last decades. I buy name brand led bulbs and they last eons. I can't think of anything else on the spot but seriously it pays sometimes to get good stuff. Especially if you can get it secondhand in good condition. I guess one example is my honda crv I got 5 years ago. Still drives like new and I only have tires coming up at 50k miles. And it will drive on for years.

Vitamix blender, Kitchenaid mixer (or attachments for it, if I already had one), Breville automatic tea maker. I've had my Breville for 10 years of daily use and it's still going strong. Good sheets and towels. Maybe not technically buy it for life, but they'll last a good few years to a decade if you take care of them. If either of you sew, a Reliable Velocity iron. I know Rowenta is the long time gold standard, but I've used professional gravity fed systems that weren't as powerful as the Reliable. It has been going for almost a decade with no hiccups, as well.

Favorite/must haves in your home
Linen sheets were a game changer for me. Cheaper ones are soft but won’t last too many years. I like them for the summer. Then thick Linoto linen sheets for the winter. For me All Clad stainless cookware is the best. I bought antique thick copper pots but they’re more high maintenance. Then cast iron. Doesn’t have to be fancy. Also as others have mentioned, a Vitamix blender is amazing. My other favorite gadget is an egg steamer. So fast and uses the smallest amount of water. Purely aesthetic, but best money I’ve spent on our house is adding windows and skylights. I appreciate the light and beauty every day!

I also have to support the vitamix blender. My blending journey was nutribullet, ninja bullet, magimix blender, now vitamix. All good, actually, but the vitamix doesn't have a weakness and is worth it. BUT, if you don't get a vitamix, you'd be fine too. The ninja bullet was actually my second favourite but it didn't handle hot/warm food as steam can't escape, and you can't add oil to emulsify as you can with a traditional open top blender.

Secondly, keep a flashlight next to your bed, in a place you can feel for it in the dark. Lastly, buy some extra smoke detectors. I have one by the clothes dryer, in the garage and in the attic. Those things will save your life.

A family member bought me a vitamix, probably about 15 years ago. I’ve still got it and it still blends like a champ. There’s not much it can’t handle and if you want your smoothies to be smooth it’s the only way to go. I tried to make a smoothie when staying at a friends house with their Ninja and it was a chunky mess.

A good condition used Vitamix blender. Bought for $350 on Marketplace. I've never had so much fruit or vegetables in my diet. I usually drink a smoothie every 1-2 days. My cravings for candy and sweets has gone down. Just feel better overall.

Their customer service is top notch. My dishwasher malfunctioned and somehow overheated it warped my Vitamix pitcher along with anything plastic in that load. I mentioned on a Vitamix Reddit that even though it’s dishwasher safe it’s possible to warp the carafe. Someone said contact Vitamix they have good customer service. I did and mentioned my dishwasher malfunctioning. They asked for pics of the carafe and serial numbers. Then sent me a new one (they retail over $100).

The robovac - you said quality or BIFL and it's the former. If you buy a good brand like Roborock, it will be many years before you need to replace it and that would probably be because you want an upgraded one since these things are still evolving in what they can do. Also, probably not a forever item but a Vitamix blender. Goddamn expensive but can handle anything you throw in there, day after day too if you are a daily user. I never really liked to make smoothies and blend anything until I tried one and now use it every day so I guess for me it was life changing. Don't know if it's a forever item yet but the Steelcase Leap that's been recommended here over the years so far has been good to me. It's a basic chair but very durable and comfortable. If you want to save some money, just go to a used office furniture store, they more than likely have a few, you'll save around 400-600 bucks.

1. Kindle, or any ebook reader. I bought mine since 2020 and it is still perfect. Save me lots of money on buying book. 2. A good thermometer bottle (Im using locknlock because it is the best one in my country), and a Vietnamese coffee filter ($1-$2) that can be used for a life time: I made my own latte, store it in the thermo bottle and it is tastier, cheaper, and healthier. Saved me lots of latte run 3. Weights and resistance bands: I'm working out at home with instruction from Fitness Blender page (many free videos) for strength training and pilates, and running/dance cardio for cardio. I just dont like going to the gym, and spreeing money on gym memberships. 4. And Im going to buy a Vitamix blender. Heard it is a BIFL and Im excited for it

So many of my BIFL recommendations are kitchen gadgets. So skipping the obvious: Lodge Cast Iron Skillet! Zojirushi Rice Cooker (a made in Japan model) Vitamix Blender (skip all the fancy sensors and electronics, the 5200 series is great) Kitchen-Aid Stand Mixer (if you are a Sam's Club member, they nearly always have the "bowl-lift" model on sale for $300) Cladded Stainless Steel Cookware - (Hestan, All-Clad, Heritage Steel, etc.) This is splurge purchase, but you're a big espresso nerd, a European made espresso machine, thinking companies like Rancilio, Profitec, ECM. Thermo-Works instant read thermometer (Thermapen One) I use all of these at a minimum weekly, but as often as daily, or multiple times a day (espresso), and they've all lasted me and my wife years and some are pushing decades now.

Instead of spending $100-150 every 1-2 years, save your money and buy a blender that will last 5-10+ years. Both Blendtec and Vitamix are top-tier. I have 2 Vitamix blenders, one is Maxi-4000 that's over 25 years old. The other is a refurbed 6500 that's about 10 years old. Both work like the day I bought them. Vitamix warranty/customer service is also outstanding. They stand behind their product and I have nothing but good things to say about their warranty service.

I’ve owned the same vitamix for 17 yrs. Still works. What sets it apart besides that it’s powerful is the life time warranty. Over the 17 yrs. I did have one container crack. That wasn’t covered and expensive to replace.

The Cuisinart Custom 14 is highly rated and I bought a new one last Christmas for a family member for under $150 on sale and using multiple online coupons from Kohls. I have the Cuisinart Core Custom 13 cup that I bought for under $150 at Costco last fall. It came with a small accessory bowl that would be a good size for small amounts of baby food. I think either processor would be a good choice based on many reviews and my limited experience. Maybe sales will pick back up around Mother’s Day? As for BIFL, my grandmother had one of the previous versions of a Custom 14 and it lasted decades and has been passed on to another family member. It won’t process meat in a way that I think would be wanted, but if you wanted a great puree for your baby and to make soups with garden produce, the Vitamix 5200 is excellent. Expensive, but you can save money on a purchase from Vitamix by signing up for their newsletter and can receive sale notifications. There are probably many ways/places to buy and save money, but I’ve only seen a few major sales listed. I’ve had mine for over a decade and am very happy with it.

I’ve always been a Makita guy without knowing anything about the corporate side. My tools always just felt more solid and durable than coworkers’ Dewalt or Milwaukee. Then I saw this in r/construction.
And motor cooling. Huge one for longevity. That's the big thing behind Vitamix, too. They have beefy motors, but also have an automatic thermal shutoff. Typical cheap blenders do not, and you can easily burn out the motors because of that.

Unpopular Opinion: “Researching Before Buying” as an Excuse for Overthinking
One way to get around this is to just find stuff. In the trash, cheap at garage sales, whatever. This engages a ton of serendipity. You learn stuff, can try stuff out, get rid o the things you don't like. It tends to get you out of your info silo. Mostly I do have high quality items in my life, but am always on the lookout for random stuff to try. Sometimes it is really lucky, like I recently found a nice vitamix in the trash that was nicer and quieter than the one we had so I kept it. The old one is passed on to a relative. A while I found a Moccamaster and it was something of a miracle that it was complete. Having tested it a couple of times I decided it is not for me so I sold it to a happy person from craigslist. "Researching before buy" is really Consumer Reports way of allowing you to justify consumption that might not need to happen.

You can use a vitamix for so many things because of how powerful it is! It will literally cook soup. The blades move so fast that it generates enough friction in viscous liquids to almost boil. I cook butternut squash soup in my vitamix. 5 minutes on turbo speed and the soup is piping hot and extremely smooth. Of course it will also do smoothies, turn nuts into flour, make powdered sugar, whip cream, press the oil out of avocados and olives, make nut butters, make plant milks, baby food, dough and batter, sauces, pesto, the best smoothest hummus ever, emulsify salad dressings, pudding, pureeing, I mean the thing is an absolute beast. It’s so powerful and robust that the base/motor is not the failure point - the blender jar is the replaceable part cause it takes a beating over time. Look up some recipes and use that thing. I’ve been thinking about upgrading and getting one of there ultra powerful units so I can unlock more potential in the kitchen

Immersion Blender: Ninja Vs Vitamix
Sounds like a smoothie cup blender that always sits out on your counter plus an immersion blender would work for 99% of your needs (I would truly forget about the nut butters). I make mayo and emulsified sauces by hand whisking, but if I needed a blender I would use smoothie cup because the volume needed to do it in the immersion blender would be too much. The way the smoothie blender is inverted and so the ingredients sit directly on the blade and yet they are so small and easy to wash is awesome. Any immersion blender will work for sauces and soups. But the Vitamix has a lot features that ease the annoyances I’ve had in previous models (multiple speeds means less splashing, power motor means fast work, silicone head means no scratching on pots. Also easy to clean and cord is. Good length.)

I got the Vitamix immersion blender just this last Black Friday to replace a hand-me-down Braun that’s older than me, 33, which finally died. The Vitamix smokes even the *BRAUN* in terms of raw performance. I have to catch myself sometimes because I’ll over-blend a soup that I still want to have some texture. It’s so powerful and so quiet that it almost seems like it’s not working until you go to check the texture and it’s total baby food.

Immersion Blender: Ninja Vs Vitamix
Love my Vitamix immersion (bought from Costco 3 years ago). I’ve had Bamix in Australia and the Vitamix is better. I also have an Ank! The Vitamix is powerful, easy to clean, and the five speeds and head design help prevent splattering. The silicone head means it can be used in non-stick pots without scratching. However, I use it exclusively for soups and sauces that I’m blending in a pot (usually hot). Your use case speaks to a proper blender system far more than an immersion blender. We have the Ninja blender that comes with smoothie cups, and a blender jug can also do some food processor jobs like shredding. We have used the smoothie cups near daily, and the big blender/shredder weekly or so for both 3 years, all going very well. I bought extra smoothie cups and blender heads because I make curry pastes and ginger/garlic pastes. So the savoury cups/heads are kept separate and don’t make my morning smoothies taste like shrimp paste lol. I personally wouldn’t bother trying nut butters in anything less than a real Vitamix/Blendtex blender. Definitely the smoothies that come out of real Vitamix are are way smoother than our ninja smoothie cups but we’re happy.

Rtings is good for TVs and monitors but I wouldn't put any faith in their view of cooking equipment. Including ice crushing in the test of immersion blenders is like scoring TVs based on their usefulness as a table, and giving anything from Ninja an 8/10 score for "professional use" is a pretty clear indication the testers don't know what they're talking about. Between your two options I'd go with Vitamix but realistically your best option for a BIFL immersion blender are: 1) whatever brand is stocked at your local restaurant supply shop, probably Robot Coupe, Waring or Dynamix 2) Bamix

There is literally no comparison. It’s also repairable which cannot be said for the ninja (or anything owned by shark). When the ninja breaks it goes in the trash - the Vitamix can be sent in for repair.

Blendtec or Vitamix is the only answer. After having the opportunity to use each of these multiple times (I'm a nanny and have worked in many homies, cooking for the children, including lots of smoothies and other blender uses), I've been spoiled. Using any other type of blender feels like a miserable chore. Ninja blenders are my least favorite of all. They're towel garbage. I've used two different models many times each and I absolutely hate them. The tower of blades does a terrible job of blending things because it can't create a typical blender vortex It's also a huge pain to clean. I could go on, but in short Ninjas are over engineered crap. I personally own a Blendtec. I love how the "blades" are completely dull. They're not designed to cut things they're designed to demolish things with brute force. As a bonus, they're super easy and safe to clean. It destroys ice for blended drinks, and generally just kicks ass. Vitamix is great too, and the standard carafe is a narrower shape than blendtec which is preferable for small amounts. I've used several other "high end" and cheap blenders over the years and none have ever stood out against the trash of Ninja or the excellence of Blendtec and Vitamix. They all just fade into the mushy middle of "not great, but at least it's not a Ninja."

Family has had a Vitamix 7500 for 11 years.It's the most used appliance in the house. We use it at least 300 days each year, mostly for morning smoothies with ice, plus soups and dressings. We had to replace the lid last month because we washed it in the dishwasher just like you're told not to do, and the plastic got brittle and chipped off, exactly as they say will happen if you don't hand wash it only. Easy to replace it, and both the lid and container are easy to clean. The motor still runs like a champ, effortlessly churning up anything tossed in. No brainer. Get a Vitamix. Insane quality and performance.

The personal cups are great, the blender is perfect. The customer service is top notch. Here is the one issue. They redesign it every decade or so, but they never go bad, so you can't get the new features.

It requires several servings of material in the pitcher to get the blades working. Maybe I'd have better luck with a 32oz instead of the 64oz, haven't tried. They're expensive to buy separately.

Purchased this refurbished omega juicer about 8 years ago. Hundreds of pounds of of produce juiced without any issues.
Omega cold presses the juice at slow speed. This keeps the enzymes within the juice still active increasing nutrient value. High speed juicers create heat with the speed/friction. I have the same model. Great machine. Ranks up there with a Vitamix blender or Kitchen Aid mixer.

With any blender you need to get it really clean, dish soap and hot water, run the blender until the jar is totally wet, soapy and free of any visible bits, then repeat with more hot water to rinse and then let it dry. Vitamix are great and come completely apart.

I’ve had both and recommend the 5200. I used the 5200 almost daily to make smoothies for 9 years until it broke. The e520 was on sale and I liked the shorter profile so I purchased that one as a replacement. I’ve been using it daily for 3 years now and although it is a bit quieter and easier to clean, it does not do as good of a job at blending.

I debated between these 2 blenders a while back and went with the 5200. I did a ton of research and watched/read hundreds of reviews. It really boiled down to the versatility of the 5200 vs the smaller one. A slimmer and taller blender makes more sense and can blend small amounts (because it’s narrower) and larger amounts (because it’s taller) which has come in handy countless times in my home kitchen. And since this is a BIFL post I have to throw in there that this thing is a beast. Going strong after 6-7 years of use almost every day.

In CA in my first ever house, I had a 1930's gas stove, white and chrome, it didn't need electricity so if power went out you could still use it. I loved it. Now my oldest appliance is my 20 year old VitaMix. Blends so smooth I made our kid's baby food in it. Good buy, worth the price tag.

Is a Vitamix actually worth it?
My mother hipped me to the Vitamix nearly 37 years ago. She has passed, but her Vitamix lives on and is still going strong. We gave it to my niece. She was way ahead of her time. She purchased it because when I took my on off of formula and started giving him milk, his body rejected it. We discovered he was allergic to dairy so used the Vitamix to make almond milk for him. She bought me one for my birthday over 22 years ago and I still have it. My husband researches everything he buys, sometime for months, until he's satisfied he's buying what's best for his needs. He was researching juicers and I told him that we already have the best juicer available in the Vitamix, but asked him to let me know what he comes with. Weeks later, he told me he figured it out. When I asked which one was the best, he replied, "Vitamix". LOL! He makes green smoothies. You can put orange peels and seeds in it and it will blend it all together as smooth as you'd like it to be. really like my Vitamix and I will say, they have come down in price quite a bit and Costco sells them. Ours were in the upper $600s, now you have flexibility in the model you buy and have options to spend less. I'm contemplating buying a new one, just because they look better and the pitchers are wider now instead of taller. It's worth it.

Vitamix. Robocoupe. Bosch (kitchen appliances). Lee Valley/Veritas. Lie Nielson. Herder chef knives. Mac knives. G and L guitars. Taylor guitars (I'm not a fan of their style/tone, but their QC is best in the acoustic factory guitar scene. PRS guitars (some of the best factory electric guitar QC). Toyota/Lexus. They just work. I have a Honda, which is pretty reliable...but they chitzied on plastic floorpan clips instead of metal. Bottom of my car started going "whoosh" after 54000 miles. Never had an issue on my 1997 Corolla. Spyderco. Victorinox. Leatherman. solid warranty, and decent QC, even with all the Chinese clones. Mitotuyo micrometers. Built different. Tom Bihn bags. Waterfield designs. IMHO significantly better and tougher than Chrome (wore a hole through a corner in 1 month) and Timbuck2. Excellent ergos. Excellent workmanship and materials. Patagonia.

We bought our Vitamix about 14 years ago. We do hardcore green smoothies with it which are really challenging for blenders. The carafe went bad about 8 years in and they sent us a new one. Whenever this thing finally dies I will happily pay for another one. So simple, so reliable, so powerful.

Nikon D7000. Only because that's the only thing i have owned for long. Now my mentality is bug once cry once. Bought a Vitamix ascent 3500. Planning to buy a Bosch 800 dishwasher and a long lasting Couch (not sure of the brand yet). We'll see.

Buy Once Cry Once items?
having had both, vitamix is still the better blender. They are both great, but if you're looking for the best, vitamix is more versatile/handles heavy blending better. The blentec powers through stuff more easily because of jar design (no tamper needed), but it's really tough to blend something on "low" in a blendtec for the same reason. Really uneven blending for things like salsa or nut butter or whatever.

Me too, an ex got me a commercial Vitamix 5200 that was used by Jamba Juice (and refurbished before she gave it to me). The thing is a tank. Hasn't let me down since I got it in....2013.

Buy Once Cry Once items?
I got a Waring Commercial blender, as in it’s made for restaurant use and I bought it from a commercial kitchen supplier. It is a very good competitor to Vitamix. About the same price but rated at 3.5 horsepower vs. Vitamix at 2.2 horsepower. Now companies pull all kinds of shenanigans with advertised specs, so I don’t take that at face value. But I’ll put it this way, Vitamix comes with that plunger thing built into the lid so you can help jam stuff towards the blades. The Waring doesn’t have that and in 10 years I’ve never needed it. The blades crest enough suction and circulation that anything in there gets pulled down on its own. Also when I’m brave enough (and have hearing protection) to use the pulse button, it turns a pitcher of ice into fluffy snow in 2 seconds flat. Didn’t mean to rant, just saying that while Vitamix is very good, they are not on an island on their own except when it comes to marketing.

If you had nothing what would you BIFL first?
A Vitamix will save you money in the long run over a cheap blender. Soups, smoothies, drinks, etc. Buy quality and you’ll only need to cry once.

What did you buy not realizing you bought it for life?
Vitamix. I've bought blenders before were three to four time use items. I'm not sure what I was thinking when I bought the vitamix, but wow, amazing. I had it warrantied for service about 4 years later, no cost to me, still works. I can put anything in there. It even had the ducting to heat it while it blends so I can make soup and eat it right out of the blender.

Zojirushi appreciation post
I've had one nearly 10 years now and even the non stick is absolutely perfect. Its easy to give a proper clean. Probably the best appliance Ive ever owned. I remember when I bought it family and even the mrs, " why spend that much on a rice cooker". Its probably the cheapest appliance when you factor in cost per year and per use. Vitamix is a close second. I went through a blender probably every year or two before finally getting a vitamix which has also now lasted 10 years and works out miles cheaper than keep buying a worse, cheaper model every year or so.

What are some BIFL Wedding Gifts?
These are really expensive but Breville toaster oven, zojirushi rice cooker, vitamix blender and immersion blender, le cruset Dutch oven, 3D printer, kitchenaid stand mixer and accessories, Brother printer, all Clad pots. A lot of these companies have refurbished options you can ask for. I think any of these items would be great secondhand.

Not all appliances but kitchen related: A nice Dutch oven (I like Staub). Kitchenaid mixer. Vitamix blender. Zojirushi rice cooker. Crockpot. Instapot. Tramontina tri-ply stainless steel pans. Shun chef knife. A good air fryer if that’s your thing. Staub casserole dish set. These all get heavy use in my kitchen and I plan/hope to have them forever or at least a very long time.

What one thing would I should buy for my sister under $500 or less?
Vitamix blender. KitchenAid mixer. Nice set of cast iron: skillets, bread pan, Dutch oven. If you buy enameled cast iron, look for Staub over Le creuset, the enamel coating lasts longer.

8 year old magic bullet
Had a roommate that had a Magic Bullet; didn't last more than a couple months. Our VitaMix has lasted over 20 years without the need for parts replacement, even repaired an employer's VitaMix before in a commercial kitchen. VitaMix is like the KitchenAid Mixer of blenders. Parts can be replaced and many of the attachments can be used between the model updates.

Just make sure you buy an OEM vitamix container and blade unit when you need to replace it. I had to replace mine last year on my 2012 Vitamix from Costco. I bought an aftermarket one from Amazon last year and the blade unit is leaking badly. The seller supposedly offered a lifetime warranty, but I guess they meant their lifetime because they seem to have disappeared.
