A few brands I'll probably stick with for life
We have had 3 vehicles in my life (first one bought in 2008 when we were 22) and we are still driving our original 2008 VW, and now a 2015 Honda minivan. I’m trying to get the car to 20 years, but it’s at the point where it would be hard to justify a fix that cost more than ~$2,000. We have never had anything too major come up with the car and most of the issues have been routine maintenance. We have probably put a few thousand in genuine repairs over its lifespan. Up until this year we have had extremely minimal issues with any of our vehicles vehicles… but 2025 was the year that our transmission and alternator went on our Honda a few months apart, and we also needed to replace a bunch of hoses etc because things had gotten rusty/brittle. All total we paid about $4,000 to get it back on the road (in addition to needing to replace tires), but considering it’s been paid off for years, that’s a small price to pay for a reliable vehicle.

My VW was incredibly reliable for 10 years. So I just upgraded to an Audi 😬

What is the equivalent of "Apple removed 3.5mm jack" of your favorite products ?
Actual buttons vs Touch controls in cars. I was set to get a new Golf R or GTI in 2022. Test drove the GTI and hated the lack of physical buttons.... Bought a lightly used 2019 instead... Very happy with it. It's got real buttons.

I wish vehicles were still BIFL…
Ehhh Ford and GM had a lot of issues with quality control then, and It was kind of a dice roll whether you get one that would fall apart within 50,000 miles or one that lasts forever with little in-between. The parts could be rock solid, but if, say, the machinist who was doing the tooling work was sloppy at work.... maybe the heads from that week all fail prematurely. The real BIFL car was the Volkswagen type 1 and type 2. The bug and the bus frequently hit over 1 million miles with an air cooled engine. The bug was manufactured up until 2003, you can still get ones in great condition and parts are comparatively cheap and widely available. Source 20+ years as a mechanic. Still work in the industry.

What’s one thing you bought once and it’s still going strong years later?
My 2008 VW Jetta. Got it new in '08. Its got the 2.5L engine and 5-speed manual. This thing is near bulletproof. Total mechanical repairs are below $7k and include: a new clutch, head gasket job, 2 vacuum pump seals, 2 sets of belts, transmission torque mount, an ignition key cylinder a door lock cylinder, and one window motor. I don't have the total but operating costs, including fuel, maintenance and repairs, and insurance, etc. is about 14 cents/mile. And it's got 289k on it - so about $47k total ownership on top of purchase price. This baby is worn as fuck but it's bit gonna die any time soon. Pain peels and the interior cloth needs replacing, but that's all cosmetic. I luv my V-dub

What did you wish you had at 21?
You’re joking, but I seriously wish I had bought a 90s sports car back then, I still remember stuff like a AE86 being sold for well under 10k, now that’s a long goner. All the fun stuff that I was like, “ehhh, 3-4k for this piece of crap”, now I could double or triple my initial investment. Missed out on getting low mileage TDI Golfs, a Peugeot 106 GTI, single owner Smart Roadsters, oh well…

Chevy Volt is a rare gem from GM. MK4 VWs with the 1.9TDI will outlive the earth, especially with the stick Mazda 3s seem to go for a long long time. Skip this one if cars rust in your area though. Hybrid Ford Fusions

Closest to BIFL car I can purchase in Europe?
Toyota Yaris, Preferably with the 1.6 NA engine. VW Passat 3C, with the 2.0 Commonrail Diesel. (Regularly get over 350k on the clock.) VW with the old 1.9L Diesel, almost indestructible.

What's your most comfortable and durable piece of clothing?
I have this VW zip up hoodie that I've had since 2018 and I wear it everyday, cold, hot, rain or shine, it's my go to hoodie and only time I'm not wearing it is when it's in the laundry.
