Cashmere and merino from J.Crew and Banana Republic cause irritation. Should I try higher-end brands or look for alternatives?
If you are looking for athletic grade merino, try Trew Gear, Voormi, or Minus 33. Trew and Minus 33 are butter soft. Voormi is not as soft, but there is no itch.

Recommendations for a BIFL insulated jacket
Okay first of all... not crazy! That sounds incredible and you're gonna have such a good time up there. So Juneau is gonna throw everything at you. Rain, wind, cold, more rain. Southeast Alaska is basically a temperate rainforest, which means staying dry and warm is the whole game. But honestly your approach is already perfect – you're thinking long-term quality over trendy stuff, which is exactly how you should be gearing up. For an insulated jacket, check ou**t Voormi.** I know, you've probably never heard of them, but they're legit. They make technical gear out of wool instead of all that plastic synthetic stuff, and it's a total game-changer for wet climates. Wool still insulates when it's damp (huge in Juneau), breathes way better when you're sweating on a hike, and doesn't get gross and smelly like polyester. Their jackets are seriously built to last forever. Look at their Core Construction Hoody or the Drift or San Juan Jacket, packable, tough as hell, and made for exactly the kind of weather you're about to deal with. Yeah it's pricey, but this is your "buy it once and wear it for the next decade" moment. They'll also repair it if something happens. You're gonna crush it up there. Juneau's amazing.

Which is the best outdoor brand - Marmot, The North Face, Patagonia, L.L. Bean, Kuhl, Eddie Bauer, or arc'teryx?
Check out this Instagram account called - AtSource - they talk about where all these items come from. You'll see these are all fast fashion brands. Maybe check out some smaller outdoor brands like VOORMI, better quality, better customer service and they stand by their products.

What are other durable and affordable outdoor brands like Patagonia and Fjallraven? How do I find these durable products for affordable prices?
Yeah, affordable and not fast fashion is hard to find. Maybe check out a brand called VOORMI. Very durable gear in my opinion and in my experience.

Favourite ethical and good quality outdoor brands?
I'd add VOORMI to that list. Less fast fashion, more durability and quality
