  Box fan equivalent request

  Totally relate the box fan noise is hard to replace and cheap once burn out fast. I switched to a vornado or lasko floor fan for daily use. Same air flow and sleep noise but much more durable.

  Are there any true "self-cleaning" evaporative humidifiers out there?

  Biology always wins, no matter what the box claims. UV lights inside a humidifier tank barely hit anything once the water gets cloudy or a biofilm forms. Chlorine cartridges run out fast, microbes do not. The only reliable approach is picking a design that is hard to contaminate in the first place. A sealed evaporative wick chamber with no internal splash zones helps more than any gadget. A tank and base you can toss in a dishwasher lets you cook off the slime instead of scrubbing forever. A decent wick material slows things down, but it is still not magic. A simple water path with no hidden channels keeps mold from setting up shop. The Vornado Evap40 and the Honeywell HCM 350 fit that pattern, mostly because they rely on plain evaporation instead of pretending to be sterilizers. Any self cleaning UV badge is marketing. Those LEDs barely light the water, much less sanitize it. Simple geometry and heat tolerant parts outlive every gimmick humidifier.

  Vornado fans are amazing. When my father passed a few years ago in central Kansas I made sure to nab his two Vornado fans before my brothers did because they’re the best. FYI, the fans are (maybe were) built in Andover, Kansas.

  Ive been using a modern standing vornado every night for the last 8 years and it’s still working like the day I bought it. Though I do wish they made full disassembly easier for deep cleaning.

  Nice find! I’ve got the modern reproduction of this fan and it’s fantastic. I don’t know if it’ll hold up as well as this one, but vornado still makes a quality fan.

  What’s a purchase that’s not fun, not flashy but now you swear by it?

  A few things that really come to mind with no particular order or genre: - Tires and windshield wipers are two consumables that really are worth what you pay for them. - Quality hand tools will always make life easier. (Fluke testers for everything and Leathermans get honorable mentions here.) - Good appliances that you don’t have to worry about will give you peace of mind. Invest in your fridge if you have to pick just one. - Vornado fans are a favorite. - Single-function drip coffee with a gold tone coffee filter. - Running ethernet through your house to every room saves headache, and will always outlive whatever wireless/mesh system you’re currently using. - Wrought-iron outdoor furniture. - Anything that involves entry/exit to your house. Screen door mechanisms, handles/knobs/locks, garage door openers and remotes, gates. - A set of jumper cables, ratchet straps, and an *organized* toolkit for the car. - Hardware hardware hardware. Keep track/stock of nails/screws/turnbuckles/toggle-bolts/etc., and always restock when you notice you’re low. It’s hard to source carpentry materials at 2 AM. Make sure you have it for indoor and outdoor ratings. A small stack of tarps is a must in this category, too. - Grocery-getter shoes. Something you can throw on in an instant, but can take you through a full day. I lean towards Birkenstocks. - Osprey bags/luggage. The guarantee is worth its weight in gold.

  Vornado 133DC $45 Speed knob feels continuous, but likely under the knob has 8 or so values, without any click/detente between. Power consumption ranges from 1VA (lowest 2 to 3 speeds) to 18VA (highest speed). Power factor (PF) across that range is non-linear and varies from 0.24 - 0.90.

  The vornado? Probably 7-8 years or so. If you stay on top of keep the dust off the motor area every few years it probably would have gone longer. It had a great focused stream of air and I loved it.

  Vornado products generally have a 5 year warranty, and if you're at all handy getting inside a Vornado to clean the blades and oil the motor should be relatively easy which will give you a fan that will last for life, even if the new ones are not as well-made as they once were. Dreo's 1 year warranty and high-tech controls make me think it won't last nearly as well or be remotely as easy to repair, but I haven't owned one yet so I can't say for certain.

Had you done so, you'd see the #1 through 87th recommendation is Vornado. Now go to their website and pick out the form factor and CFM rating that appeals to you.

  Better Bedroom Fan???

  Love Vornado fans and their customer service is top notch! Recommend all the time. Not cheap but quality, made in the US (not all but a lot) and I find a lot of their designs aesthetically pleasing unlike other brands that don’t seem to care about form only function. Vornado gets both right.

  What modern manufacturers still make long lasting BIFL-worthy items?

  Vornado. I can’t speak to some of their newest non-circulator product lines, but their traditional circulators (call them fans if you must, though they are more effective than regular fans) and their vintage line are made to a high standard. Vornado even has a dedicated Made in the USA line that’s top notch. I have yet to have one fail, whether new or antique. I’ll say that I adore their current vintage line. They look like the classic Vornados of yesteryear, with beautiful enameled metal and updated safety features.  Vornado’s technology has been established as being effective for many decades, and they continue to stick with what works as their core. They’re the first portable fan (ahem, circulator!) that I’ll recommend, every time. To me, they epitomize BIFL.

  Best fan to cool a BR

  We keep a little (12" +/-) Vornado on the floor in the bedroom, near the doorway to the hall. (Bedroom on 2nd floor; a/c has a hard time getting the cool air up here.) When it gets really hot, we also have another little Vornado at the top of the stairs. This seems to work magically. I don't know why yours would be so loud, but I wonder if putting on the floor and on a softer surface e.g. rug would help. The Vornado brochure when we bought it (decades ago) said to put it on the floor so it's pulling the coolest air in the room and putting it into circulation. We also have a Geek Air 12" battery operated fan on the floor of the living room, plugged in. We originally bought this to use on the patio to keep mosquitoes away from our ankles but when it's not outside we use it in L/R. It is amazingly quiet. We started using it because our dog loves to lie in front of it after her walks, but it makes the room more comfortable for us, too.

  Yeah unfortunately you're out of options. AC is the only thing that actually gets rid of heat(cools), everything else might make you "feel" cooler temporarily but in actually will add more heat to the living space. If that's your only option then what you need is the best performance/efficiency. Which is.... Vornado. DC/energy smart air circulator. Made in USA, 10 year warranty. The 723DC Is the most powerful one they make to my knowledge in the smallest formfactor and cheapest price.

  Not all Vornado fans are created equal, in my experience. Maybe their tiny ones are less robust. The Pivot Clip died after 2 years. I kept dust out of it as best I could as you could not take it apart. Eventually started screeching and stopped. It was amazing though. So powerful and quiet. Just not a lifetime purchase at $80/2 years?

  A fan that makes great white noise

  As someone who has slept with a fan next to my head since I can remember, no one can answer this for you unfortunately. The pitch of the noise will be different for everyone and movement of air will be personal preference. When my last fan died (12" Hawaiian breeze lasted damn near a decade), I researched for weeks and weeks, buying and trying/returning dozens of fans to find that right noise. I am currently a few years into using a 12" comfort zone fan on my night stand. I have five fans in the cut in case this one goes out and I start the process again. For example, I kept a vornado air circulating fan as backup, but it just didn't sound right to me. In my 36 years, I've gone through about 4 staple fans. In my experience, I can tell you that any standard 12" desk fan or something like a Honeywell turbo will probably get you a good five years minimum. I have never tried a Dyson, but you can sometimes see them on display at a best buy to get an idea of you would like to spend that money. A standard box fan also gives a very deep and strong white noise. I can go on for hours about this shit.

  I'm looking for a humidifier for my small bedroom. I'm willing to pay more for ease of use and best quality.

  Evaporative humidifiers are the only choice unless you're going to actually use distilled water. You do need to replace the wick as it gets filled with minerals and stuff grows on it, but easier than dealing with airborne mineral dust or baked on minerals. Use a humidifier treatment solution and the wicks last significantly longer. I currently use a combo of a vornado and best air golden solution.

  Vintage 12” Zero/Mcgraw Elec box fan

  Dreo Space Heater Vs Delonghi

  It's been a year. Got a Vornado space heater for heating up just me. Bought a Delognhi Dragon for heating my apartment. Works great. I bought on with dials that I feel will last longer, but I have to fiddle with it more than an electronic one.
